So ok,I’ve had my daughter on the pill for almost 3 yrs now(she’s almost 18)… I recently was advised by a doc to take her off it bc she hasn’t had her cycle in almost the whole 3 yrs that she’s been on it(she lost her cycle the month after putting her on the pill)…Since taking her off the pill she’s been having her cycle, but has it every 2 wks now?..Has anyone else experienced this?..What other b.c method should she use?..I’ve had the IUD myself & it didn’t work for me(not that I got pregnant, but I had problems with it)& I’m not too iffy about it being her safety method… Don’t know what to do for her.
Help a mama out and respond anonymously on our forum. My daughters doctor thinks she should stop taking birth control
Honestly being on birth control made me have a period every other week. I was so miserable. I haven’t been on it in months and it took about 3 to get my cycle back on track
If she not planning on having a child right now there is nothing wrong with birth control stopping her cycle
I got the implant in my daughter’s arm.
Keep her off the pill! Let her cycle normalize, this can take several months. Maybe in a year or so the doctor might recommend trying a different pill, there’s 100s! But I highly recommend NOT being on birth control, especially at this young of an age.
I was on DEPO shot at that age and didn’t have a cycle. My doctor wasn’t worried
I prefer implant if I am on bc. Have liked that most since 17
Xulane patch. Loved it. 3 weeks on 1 week off. Put a new patch on every week. The 1 week off allows for menstruation to take place.
I swear by the patch! Everybody’s body is different & can react differently but I tried multiple through the years & that was by far my favorite! It was convenient & I had zero side effects.
Try asking her what she wants. It’s not up to you. Have her do her own research and her talk to the Dr.
You do nothing
She’s almost 18 and should be in charge of her own reproductive health at this point
It should between her and her doctor now not you, her doctor, and Facebook
Nexplanon is the implant in the arm it’s good
I did well on BC pills. but i wonder if is what caused my brain tumor. I have a benign brain tumor that affects my abilities/personality. Neurology doesnt know what exactly causes them but mostly WOMEN get these tumors. They THINK maybe bc pills cause them. Ive seen this on my tumor support page too. They can have some crumby side/after effects. I have iud right now im not sure i like it yet is fairly new to me.
I went on the pill at 17. Very rarely got my period. Went off the pill at 20 as my husband and I had just gotten married and we wanted to start a family in the next couple years. I NEVER got my period back after stopping the pill for years. And when I did it was very very irregular. We ended up having to go to doctor after doctor and specialist after specialist and I was diagnosed with PCOS onset by the Birth control pills. It took 5 years to get pregnant with our child. So all I can say is due your research and BC options because some of them can cause massive problems.
My sisters and I use a low hormone one. More important to make sure take steadily.
The mini pill may be an option. It’s non hormonal.
I’d definitely wait it out until her period can normalize itself, then maybe look into a low hormonal birth control. When I was 15 I was put on birth control with low estrogen I think and it helps a ton. Just tell her if she plans on being active to make sure she’s using protection and at the very least by her condoms for her. Definitely wouldn’t be a bad option in the mean time.
My wife has the arm implant. Works great. Then when we want to have kids go get it taken out. She’s mean on the pill and the shot was making her break out. The implant thing works great.
There is zero reason for her to come off birth control. We don’t NEED a period. It’s not vital for survival. We won’t fill up with toxins and die or that nonsense.
Why don’t you ask her doctor? Or another doctor
That sounds about right. I was on the depo, Yazmin or whatever it was called, and if they’re hormonal BC it’ll really mess up your hormones. Then I was on the seasonal/seasonique shot for a while and that really messed me up because I only had 4 periods a year. Hormones get really fucked up when you’re on BC.
I would check her like hormone producing organs (specially thyroid) to see if there is another reason for no peripd
Honestly she needs off of it at least a year to regulate out and I’m not convinced birth control is not why I have had so many issues conceiving
I’d recommend reading the Period Repair Manual by Laura Briden. It’s a great book with lots of incredible information.
