The doctor told me I had too much fluid around the baby: Advice?

The gestational diabetes is worrisome. The high blood sugars can go right to the baby and cause them to put on weight in utero resulting in a very large baby being born. I would get a second opinion on all of it, including the possibility of c-section birth and being induced before your due date.

I had gestational diabetes with my daughter and had loads of fluid! My midwife and doctors told me it was normal with GD. She’s now 21 months and healthy and happy! Neither of us have diabetes now

When my mom was pregnant with me, I swallowed ammonitic fluid. In my case, I did eventually get a autism dx but it wasn’t because of the birth complication where I wasn’t breathing when born, so it is not connected. Do not worry

I had so much fluid they had to keep coming in and “draining” me for hours after I gave birth. Today my son is 8 years old and just fine. My boss’s daughter in law had too much fluid as well and she gave birth to a happy, healthy little girl about 4 months ago.

With my third child I had extra fluid she came out 9.14 and perfectly normal.

My son had fluid around his neck and my diabetes was not great hes almost 2 and healthy

I am type 1 diabetic and had a lot of fluid with my second child (born 4/12/21). I was measuring up 9cm(?) Of fluid towards the end. My baby is perfectly healthy and was 7lbs 11oz at birth. I had all of the pre-screening tests, except the amniocentesis, during pregnancy and they all came good. The biggest risk of too much fluid, according to my doctor, was if my water breaks then the umbilical cord could come out due to the water pressure, which would be a serious risk. I ended up having a scheduled csection a week before my due date anyways.

Get a second opinion! Down syndrome is diagnosed with a genetic test via amniocentesis if it is suspected. Autism is never diagnosed in utero! It is diagnosed after certain milestones are not met…

When I was 36 weeks pregnant they told me the same thing. My son is now turning 5 in 4 days and is perfect in every way. They tried to drain fluid off me but couldn’t get any and we did an emergency cesarean a week later. He weighed 7 1/2 lbs

I was told I had too much fluid, they told me to go swimming. I did. My son was born 7 days late and I had ALL the tests done because there were issues on his side of the gene pool. MY son will be 21 in August and is perfectly normal.

I was gonna say, at 13 wks (I’m 14wks tomorrow), they do a Down syndrome test. I just had mine done. They didn’t do one at 13 wks in this situation? It’s incredibly routine so I would be surprised if it wasn’t done

I had this with my third. No autism or anything but I was induced to make sure the cord didn’t slip out before baby

Downs Syndrome is tested with a quad screen in your 2nd trimester. If you had limited prenatal care, or had declined this optional AFP test, that could be a reason why your doctor mentioned that.
But polyhydramnios is not only caused by Downs. It is, however, an indication for early induction of labor. It CAN be caused by uncontrolled GDM (gestational diabetes), but yours seems fairly controlled with insulin. I will say that GDM is a common cause of polyhydramnios. Other common causes are fetal anomalies and infections. Some causes are unknown, and would therefore be an indication to send the placenta to pathology after delivery. Your doctor does not seem to work with high risk cases like we do daily. Your baby may very well end up fine. I recommend early induction.

My children are in their twenties back in the 90s they did a test of the amniotic fluid as part of routine pregnancy check-up. Do they not do that anymore? Or can’t that be done in this situation?

I had too much water towards the end of my twin pregnancy around baby A, it was fine.

Had extra fluid also, did have sporadic bleeding at about 10 weeks, thinkin I was havin a miscarriage. After my son was born healthy (6 lb 11 oz) they said i might have been pregnant with twins in the begining.

I would suggest that you walk away from this doctor and find a different one. He has all the sensitivity of a refrigerator.

Every BODY is different- if ur doc didn’t go over risks with, and ur baby was born w those needs, God forbid, u may be on here asking why your doc didn’t warn u… :woman_shrugging:t3: get a second opinion. It’s your body. IMO- medicine is a practice not an exact science. Good luck

Get a second opinion from a qualified medical specialist. Asking random people on FB is not helpful.

Autism can not be diagnosed before birth, you need a different doctor

I had my kid forty years ago. I was a 10lb.8oz baby. They said I was having a big ole boy! She was 6.8 and low birth weight due to me smoking…
It may be fine.

Go get a second opinion. I would change doctors.

You do know. Most of us on social media are not Dr’s. Listen to y our Dr.

OMG…How stressful for you…Pleade seek a second opinion.

When I had a sonogram for my second son the technician said there were “some abnormalities” and possibility of “water on the brain”. He was born without any problems and perfectly healthy. Do not fret about it.

Did your doctor really say autism? If so, change you doctor.

I had to high of levels too. You’ll be ok, they’ll just monitor you closer.

Had too much fluid and kids are fine

In my opinion … get a new doctor asap… not only for the health of your baby but your own peace of mind

This is ridiculous! I’d check this Dr’s credentials immediately!

Natasha Robinson these aren’t real questions…they’re like a newspaper agony aunt…

I was told I had a lot of amniotic fluid, and that if my water broke, It could make quite the splash! That’s it!:woman_shrugging:t2:

I had gestational diabetes with my daughter and had loads of fluid! My midwife and doctors told me it was normal with GD. She’s now 21 months and healthy and happy! Neither of us have diabetes now

Praying for a perfect baby.

