My daughters doctor thinks she should stop taking birth control

Periods aren’t necessary unless you’re trying to get pregnant. I take the depo shot specifically so I don’t have to deal with a period.

Her not having a period for that long is not natural. The body is supposed to have a period. Find a simple birth control that allows her to have a cycle.

Try the nexplenon. It has lower risk of blood clots than the pill.

I’d probably let her choose since it’s her body… I also probably wouldn’t have put my daughter on anything unless she wanted to be on it… this is weird.

Definitely let her make that choice. I’d recommend an iud

The nexplenon goes in your arm and last for 3 years.

Not having a period puts you at risk for ovarian cancer. It’s not natural.

Ya I didn’t get my my period for almost 10 year while I was on the pill. I now have POS. It’s I’m balanced hormones. I wish I had been wormed about that

Ask doc for a low hormone dose bc pill
I wouldn’t advice the arm iud bc. I was getting my period on that almost the whole month w horrible mood swings.
The depo shot u can also stop getting ur period. Everyone’s body is different.

She’s 18 I would let her make her own decisions …I recommend the iud or the shot …always hated the pill…

She’s 18… why are you still trying to make decisions for her!

Doctor right… My wife was have hers about every 2 weeks. Heavy and sometime out of the blue no warning cramps or anything. They put her on the pill to make her reg and been working fine for the 3 years she been on them .
She asked getting off of them he didnt recommend it so she staying on them

I personally feel like this is a conversation you should be having with your daughter. Ask the Dr for options and both of you research together and she can decide what she feels is best for herself. Don’t choose for her, help her to be more educated about it.

Any birth control can stop your period, birth control basically tricks your body into think you are pregnant so you don’t get pregnant. I would have her talk to a ogbyn and see what they recommend

An old-fashioned diaphragm can be used alone, or in combination with pills or an IUD. It can be inserted with gel while dressing, but the secret to 100% success may be inserting a foam contraceptive briefly before removal.

I have the birth control patch 1 patch every week and then off the 4th week for your period

do NOT get her an IUD. my best advise…

I have an IUD havnt had one in years. They told me my thyroid levels are messed up but the medicine they put me on made me so sick. So I havnt gone back yet but I know I need too eventually.

I wouldn’t recommend the shot, I got it after my last baby and I was bleeding like a month straight and gaining weight like crazy :unamused:
I’m going back on pill

Let her speak to a gynea herself. She is after all 18. From my experience, after a long time on the pill, she will have a wierd flow for a while but better get her to a doctor to be safe.

I was on depo for almost 2 years. It worked great but it did make me gain some weight

At 18 shouldn’t she be making those decisions on her own?

I was on the pill then got massive stomach pains Near the time of my period. Like pains that will bring you to ur knees in pain. Then was switched to another pill and was sick almost every other day with more stomach pains. Turns out I was allergic to the pill. Then my doctor put me on the path and it was the best method and easiest thing to remember. You were the patch for a week, then change it, then you have 1 week off of the patch for ur period week.

I had the Mirena IUD and had terrible cramping. I currently have the Kyleena IUD and I love it!!
I spot/have a light cycle 1x a month.

I don’t advise the shot or Nexplonon arm implant. Also the wording on this whole post makes me go . “I’ve had my daughter on BC.” Does she want to be on it? BC causes long term effects in some that could be something small like irregular periods forever or as far as infertility issues (like it caused for myself)

MINI PILL!!! It has no estrogen, just progesterone to prevent pregnancy. It’s what I’ve taken since 15 for the exception of the 5 years I had the mirena bc I wasn’t reliable with the pill during that time.
The mini pill never had any effect on my periods, mood, PMS symptoms… nothing.

And your daughter is probably getting her period every 2 weeks bc her body is trying to adjust to not having the estrogen anymore… it should improve

All hormonal birth control can have have serious side effects and people act like it’s no big deal.
Teens. Shouldn’t. Be. on. Birth control.
Teach them about their body and sex. Teach them sex isn’t something you should have just cause you can. Teach them about male and female condoms, spermicide and natural family planning.

go with the iud if she can!!!

I had the iud for 5 years made me nauseous everyday I switched to the arm bar thing and still have my days but mostly works good

The pill gave me periods, monthly, till I was 65. I stopped the pill at 35. I needed a hysterectomy to stop my periods @ 65

I personally liked the patch, it worked great & helped manage my cycle & cramps!
& I also liked the Maderna ring. It looks like a glow stick braclett lol! Goes into vagina like a tampon & comes out the same way. Works like the patch, u chnge it every week then off for a week for your cycle. Easy to use & u can just forget it’s there cause u don’t feel it at all!

Iud can be pretty painful to insert for someone who hasn’t had babies yet. I’m pretty sure they can offer sedation for this though. I have the mirena coil and it’s amazing. I’m on my 3rd 1. No periods though but I see that as a bonus. The hormones released aren’t directly into your blood stream so it’s safer in that respect. Regular checking of it and change it every 5 years. Simples. X

Condoms. Birth control is so bad for you!

