My kids will not keep their seatbelt buckled

Tips on 4&2 year old not keeping their seatbelt buckled? My 4 year old is fine most of the time, but my 24 month old literally always unbuckles and it’s so stressful when I have to drive.

Sometimes it takes someone other than Mom telling them. Take them to the police station or fire station and have those guys tell them how dangerous it is to be unbuckled & how important it is that they buckle. Make sure to tell the kids that police & fire fighters are there to keep them safe & they are their friends. That is the only thing that made my kids stop trying to escape their car seats.

What kind of carseat is the 2 year old in? The bottom strap release should not be that easy to push. My 5 year old struggles most days. As for the top strap release that is simple to undo however they make covers for them to stop kids from undoing them. They make them for the bottom as well but I would definitely look into your carseat because the 2 year old shouldn’t be able to get out of that easily.

Tbh I was very honest with our (then probably 3 year old, who’s now 6) and explained to him that he needed to wear it or he would die. I said it a little nicer, of course. But he’s always been very mature and unfortunately has been around death (losing my grandpa and great grandma) and he understood that he wouldn’t be able to see mama or daddy again or Rebel (dog). It was a very open and honest conversation about what could happen. This doesn’t work for everyone tho. I think it would depend on the maturity level and if they understood what death was… sometimes the scare tactic is the best way.

They sell seatbelt covers, so your child cannot unbuckle. I have them for my niece she us special needs and its the only way to keep her in her seatbelt. I got two for $7 on Amazon

I tell my children if they dont buckle up,they will die! Ur head will be ripped off by another car…hey, the truth is scary but it works

I stopped the car when my granddaughter unbuckled her car seat and wouldn’t start the car until she put it back on,I told her the car wouldn’t run unless she was buckled in,after ten minutes in the hot sun she put it on.

I’m old school. Either take them and have a police officer explain to them why being buckled is important or show them videos of kids being ejected from cars. Or next time he unbuckles, slam your brakes on. (If your softy, pull over on side of road first)

Show them videos of what happened when children don’t keep their seatbelt on … and explain it to them

They should both still be in car seats , I’m not sure how your 2 year old can unbuckle… get different ones if you have to

I thought they made baby proof things to go over them now? Or are we that behind we make baby proofers for everything but car safety

Go in a parking lot and slam on brakes one time…they won’t do it again :kissing_heart:

My 3 year old grandson did it once for me. I pulled over and cracked his butt. Never did it again.

The fire department! You can go into their office or call your local department and tell them the situation, most of the time they are more than willing to help

The 5 point harness on the 2 year olds car seat should be too hard to push. That’s strange for sure. I had my 4 year old still in a harness car seat as well. I agree with the police station visit

Scare the hell out of them, spank their hands, brake check or whatever you have to do. My grandson was 4.5 yrs old when he took the strap under his arm and was involved in a motor vehicle accident and is now a paraplegic. The danger is real!!!

Your 2 year should be in carseat not in booster seat

Do about 60 slam on the brakes let them hit your head in front seat or dash a couple times they all buckle up

Find a cop that will take the time to talk with them about safety

4&2 year olds should be in a harnessed car seat, not a seat belt.

Show them a video on Youtube of a kid flying out of a car. Tap the brakes in a parking lot and scare them a smidge. Be honest with them and tell them they could die. Kids are pretty damn good at handling the truth if you break it down for them. In fact, they often do better with the truth than some fluffed up feel good story.

What I did is buckled my son’s car seat and then I tied a piece of ribbon under the buckle part

I refused to drive unless seatbelts are fastened
I still do this even with adults

How are they reaching the seatbelt buckle from the car seat? Mine struggled to buckle/unbuckle from boost seats…

There is a thing available to cover the buckle so they can’t. Saw it on Amazon but I don’t know what it’s called, sorry. Seatbelt guard or something

They are way too young to be using seatbelts. The youngest needs to be rear faced and the oldest needs a high back five pounds harness.

Flip the straps around so it’s facing them

Break check, worked on both kids. :beers:

And I’m over here with my 6year old that can’t unbuckle him self :joy::woman_facepalming:t4:

Honestly, I was never gentle gentle about these kinds of things because it’s a non negotiable and very dangerous.
So yes, if they touched belt buckles or were trying to be silly in car seats they’d be in trouble. And if need be, we will all sit here doing nothing for as long as it takes to sit and do as you’re asked.

Seat belt guard on Amazon can never be too safe my cousins kid did this and she turned around for a half a second and wrecked a car and it was very bad circumstances

Put a button down shirt on them that’s a few sizes too big. Button it after buckling them in over their buckle