I’ve had the Nexplanon 3 times and never got a period on it, never gained weight, and had no side effects. When I was ready for my babies, I took it out both times and got pregnant within a month with my first pregnancy and within 3 weeks with this pregnancy with no periods.
What pill was she on?
Don’t put her back on it. Like others have said, it isn’t your place to make decisions for her body. My mother forced me to get Implanon at 15. I had it almost the whole 3 years (until I moved out and got to have it removed because it was my choice). I gained a bunch of weight because of it and have had weight issues ever since.
Have her do her research on all options. If she is sexually active, I would buy her condoms and spermicide, at least until she makes her decision.
Nexplanon works great for me and i do get my period
No need for a period that’s why they made mirena and some women don’t get a period for the 5 years it’s implanted so no worries! If concerned talk to an actual obgyn dr
This should be between her and her doctor.
I’m on depo. When I skip my shots for to long I end up getting irregular cycles. Give it some time and they will get back on track for her. I’m on dep and don’t get cycles which I LOVE. Tried to get my doc to give me a full hysterectomy when I had my tubes tied but she refused lmao. I was only 25 at the time lmao.
I’ve been on depo for 5.5 years, no period for me, it’s only progesterone, she gets it once every 3 months, i started pills at 18, i used tri cyclen low, dose try that or the mini pill
Have you tried different pills? I’ve always been on levest never had any problems
I have been on the pill for 11 years and haven’t had a period. My doc says it’s fine.
The DEPO helped my wife
My daughter is on depo and she is so much happier then when she was on the pill.
Have you asked her what she wants ? I personally would not want to take the pill it to was messing with my cycle that bad.
There is spermicide strips that I have used for years. Top that with condoms and I’d say that makes a decent BC
Periods aren’t needed. It’s not like all getting stopped up and clogged in her uterus…it’s just not forming or forming VERY VERY little very slowly. That doc is a quack. Her her back on BC till she decides what’s next in her reproductive life. I haven’t had a period in over a decade and I’m really loving it
Nuva ring! I highly recommend it .
I think BC shouldn’t be something used your entire adult life. It’s not healthy for your body to be on it for so long. It is not normal to just stop something that is meant to happen (periods)
Honestly go with something that is nonhormonal. It isn’t good for your body to be always on them like that. Also have you asked her if she even wants to be on a bc? She’s almost 18 she should decide if she wants to be in one or not.
My doctor made me take a break after 3 years. She’s almost 18, can’t she discuss it with her doctor?
The patch! Wear it 3 weeks take off 4th and have period.
I didn’t have a cycle the whole 8 years I did the depo shot. I was fine.
My daughter uses the patch. Works well for her
The patch!! No hormone affects, no acne break outs, period once a month, weekly patch change. Best birth control I’ve been on.
Our 19 year old is on the Depo, has been since 15, only issue she’s had is weight gain, but if you ask her, that ain’t no issue compared to what comes with a baby
I didn’t have a proper period for 10 years because of my birth control (once every few years I’d spot but barely) and still haven’t gotten one despite not getting my birth control for 8 months and my doctor says that’s fine
If she’s almost 18 then it’s her decision on what she wants to do and what choice she makes about her own body. Some people don’t have periods and some do. I was on the DEPO shot for 3yrs, been on the pill, had nuvaring and never had a period. Was in the IUD from last may till about a month ago , and got pregnant and made me bleed for almost 2straight months. Everyone’s body is different
I think going with a non-hormonal, non invasive option is best
I was on depo from 15 to 18 my doctor recommended the same thing as well I then began to use simicid it’s like those sponges didn’t have any issues
I was on the depo shot as a teen
I was on the pill years ago. I had problems with weight gain and my cycle was all over the place. I got the IUDs and man that was awful. I found out I was allergic to copper and the other one I had to get surgery because it floated and ended up in my abdomen. I got the the birth control that they inject into your arm. I don’t remember what it was called but I never had a problem with it.
