My daughter will not drink anything other than milk: Advice?

My daughter is 7months old and will not drink anything other than her milk(formula). I tried plain water, sugar water, diluted juice and pedialyte(all sorts of flavors) and still refuses. She will take a sip and then look at me funny and just chew on the nipple. My pediatrician advised me to start incorporating a drink other than milk into her feeding time.Any advice to get her to start drinking something besides milk?

Formula is the number one until babies are 1! Don’t push something else when they’re ready they’re ready

My daughter is 2.5 and JUST now started to enjoy juice. Everything will happen when they are ready. Continue to offer it, but never force it.

Another one who says she isn’t ready. Dont push anything on her. I was always told that babies dont need anything more than formula or breast milk.

mine wouldn’t drink anything put formula/ milk out of bottle. Juice and water he drinks like crazy out of a sippy cup, won’t touch out of a bottle though.

Babies are only supposed to drink formula or breast milk til a year old…

I’d let her have her formula, try again when shes around a year old.
She can have some juices if she decides she likes any of those.

My son (9mths) enjoys cold water in his sippy cup. We just kept trying little sips here and there. Didnt push it tho. Now he really likes his water.

We now give bottles before any type of sleep. Half formula half milk. And water in between.

Have you tried coconut water?

That’s okay. My younger two only liked that and water and still only do at 4 and 16 months. My 8 year old drank juice with his baby food from 4 months on. Every kid is different nothing to stress about

My pediatrician recommended the same thing . . He suggested to mix with the formula at first. . Do formula then ad an 1-2 or of juice, pedialyte whatever you choose. And slowly take it up .

She’s only 7 months. All she needs is formula/breast milk and water. And water should be limited still. Definitely does Not need sugar water or juice.

Shes only 7 months she doesn’t really need anything else at this age.

U shouldn’t start worrying about drinks other than milk until closer to a year

Only reason it should be a concern is if she’s drinking to much formula

My daughter would go through a can every day and a half but she has a eating problem even now at 6

Try fruits and veggies instead of drinks

Why did your Pediatriction suggest that? Mine said formula only until my daughters a year old aside from solids…

Just try putting it in a sippy cup. Milk in bottle. Just keep it offering it her during the days. Sip here and there. She adjust as gets older

That’s really weird that your doctor would advise that. Babies don’t need anything other than formula/breastmilk to drink. Maybe occasional water after 6 months.

Ummmm…not sure y the dr is advising she drink anything else other than formula or breastmilk until 1? I could see if she was ill and needed pedialite for hydration…

Most pediatricians don’t want kids to have others liquids they say the formula has everything in itup to one year of age

Just let her have formula and try with plain water. No juice or sugar water. She doesn’t need anything else

Just keep trying on the juice water maybe try a sippy cup

My 2yr old refused anything besides formula before 1 too. Dr was not concerned.

Put drink in a sippy and just let her do her thing eventually she will get the hang of it. Maybe she associates bottle with milk thats why she looks confused.I dont know why all the judgement on sugar water when juice has sugar too. If doctor gave the go ahead for something in addition to milk theres a reason. She asked for help not judgement. Hopefully some of the actual suggestions help some

Juice is never necessary and is really just sugar.

Formula is all baby needs right now, keep trying water in a soft spout sippy cup. She will catch on eventually.

OP are you sure you’re pediatrician didn’t mean to start giving her water? I’ve never heard of a doctor asking you to give your baby juice at 7 months! Way too much sugar and will start bad habits!

Mine did the same. Its just something new is why she kinda chews on the nipple. But i agree i would put in a sippy cup and keep formula in the bottle. And i would stick to water. Formulas up to a year. Just my opinion

My kid was like that too. And then she decided to take my water bottles and drink out of them. So she gets water and milk through out the day. 7 months is too early to introduce things other than formula. We didn’t start introducing new liquids until 11 months

keep formula going till a little over a yr maybe even a yr.

Put it in a sippy cup. Formula/milk only in a bottle. Try half juice half water.

Nothing with sugar. Could try water with natural fruit juices in it. Like you can get a lot of water/juice out of a watermelon. Also 7 months old you should also be able to start adding a little rice cereal to the formula.

