I’m currently 36 weeks 6 days pregnant with my third baby… I went to the doctor Friday they told me I have too much fluid around the baby… I went again today, and they told me the baby might have autism or downs that can be causing it… I might also add I have gestational diabetes that runs between 130 to 72 with insulin help… But the doctor is telling me my sugars cant be the cause of the high fluids… I’m wondering if any other moms have been told this, and the baby ended up being completely fine.
I had my baby 5 weeks ago and I was told she had to much fluid I even got tested for GD because they said that could be the cause I didn’t have it though but she was born absolutely fine, I just flooded the floor twice when my waters broke because there was genuinely Alot of fluid the only thing they was concerned about with me was that the cord could come first but that didn’t happen either. I had a lovely all natural labour
I had two kids that are now 3 and 5 and had too much fluid with them and was tested for GD a lot with both pregnancies. They never figured out why I had so much fluid but both kids are healthy, no problems!

I had too much fluid with all 3 of my pregnancies.
The doctor who delivered my first said she’s never seen so much fluid. She’s been delivering babies for 20 years…
my water broke first, and I gushed, lots, for 36 hours. And she broke my water twice. It was almost too much!
I also had GD, but didn’t need insulin.
Perfectly healthy baby girl.
They told me my daughter was going be downs baby cuz of her size her postion n others she came out good i was also sick thru out my whole pg n i only gain 6lbs instead of gaining i was losing until last wk of having her
I didn’t know that was possible! I had virtually none. Which was a major issue of course.
I had too much fluid with 2 of my 4. They both turned out perfectly fine. Everyone around me just enjoyed an extra shower that day!
My fluid levels were really high with my second child. I had a c-section at a little over 37 weeks because my levels kept going up and they didn’t know why. They did several ultrasounds to check her kidneys, but she always looked ok. She spent a night in the NICU because she had a little trouble breathing when she was born, but she’s a perfectly healthy 3 year old now.
My best friend had a lot of extra fluid with her last, she was a big baby and over a yr old now, no downs and no autism as of yet
I had a lot of fluid with my 3 rd and gestational diabetes with my 2nd and 3rd, was in insulin and would go between my regular obgyn and maternal fetal medicine and they said it was caused by the gestational diabetes. All children were born and are still healthy.
Yes, inwS told that in my third pregnancy, my son is fine and then 25 yrs old on the 6th of June
I had a lot of water with my son. Minus having to have a csection everything was fine.
I had a lot extra with my 5th child. He ended up having a rare genetic disorder called Noonan Syndrome Sos1
With my last pregnancy towards the end I had extra fluid. They said it sometimes happens. When they broke my water it was a lot, the doctor was sitting on the edge of the bed and the side
Of him got wet it was really a lot
I had a lot of fluid with my son my doctor wasnt concerned just told me that was why i felt so full, heavy/bloated my baby is fine i would consider getting a second professional opinion if you are worried though
I had the exact same situation, was scared out of my mind for 5 months of pregnancy. He was born 3 days before his due date, perfect weight, and perfectly healthy.
Unless you had an amniocentesis don’t believe anything they tell you. They are purely guessing. I had a high risk pregnancy and they told me there is a possibility my baby could have trisomy 18 and the genetic testing came back fine. She does have some birth defects they still can’t figure out how because believe it or not they know enough or have the technology. I was induced 2 weeks early. Don’t sweat it to much though.
I had a lot of fluid with my oldest. But I didn’t know until my OB broke my water for delivery. My baby girl was perfect.
With both my babies, the doctors (one in TX, one in MO) said they had never seen that much water when they broke my bag of waters… my girls were fine.
I had high fluids with mine but was just told he probably peed a lot. Everything else was pretty normal for me. I hope it’s as simple as this and isn’t anything serious.
either way it’s a beautiful baby I’m sure
Im 29 weeks and they just told me i had alot of fluid in my belly and I have gd
What!?! Autism is not something that would indicate that and you don’t know if autism is present for YEARS.
Yes I had this with my last. In the last few weeks the extra fluid caused me a lot of false labor. They also told me he was going to be a big baby over 10lbs and come early. Ended up he was a week late, they had to break my water and he was 8.5lbs. He swallowed some amniotic fluid on the way out and had to spend another night in the hospital, otherwise everything was fine.
I had alot of fluid. My water broke at 36 weeks. He was born happy and healthy. Hes 5 now and perfectly fine. They had me terrified at the doctors office when they told me about it though.
2 of my babies had a lot of fluid and neither of them have autism.