I LOVED the arm implant personally
No, that’s not fine. I dont know why people say this on this comment section. It could be a symptom of endometriosis,PCOS BC causes it pretty much. she might have hormonal problems since she has been on it that long, may be needs correction. It’s going to affect her health, especially with weight and reproductive organs.Take her to your obgyn dr for some extra tests, he/she sound reasonable.
I personally liked the Nexplanon. There’s also the copper IUD that has no hormones.
If she wants to be on birth control let her, if she doesn’t she doesn’t have to. It’s her decision since she’s almost 18. Ask her what does she want. The doctor could probably give her a temporary birth control to take for a month or 2 to help her have periods once a month. For me birth control has messed up my cycles, and made my cramps worse than when I’m off so I don’t recommend taking birth control. Teach her about safe sex, using condoms.
I loved my depo shot BUT it also stopped my period and is also the cause of my numerous miscarriages. Not saying it wouldn’t be right for her but I’d definitely look into something with less hormones.
Try the mini pill. You do have to take it every day though
This is between her and her dr since she is off age. Have her do research on which is best for her. I personally was on the birth control pill had my cycle every month. Ask her what she wants
Long term use of birth control can cause a lot of health issues. Bring her in to get her checked on.
I’d say she’s old enough to make the decision for herself with some guidance from you and her doctor. Unless there were genuine concerns for her health I don’t see why anything needed to change as a period is not required to be healthy. I’m assuming the doctor saw something in testing of some sort?
My 16 and 17 year old daughters are on the Depo. No issues yet they been on for about 6 months now
Condoms.
Cheap effective and no hormones.
Used them effectively and consistently for 10 years and only became pregnant when I stopped!
Imo anything that makes your body not do what it naturally should do can’t be good for you in the long run.
It is not good at all to go 3 years with no cycle. Every 2 weeks isnt bad but not great. Theres ton of different birth controls out there. Even other pills that may work better than what she was on. Deff talk to her doc or get a new one.
She should probably see another doctor to get a second opinion. I’ve seen several doctors and nurses to finally get what worked best for me. Everybody’s body is different.
I like the patch , you change every 7 days and skip your period week
The patch. Worked great for me for years
Nuva ring or patches so she can actually still have a menses. 3 years is a LONG time to go without having a flow, and is pretty bad for the body. Her bleeding every 2 weeks is probably her body playing catch up
I had the same issues on the pill though, definitely much improvement with the patches. Then switched to Nuva ring
Its normal to lose your period when on birth control. Lots of people go on it for that reason alone, to stop their periods.
The patch! No side affects. You change it once a week for 3 weeks. Then you skip a week to get your period. You can put it anywhere on your body except for your breasts. I love it!
Ive had the implant 3 times never any issues. Didnt bleed first 2 but last one ive got this time i come on as normal every month. Never had any issues with it. X
She is going to be 18 you need to let her choose if she wants to go on with birth control or just to stop. Parents need to stop trying to control their adult children life
Yea that’s very dangerous for her not to have her period for that long. I read an article years ago about a young woman who had died from the chemicals and stuff that they put in birth control that stops or limits your periods to like only a few months a year.
I’ve had the depo since I was 19.
I’m now almost 27.
I’ve had 2 breaks, 1 when had our 1st son and a good 2yr break when we had our second.
I haven’t had any fertility issues, weight issues etc while being on the depo. My breaks were 5 years apart
Her hormones are adjusting. That can take a while.
She should probably go back and have a sit down with the Dr about various b.c. methods. She may advise using condoms until her hormones go back to normal. Sit with her & research so she can have questions ready for her Dr.
