Thoughts on owning a pitbull with kids?

My pitty “Loki” is amazing with my son and my son is a crazy child and Loki has some very bad anxiety but you just have to learn his body language to tell when your pup needs a break from your child :woman_shrugging:t4: pitbulls are amazing dogs especially if you get a puppy you can train easier than an adult

Our girl is great with both our kids our son is autistic and they are best buds he can lay and cuddle with her they have true love lol our 9 year old loves playing with her too she’s the best dog I have ever known and and amazing protector never mean to anyone loves everyone

I’d do it. I have 2 right now. They’re amazing with my 5 year old and she’s had a pitbull in the house since she was 11 months old. They’re literally just another dog. Train the dog though. They’re stubborn dogs and very smart. You have to be consistent and be more stubborn than they are😂

Love those dogs but if you have one just be prepared to always be on the alert, you need to be careful with any dog but pitties could do an awful lot of damage in so little time, I would leave them to people who can give them all their free time, they are one of my favourite dogs and I love animals, it’s just a bit of advice, good luck with your choice

No. There are so many other breeds. Pick another. Go to the website dogbite.com and look at all the research. And videos. Check with your homeowner’s insurance company and see how much your insurance rate will increase if you get a pit versus a golden retriever, boxer, etc. And then ask about the statistics of dog attacks, either of family members or others, for which you could be sued, and you’ll see why insurance companies are taking on a bigger risk with a pit, and why it will cost so much more to insure a house with a pit.

Yes, many people have pits who are good and loving pets. And many others have pits who start out that way until there’s an incident. Even with beloved pits who were treated well by their owners. Then you see them on the news saying “He was such a baby, we never thought he would do anything like this.”

Why take that chance when there are so many other dogs to choose from? Yes, Any breed can bite, any breed can attack, but the statistics show your risks are much greater with a pit.

Lots of training! Especially on behavior with children/other animals. Mine sadly can’t be around cats because she had no experience with them until she was a few years old and only sees them as chew toys.

Big old pit here and they both love each other. Don’t go by the stereotype, just depends on how you raise them. Any dog can “snap”. Have had pits all my life and they’re the BIGGEST babies.

They are definitely safer than a chihuahua

Our pittie loves our baby. Raise them with a lot of love and you will have no worries.

Pit bulls are good dogs along as they are raised right. I have two pit bulls with a four year old.

My pits were amazing with my kids. They loved all kids. When they were babies nobody could touch them unless I said it was ok.

I literally have three currently (kind of fostering one atm he was a stray) they all love my two boys (1 & 3) Pits are just very stubborn and hard headed, you have to have the patience to train them and work with them. But they are amazing, loving, & protective dogs.

You should probably be more worried about the cat… or a chihuahua . Treat the dog like family and it’ll be family.

I have 3 pits, and have rescued MANY more. There’s so goofy and funny and loves the kids.
2 of mine are the biggest of babies.

I have one who is a big baby! He babysits my kids outside and inside he lays or plays with them. All in how you raise them and how you allow your child to behave with them

I grew up with having pitbulls. Never once was bit. They were all loving dogs

Never had a put bull. But I can tell you this. Never trust a chihuahua. Little demon bastards.

You are crazy , don’t even ask. Do you listen to the news? Why risk your babies life?Never in a million years. Do you love your baby? Please NO, NO.

My parents have a pitbull and she is so protective over my son. If anybody tries to mess with him, she is right on guard. She’s got some aggression towards other dogs unfortunately but would never think about touching my son. They call them nanny dogs for a reason.

This pitbull shit is so over played. If it’s a puppy and going to grow up with your kids it more then likely will be fine.

Pit bulls were known as the nanny dog and the pit bulls that have been around my daughter have been soooo sweet you just gotta know how to train and treat them good

A dog only behaves how he’s treated. Want a good dog? Be good to your dog.

My pitbull is 8 years old and since before I found out I was pregnant he would kiss my belly and follow me everywhere great with both my boys his their big brother never in his 8 years has he bitten anyone

That’s a perfect time to have a pit around a kid to grow up with them…

I got a pitbull when I was 2. She was the best dog ever! She would help me dig for worms when I went fishing. She cuddled with me every night, she was very protective of my whole family (she never bit anyone), and she was so easy to train. Pits are the best family dog in my opinion. They’re big love bugs.