I had a ton of extra fluid but had a healthy baby boy (19yrs ago) I was super worried at the time. I suggest listening and take any precautions (I had a stress test and untra sound every couple of days) and only deal with things that are absolute. Worry doesn’t do baby or mom any good.
Only reason I feel like it’s a little crazy to tell if the baby has autism or any learning disability (mental wise) by fluid is because my oldest has autism and my pregnancy was perfectly normal, fluids and all. You can’t tell what mentally is wrong with your child unless is visible in their brain scans or you have the blood work done…
Im 39 almost 40 weeks with my third (one and only boy) they have me on weekly ultrasounds and non street tests. They are talking about possible induction on Tuesday, I have an appointment Monday to find out forsure if they are going to induce tuesday
I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios and my son was born with a diaphragmatic hernia that had been undetected.
I had polyhydramnios and my son has Down syndrome BUT the fluid increase happened MUCH sooner than nearly 37 weeks and the reason (a defect in his intestines) was visible on ultrasound at 27 weeks. To give you an idea of how much extra fluid I had, I measured full term at 27 weeks. I went into labor at 31 weeks because my body couldn’t hold the fluid anymore. I wouldn’t worry about it since you don’t have any other markers. Everyone I know who had polyhydramnios with a baby with Down syndrome had visible intestinal or esophageal defects.
I had lots of fluids and all three of my kids were perfect born healthy and still are. 9, 6 and 2
With my third they checked me twice for twins. Then said at 29 weeks they estimated her birth weight at 40 weeks to be 12lbs. Well she was born on her due date, when my water broke it literally flooded the room. She was a healthy 7lbs 1oz. No issues at all. She just turned 13.
Your sugars can be the cause and there are many other things that can cause it and it can also just be nothing. I had my daughter a year ago and had 4 times the normal amount of fluid.
I had too much fluid… they never told me the baby had downs or autism, but I delivered the next day and he is a perfectly healthy 3 year old!
I had gs with my youngest and to much water. She was born at 38 weeks perfectly fine
I have a lot of fluid, and my daughter had gastroschisis. My daughters abdomen wall formed around her intestines. She has surgery right after she was born and has been fine. I was told that extra amniotic fluid is usually a sign of a birth defect.
Your doctor is an idiot. Gestational diabetes can cause excess fluid. I have 4 babies that I had gestational diabetes with. My smallest was 9lbs 2oz. My youngest was breech then flipped last minute. Thankfully I had excess fluid because I had her at 36 weeks and she weighed 9lbs 10oz.
I had gestational diabetes with my son, I also had too much fluid. He was 11.5lbs at birth. I had a c-section at 37 weeks. He is perfectly fine. Although he is now 10 and wears a size 11 shoe in mens
Good luck💜
No matter what is causing it you will love him or her. So Don’t stress about it until you really have to.
When my mom was pregnant with my brother, she was so huge they honestly thought there was a hidden twin, because of how big she was.despite all sonograms sayings only 1 baby. When she went into labor, they had to break her water 3 times because there was so much and she just kept closing back up and wasn’t draining fast enough.
I had a lot of fluid around my baby with gestational diabetes and delivered at 37 weeks and 6 days and she was completely fine but did weigh over 9lbs. I never had to take insulin though just a pill for it.
I’m pregnant with my second and not due until July 9th. I been having to see a specialist bc my son has a fluid sack at his nucifold measuring 7.6cm which they said should be around 5cm or less and it’s a sign of down sym… they did a NIPT and it came back ok… he also has one at his heart now… but yesterday they told me I had 25. Something in fluid now and I’m measuring a week ahead. I’ll be 35 weeks tomorrow but measuring 36 weeks. They said it could be a sign of down considering his nucifold is showing same signs but his nucifold could just be fat too. Hopefully your baby is ok… I wouldn’t worry too much if your baby is moving around and kicking being active is what my ob told me
Follow his instruction no one else
I didnt know they could tell by ultrasound that your child had autism.
I was diagnosed at 39 weeks and sent over to be induced immediately. I had so much waters that it gushed out sporadically for hours after they broke it.
My baby girl ended up perfectly healthy other than a functional heart murmur. Hugs mamma❤
I had diabetes with my pregnancy and like u at 36 weeks I was told that there was more waters around baby when I questioned this they told me it could be my diabetes and scaned me 2 weeks later when they was still to much water but not as much as there was. My baby boy was born health 8.11 and currently 2 days old xx
Gestational diabetes causes too much fluid!! My last 3 I had too much fluid!! All are fine!! Don’t worry!
