Thoughts on DEPO?

For those who get the depo shot what do you like and not like about it? I’m still breastfeeding so I can’t have anything with estrogen in it and I think a shot would be easier than taking the pill everyday but not sure about it.

I gained so much weight :slightly_frowning_face: I was on it for a year and it took so long for my period to start after I stopped it and it was so abnormal I almost couldn’t track it.

I bled the entire time outside of the first 5 days of the shot. Constantly emotional and bleeding for over 12 months. After my last shot, I went into premenopause and became infertile for 2.5 years. I had to go through hormone therapy and had 2 miscarriages during that time.

Was on it for years twice, never put any extra weight on,first time it stopped my periods,2nd time it didn’t,I loved it had no really side effects and I honestly would have it again if I was younger

I’ve been on it for 6 months and have lost weight. But I was scared of that specific side effect so I went on a diet. I think it affects every women’s body different. My cramps are worse and my period is extended. Personally I won’t get it next time around.

I had absolutely no issues with it. But was pulled off of it because it can cause osteoporosis to be a higher risk factor. So if it runs in the family just don’t take it.

I gained so much weight and became depressed I had to see a therapist and be place on meds :disappointed: I stopped depo provera and my period did not come back until after 1 year. I then had an IUD placed and it was the best decision I made!

Bled non stop on it. Do not recommend.

I have had 0% side effects. Been on it on and off (between babies) since 2002.

I took the depo one time i bled nonstop for about 3 months and started leaking out my boobs lol that was it for me it was one of the worst birth controls i ever took and it was just one shot

It took my DIL over 5 yrs to get pregnant after stopping the shot, then she dropped 2 eggs and we have 2 boys

Stay away from it, if possible. Worst side effects ever and its terrible for you.

I did the depo for years. No periods no side effects. When I got close to 30 I went with the nexplanon implant also no periods no side effects

I was on depo for 5 years, irregular bleeding for the 1st year then no periods at all, weight gain, after going off it I did not get a period for 18 months so this caused a delay in being able to fall pregnant again, the biggest issue was extreme bone density problems caused by the depo, at 27 years old the bones in my hip and neck after getting a bone density scan came back at estimated age of 70, that is how much damage was caused, I advise against depo.

I gained a lot of weight when I was on it

I’ve been on it over 10 years and never had any issues. No periods no weight gain nothing.

There is a low dose birth control pill you can take while breastfeeding. But I was on the shot a long time ago for five years with no issues besides occasional breakthrough bleeding. I prefer the pill because I know when to expect my period and it is usually less than four days long

So many issues, please think about this, there is nuva ring its more localized and you control it.

Well…I got pregnant on it.

I absolutely hated it. Made me gain 50lbs :sob:

I gained a lot of weight and had to go on the pill after the shot to get regulated again. Was not a fan other than no period

I gained weight, my joints hurt, and I developed issues with my teeth.

I was in for 8 years, no periods, I did gain weight but im not the healthiest eater lol. had no side affects other than that. when I got off the first time, I did have a month long period but I got pregnant within a year . I switched to the pill till hubs gets snipped later this year only bc im in my late 30’s

I was done have kids I was fixed but had period issues and not gaining weight. So I did the depo for 2 years. Had no issues… period and pain went away and I gained the weight I wanted. So it depends on you really.

It honestly depends on your body and your body’s reaction to the birth control itself. I have been on the depo twice. First time was on it for 3 years - no period, no weight gain. After my 2nd child, I went on the depo, was on it for a year and stopped as I spotted the whole time mostly, headaches all the time, weight gain. I would spot for a month, and then nothing until the time for my next needle. I have been on nothing since January still waiting to see if I will regulate again or not as it can take a while for the Depo to get out of your system.

I’ve been on depo for about 9 years now. I LOVE it. I didnt overly gain weight. I don’t bleed. Don’t have to worry about for 12 weeks. Now, it comes in the full kit, I can do it myself. It helps with my hormones. I’m not as crazy lol. I have nothing bad to say about it.

Well…I got pregnant on it

I gained so much weight from it and then didn’t get a period for like a year after I stopped. I still think it really messed with my body tbh.

No no no to Depo! It causes osteoporosis

Horrible side effects, I bled the the entire time I was on it, some days I spotted & others I fully bled, I gained weight & the cramps would put me in bed for hours, just not worth it for me. I now have an implant & I love it! No more periods!

It prevented me from being able to lose any baby weight. It wasn’t til it wore off I could lose again. It’s said to do that. I also took it while trying to breastfeed and it yanked my supply. The hospital issued it to me right after my son was born, I don’t remember thinking about it much or researching it because I was a mess after a traumatic birth and all I could think about was not being pregnant again any time soon. I’d ask your dr about it too!

Been on it for about 15 years. I take calcium pills with it bc of long term use. Now that I’ve hit my mid 40 weight seems to stick to me more than before but I don’t blame it all on depo I’ve got other health issues unrelated as well

Depo was horrible weight gain got pregnant on it

Awful for your body but then again so is any hormonal birth control. I quit mine last year and have yet to start my period.

I know someone who did the shot and it made her mean I mean she was rude and didn’t care what she said

Depo was terrible for me. Weight gain, constant irregular bleeding… I quit after shot 3.

I absolutely love it! I was on it for 4 years had some issues we thought could’ve been that (it wasn’t) and I swapped for a few months and it was the worse thing I chose to do. I swapped back to the depo and I’m back to my normal self, no period until maybe a week before I’m due for my next shot. In the past before the shot. I was on The Nexplanon implant I had in for 3 years and damn near bled the whole time it was in. I had the pill and the iud as well and the shot has been what’s worked the best for me…

I went from size 24 to 18 very quickly after I stopped. I think it caused alot of my depression.

Nope. I do nfp and use fertility detection from clear blue

I got the shot and two weeks later I had a TIA :-1:

:stop_sign: Absolutely hell no. Made my hair fall out and had uncontrollable hormone and weight gain issues. Avoid like the plague!!!

Horrible made me really sick and bleed for 4 months on it, I vowed to never get it again!

Got the shot Sept. 2018. Bled everyday. Was supposed to get the shot July 2019. Never did and never got another I didn’t stop bleeding until January 2020. Never had a period or ovulated until sometime later. Ended up finding out I was pregnant in May 2020.

Wouldn’t recommend. Has a surgeon generals warning- not to be used for more than 2 years. Can cause bone density loss. Wasn’t approved by the FDA for female contraception the first 3 times.

Made for male sex offenders. And is what they use to this day. It was never meant for women. I advise you not to get it.

Research all the issues with it. Can cause miscarriages and birth defects for babies born after receiving the depo.

I gained about 15#over the 8 years I was on it. My cycles were non existent while taking it. When I decided to stop the medication, I had a period that wouldn’t stop and lasted for 5 months! I ended up anemic, many complications as my Dr told me my body was just adjusting again. It was pure hell getting my body regulated again. But while taking the medications/injections, it was FABULOUS! I wouldn’t go back on it now though… To me it’s not worth the side effects.

I didn’t like the constant bleeding. Would not recommend.
