My neighbor stole a package off my front porch: How should I handle this?

My sister had an Amazon package stolen awhile back also at an apartment complex. It was a firestick. She spoke with customer service and they investigated it and because of the picture they take when it’s delivered they were able to see it was not left in a secure location, so they sent credited her for it. It was a process of course, but she got her money back. Maybe she just got lucky or spoke to the right person…but if it was just left at ur door in an apartment complex like that, try customer service and be stern.

Police report, and may want to ask apt. Manager if you’re allowed to add a camera or ring device in fear of retaliation.

You can also have packages delivered to a locker amazon has set up to prevent things like this. I was lucky and lived in a complex where management installed lockers for this reason for us to be able to pick up at any time and it took them out of the picture. But I Also lived in a complex where a neighbors package if left out would still be there days later no one messed with it. I had a package dropped off one time where I couldn’t find it. Come to find out the ups guy walked around to my back porch and leaned over the railing and put the package by our porch door.

Ok first if the kids returned stuff what kind of example is she setting. She needs to be accountable even if it was kids. Tell property manager and file report. If a she confronts you explain you had to do that in order to get a refund and started process before finding items

Show her the pictures Amazon sent… tell her she committed a crime, tell her your issues (pills being taken, things being opened, xyz) give her a chance to speak then tell her it’s unexceptional and not excusable… if her attitude turns sour tell her your going to report it… personally I don’t wanna go turning her in but if she turns sour then bye

All of the above! The police, the apartment complex, and write her ass a letter and include the pictures!! This is unacceptable!!..Plus you don’t know if her kids didn’t ingest the pills. ???

Definitely file. If she thinks there’s not going to be repercussions what’s to stop her from doing it again?

I guess it really depends what type of people your dealing with … At my age I would prefer to live in peace and just let it be and just not have packages delivered anymore .

I don’t think it was her kids that did it because they would not have willingly given them to you

Yes I’d file a police report!

File a police report. The package wasn’t addressed to her, nor was it delivered to her. She very obviously stole it and opened it up.

I would not even confront her , she knew what she was doing . So just file police report and tell apartment manager

Charge her . Contact the landlord and let him about his awesome tenant . Also let other tenants know what had happened incase you guys are targets .

File a police report. If she doesn’t face any consequences, it’s very likely she will do it again. I’d confront her first and show her the proof you have.

Steal one of her kids, and when (or if) she comes for it, make sure to return it with less than it came with. Fingers, toes, ears, clothes, toys - you decide. Guarantee she won’t steal from you again, and neither will her kids. All the birds, one toe. :woman_shrugging:

I would contact the apartment manager. I don’t think filing a police report would do anything unless they need a paper trail but I would definitely contact the police and explain the situation and ask them what you should do. It sounds like you got everything back minus 2 pills, though I wouldn’t trust the pills after she opened them, so I’m not sure you could really get her on anything at the moment.

I can’t imagine a single mom would intentionally steal something from her neighbour. If the kids gave it to you right away that says to me that one of them took it, opened it, and the stuff, and then when you come to the door they gave it back to you.

Yes, kids will open pill bottles if they can. I’d be willing to bet they didn’t tell their mom either, they know they’d get in trouble.

Some of the local police departments are accepting packages so all you have to do is show that you ordered it show your ID with your address and pick it up there there are some delivery sites that do the same thing with your ID and your package i d. And I would get one of those new doorbells with the camera that attaches to your phone and inform your neighbor that you now have one

Probably the kids took the package, opened the bottle and tasted the pills threw it away. really how did the kids knew about the package and gave it back to you if they didn’t take it. Now adays kids will take anything that isn’t nailed down or some kids. You didn’t say how old the kids.

Police aren’t going to do anything. Your stolen property was returned to you. I would have all future shipments sent to my work or you can pick it up from the shipper. As for the neighbors, I would drop the kids off a “thank you, for doing the right thing” plate of cookies and make sure you tell thier mother how proud you are of the kids for returning your items.

Regardless if it was her or her children. She is responsible for everyone. I would take a trip to the police station. Tell them your story and show them your proof. She can reimburse you for a new order. Than I would let your manager know as well.

Also take a trip to Walmart. Buy some wifi security cameras. Have them pointed at your entrance for future events.

