Should I be concerned about my childs weight?

My one year old weighs 16.7 pounds, she can still fit into 0-3m onesies and can still fit into 3-6m outfits. Her pediatrician was concerned the first few months (hasn’t said anything since) because her weight is so slow so we had to supplement but I’ve always done that and she EATS. She doesn’t eat full meals like her tummy is so small she likes to eat smaller every 30 minutes or so. I just weaned her from breastmilk but she was mainly on formula but never ate more than 4 ounces, if she did she’d projectile vomit. I took her to a children’s hospital because I thought she had RSV but the pediatrician there was more concerned over her growth chart and weight and was asking a ton of questions. Does anyone seem concerned about it?

My 5 month old is 18.6lbs. With that said, my cousin was a really small baby and toddler. I specifically remember her only being around 20lbs at 2 years old. She grew up just fine. She just had a super fast metabolism.

My 5 year old has a high metabolism and he only weighs 40 lbs. Doctor is not concerned because he’s pretty healthy otherwise :woman_shrugging:t2:

At one which their milk to whole and see if it will help

As long as she’s still trending upward I wouldn’t be too worried. My son was only 19 pounds at a year old. He was always on the bottom 5 %.

While I wouldn’t stress myself over it I would talk to pediatrician about it and see if testing to make sure she’s properly absorbing nutrients is needed. My youngest started out at 9lbs14oz and now at 13 only weights approximately 67lbs. His pediatrician is monitoring his weight but not excessively concerned. We have medication on hand for if he has a serious dip in appetite to encourage eating but he eats like yours small but frequently. As long as they are eating and you are making sure it’s nutrient rich foods she’s likely just fine.

That is pretty small my 5 month old weighs more than her

Babies are all different. But I think it’s worth looking into with a specialist. Better to check any possibility of something you could help her with. Or she maybe just be small and a light eater. If all her testing is ok then no harm done.

As long as she’s otherwise healthy, I wouldn’t worry too much. She might just be a petite girl. I only weighed 18 pounds at 1 year old and was healthy other than a slight heart murmur that I eventually outgrew. I am almost 47 and still petite at only 4’ 10". Both of my children are taller than me at 14 and 15.

Perfectly fine  just as long as she’s eating and getting the nutrients in! This child is now 7 and weighs like 35 lbs. Healthy as can be though :woman_shrugging: my 13 year old weighs like 75 lbs. They eat just fine. Just as long as the weights is increasing I wouldn’t worry. If it stops or decreases then I would worry!!

I think all children are different.

My daughter will be 5 in August. She’s 32lbs

My daughters were 17 and 19 lbs at their 2yr wellchecks…I dont think that’s too small. The pediatricians main concern is that they’re consistently gaining, even if it’s slow, AND meeting milestones. Otherwise some kids are big, some small.

My daughter was only 17lbs at 1 and was still 17lbs at 18 months. She’s now 10 and only 50lbs she’s perfectly healthy just a tiny kid.

All 3 of my kids are small, my 2 youngest eat all day long but still small. My oldest is very picky but snacks all day. My doctor always told me any increase of weight is a win.

It seems small to me but I am not a doctor. My 2 year old is 23lbs. Her ped is more concerned about consistent weight gain than the actual number. Her weight gain slowed down and I was advised to add more healthy fats to her diet and the goal is one good meal every couple days. Some days she eats like a bird other days I seriously wonder where she puts all fat food.

I would seek the help of a paediatric nutritionist/specialist. That is very small for her age. My kids weighed that around 5 months old. If she’s eating good it could have to do with an absorption issue of some kind.

Is it time to panic? No.
However, to me it sounds like it’s a concern worth looking into just to be sure there’s nothing else going on.

My 2 month old weighs 14 pounds 10 oz…

My daughter at 1yr, weighed 16#15oz but she did wear 1 yr old clothes. She always wore her age. Perfectly healthy then and still is now many years later. I do not see how a child that size could wear 3 months size clothes

I wouldn’t be worried at all. As ling as she is eating and gaining slowly, and healthy that’s what matters. Most doctors want kids to blow up from cows milk which humans shouldn’t do.

This is a conversation for your childs pediatrician

My girl weighs 19.4 pounds but eats non-stop. My Mother was always very tiny and short. My girl is 15.5 months old and her top teeth are visible through her gums but haven’t come down yet. She eats so many things with no teeth. Be patient Momma!