Mine swallowed fluid when she was born stayed in the nicu for 4 days.
I have never in my life heard a doctor and being able to tell if your child has autism in the womb.
Had 8L fluid
My son is an adult and perfectly fine
Never found any reason for the excess fluid and my subsequent pregnancies were fine
I had my baby in January (@ 37+1wk). From 26 weeks I was measuring big. They told me I had too much fluid. By 35 weeks, I had over 20cm depth of amniotic fluid. They no longer scanned me as they couldn’t, they said the baby stopped growing by 35 weeks and I was told to take co-codamol and strong painkillers to get through to 37 week as they wouldn’t bring her any earlier. they never picked anything up on the scans. They told me it could be a sign of down syndrome but we would only know once she was born. I was huge!! Pregnancy was exhausting and such a struggle. Once I had my baby (was induced then had emergency c-section due to her not being able to stay still in so much fluid), she was sent to a specialist hospital and had surgery at a day old. They told me she had ‘double bubble’ which resulted in her having a duodenal atresia. Her bowel wasn’t connected together so she couldn’t swallow the fluid therefore it built and built. When I had her, they drained 12L of fluid out my stomach. She was born 5lb 7oz, they are watching her for signs of autism. My baby came home at 3 weeks 3 days and other than being a little behind on the development side, she is now perfectly healthy. Either way, everything should be okay, sending love
I had gestational diabetes and had very high fluid… I was induced at 39 weeks and he was 9 pounds 6 ounces. I was told by my doctor that high fluid is a huge indicator for gestational diabetes…
So my oldest daughter has down syndrome my fluids were fine my youngest has autism fluids fine as well
They can’t detect if a child has autism while it’s in the womb…
Yes. My third pregnancy I had polyhydraminos(extra fluid) and was told he had a high chance of having neural tube defects. I was monitored every week until my C-section. He came out perfectly healthy. He just swallowed some of the extra fluid on his way out, but everything was okay
Happened to me! My second baby was huge 10lbs 5oz and he just peed alot ! Thats what the fluid was
I don’t think your doctor should be a doctor if they telling u that your baby may have autism or Down syndrome cause 1) a child cannot be labeled as autistic until I think 2/3 years old
2) doctors would’ve noticed way before you were 36 weeks if baby had Down syndrome
1… They cannot determine a child has autism while in the womb
2… They also do not detect downs in a standard ultrasound… That requires a specific ultrasound called a nuchal translucency scan… the fluid in the sack behind bubs neck is measured to detect the chances of extra chromosomes… otnerwise also done via blood test…
3… I had excess fluid while pregnant with my second… I carried alot of amniotic fluid. My daughter was born fine, however, when they broke my waters oh boy did it break!!
In a more simple explanation, your doctor is a f#cking clown
Its most likely high blood sugars. Watch what you eat, especially carbs and try to do some exercise like walking after dinner.
I had polyhydramis (too much fluid) with my daughter. She was born 2 weeks early. Probably could have waited longer but we did a membrane sweep to help labor along. I was never told anything like that. I was told that I was at high risk for early delivery due to water breaking. They broke my water tho with my daughter. She was born completely fine and healthy no nicu stay or anything
Both my babies had too much fluid and both came out perfect but was induced for both
I think your question has been answered more than adequately by these other lovely moms, so I’m just gonna say this: If your doctor really told you these things (about possible autism/down syndrome being the cause of extra fluid, & that it can’t possibly be your gestational diabetes), then PLEASE find a different doctor if at all possible, because the one you have now is a dangerous idiot!
I had the opposite around the same time as yourself, about lack of low fluid and doctors were panicking brought me for another scan 3days later and accordingly it was fine then near birth it was accordingly low again, baby was born healthy and happy no complications or medical issues. Sometimes the information is incorrect or sometimes it is partly correct, none of us here are medical professionals or are able to tell you not to worry it’ll be fine as your a mother your going to worry, the autism comment I would just wait you wouldn’t be able to really determine that until baby starts developing and growing up. Obviously downs could be determined straight after birth. But I would reassure yourself by asking loads of questions on all the possible outcomes that way you can be ready for any outcome to happen and somewhat prepare yourself x
Never have I heard that a child can have autism I’m I’m womb…
My son is currently 6 years who does indeed have autism as was Dignosed at early age due to being non verbal. I however didn’t have hardly any fluid I was mainly all baby he was only in his 6lbers but he was very very long. However as he got older he had a generic blood test and it shown that it falls down to the chromosomes and enzymes levels in the blood.