Every second comment is telling this lady her baby doesn’t need anything but formula, but yet it clearly states her pediatrician advised her to start giving her baby other things to drink :woman_facepalming:t2::woman_facepalming:t2::woman_facepalming:t2:

Only formula or breastmilk for the first year. Your pediatrician is a quack.

Ive never heard of any doctor telling a parent to gibe their 7 month old baby anytbing but their breast milk/formula. Thats strange. Theres water in the formula. Juice has way too much sugar, even when u dilute it with water. I wouldnt do it. Wait until baby is at least 11 months. I would get a second opiniin from a different pediatrician. Thats weird to me.

You need a new pediatrician

Have you tried a sippy cup with a nipple? I’ve used those with my 1 year old starting at 6 mos to get used to a cup. My other two loved their cups right away. My 3rd will drink anything now from a cup that’s not too cold but only formula from her bottle. She’s also my only one who’s used a bottle past a year. I had my other two off by 9 mos. they are all different. Just keep trying to give her a little water here and there. She will get it.

I never heard of this before and my son is 7 month old he only drink milk told me give him juice at age of one same as cow milk.

Her baby could be slightly overweight, stop trying to act like doctors people.

Water is a good alternative but I would try watered down milk to start. Slowly adding more water everyday.

I did extremely watered down gerber juice on the baby food isle. I went through i dont know how many different ones until she liked pear juice. I started it in a bottle and then went to a sippy. She’s 3 and i still water her juice down.

That’s because all she is supposed to drink is formula. :+1:t2:

You need a new doctor. Sounds like an idiot. The rest of the whole world says only formula or breastmilk until a year old.

That’s a weird recommendation and sounds like you need a new pediatrician. A 7 mo old doesn’t need anything other than milk :slightly_smiling_face:

You’re doctors a IDIOT!!! Never give a child under 1 cows milk, never give sugar drinks of any kind!!! Formula or breast milk till 1

Our family gives half water half decaffeinated , sugar free ice tea in a sippy cup with meals at that age.

Also watered down unsweetened apple juice. Just at meal time.

7 months should be eating baby food right?
Little formal, more healthy baby food and water during meals.

T ry a tippy cup-shes old enough

Keep trying they say it takes trying 10 times before a baby accepts something new. Some accept immediately

Sometimes just offering it and leaving it in reach is all you can do. :woman_shrugging:

I don’t understand why your pedi would suggest this… babies under 1 should only have formula/breastmilk to drink. 2 oz of water max/d (over 6 months) if they’re out in the heat.

Maybe try watering down milk to get her used to water?

Maybe try using a water infuser adding your own ingredients of fruit to what she might like to drink, its not to sweet and super healthy and try and introduce her to a sippy cup with a straw. Every child is different and every parent will have their own opinions on this, go with your gut instincts and try whatever you like

May sound strange but are u doing kettle water / tap or bottled water?? My son would only start drinking juice once I used tap water before wouldn’t touch it x

Give her a little more time. Adding other drinks arent necessarily important right niw. As long as she is getting all the nutrients she needs, she’ll get curious soon enough

to all the people saying nothing but milk for the frist year . what do you just stop at a year and start with other stuff?

Your baby should’ve just started eating baby food so now he should be having less formula and more food. Maybe a little water but no juices .

I do home child care. From 6 months to a year, I just offer water in a sippy cup at meal times. I have my water cup and I say “mmmm… Sip?” and then offer their cup. They’ll eventually mimic (after lots of playing with it) and over time they’ll understand what “sip” means and I’ll just say “sip?” and they’ll do it. After a while of that, it’s there and they sip. They get plenty of water from their formula and their baby food in the beginning. It’s just training them to sip. Different kids like different cups, but I use the “Take and Toss” ones. They’re simple to use and keep clean. Little ones really only need water as they get older and start drinking. The only nutritional benefit juice offers is Vitamin C and they should only have 1 serving (8 oz) a day because of the sugar content.

For those criticizing her doctor, she said he told her to “start incorporating drinks at meal time”. So basically what I described above. It’s just training, like how we start with pureed carrots and eventually they’re munching on baby carrots… There’s a transition to it all.

Good luck!
