What can cause sore breasts while pumping?

I faithfully pump every 2-3 hours but the sides of my boobs still feel kinda sore … I’m so scared of getting mastitis … is this normal ? What can I do

It sounds like you may have the wrong flange size and are not emptying your breasts enough.
If you are able to I would recommend reaching out to a lactation consultant and or google a nipple measuring tape (free templates online) almost all pumps come with a standard 21 or 24mm flange. Most women measure between 17-19mm. You can order inserts on amazon
Research shows that warm compress and massage does not actually help for a clogged duct! Your duct is pinched off from swelling so cold compress and advil to help alleviate any inflammation should help!
If you nurse as well frequently try to do that if you are a exclusive pumper, try shorter and more frequent pump sessions and try to keep on a routine schedule so you dont accidentally cause an oversupply which in turn can bring on mastitis as well. Sunflower lethicin can help thin your milk and can bring some relief as well!

Warm compress and massage!! Before and after pumping. It helps loads!!

Improper flange fit did this to me

Warm compresses, gently massage from the outer edge of your breast inwards. I know it’s weird but cold cabbage leaves in the bra periodically help too(though you feel like a walking cabbage roll :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
When you feed, try to make sure bubs chin is facing the sore part of the breast . Good luck

Consult a lactation specialist. So much to consider, like age of baby how long you pump for, placement of pump on breast.

It may be the wrong flange size, it shouldn’t hurt.

Try massaging while pumping, you can use your hands or a lactation massager. Make sure you are pumping long enough to get everything out, and turn up the suction towards the end of your pumping session, and change modes on your pump, don’t keep it on one mode the whole time!

You can put raw green cabbage leaves on your breasts or inside your nursing bra and it helps with the pain. I read rht somewhere. Its an old wives tip.

Go to a LC and get measured for a flange. Double check your pump too.