Dont talk to her. Contact your apartment manager and file a report with police in case it happens again…(shes probably did it before which is why she said nothing to you she was mad, embarrassed to be caught.) Invest in some security cameras also ( 2 for front and one for back)

Definitely get a security camera set up pointed directly at the ground in front of your door. You will be able to see anything that is going on. Whatever you do have it pointing down at your property, otherwise you can get in trouble. Inform your apartment manager what happened and why you are doing it, and maybe send a note to your neighbor that you installed a camera for the safety of everyone, because you ordered diet pills and 2 were taken and be real nice in the letter. You do not want major issues with neighbors. I would give a copy of the letter you gave her to the apartment manager to keep on file. You shouldn’t have a problem with her again. I would also let her know that the apartment manager has the same letter on file.

Amazon left 2 packages in the communal building 1 for me 1 for neighbour i took them both assumin they were mine as i had placed multiple orders. Ripped then open then realised my mistake. Straight away i returned the package to my neighbours doorstep with a letter explaining the mistake.m today she said thank you and that was the end of it.f your neighbour was innocent she would have approached you like i did with mine. Her silence speaks volumes i guess she thinks shes gotten away with it She is an arrogant thief that needs reporting smh

Talk to your manager to see if your pkgs can be delivered there. Explain where your pkg ended up, how you got items back and show him the picture. Others may complain too. She and kids might be kicked out. I would endeavor to talk to her first before a police report. That is just me though. Making enemies with neighbors w/kids would be my last resort. I started having mine delivered to work cause I worked long hours.

I had a card saying a parcel had been left with my neighbour for me. Sent my son to pick it up for me as i expected it to be quite heavy.
When i opened the box there was one tv wall bracket, but id ordered two so checked online to see where the other one was. Stated that both had been delivered and signed for! Went back to neighbour and asked for second parcel, was given the bracket with no amozon box or packaging. Maybe she thought id been sent 2 by mistake and that it wouldnt hurt if she kept one, worst case , id pay for one i hadnt got. But did she think she would get away with signing for both and keeping one? So annoyed, whatever her reasoning she tried to steal from me. Have given instructions not to leave any future parcels with her and i now know she isnt to be trusted

In my opinion, the items where returned. Just talk to manager and tell her what happened show them the pictures an all. Manager can have a talk with her.

put dog dukie in package leave until she grabs then politely I believe you have my shit

I would talk to her and talk to the manager. I don’t know if I would go so far as file a police report, but I would let her know if it ever happened again that I wouldn’t hesitate to file a report.

I think, if I were you, I would be the adult I am and walk over to her and state the facts from pics etc; I’d also advise her that I didn’t appreciate it and she ought not do those types of things esp when her kids are learning from her behaviour. Tell her you will be advising the manager and make sure everything is voice recorded for any future references and then that’s it. :woman_shrugging:t2: Nothing else you can do. This is such a common sense issue, why do people make themselves out to be so stupid by coming online with minuscule issues and being like “omg what should I do, please help t.i.a “ speak up, be an adult!

Well for one she did u a favour…Keto pills are a total waste of money!! Give them to her for Xmas. Then tell her off for taking what doesn’t belong to her…and then get a camera installed at your door!

Honestly your lucky you even got any of it back. You know how many packages get stolen? Literally hundreds a day. Personally I would have just been happy getting some of my money’s worth they could have lied an told you they didn’t have it if their pathetic enough to steal your package. This is the risk of getting things delivered it’s nearly 2020 you should have seen this coming. I have Amazon Prime an it says what day there delivering an when their out for delivery you should have been watching for it. Also it doesn’t even mark delievered tell like 1-2 hours after they delivered. You could file a civil lawsuit but good luck she gave you your stuff back in the end of the day your literally going to spend hundreds out of your own pocket for like what less than 200 dollars worth of crap. Your manager is going to look at you sideways an tell you that’s your own problem an they don’t care as long as you both pay rent. Literally all together petty.

Yes file a police report.
She needs to learn there are consequences for not only taking the package but opening it. It was clearly addressed to you and not her.
No excuses.

I’d report it. It doesn’t matter if she’s a single mom, that was theft. If you report her to the landlord, the landlord can replay the warning that of she does it again, you will file a police report. Keep all the info, write down exactly what happened in case you need it for the future. If somehow her kids had done it, she will deal with them accordingly.