Pitbulls are nanny dogs. Just train them properly and give them lots of love. There only aggressive if bred wrong or trained wrong or abused. They are not bad breeds.

If you’re truly good pet owners then it doesn’t matter what breed it is. Pit bulls arent born to kill they learn that from abusive horrible owners.

Pits are amazing! I have a pit/lab mix and a rescue pittie, and they are the absolute best with my kids

We had one while my children were growing up. Hulk was an amazing brother to my kids. Now we have 3 and they are wonderful with my grandson. Don’t listen to the negativity. Raise them right and they’re the BEST companions.

Best dog I’ve ever had. Just teach the kids how to be gentle cause any dog could snap not just a pit. He has to be anywhere the kids are.

I have 2 pits and I have a 4 month old baby. They are nanny dogs! It’s all in the way you raise them.

Pits used to be used as nanny dogs hundreds of years ago. They are amazing with everyone, especially kids. When my daughter was born, I had two pits, a Rottweiler, a Pomeranian and little terrier, the two small dogs were the worst with my girl, they still are not to be trusted, the bigger ones thought my daughter was their baby and needless to say, she was/is the most protected human in the house! They love each other! She even plays doctors with them, they are patient and caring, love to cuddle, aim to please!

I think the most important thing is to teach your children respect for animals and their boundaries. Dog attacks aren’t breed specific. In my experience, pitties make great pets… but you need to choose animals that fit your family and lifestyle. :black_heart:

Pit bulls are amazing! I have had mine for seven years. He is such a blessing to our family. My children are 20, 15, 5, & 3.

I have a pitbull lab mix and she is seriously the best dog we’ve ever had.

Best dog I ever had was a pitbull .

The one on the right he’s my brothers pit and he’s the sweetest you’ll ever meet. Hes the best protector of my little girl and my boy. Just depends if they were raised to be abusive or trained to be the sweetest.

I have 2 pit (mixes) and a lab. My daughter loves them all and our youngest pit who’s about 1-ish is her favorite. He’ll cuddle her and she likes to “pet” him (she’s 6 months)

They are originally bread to be nanny dogs… I’ve owned them my whole life have 3 currently and its the kids you gotta watch for being mean n biting not the pit

Pitties were literally bred to stay home with kids while parents went and did things. It’s how you raise them. Teach your children to respect the dog’s space. Teach them when to be able to tell when the dogs have had enough. There’s truly no such thing as a bad dog. It’s a bad owner.

Pit bulls are the best!!! All 3 of mine love my 2 boys ages 5 and 3.

They are just like any other dog I hate how people say. Their mean dogs no it not the dog it the people who takeing care of it to get it to be mean I have 4 kids ages 2 7 9 and 12 and had two putts at once my putt I have now is my 2 year old boys bestfriend no matter were the baby is the dog is right there with him

I worked at a vet clinic for years. Pitbulls were one of the extremely short list of breeds that never once offered to bite me in all of those 10+ years. They were notoriously good patients.

Pits are actually some of the most loving and loyal dogs out there… Long as the parents are both good tempered and you raise it in a loving well rounded home with socialization. I see no issue with it… At one time they were nanny dogs

My 4 year olds best friend is our 8 year old pit.

Pitbulls literally only want to love and please their owners/family. If you treat them right and raise them properly, pay for the proper training if you don’t have the knowledge, they will not be a problem. We had a pitbull and she lived up to the ‘nanny dog’. Every night she would sleep with the kids. Every single night! She refused to sleep anywhere else. We couldn’t get her out of their beds lol. I never worried about her being alone with the kids, ever. Only thing is, pitbulls are very high energy and might knock over smaller children when excited… other than that it’s just like owning any other dog. You need to teach your kids boundaries and be very on top of that. I have a Doberman and he does not like to be bugged when he’s in his spot on the couch and he’s made that quite clear to the kids lol so they know now not to bother him when he’s resting in that certain spot. Once he’s out of that spot they can play and cuddle him and he will accept it with open paws! Getting dogs from a puppy to grow up with your kids is even better. Those kids will never be in danger if the pitty is around, that’s for sure! Pitbulls are extremely loyal!

