My periods never stop: Advice?

Kind of TMI, but wondering if anyone else has gone through this! Back story: when I was 14, I started a period that never stopped. I bled for a year and a half straight; the doctors put me on almost every birth control possible, trying to stop it. The only thing that worked was the IUD. Fast forward, I had the IUD taken out & got pregnant! I had my bundle of joy five months ago. I had the afterbirth bleeding for six weeks. I was stopped for a month. Started bleeding again around New Year & I haven’t stopped since. My doctor is clueless about it. She did some blood work, which all came back normal besides my iron being low (pretty obvious because of the excessive bleeding.), and here we go again trying birth controls to see if it stops it. I don’t want another IUD since we want another baby within the next two years. Has anyone ever had anything like this? Constant bleeding? I don’t go 24 hours without having at least a light amount. Any ideas?

Have they checked for endometriosis or polyps? Do you have pcos? Have they done a d&c?

I had this same problem when I first started my period, I had to have a D&C! Worth looking into!

How would a d&c help this if she isnt pregnant? jc

I would have a physical examination or a ct, or an endoscopy. Typically abnormal bleeding like you’re discussing can be anything from fibroids to PCOS to a polyp. Before medications I would see a doctor to find the root cause

You probably need an ablation or a D&C. I bled for months and months. It was a miserable feeling. Hormone therapy may be needed as well.

I am 3 months pp and still bleeding my ptt came back higher then average I have to see a hemotologist! Have your Dr check your pt and ptt levels for a bleeding disorder!

Sounds like you need a D&C.

theres a little instrument they use for reducing the amount of blood clots during monthly periods.you should mention this to them on your next visit. Tell them i said hi as well :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::joy:

I have endometriosis and have periods like this occasionally. I also know PCOS can cause issues like this as well. Maybe you need to talk to a specialist about a diagnostic surgery

Yup! Had to have an ablation after all other options didnt work.

Sooooo they are putting you on birth control rather than just figuring out what’s going on?

New doctor now

A low dose of metformin helped to regulate mine

Had the same. They did ultrasounds to check for cysts and labs to make sure that wasn’t a blood disorders. Nothing. All clear. Been on high end to low end leveled bc and none helped. If the IUD works for you awesome but my body rejected it twice. I’m assuming you’re using the copper IUD as adding more hormones to your body is proving not working and option with none may be best.

:raising_hand_woman: same issue, here. After baffling many gynecologist, I was finally diagnosed with adenomyosis.

I’m the same I’ve tried all birth control. Next is try coil then I’m been referred for hysterectomy as I’ve 5kids anyway. No idea why mine is I have iron tablets and tranexamic acid. At times have take wkly

Ask for progesterone thats what stopped mine that wouldnt stop for months

Never heard of it. I hope they have you on an iron supplement.

I done that after they took me off birth control for almost a year ending up having to have a hysterectomy at thirty two.

Get back on the IUD. You can take it out whenever…

Change doctors. Go to a tertiary teaching hospital. Not acceptable for your doctor to be clueless.

I have been experiencing this. First time was treated with BC without any testing done. I dont like BC and we want to get pregnant SOON. I am going for a pelvic ultrasound to see if anything is going on. It could be hormones or something like PCOS, ENDO. If you haven’t been checked for those, schedule with your gyno. Dont let them just slap BC ontop of it.

I had the ablation with IUD backup. But talk to your dr. It could lessen your fertility chances. And be safe, I had a stroke after the c0nstant changing of Birth Control. Not sure if the hormonal change was the cause, I was told it didnt help any, but it might not have caused the stroke. Just know the precautions.

Change doctors, get a new opinion and outlook on whats going on

Same thing happened to me, but at 10 years old. I would bleed constantly. No stopping. Finally they were like “it’s endometriosis, here’s some birth control and Premarin”
It worked. Then I stopped taking the birth control and my hormones got all out of whack and now I’m a mess. :unamused: I have 3 beautiful babes though! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
I’m gonna have a hysterectomy in the next few years. I’ve gone to 12 gynecologists and none will do it till I’m 30. Only 4 more years!

Get another IUD wait a year then get pregnant again when you can. After you have the baby have a hysterectomy. Seems like that’s the only thing that’s gonna stop the bleeding.

I’ve had a very similar experience, constant bleeding, very heavy and painful periods. I tried every birth control pill, was tested for blood disorders, and every ultrasound came back with no irregularities. Not even the IUD stopped it. I ended up having a full hysterectomy at 34 yrs old because we couldn’t figure out the cause of it and my family was complete. The pathology report came back without any answers as to why.
I hope you can find some relief.

Birth control is what makes me bleed for months at a time.

