Hello, I’m wondering if you can ask other moms a question about ear tubes for me. My son is two, almost 3, and got tubes last April. He’s been mostly fine but got an upper respiratory infection about a month ago and got an ear infection. The Dr couldn’t see the tube at the time due to the infection. He was on antibiotics for ten days, then we went on vacation, and his ear started leaking fluid. I took him back to the doctor and said the tube in the ear that leaking had fallen out and put him back on antibiotics. This was about two weeks after the first dose. This past Sunday, he has explosive diarrhea, and the ear that was leaking had blood in it. So I called Dr. Monday, and he had a 102 fever. Dr said to go to her immediately cause she was worried he might have a blood infection. He didn’t thank God, and everything came back normal. He went to his regular Dr (another Dr was one we saw between insurances for cash) today, and they can see his tube. They let me look and see that it is, in fact, still in place. Everything that happened, the leaking of fluid, the blood is coming from the ear, and fever all point to a ruptured eardrum, but it’s not. We’ve been referred to an ENT, and I already have something lined up. But my question is, has anyone seen this before? Is it that serious? I’m scared for my guy. He’s not even three yet And I’m so worried about his hearing. Thank you.

My son had 4 set of tubes before the age of 5 doc said tubes normally fall out after a year and that if ear issues continue they will need to be put back in. At 5 he finally stopped having issues with out tubes
My daughter who is 7 now has had ear tubes in cause she wasn’t passing the hearing test cause she still had fluid from when she was in my womb and while having the tubes in place she would be having fluid coming out but once again that’s what the dr told me that there was possibility of fluid drainage but can be a different story to why ur baby got ear tubes placed
My son had this very issue! His ear leaked yellow fluid, puss and blood for like 2 months before having surgery to remove his tube. Evidently, tubes are temporary. If left in too long, it can cause more harm than good. He has been fine ever since.
As an Audiologist, I can say that having pressure equalization tubes placed in a child’s ear drums are normal when young, and PE tubes can differ from child to child. If a child does not pass a hearing screening or if results on a Tympanogram are abnormal then PE tubes are usually necessary. Some PE tubes fall out on their own after some time, and some stay in place. Never use a Q-Tip to try and clean his/her ears as you can hit or move the tube. If your child is continuing to have any of the symptoms you mentioned, it is absolutely important that you go back to see the child’s ENT physician. If the ear infections, fluid build up, pain/pressure or drainage issues in his or her ears do not resolve it will definitely affect your child’s hearing and that can cause issues with language development. Things to look for are pain, pressure, drainage of any kind (especially blood/pus), fever or report of feeling unwell from your child are signs that they need to be re-evaluated by the ENT physician. As the anatomy of a child’s middle ear system changes, the ear infections don’t occur as frequently, so eventually as your child gets older the problems should stop. PE tubes are so important for that reason.
Personally I think tubes are unnecessary, and antibiotics destroy children’s immune systems. My son had all types of infections and problems as a baby until we got him on homeopathics. Garlic & acidophilus capsules emptied into his formula or baby food strengthened his immunities, and the doctor prescribed homeopathics for anything else. Took about a year to regulate his body and build immunities but he and his younger sister have rarely been sick since and he’s now over 30.
Also was told to put garlic pieces in the ear, with surgical tape to keep them in place overnight for ear infections. I laughed but tried it one time on myself on a Sunday night when nothing was open, my ears were killing me, and it worked. Also worked on my daughter. Instead of giving her the pink amoxicillin prescribed by her (regular, allopathic) doctor, I used garlic cloves cut to fit in her outer ear canal for a week. The doctor rechecked her and said everything had cleared up! The only problem was when she woke up early one morning, picked the garlic out of her ear and chewed on it. I got bowled over when she breathed “hi mommy!”

I know with my grandkids they had to replace them every so often they get blocked
Praying for your precious son’s healing of his ear and his whole body.
I had grommets when i was young, fell out some time after, haven’t had an issue since.
It’s good that they are draining. That’s the purpose of the tubes, so the fluid doesn’t put pressure on the ear drum. Make sure you use ear plugs when he goes in the water.
My son had tubes in three times over the years. They last only about a year each time. He had ear infections with them in too but they really helped. Went from non verbal (not hearing) around 2 yrs old to feeling better and developing
The ENT Doc is your best bet for the issues he’s having. Have faith and trust that all will be well.
He needs to see just an ear specialist not an ENT!!!
No dairy products! Clears up.
my mom said she had to put tubes in my ears when i was a child && they hurt more than they helped. she had nothing but problems with them but i don’t know the specifics.
My daughter had tubes fitted and had the exact same problem for a couple of months. Her hearing is fine now.
Sounds weird but garlic oil helps
In 1972 I had tubes put in both ears due to hearing loss and had no problems, they came out a year later. Only issue I have is scar tissue as the tubes were much larger back then. Also, was not allowed to get any water in my ears until the tubes came out. Not sure if it’s the same these days.
Ive had tubes and grommits when i was a kid, due to my ear canal was almost shut was constant prone to ear infections even when had gromits in, for some gromits work and for some dnt amount of times i went to ENT i should of paid rent there but after late teens early 20s my ear was getting miles better ! And eventually signed me off
My husband has had three sets. He now has permanent stainless steel tubes in both ears. But hearing loss after many surgeries
My middle had an ear infection i kid you not every month for 10 months. Luckily no damage was done we were going back and forth to the ent. Finally she was old enough for surgery. They removed her tonsil adnoids and inserted tubes. Thank god we haven’t had a problem since. Her tonsils were abnormally large abd was the main problem they were blocking her ears from draining properly.