Pitt bulls were litterally nanny dogs. they are sweet loving and amazing with kids.

they get a bad rap cause of animal abusers.

every dog has different temperaments. but by nature pitbulls are sweet

Hes 7, and they best dog you could ever hope for. We have 2 kids, and he loves them. Don’t believe stereotypes, especially about dogs

We love pitts! They are so silly and sweet! Our daughters were older like 2 &4 but my daughter is autistic and the pup never had any issues. We sadly lost her due to a bad heat before her spay.

He seriously doesn’t give a crap what’s going on and loves my daughter because she feeds him and she leaves her stuffed animals laying around which make for GREAT dog toys.

We had a boxer black lab and a pit bull growing up. Our pit bull was the sweetest best dog ever. She loved me and my sister and was never once aggressive towards to either of us and she was rescued out of a bad home where she had the right to be aggressive but never was with us. When my dad brought her home it was nothing but loved and play time!

If you bring the dog up in a loving enviroment theres no reason to worry, it’s there upbringing their owners that truely affect dogs temperaments, if you show them love and loyalty their do the exact same :heartpulse: we have a staffie who is super protective of my kids, never harmed them and weve had her 9 years, from a pup and my kids are 8 and 4 xxx

I had a blue pit Bull for 8 years, sadly we just lost him a couple weeks ago. My daughter is 2 1/2, she became his person from the day I brought her home, they were inseparable and loved each other!!! I personally have never met a mean pit Bull, it is all in how you raise them. Like ANY other dog if you show them kindness and love then that is what they will know and how they will act. I love the breed and if we decide to get another dog, it will be a pit Bull.

It does not matter what breed the dog is it is now it is raised and treated so as long as the dog is loved and we’ll cared for you should be just fine I have raised 5 kids with dogs all their lives and never had any issues good luck x

Pits are great dogs even with kids

We have 2 pits and my mother in law has 3. My kids are up there just about everyday but anyway the kids have always treated the dogs right and in turn the dogs are very protective or our kids. Our newest dog is a rescue and he has attached himself to my daughter. As long as you raise them right they are very good, obedient, caring protective and loving dogs. Also going to put this in, my mother in law also has a Chihuahua dog that has snapped at my kids, the pits never have.

I have a 2 year old & a 4 year old. We have had 2 pits (1 passed) & my mom has a Rottweiler & they are great with the kids. They are high energy dogs & I do suggest crate training incase the dog needs a break from the kids. Ours are all trained that the crate is their safe space & they will go lay down with the door open if they need a break. The kids are also taught to leave the crate allow & that it’s the dogs “bedroom”. Overall awesome family dog & super protective. Both breeds are just big lovable babies & think they are lap dogs.

Chihuahuas are more likely to bite your kids than a pit bull will. It’s not the breed that is born vicious it’s how they are raise and taught. Just like kids.

My 10 year old daughter was bitten in the face by a “friendly” pitbull and because the dog wasnt vaccinated, my daughter had to have a series of 24 shots over a 3 month period of time, she is 23 now and still has scars on her face😭 it’s not worth the risk.

We just adopted one back in December. Sweetest dog ever! My daughter absolutely loves him.

Pitbulls used to be used to watch over kids. We just adopted a 6 year old pit mix and hes great. Honestly, it all has to do with how the dog is raised and the environment. ANY breed can be mean and aggressive if its taught to be. Raise it in a loving, safe home and that dog will put its live on the line for you. Most dog bites happen because they were provoked. So teach the pup to be easy and gentle as well as your kids. Its simple.

My pitbull is an angel !!! She is almost 3yrs old …we’ve had her since a puppy ,so she has no behavioral issues…I will never put her in a kennel tho …she is wonderful with pets of all kinds and is great with kids and rowdy or not …my 5yr old plays all over her and she loves the attention …she sleeps in his room at night too! she also loves my 2 month old and is such a mother…she will come get me if she hears him cry before me …if he pooped she will come get me heheh …and she is constantly trying to keep the cat away if she gets too close …my little guard dog …sometimes I think she thinks it her baby ! …when I was pregnant the dog also …stopped jumping and putting her paws on me when I’d come home from work …that was before I found out that I was pregnant …she is so intuitive…and definitely more snuggly on days I feel sick or sad …like any dog tho ohhhh she chewed soooo much as a puppy tho …omg …outgrown it now but tht was our only problem

I had my pit bull for 14 years. She was the best dog and loved everyone. She passed a few years ago and we recently found another pit at the spca. Our new girl is such a sweetheart too and loves ours kids so much. The puppy will grow up with your kids, im sure it will have a great bond with them.