Depends on birth weight. A baby should be close to 3x the birth weight by 1 yr of age. Lack of growth could indicate a concern with several things including a heart condition or metabolic disorder or even an abnormal structural defect. If your ped has not been proactive in ruling out potential causes I would immediately be switching to another doctor, because not to scare you but if it isn’t documented that you have raised concern about this and you take your baby in for something and it’s not and the nurse or medical provider reports to cps for a neglect concern then unfortunately you have to be investigated. It happens everyday…

U probably should be discussing this with the pediatrician and not fb🥴 if ur not happy with the pediatrician then get a new one…

Get a second opinion from another pediatrician… just to set your mind at ease.

I have a 4 month old. She’s around 15lbs already. BUT. She has tiny cousins. One only 25lbs & 2.5 years old. And they’re all healthy happy littles. I think as long as she’s slowly increasing, it’s fine. But I’m also not a doctor, get a second opinion if you want peace of mind. Just remember, every baby is different mama.

My one year one boy weighed 28 pounds at 1 an just had his 2 year check up and weighed 34 pounds each kid is different but if it eased your mind I would bring it up again or get a second opinion!

My daughter was also only around 16 pounds at 1 year. They did a lot of tests to see if she had any aliments that would cause slow growth. All were negative. She’s been healthy her whole life and now is 21.

Every baby is different. My first two boys were both 19lbs at 1 year old and reached all milestones very early. My third boy was 18.5lbs at 6 months. He is 7 1/2 months now and not sitting independently or crawling yet. But they are all happy and healthy.

how much did she weigh at birth? i’ve always been told that babies typically triple their birth weight by a year old. It seemed pretty right with all 4 of mine. My son was only 4 pounds 15ounces at birth and only about 15 or 16 pounds at a year. I think your baby is fine. Also if she wasn’t growing right i would think her regular pediatrician would look into it.

My 7 month weighs 14.8, .98 percentile. The ped wants to do blood tests etc. He just started pureees, he does really well! He eats a lot. Doesn’t drink a lot of milk. My sister tells me as long as they are growing length and head circumference wise, weight will come.

Mum of a slow grower here, my 2.5yr at last weigh in was only 8.86kg we supplement with callogen in 3x 210ml bottles a day and he is also what I like to call a graizer. I’m pretty tiny myself and my son also has kidney disease and a thyroid issue, however I’m not concerned because he’s not losing any weight.

My daughter was 15 lbs at 1

My almost 9 month old is only 14.5 lbs. and the ped no longer says anything about the growth chart

I would say that’s a concern

I’d be concerned. More about the vomiting n the clothes size. Maybe she has growth issue n needs supplementing or has an issue with certain foods. Iv always had giant children at the top percentile n I’ve seen small children but normally they still eat a large amount n just metabolize it faster. 4 Oz is nothing n I’m disturbed ur pediatrician dropped the ball on that seems u got lost in the system but the ER dr knows this is not a typical one year old intake. Please seek another pediatrician

The only thing that concerned me about your post was the projectile vomiting, that is something that needs to be evaluated by a specialist. Otherwise I have a almost 7 year old who’s only 40 lbs, doctor is not concerned because she’s always been small

My son has just had his 2 Month check up he’s 16 lbs.

Is your child falling off their curve? Thats what matters. If they are staying on their curve it’s not to be worried about.
Once they go off their curve than you worry. My son was 17 pounds at 12 months. He was considered failure to thrive but that’s because he was off his curve and below 5% in height and weight.
If your worried see a nutritionist

the rule is by 6 months they should double their birth wt & by a yr they should have tripled their birth wt. When my daughter was born she was 6 lbs 3 oz, Back then (she will be 53 in 3 months) we fed our babies baby food, started with oatmeal, then apple sauce, etc. She was never a chubby baby, but did the proper wt gain & the Pedi Dr would almost yell at me every month, because she wasn’t a chubby baby & I told him, but she does gain the 2 lbs every months & is a very healthy & never sick baby, I got rid of him after a yr, If th ePedi Dr has no problem, let it be, especially if she is healthy, Every baby is different. When I started kindergarten I was only 39 lbs & 1 st grade I was 41 lbs, I made up for that when I was in 6 grade & got back to a normal wt in 7 th grade, Everyone is different