Condoms I have been using them my whole life, only stopped when I wanted a baby, they dnt interfere with any hormones…
I was put on birth control when I was 22 (never was on it as a teenager) because for one I do not have a regular cycle and never have, but also in high school my periods started making me physically sick so I was put on birth control to stop my periods from making me sick and to even out my cycles so they were regular. I had a kind though where I still had cycles every month because I was afraid to have one that stopped periods. I honestly don’t remember the name cuz it’s been so long, but I think it may have been called Ortho Tri-Cyclin.
The IDU was the WORST thing I ever did!!! Is she sexually active. If not I would give her body a break
WOW on BC at 15…I can’t get past that!!!
People are so friggen ignorant it’s not even funny
After being on birth control for an extended period of time it can take months for your period to return and then once it’s back it can take a few more months for it to regulate itself.
I was on the DEPO for a very long time and it can start affecting your bone density, among other things. Coming off of it is an insane process too (nausea, hot flashes, dizziness etc)
Just because someone comes off of birth control it doesn’t mean they’ll get pregnant right away like people have been programmed to think.
Doctors put these young girls on this crap and then they wonder why they have fertility issues YEARS later when trying to start a family.
Let her live her life. If she’s sexually active then school her on the importance of using other methods of protection
Nuvaring is amazing for me, been using it for years, doesn’t mess with my mental health and I can basically choose when I have a period. No remembering pills, no invasive procedures, completely fantastic and cannot praise it enough
I’m not sure why he was concerned about her period stopping? A lot of birthcontrols do that and people get on it for that specific reason lol. Was it effecting her health in a bad way? If it wasn’t then your doctor just put your kiddo through an necessary and uncomfortable process.
Personally I always recommend the implant. I’ve had it 4 times and love it.
I’d let her choose if she wants to be on birth control or not. If she chooses not too, just give her condoms. I fell pregnant 3 times on 3 different types of birth control.
My daughter was the pill and my son was implanon. Then I fell pregnant a third on the depo shot.
If she’s having one every 2 weeks idt birth control is your problem. I was also on BC pills when I suddenly started hemoraging. Later I would be diagnosed with a rare female blood disorder called ITP. Ask them to test her spleen and platelet count. Mine was at 21 when I almost died.
Definitely get her off the pill. Talk to a GYN about other BC option. Don’t use the ones that completely stop it for months. That’s also detrimental to her body. God bless.
She’s 18 let her choose. I habe hormone issues. I bled soo much on borth control I chose none. I didn’t habe kids til 21. No regrets. One kid at 21 and one at27 . Just let her be an adult.
Honestly, the pill was my only go to and every year since I was 15, it would mess something up with my body. When I turned 18, I completely stopped taking it cuz it was to much for my body. And I will say, I didn’t have a regular period without it for a few months but after that, everything was normal and I couldn’t imagine getting back on any type of bc. It made me feel awful being on it and if you can’t find anything for her, I would give her the decision if she wants it or not (considering she’s almost 18, anyways)
There are always other ways to stay safe to avoid pregnancy.
Hope all goes well for your daughter
Being on birth control too long will cause fertility issues later too
It can take up to 3 months after getting off bc for ur period to regulate if it’s been longer than that I’d get her checked and ask what else to put her on
I haven’t had mine for nearly 12 years due to my birth control and I’m only in my early 30’s. Not sure why her doctor was so concerned about it… maybe it’s time for a new doctor or second opinion?
Let her talk to the dr. And have her figure it out it’s not your body or your decision
Go with non hormonal pills. She’ll still have her period.
I was on the depo injection for 6 years then I came off it but that worked well for me only problem was weight gain
Lo Ovral I put on at age 12 to regulate my periods had to problem with it
I have the mirena and I love mine.Been on it for 5 years .No cycle and no break through bleeding .1 more year I get it out and I’ll have another one put in.I never had issues and I was scared but I love it.Not having to worry about taking the birth control pill
Let her choose she’s old enough to be advised by a dr and make her own choice.
I second mini pill! Less hormones and it shouldnt affect her period
The copper iud is great as it has no hormones and therefore people typically don’t have a problem with it.