All my Pitbulls were great with the kids and cat. It’s all in the way their raised.

I don’t personally think the breed matters, but how you take care of them and what you teach them does matter. I’ve had a pit-weiler and he was amazing the best dog i have ever had!

It’s how u raise them. My friend has a pitbull with a 5 yrs old. They are best friends he s so loving and gentle

It’s just about how they are raised. And it perfect to have a pup that is used to being around children.

I have a pit and a German shepherd mix… my pit is better with my kids. She gentle and protective and sweet and they can do anything to her and she doesn’t care. (I always get onto them for doing anything they aren’t supposed to.) My 4 year old routinely uses her as a pillow :woman_shrugging:

Getting a puppy that has never been mistreated and raising them up right you should have 0 problems. Pit bulls have a bad rep but they are just big babies when loved and treated correctly!

Its all in how you raise them, both pitts and kids. You can train your dof to be obedient and loving, but you should also train your child nor to hit them or ride them like a dog too. I have a pitt bully, and a pit mix, they are both amazing dogs and very loving.

Pitbulls and kids are great together.

Do you feel this way for any dog or just because it’s a pitbull? Any dog can bite at any moment…
any who personal experience pitbulls are the BEST they are loyal and loving… as with any dog it’s all in how you treat and raise them and teach children to respect them

As with any breed or animal, that is a very personal choice. Read and research.

No other dog could handle the bs my kids do better than our pit. He’s the kids’ dog and he knows it. They sleep with him, lay on top of him, put clothes on him etc. I have zero worries about him with the kids.

They were called a nanny breed for a reason. They are great with kids, as long as they are treated right.

Pit bulls are big babies. Teaching kids that dogs have boundaries is very important tho. With any breed its possible to get pushed too far. It’s your job as a dog owner to learn how to treat your dog.

This is our little chunky butt. He’s about 5 months now and honestly best thing we did because our daughter and him are growing up together. She a year and half. They are really close and always calls out to him and looks for him. They honestly can’t be separated

I have a huge pit and he is amazing with my son. So protective too.

My pit was THE best with my daughter.

They are the most kind and loving nanny dogs. I would not hesitate

I have two and they are amazing with kids cats dogs like with every dog breed you need to monitor your child and the dog when together so that the child understands what the dog likes or does not like

We have a pit, got him when he was 13 months. He is almost 7 now & great with all 4 of my kids.

We have a pit he will be 6 on 4/20. Him and our son are best friends. Bam will get in between people if he thinks they mean brax harm or if he dont know them. Hes is the guard dog and the most loving boy. Get a pit.!

They’re are the most cutest dogs but I honestly wouldn’t have one as a mom.

Just my opinion but unless you have money for training (all dogs may require training regardless of the breed) and you’ll watch them like a hawk around your kids (again ANY breed of dog), then I wouldn’t. Big dogs in general even if they’re super sweet can easily seriously harm a small child just by getting too excited. Pits are my favorite breed by far I hate the stigma they have around their breed. It’s like with any dog… train the well from the beginning and be willing to invest in further training, never leave a child alone with a dog especially a big one, etc… just some common sense protocols.

I have a pit bull puppy with my daughter he is the best dog I’ve ever had

Responsible breeding, with good genes and solid temperament, obedience training with some solid recall and leave it commands… it should be ok. But they can be high drive animals and can have a high prey drive, which is where training comes in. You have to be moderately active to keep them satisfied… boredom and lack of mental/ physical activity can turn into aggression and that’s for any dog breed that is active

Depends how you raise them. We got one when I was 16 and she’s still around. She’s good with my 4 year old and is protective over him. Just be aware and knowledgeable, watch their patterns/habits/moods. Just like any other dog

We have a pit, a pit lab mix, a boxer/Shepard mix & a German shepard. We have had them since our son was a toddler… Hes 9 now. Just train and teach boundaries to the kiddo & the dog.

We have two male pitbulls ever since my kids were 2 and 1 month old. They are great dogs big ol babies really.