I have very little patience for theft.

I think I’d let her know I see what she did and these items belong to her now and need to be replaced. Give her a bill for the cost and tell her she needs to pay you what you spent. I’d definitely let the property manager know also. I’d file a police report after this (if she’s unresponsive) if I was you.

My daughter and her friends did this to our new neighbors not long ago…we went to the other two kid’s mom’s and all of us took our kids to the neighbours and made them apologize for opening it ( it was baby formula and cereals) and replace the items. Explained to the kids that tampering with someone’s mail is a crime and grounded my daughter.

Also Have your packages sent to the office from now on

You definitely need to say something to her, stand up for yourself. Otherwise you are sending her the message that you are alright with it and she will infact do it again. You have to set hard boundaries with people or they will walk all over you

I would definitely say something! I always have packages outside my apartment door and no one ever messes with it. Well I only have 1 neighbor in the 3rd floor with me and she is a sweetheart!! Say something now and this will definitely make her not want to do that again!

The fact that she is a single mother of 4 really has no bearing on this. She is also a thief. Police report definitely

Take your proof that you bought the items then tell your landlord or whoever and they could handle it. Theres no excuse for someone stealing. Its theft. Hate that she feels like she has to result in taking things

Add a secure delivery spot. Even a larger storage that had a lock spot and a way to chain that sucker down.

Or next time take that package and fill it with used kitty litter.

I’d file a police report, if her children did it she’s still responsible for them and she still didn’t do the right thing. She could have easily explained the situation and handed them over instead of covering up for her kids then using the items, she could of even returned them anonymously. The more likely scenario is as you said, she stole it expecting it to be presents. Being a single mom isn’t a free pass to steal from your neighbors. Even then maybe if she saw me after and apologized once she was clearly caught I’d consider not reporting it to the police. But to me she’s showing no responsibility for her actions and I’d be reporting it, she wasn’t concerned about ruining your holidays when stealing your property. If you really don’t want to report it I’d at least confront her and/or tell your landlord so it’s clear she’s not just getting away with it and maybe it won’t happen to you or one of your neighbors further into the holiday season.

I’d probably say something to her and wait to file a police report. Only because messing with mail is a federal offense and carries very harsh consequences. I’d remind her of all of this and if it did happen again then I would immediately file with police.

Don’t confront her, report to the apartment manager. You can file a police report, but I doubt they’ll do much as you got the goods back.

I’d file a police report. I can’t stand a thief. Her being a single parent is irrelevant- theft is theft and I have no sympathy for thieves.

We had just installed security cameras prior to some people moving in a few doors down (a rental). Close to the holidays some neighbors had packages come up missing. One of them asked my husband how far the viewing range was. They were expecting some meds (cancer). Also a birthday package for them from a grandchild. 2 good size packages. Also my husband has a dash cam he lets run all the time. We got a good range and quickly caught the culprit. It was one of the new tenants. they also checked out our house and tried to pry open my husband’s toolbox attached to his truck bed. Charges were pressed. Not long after a few of their friends were caught trying to spray paint our cameras. Turns out they were also living in the same rental. Reached out to the landlord but to no avail, they were all related. Problem for them was they couldn’t reach all the cameras. Police eventually had search warrants for items from other neighbors and eventually they were all forced to move to new “tiny” one room homes for a few months. the house has since been put on market.

Call the police and make a report and do the same with the apartment manager. Let them take care of the problem. For years I had my packages delivered to my work address because of this exact problem

Plant a dummy package. Inside the box place packing eggs and a Giftcards box, can be had for a dollar at Dollar Tree, on the box write a tag/sticker, SORRY ITS ONLY CASH MONEY.
Inside the box, leave her ass a letter.
Tell her that you know it’s her, that you have camera proof on video, and proof from amazon that it was delivered to your house, and that stealing other peoples mail is a federal crime.
Tell her if she needs help, as a neighbor you wouldn’t judge her but help her, but as a thief you’re more than willing to prosecute her ass. Let her know this is her last warning and that you forgave her last “mistake” but include the wisdom-first time is a mistake, after that it’s a choice.
And if she chooses to be a thief, you’ll chose to make sure she gets punished.
