A lot of 3 year olds cannot print their own name. But, recognition of their name is common. A lot can change during the age of 3, that’s a whole 12 months. I don’t know how many times parents signing up their kiddies say “they are sooo smart, they can count to…”
At our outdoor daycare/preschool we really focus on the social emotional development of the children. Don’t get me wrong, all the other areas of development are also very, very important and we provide the opportunities for those to grow. But, as I say to my parents “your child can know all the ABCs and 123s, but if they don’t know how to take turns, show kindness, be helpful to a friend, or self regulate, they are going to struggle when they go to kindergarten. When we see a child is having a challenging time and we believe there is an underlying problem or delay, we bring in Supported Development to help us, the child and the family. There is such a wide spread on the developmental wheel, but if you feel in your gut something isn’t right, you can have your self refer your child to the infant or child development centre to have them assessed. Growing up has never come the easier way. It comes with lots of challenges like lost marriages, lost love, financial and job problems and so many more, but still there has always been a solution to every challenges that we face in life.