I have to admit he shouldn’t be saying your baby has autism or downs if they are not 100%!!
If your baby was downs they woukd of picked up on that before 36 weeks.
I was seek 2nd opinion.
Gestational diabetes can for sure be a indicator for extra fluid.
X
I was all fluid with my oldest and my doctor never once mentioned any of this. I got the speech about good vs bad pregnancies at the beginning and was told if I have any concerns to voice them and that my doc would do the same. My doctor had me so at peace my whole pregnancy because she was just so incredibly relatable and her bedside manner is how all doctors should aspire to be. I unfortunately moved before having my other two and while they were still fine and got the job done my other doctors were nothing compared to her. I’d recommend changing doctors, it’s always good to get a second opinion and you need to feel at ease and like you’re in good hands even if something could wrong.
They have to tell you any detail or worse possible case even if its not the case… I carried way to much fluid with both my sons… they told me the same things… possibly down syndrome… kept checking me for diabetes… its just what there taught and have to tell you of any possible outcome… me or my last two born sons don’t have diabetes… they were big healthy boys but not diabetic… I did have way too much amniotic fluid… it caused strain on my body but not health issues to me or my babys
I had this with my last and they did scare me with dif possibilities but she was born perfectly healthy they just had 2 b on the ball and I wasn’t allowed a home birth cuz of it but yea perfectly fine x

I had two pregnancies where I had too much fluid. It’s called polyhydramnios and it’s common in women who have gd I however did not have gd. I had ultrasounds every two weeks. With my daughter i had so much that she had a difficult time lowering into the birth canal correctly and I ended up having a c section. She had a hard time breathing and spent a week in the nicu but now she is perfectly healthy. With my fourth I had poly again and had a repeat scheduled c section and he was born healthy without any complications. He’s now 9 months old.
I had an excessive amount of fluid with both my pregnancies, my first I literally couldn’t feel her move with all the fluid it was scary. With my son he had a lot but not as much with my daughter. However he had the umbilical cord tightly wrapped around his neck my dr had to cut it before he was even all the way out and he was very blue/purple when he did get out. But both of my kids are perfectly healthy.
I was told I had excess fluid and my son is perfect. Doesn’t automatically mean downs, autism or anything else. It will make for a bigger mess when your water breaks though.
They said this with my youngest and made me do weekly ultrasounds earlier than normal. He ended up being 3 weeks early and still 8lbs 15oz was just a huge baby.
I had it as well, gd too, I also had an extra sac possible vanishing twin. Everything went fine and baby was healthy!
I had polyhdramnios with my 1st. Ultrasounds twice a week starting at 36 weeks and he was totally normal. Big boy, 8.6, but they scared me in to thinking he was going to be 10+. He was a perfectly healthy baby and 9 yrs old now without issues. Only delivery issue was that he didn’t drop down in position like he should have due to still “floating around” in the excess fluid. My water didn’t break but I was clearly in labor so they were concerned about a prolapsed cord if it moved down before he did. Didn’t happen but I had to labor the entire time at the hospital (not what I wanted as I LITERALLY lived across the street and would have preferred to do most of my labor at home like I later did with each of my girls, but they refused to let me leave just in case. A prolapsed cord is a true emergency, so I get it but . . . ). He did end up being “oblique” with his presenting part being the right side of his head versus his crown because he never slid in to the right position. If he was transverse (sideways) they would have forced a c-section but I really didn’t want one. In hindsight, I should have just let them do it because labor was VERY hard and delivery was physically traumatic thanks to his position. I have had 2 corrective surgeries to fix the damage so a c-section would have been better but I was stubborn. Still, there was NOTHING wrong with him. The amount of fear they instilled during the last month of my pregnancy was so stressful.
I had polyhydromnios with two of my pregnancies. Very high amounts over. My kids are fine! No problems. No csection or none of that needed
I had high fluid with my youngest. Diagnosed at 34 weeks and went for weekly ultrasounds after 36 weeks. She came out perfectly healthy! My OB said it’s always better to be safe just to monitor.
I had a lot of fluid around my first baby and they said there was no cause for concern. Just more room for baby… did you happen to have the genetic testing done? That would’ve shown the likelihood of conditions like downs
I’ve had both, too much fluid and too little fluid, both corresponded with how controlled my sugar was with the pregnancy, I’m diabetic already but babies really kick it into overdrive.
Both my kids are autistic and I didn’t have that issue.