I would have her read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and start to heal her body from the toxicity that BC causes.

I’m not sure how comfortable she is with herself but I like the nuvaring. It hasn’t affected my cycle all that much other than cutting it from 7 days to 3 or 4

See if she wants to try the nuvaring. I personally loved it

I take crystelle, I think it’s a lower hormone pill but still effective against pregnancy. It also helps my periods be bearable, acne, and lessen unwanted hair.

Give her 6 months to become regular.
My daughter 21 and has been on BC for 4 years and her doctor told her anything more then 3 years without a 6 month to a year break from any kind of hormone therapy has been found to cause a need for a hysterectomy before 35 and a cause of fertility issues.
She really needs too just listen too her doctor

Why don’t you let her decide seeing as she’s nearly 18

Anal or blow jobs are the only sure way to not get pregnant … anything else is not 100%

Is she sexually active? if she’s not there no since of pumping her with hormones maybe talk to her about alternatives and give her body a brake she’s so young…

Has the Dr tried her on provera? It is used to start and stop periods.
If the Dr hasn’t I highly recommend finding her a new Dr for a second opinion. I have struggled with either not having a period for months at a time or having a period for months at a time and mine were controlled with provera before I had a hysterectomy in 2021.

I was on the DEPO shot for a couple years n didn’t get my period once during it. Than wen I stopped getting it I got my period n it didn’t stop for 2 or 3 MONTHS! I asked my Dr n he had no clue. But since than I’ve heard a few other women say that either their periods came every other week or they had extremely heavy periods or they lasted way too long. Wen I first got my period it was all dark dark brown blood. Than 2 or 3 weeks later it finally lightened up to a normal color. So maybe I just had too much built up? If that’s even possible idk. But it’s very normal to have wonky period after bc

It takes a while for the cycle to settle. She needs to use a barrier method for a while such as condoms or cap to give her body a break.

Before I had my surgery I’ve tried the pill, patch, and the one that goes in your arm. The one that worked best for me was the patch. No weight gain, crazy hormones, and it got my cycle back on track.

condoms. pull put method

Let her take a break from bc for a while. Have her use spermicide and condoms (I’d give her female condoms so males can’t make an excuse on why they won’t wear one)

I loved the nuvaring. It helped regulate my cycles and I didn’t have to remember to take a pill every day.

Maybe the Depo shot?

Try the Nuvaring? I actually ended with a surprise pregnancy on an IUD so I personally wouldn’t recommend😅

She is much more fertile so be careful if she is sexually active. A friends doctor told her to take it for a while then get off…boom she was pregnant after trying for 3 years so be careful.

Could take up to 6 months before her cycles regulate

I was on depo for 3 months( one dose ) list my cycles got it once in almost 2 years ( didn’t go back to normal till I had my first ) I’m now on the IUD (4 years) no cycles ,but that’s normal, I’ve had no issues with it ( if she hasn’t had a baby yet I suggest ( depo patch or continue with her pills) ( some say IUD insertion is easier after first pregnancy)

I have the implant in my arm and the first year and a half I didn’t get my period, I’ve had it for 3 years now. It’s always different. I love it. Now I get my period more frequently but this is what works best for me.

I got my IUD for this exact reason!

She’s almost 18 let her decide what she want to do its her body

Birth control pills are full of hormones and are often more damaging then we think probably look for something else.

The best thing to do would take her to a family planning class so she can learn to track her cycle and avoid her fertile window, as well as using condoms. Birth control just messes us up worse and can have horrible side effects so I’d avoid it unless she has a medical condition like pcos, Endo etc that is better managed with bc.

Birth control is horrible. Especially for young women who’s hormones aren’t naturally regulated yet. That being said, I know some women don’t want to take that chance so look into the low hormone birth control pills

Many birth controls stop periods depends on her body. I was on the pill and I had the IUD and my period stopped on both.

She is old enough to understand and choose her own method. Provide her with information and let her make a choice. I chose my most recent bc based off of information from planned parenthood’s website.
Ask if she prefers hormonal or non-hormonal, look up side effects together, narrow the search down together, then talk to her doctor, together if your daughter prefers.

My daughter has Nexplanon and loves it!

My doctor told me wen I was on the pill u don’t need to have a period unless u want to stop the pill to get pregnant

What does SHE want… old enough to discuss her body with her Dr.

I say it’s better then having unwanted pregnancy. You don’t have to have a period in order to be healthy.

Birth Control is so bad for the female body. But is should be up to her but I am strongly against birth control it effected me so negatively and now I am trying to get pregnant and pray that years of using those awful man made pills didn’t cause permanent damage. good luck <3

I was on the pill for a couple of years and got pregnant with my daughter after having my daughter I went on the arm implant (nexplanon) I had that for three years I had irregular period, significant weight gain and mood swings after getting that removed I started with a copper, non hormonal IUD (paraguard) I have my period regularly now the downside can be heavier flow and worse cramps.