My youngest has tubes. He turns 4 in September. Got them last may (2020).
We were told by ENT if my little one gets an ear infection he needs antibiotic ear drops not oral antibiotics.
He saw ENT a couple months ago and tubes are starting to come out. Which after a certain point they’re supposed to.
I’m going to add. If he’s falling asleep with a bottle or sippy that can and will cause continued ear infections. So you might look at that as well.
It your little has seasonal allergies make sure you’re managing those too.
In our house everyone who gets an ear infection… 9/10 it started from unmanaged allergies (it’s why my oldest and I are on daily antihistamines)
My son had tubes and I now work in the OR and help to place tubes. He had blood coming from his ear at one time and it was just as he grew the smaller tubes were twisting as it was moving prior to falling out and that’s what caused the bleeding. If he had a ruptured ear drum he would be in a whole lot of pain. The ENT should elegy you straightened pretty quick. He may just not be on the right antibiotic as well!
My daughter is 36 now stared having problems at 5 years old tubes in fall out another set of tubes yes we had the drainage problems along with the blood back to the Dr again said everything was ok no cups in the bed at night. When she turned 7 they put in permanent tubes still in there today no more earaches
I had permanent tubes put in my own ears when I was 8. The leaking fluid is normal. I still have it after almost 30 years with them. I bled for a couple of months after the tubes were put in, completely at random. Colds and upper respiratory infections always will lead to leaking out of the ears. It took about 2 to 3 years for me for the tubes to not bleed or cause pain. If your child swims, (it’s hot here in California) make sure to put ear plugs in. Different pressures, water in the ears will cause problems even after the months it takes to heal. After the healing process, no more ear infections. I had had them since infancy. It takes a while for everything to be ok, but trust that once the healing is over with, ear infections will go away.
My son had something similar. His ENT said that his body was rejecting the silicone tubes. ENT put in titanium tubes and it took care of the issues. They fell out on their own when he was 6 or 7. He’s 11 now and has not had any problems with his ears since. Edit to add: my son’s hearing is perfect.
My brother had the same issues for years, constant ear infections and got new ear tubes put in many times. They ended up finding a small tumor in his ear and he got surgery to remove it and ended up having total hearing loss in that ear. He’s 9 now and doing better. Not so many issues with it. He just can’t get water in his ears
First off IMO at his age this never should have been done without a ENT as ALL of my 3 children had these issues several years of tubes in tubes out Tonsils and Adnoids removed ( and I’m talking 2 kids each had 4 sets of tubes and another had 7) When tubes are in tact and leakage/drainage occurs the tube is doing its job and a infection is in the works Mine have had them surgically removed cause infections kept destroying the tubes we ended up with SS “T” Tubes In the end There may be a permanent hole in the ear drum But its either that or hearing loss. delayed speech, educationally behind due to hearing loss all around misery and discomfort from the infections that sometimes go unnoticed without the tubes and by the way yes the negatives did happen anyway to one of mine Hearing loss and educational issues from not being able to hear And I would say the diarrhea was cause by whatever broad spectrum antibiotic they put him on That did nothing since the drainage continued Some blood is normal and the stink uhh gag… It will be fine just take him to the proper medical professional to do the job and care correctly He needs and ENT
The ENT is the doctor to see…
Prayers for your son.
Needs allergy meds everyday.
Yes mama…don’t give up getting him help…hearing loss is a real possibility… keep being his advocate.
Take him back to the doctor.
My kids used to get ear infection and after testing I was told they have a dairy intolerance. I took my kids off cow milk and their infections subsided. I gave them goat milk and almond milk for a bit and then slowly reintroduced cow milk with moderation.
Try a homeopath hepar sulph was given to my child years ago and was very successful. My husband uses it for sinus problems due to surfing.
My grand daughter had ear infections like that and they ended up putting her on an antibiotic that she took once a day for 4 months. They said that the regular antibiotic didn’t work long enough to dry up the fluid in the inner ear. No problems after that.
Our son went deaf due to tubes
Get those adenoids out! They block drainage from going where it needs to go. My son & daughter had the same issues. Adenoids out. No more infections.
My Daughter is 31, her first set at 9 mths, 2nd set 7 months later, they fell out. And so on. By the time she was 7 she had 5 sets of ear tubes. She finally out grew the infection at 7. I will say, we did get her custom ear plugs made for swimming and bath time. That does help. Hang in there, its not easy, but it will get better.
My son has his adenoids taken out at the same time his tubes went in. He was completely deaf in one ear and had 1/2 the normal hearing in his other ear due to fluid buildup. We were warned not to let liquid enter the ear canal until the tubes came out so to lessen the infections. He had some drainage which they said was normal. No fever or anything. Im sorry I don’t have more information for you. Good luck I’ll say a prayer for your little guy.
The biggest issue with tubes is making sure no water gets in the ear. You can have ear plugs made or use moldable plugs, which can be purchased at Walmart or any pharmacy for less than $5. Shower, bath, rain, swimming all can be an issue for the ears.
We’re they t bar grommets the others fall out eventually x if they weren’t ask for a referral and enquire about these
He might have to have his tonsils out, my daughter had repeated ear infections. So sorry y for your little guy
I am 82 have a tube in my ear I had some draining and it’s nothing that I worry about it goes away and it comes and goes as it pleases sometimes you get infections and it will drain other times no infections no temperature and it will still drain so I don’t worry about it
By the way my problem started when I was 10 years old
