Should I be concerned if my baby swallowed coins?

If your 3 year old had coins and you couldn’t find some and asked her if she ate any and she said yes and is now saying no and you have no way to the hospital other then the ems and wouldn’t have a ride home would you take her in to be safe or believe that she didn’t?

I would give your pediatricians office a call- if they are closed, I’d just call the after hours line they provide to see what they think. If no response, you can always call the hospitals emergency department and ask to speak to a nurse

What coins(nickel, dime, etc) were they and how many?

I would pay attention to her going poop. If she stops going. Then definitely take her in.

My son swallowed something he knew better not to. I was told he will pass it. If not passed within a few days. To bring him back.

If she swallowed pennies i would take her in. If not i would keep an eye on her stool.

My 3 year old swallowed a dime just over a month ago. From what I have been told emerge won’t do anything unless it’s blocking their air way. Just keep an eye for the little to poop it out.

Call the nurse’s hotline. 9/10 they pass it.

Unless she is choaking I don’t see the point in taking her to hospital they will most likely tell you she will just poop it out and she will.

My niece did an it was stuck in her throat a had to have surgery

Better take her in that can kill her

Worked at a pediatrician’s office. She should have an x-ray to make sure it’s where it’s supposed to be and she will pass them. Sometimes (but rarely) it may need to be removed.

My son was 3 came to me told me he swolled a penny. I hesitated on taking him in but did anyway. They did an x ray and he swolled a quarter. They transfered us to Children’s Hospital where they did nothing but say hell poop it out.

Uber to the hospital and Uber back ? That could be serious if it ended up somewhere it shouldn’t be.

They could get lodged or stuck I’d take her for precaution

Honestly depends on what kind of coin, my youngest sister got 2 quarters lodged in her throat as a toddler, had enough space to still breathe but couldn’t swallow anything, they had to be surgically removed. I would at least go for an x-ray. Call some friends and see if anyone would be willing to get your guys back home? Uber?

If you can get an X-ray coins show up really well. If she is swallowing and pooping normally it’ll (literally) all come out in the end and there’s nothing to worry about. If not, the coins could cause an intestinal blockage.

Call your pediatrician. If they’re closed call the ER

How the old man in grumpy old men worry if she swallowed a quarter and poops 2 dimes and a nickle

Gotta love it, if child breathing ok, and acting ok probably will just pass through stool, however good idea to ask pediatrician as precaution

Good grief, I wouldn’t risk anything with my children, I’d already be at the hospital and not asking on internet what to do.
People lack common sense these days!

Call first see if there is any other form of transporting they offer. Because yes the child needs a x ray to see if any is still in and on the right path to out

My daughter at 4 swallowed a nickel it had to be surgical removed!

Best of luck, please keep us updated!

I personally would take her just to be safe… I worked in a hospital n they will give you a voucher for a cab ride…

Depends on size of coin. My grandson swallowed a penny they prayed to see location and said not to worry it will pass

Uh, duh. Make sure your kids ok before you worry about “having a ride home” like come on!

wtf yes. Take him to the emergency room now. Tf

How is she acting? If she’s acting fine, can swallow etc I wouldn’t be overly worried. But I would call the pediatrician just to touch base and see if they say the same. I know of a few kiddos who have swallowed coins and pooped them out later.

My son did this, unless it’s obstructing their airway you will just have to wait for them to poop them out

Don’t risk anything when it comes to your child! Take the child to be checked out, an X-ray will determine if it is still inside. And please don’t listen to folk saying it will pass… you don’t want an emergency surgery to have it removed, coming from a mother who has had this experience. :two_hearts:

I swallowed a pound coin when I was a child, nothing happened but I was quite sick (vomiting) for a few days after. Probably with the amount of bacteria on it :nauseated_face:xx

Take her in just to be sure and get an x ray.

Watch stools for a while if she don’t pass any id go to get X-rays. Just make sure she is breathing and acting okay and can swallow foods

She needs to be checked by a doctor- what’s wrong with you, it could get caught in her intestines or rip her booty. That’s not even thinking it has all that bacteria on it. Why would you allow your child to play with coins or anything else small like that. WTF are you thinking - get medical attention immediately

If it was my child I would take them to the hospital just to be safe I’d rather walk home than risk anything bad happening

We went to urgent care so they could x-ray and track the coin. If he did not poop it out in 24 hrs we would have to go back for another x-ray to track it. He pooped it out within 24hrs.

Check her :poop: … I swallowed one when I was and they told parents just to look and make sure it came out… but I’d still call her doctor

My son when he was a baby swolled a penny, was lodged in his throat, enough he could breathe but had to have it surgically removed also

I wouldn’t risk anything I’d go in. As people said an x ray will probably be needed. Even if she seems OK I’d be worried they’d gone some where that they could dislodge from and cause serious injury

Why would you let your 3 year old have coins at all, let alone unsupervised?

My son swallowed a nickel. They said if he were breathing fine and could eat and drink he didn’t need to come in.

Go however you can get there to the hospital. Now.

If your child is behaving normally; just call the pediatrician or primary care doctor. Most of the time, the coins will pass through their digestive system within 1-2 weeks. If your child vomits even just once since item was suspected as swallowed, take to the ER immediately. Fever, troubles breathing, troubles swallowing, stomach pains, etc. take to the ER.

I would find a way to seek medical attention
For your little one

Never ask a small child if they swallowed something- just ask if they know where it is. Make it a game - where’s it hiding? See answer below :point_down:t2:

my oldest swallowed a quarter when she was 7. they xrayed her and said it would passed.
when we asked her why she said she wanted to see what would happen

Uber is also an option. Most hospitals when you go in to see them if you don’t have a ride, they will give you a voucher to pay for a ride home.

Not worth my kid, I would take to an ER

Yes. You don’t know where it ends up in the body.

What kind of question is this ?! Call EMS and have your child checked out !!! It could become lodged in her throat , who lets children that age have change ???

My brother swallowed a coin. We had him poop in a potty and eventually the coin came out

I swallowed a quarter as a child and they booked me in for an X ray to locate the quarter (at the time I was young enough it could’ve caused an obstruction), they found it before the stomach and decided it was necessary to remove it. I was booked in for a quick removal process where I was put to sleep and they put a tube down my throat to grab it - but it already passed! I eventually pooped it out not long after. Regardless what happens, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If she’s swallowed the coins, an X ray can tell where and if it’s necessary to intervene - even if it moves itself before the surgery date lol. :poop:

Bring her for an X-ray asap. The coin can get lodged anywhere on the way throw. Do not risk the wait and see approach
Also it can damage her when coming out if she passes it

What size are the coins? They’ll probably pass. Keep an eye out for them.

It’s happened. You’ll find it in a couple days