Is she taking them everyday, because if she is that will stop ur period my doctor told me. And if you skip a week every 3 weeks that’s when she’s suppose to be getting her cycle

I am assuming you are talking about a GYN Dr & not a regular Dr, If you are talking about a GYN, then listen to that Dr, if it’s a regular family Dr, then let her go to a GYN

I do NOT miss the psycho constant cycles after being on bc…

I had to have a d&c to stop my constant cycle…

Have her talk to her Dr about her options, make sure she’s educated… hormonal birth control can be a pain…

Hugs!

She doesn’t need her cycle if she ain’t wanting to get pregnant. The only reason for cycle is to prepare the uterus for the egg implanting.
My 17 year old has been on birth control since 15. Not sexually active. Still a virgin. Hasn’t had a period since she got on it. She is on the shot every three months. I see no problem. She likes not having a period. I was on birth control for years never had a period.

I was on depo from 2007-2011, 18-22 and gained 120lbs. Got married in 2011 we met the year before. I was still under my dad’s roof when I was 18 and he made me get Depo or have no where to live. My normal cycle was totally MIA from 2007-2017. I started keto October 24th 2017 at 272.6 and within 2 weeks my cycle came back & was regular (31 days) by June 2019 and I’ve lost all that depo weight. I’m 5’0 I didn’t have any issues with hormones until depo then I was diagnosed with PCOS insulin resistance and estrogen dominance, blood work and ultrasound, I had gotten blood work and an ultrasound pre depo and it didn’t show anything out of the ordinary, and I broke my left leg almost 3 years after stopping depo. I had all over bone pain (especially my left hip) that was always overlooked by planned parenthood and they never once mentioned the importance of vitamin d and calcium while taking it. I started intermittent fasting January 1st 2020 at 222 and have been walking since starting keto along with using my elliptical crosstrainer, resistance bands and 5lb dumbbells. Today I’m 146 goal is 125. No family history of infertility or PCOS etc. I’m the only one who used depo and the only one who doesn’t have a child of my own, everyone else has at least 2.

Pills made me sick…I’ll stick with the nuvaring

Ask her what SHE wants to do. And listen to her opinion. She’s the one on the birth control, no matter the form of it. Take her to a gynecologist to talk to a specialist about it. Primary care doctors don’t know so much about birth control.

I stopped having cycles a certain couple of pills. It is just bc there is no lining and a normal response some women get. I started the pill around age 15 bc of bad periods. I quit taking them at around age 27 and got pregnant within 3 months of stopping the pill. Get a second opinion. They could always do a lower dose pill if they preferred but if you find a pill that works that well then I’d keep it.

I’d say try a different pill. They make more than one specific pill for reasons like this. And, ask her for her opinion - there may have been other “side effects” of the pill she was happy with or things she just flat hated. Let her know all her options. It’s her body - it should be her choice.

Try the implant in her arm… 3 or 5 yrs but can be taken out at anytime. She still has a cycle every month but isn’t bad… maybe 3 days on (depending on the person).

The pill didn’t work for me. Got pregnant with both of mine on the pill taking it like I was suppose to. I just had to take a low dose due to other issues.

Also, If she’s bleeding like that now she may have to have her uterus lining scraped (DnC). That helped me 100%!! I was definitely glad to have it done. I went to my gyno & he did it.

She’s young to have no cycle and it’s probably every two weeks because her body is regulating itself and we did similar things with patients who were younger when i worked in OBGYN. IUD is the way to go. I got it years ago and it was a miserable experience, went through every type I could since then, and got it again and have had zero issues but again no cycle so I would ask her doctor

I would ask her Dr. what they reccomend. There are other BC pills that may work. Or there are shots now adays. (But I have mixed feelings about those as well ) her doctor would be your best judge of what to try next. At least that’s my opinion. Good luck.

Yes that is normal. Her body is trying to become regular again. For other forms of bc I would take her in and have her obgyn talk to her and tell her all her options (pros and cons) the depo shot was the only thing I could ever take. I’m very fertile, I have 6 children(one we adopted) but as long as I was on the shot never once got pregnant. It also helps keep my hormones balanced. But it does cause me to have no periods. I still to this day take it off and on even with my husband being snipped due to bad periods (makes me have none at all) and to help balance hormones

I use the patch always have works great change it every Sunday for 3 weeks than the 4th Sunday you leave it off for a week and that’s when you get your cycle doesn’t come off with swimming or bathing just make sure you alternate sides or your skin will get irritated

Maybe she needs to try a different pill but it’s not normal to not have a period on the pill. I’ve been on them for 16 years except when I went off them so hubby and I could have a baby but I still got my period every month unless I started a pack right after another to “skip” it for vacation or whatever. It’s possible the birth control she was on had too low estrogen or just wasn’t the right pill for her. I had to try 5 to find the one that works best for me.