I had a lot of extra fluid around my baby. I was afraid too. They monitored me 3 times a week from 34 weeks on and when they broke my water I thought it would never stop but she came out 100% fine and she is 3 now, healthy, happy and thriving:heart: You and baby will be just fine, extra fluid does not always mean the worst, sometimes there just is not a reason why it happens.:pray::pray::pray:

I had polyhydromnios. It’s where there is too much amniotic fluid. It’s more dangerous than I thought it was at the time. Baby came out perfect! She was early at 36 weeks, tiny, but perfect!

I had extra fluid when i was pregnant with my son and everything was ok.

Well, I’m not the bringer of good news. I had Polyhydraminos with my 4 youngest boys. They ALL have Autism AND ADHD. They have other individual diagnoses on top of those two. I had significant increased risk for DS at my Ultrascreens with the two middle boys. The one with the highest increased risk is actually our “gifted and talented” son with Autism and highest functioning now. The other boy with a lower increased risk… is actually our lowest functioning son with Autism Level 2 with Intellectual Disability, Epilepsy, severe developmental delays in all domains. He has a lot of diagnoses. Our highest functioning son, while he does have Autism and ADHD, was the most excessive amniotic fluid out of 5 biological boys! I measured full term at only 19 weeks along!!! I had so much fluid, I gained 70lbs and practically had to wear parachutes. LOL! I was always being asked if I was having twins or triplets! 28 weeks…

O yes mam I had high fluid with all 3 pregnancies. However with my second one I was told he has a water head, and possibly downs.
Went to specialist all 40 weeks. My baby boy was born NOTHING wrong with him my fluids were high but nothing with my baby. He’s now a healthy 9 year old

They told me down syndrome bc of an echocardiogram but then said all testing came back normal. I think they educate you based off of studies and knowledge but they don’t actually know. It’s impossible too know.

Me!! Had to much fluid. Had bubs at 36w1d and he is fine. Now nearly 2

I had polyhydroaminos with both of my pregnancies and both my babies were born at 39 weeks via c section but were healthy. The biggest concerns are pre term labor and prolapsed cord during delivery.

Had to much with my youngest and she’s perfectly healthy. She is being tested for SPD & ADHD but that’s it.

I too had polyhydramnios which resulted in prolapsed cord and had an emergency c section. Although she was born healthy (went straight to NICU) she unfortunately has been diagnosed with ADHD, Affective Mood Disorder then DMDD which then turned into bipolar. I was high risk during pregnancy due to my hypothyroidism and had SEVERAL ultrasounds, every single technician and dr commented about the amount of fluid but never once said anything about possible outcomes.

I had extra fluid with my son my 2nd pregnancy but not a lot to have to doctors concerned. He was breech and with the extra fluid I had a scheduled c-section.

I had polyhydramios and was in the 99th percentile for fluid when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was having preterm labor at 18 weeks and started bedrest at 34 wks. However, She came out perfectly healthy. She is so smart and sweet. Nothing wrong with her at all. I also did an essay on polyhydramnios in nursing school. There are multiple things that can cause it. Sometimes they know what the cause is and other times they don’t. If you’re really concerned, they can do ultrasounds that looks for Down syndrome indicators.

Polyhydromnios is an effect of diabetes. I had both with my daughter.

I was told the same thing at about 30 or 32 weeks! They just wanted to do ultrasounds every every week to see if it went down or up. I had my daughter at 38 weeks she is perfectly healthy has never been sick a day in her 2 years of life and is smart as all get out does everything early or at a higher level then most kids her age. I was so swollen my entire pregnancy starting at 8 weeks and going to 3 weeks after I had her they said I was on the verge of having preeclampsia bc my BP stayed elevated to. She also had a cyst on her brain early on in my pregnancy (I have been told it is common) it dissolved!

No way to determine Autism prior to birth .

I have 3 sons who are adults now%

I was determined to be polyhydramus (extra fluid in placenta) with my last child at 33 weeks they scared me by saying the same things and the danger of the cord wrapping around her neck. My daughter came out perfectly healthy at 7 lbs 15oz yes the cord wrapped around her (under her one shoulder and over the other) luckily I had all C-sections so that was no big deal. For ur doctor to only tell u certain things is just ridiculous. Polyhydramia can be caused by so many things. The doctors couldn’t tell me a cause but I believe to this day it was my bodies way to protect her (abusive ex who didn’t want her). Stay strong, put yourself on minimal activity and even bedrest if ur doctor hasn’t and remember any stress u have the baby has as well

This was me at 38 weeks the night before I went in to be induced with ONE baby. I also had polyhydromnios. The birth process is the part you have to worry about most. I had a second IV put in in case they had to do a blood transfusion which they almost had to do. I lost so much blood, I was experiencing the symptoms of dying from blood loss while I was on the OR table. My husband said it was frightening. Other than that, my daughter is two and doing great!