There are several causes. Endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, polyps, PCOS, or hormonal imbalance. If you have any of these you may need to go through the motion and then treat the underlying issue after testing for these.

I had once messed up my hormones by taking a BC and missing pills, which caused the withdrawal period, I took primolut in an attempt to stop it and it caused heavier bleeding as opposed to stopping the initial bleeding. I went to my gyny and he gave me a tranexamic acid shot and then I took it in pill form for 10 days. It stopped it and didn’t come back after the pill stopped. I also took Sertrasil Compuesto for the crazy cramps I got.

You need an ablation. I would do that instead of another child

Happened to my mom. She had to get a hysterectomy because it was killing her.

I went through the same thing and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. Ask to see a OB/GYN.

Endometriosis and adenomyosis caused this for me

Same here bled for 2 yrs. They made me have a hysterectomy at 25.

Do not get ablation until you’re done having kids. 2 years is a while yet so I would go back to the IUD if it worked. Went through the same thing, had ablation after being done having kids and it worked.

Be careful. This happened to me when my birth control was taken out. Turns out my body thought I was pregnant for 3 years so my uterus filled up with blood. For 3 years. I almost bled to death. I had to have a full hysterectomy. Thankfully I was done having kids

Ultrasound for an enlarged uterus or fibroids, helped me find what my issue was.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Could be uterine fibroids. I had them. I had an ablasion that helped for awhile, but they came back and I ended up getting a hysterectomy.

IUD until you want another baby

I went through that a long time ago. Finally, 4 doctors later they checked my thyroid and it turns out I have Graves’ disease. I was able to get on medication for it and get back to normal hormone levels and finally my period stopped.

It could be endometriosis. I had heavy bleeding after my 3rd that made me sick. I had to take iron, and wear pads and tampons, still changing them at least every half an hour. They ran every test and couldn’t figure out why. When I realized that we werent able to get pregnant, I decided on an ablation and having my tubes removed because the bleeding was getting worse. During surgery they found endometriosis. I couldn’t use hormonal birth control so I was between a rock and a hard place. That sort of sounds like where you are now. I’d suggest having a baby as soon as possible, then having an ablation. It was one of the best decision I ever made. At most, I only have light spotting now.

The only thing that stopped my 2 periods in one month was the ablation. They done the d&c first snd it worked for a month. The next month I had 2 periods again. They done the ablation in April 2018 and I haven’t had a period since. The dr said there was a 20% chance it wouldn’t stop my periods and then we’d have to do the next step (I wanted full hysterectomy first off but insurance said “take these steps first”). If the ablation works it will stop your periods but you wouldn’t be able to get pregnant again.

you can do an IUD and just have it taken out when you are ready

Yep been there. Had a gazillion tests, explorations like a hysteroscopy (yuck), etc. It happens to me almost each year my body goes out of whack. I usually do a course or progesterone and then estrogen (or maybe the other order sorry) to “reset” my system. Let me add this happened whether or not I’m on bc. Currently have mirena.

I went through this when I had the mirena IUD I bled for a year straight, when the mirena IUD is supposed to make you not have hardly any periods. But in my case it caused me to bleed for a year straight until I got it removed. It didn’t cause my iron to be low but it did cause mild dysplasia on my cervix where it was located at. Maybe go to your obgyn and have them check you, do bloodwork. They may recommend birth control pills to regulate it

Go to lubaga hospital n see those gynaecologist there u hv a hormone problem or something else

Go with hysterectomy, best thing you will do for your self.

When I had this problem the doctor gave me high doses of progesterone birth control for a week and then started a normal dosage of progesterone only birth control and it stopped. My normal cycle came back the following month. When I stopped taking the pill I had one terrible heavy period and then pregnant the next month.

Could be endometriosis. IUD does sometimes makes it worse if it is that. Since you want to have more kids I would have them look into that…also if you’re having any other symptoms, migraines, cramping ect.

I had the same problem my doctor tried everything with me a dnc, ablation, every birth control, and none of it worked I ended up having to get a hysterectomy at 24.

I had the same issue and couldn’t take any birth control and since my uterus was basically tied in a bow, I couldn’t get the ablation done and they had to take out my uterus. But since you want more kids, I don’t think a partial hysterectomy would be the route you want to go. I agree with other women about just doing the IUD again.

The iud is a good option you can remove it when you want so in a year or two if that’s what you want

Sounds like endometriosis

Oh I feel so bad for u…theres got to be a reason for constant bleeding

Had my son when I was 23. Started bleeding rite after having csection lasted 2 yrs non stop. Has fibroids got pregnant at 25 with my daughter bled for 2 yrs had a total hysterectomy at 29

I have fibroids and I do that…