Yes I Was Told That… When I Was Pregnant… My Dr Told Me It Was Chance That My Baby Was Gonna Be A DOWN SYNDROME Baby… Just Because Of My Age… I Was 44 Pregnant And Had Her At The Age Of 45… One Thing I Believe In Is God… He Has The Last Say So On Everything… Me And My Fiance Prayed On It… And Guess What God Blessed Us With A Healthy 5lb 13oz.Daughter…Put God First Stay Prayed Up Cause The Devil Is Busy…And Let God Have His Way…May God Bless U With A Wonderful Delivery And A Beautiful Healthy Baby…
I didn’t know you could detect autism by too much fluid I’m not a doctor but that sounds weird. Maybe by blood test or head size in the ultrasound.
There is no way that either of those two conditions can cause extra fluid. My doctor told me that more fluid is better than not enough.

That doesn’t sound right at all. I had a healthy baby with too much amniotic fluid, never hear of it being an indicator of any problems with the baby.
I had this , it’s called Polyhydramnios. My baby was normal and healthy hun they thought similar. During labour I had so much fluid come out it was escaping down the hall way and the dr was ankle deep in it. It’s very rare and some doctors will never see it or witness it in their lifetimes. So much so my dr thanked me for having it as he only read about it .
I had so much fluid I had my baby 11 weeks early - turns out I had a non malignant tumour on my placenta - placenta weighed more than my baby at birth (it was 2.5 kilos - baby was 1.7 kilos) that was 35 years ago and my son is in excellent health, successful, happy - an amazing man.
I had Polyhydramnios as well with my first. She was/is perfectly healthy.
Your doctor seems very “green” or inexperienced. Down Syndrome would’ve been detected way earlier in you pregnancy around 10 weeks. That’s when they test for those kind of conditions. Autism is not diagnosed in utero at all. I had GD and preeclampsia with my second child 18 years ago and she is healthy and was the heaviest of my 3 children at birth. Try and get a second opinion if possible before birth and a new, more knowledgeable doctor after. No one needs that kind of stress during pregnancy at all.
Please don’t stress all will be ok your baby will be your baby whatever and all will be fine just wait and see
Gd causes lots of fluid but that’s not to say it causes problems so relax if you can and enjoy your pregnancy
Not long to wait anyway xx
God bless
I was told I have too much fluid as well (polyhydramnios) and no one ever mentioned autism or Down syndrome as a reason to why I have so much amniotic fluid. They said it could be gestational diabetes causing it, but I didn’t fail my gd test.
I had this during my pregnancy that I was taking insulin 4 times a day. My son was born 2 weeks early at 10 lbs. He is now 13. No down or autism but adhd that runs in my family. He also was high on the charts for weight in the beginning but went to being average.
I was told I had too much fluid, that was way back, 42 years ago. I had gained too much, I went from 115 to 163 pounds at delivery. He weighed almost 9 pounds when he was born. The only thing he had was low blood sugar, otherwise, he was fine. Good luck with your new arrival. I wouldn’t worry about it too much…
Autism would not cause you to have too much fluid. That can’t even be diagnosed when pregnant.
Downs can cause extra fluid but If it’s downs I would be shocked finding out this late. did you have a 12 week and 20 week ultrasound? Usually markers for Downs can be detected by 20 weeks at the very latest. I had an ultrasound & blood test at 12 weeks to rule out downs and other genetic disorders. I’m surprised if this wasn’t offered to you.
Excess fluid isn’t always a problem, but I’d get another doctors opinion. This doctor doesn’t seem very thorough. Diabetics are prone to more fluid, so that does Not necessarily mean there’s a problem with baby.
I also had excess fluid around my baby. He was born on schedule and perfectly healthy. The doctor would’ve picked up on anything like downs syndrome through genetic testing which is done in your second trimester.
I had Polyhydramnios and my son is as smart as anything and has a brilliant temperament. There are so many reasons for this. Please research and put you’re mind at rest.
It happened to me. I was told my baby might have facial deformities. He has none. He does have significant learning disabilities but there’s no obvious connection to the excess amniotic fluid.
The good news is he is 21 years old now and a straight “A” student who will be starting his senior year in college this fall. All is well!
My second pregnancy I had over 7 litres of fluid around baby and she is a perfectly healthy happy attitude filled 2 and half year old
Ask your doctor and do whatever your doctor thinks is best. Don’t use emotions to make decision about this as decisions taken during emotional turmoil can become a disaster. Once again, follow the advice of your doctor.