With my third child I was diagnosed as polyhydramnios, they told me it was generally found in women who had gestational diabetes (never had) or there was a complication with the baby (also no problem), and although rarely sometimes it just happens.

I had to be induced at 38 weeks for fear of my water breaking because it could potentially cause a prolapsed umbilical cord from the extra fluid.

Over all, if all your growth scans ect have been fine thus far, I wouldn’t worry about there being any problems, sometimes this just happens.

Wishing you the best!

Please don’t listen to anecdotal information from people on the internet. Ask to be referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine. This is the high risk doctors that specialize in fetal medicine. They will look at all the factors and give you specific risks to your situation. But until the baby is actually born and can be directly tested there is no way to know exactly what’s going on. Autism may take years to diagnose. The only definitive test done for down syndrome in pregnancy is the amniocentesis. I’m sorry that there is no definitive answers and worry and wait it’s the only option for now. Get a professional consultation to get all the information you can.

This is news. I had gestational diabetes with my 1st three of 5 kids…first two kids had autism and fluid was never an issue or indicator of anything. As far as ik some mamas just had more than others. My fluids were super low at those points

My sister recently had a baby they told her in the last month the baby’s legs was too small an could be down syndrome making her worry out her mind as if having pregnancy diabetes wasn’t enough, although it was her 5th child they brought her in 2 weeks early induced her an the child was perfectly healthy an should of been left to go full term come when he was ready

All children are born perfect!!! Autism and downs are not “UN fine” they are still perfect… Born just the way they were meant to be…

I had extra fluid too with every pregnancy. They were worried about complications but both kids were fine. I am obese and carry fluid so they think it had to do with that.

They told me the same thing with my second child. They said that baby might not be able to stay head down because of the fluids! I did end up with an C-section because her heart beat was dropping. I did soak the whole hospital bed and was still leaking  I was 40weeks+2days weighing 7lbs 12.4oz and was induced. Everything turned out just fine! Try not to stress!

I have type one diabetes. It’s very common for women with diabetes to have polyhydramnios and bigger babies. Have you been seeing an endocrinologist throughout your pregnancy? No matter how well you keep your blood sugars this happens.

I had GD and a TON of fluid. My kid came out fine. Sugar was a little low, but otherwise fine. Pretty sure there’s no evidence that says if you have a lot of fluid your kid will have downs or be autistic, that’s just kinda weird they would say that.

I had gestational diabetes plus 3x the “regular” amount of fluid they scheduled my c section 2 weeks before my due date, my water broke the morning before and she was healthy but big lol

I have type 1 diabetic and just had my 2nd baby 8 weeks ago. I was huge at the end of my pregnancy my uterus measured 42 weeks at 37 weeks gestation. It normal to have alot of fluid if you have diabetes during pregnancy. My baby was born at 37 weeks perfectly healthy just large.

I had excess amniotic fluid during my last pregnancy. My daughter was born full term, perfectly healthy. She is now 5 and far too smart for her own good (or mine lol).

I literally just gave birth to my son and I had polyhydramnios from 6 months until 9 months . And everything was fine most of the time the extra fluid can be caused from nothing . And diabetes is also a cause of high fluid but that doesn’t mean your child has autism. If you already have diabetes it could definitely be your reason why . But don’t worry too much because your fluid levels can go up and down . My levels went from 29 cm to 21 cm than went to 17 and 15 and right near the end of my pregnancy it went to 11cm so I was out of high risk levels and didn’t need to go see my doctor cause I was getting induced a week later anyways . But don’t stress until your little one is here and they can properly make sure everything is ok. :pray:t2::two_hearts:

I gained no weight but had a ridiculous amount of fluid. Baby was born 100 % healthy, happy, and no abnormalities!

Seek another opinion if it helps
Calm you. I wouldn’t worry too much.

Did any one read that the baby was born & completely fine?

Why would you be using fb to get medical advice? See an endocrinologist

I had a similar experience. Both my babies are healthy. Prayers for a safe delivery :pray:t6:

My sister had this any my niece has no developmental problems whatsoever!

I think I should get another doctor, this ones scary :worried:

Go to KEMH as soon as possible to have it all checked

I had Polyhydramnios with my 3rd. She was/is perfectly healthy.

If you are happy with the Dr.'s diagnosis then seek a second opinion. Social media is not the place to seek advice for something so, concerning. I wish you and your baby absolute health

Autism would have nothing to do with the fluid!

Prayers for you and your baby

I had waaay too much fluid with my third child, the drs constantly told me I would need a c section, I had high blood pressure towards the end and they actually tried admitting me at a couple of appointments because of it. I refused as I felt fine. When it came closer to due date my water never broke, and baby was breech still, just swimming along. They offered me C sections repeatedly, I refused each time as I felt fine. When it came time to deliver I was induced and baby came out healthy and no health issues whatsoever. I had him naturally, They did have to break my water though, He turns 2 in a month and I haven’t had any concerns his whole life. Your best bet is to just go with your intuition, Every pregnancy is different. I am only 21 as well, it’s definitely different for each woman.
