Has anything changed in your life? New baby, New significant other, new house etc. How often are you cleaning the litter box? Did you switch litter? Is the cat fixed(spayed or neuter)?

Could be multiple things.
I have 2 cats. 1 boy 1 girl.
Reasons I’ve learned for why cats will pee elsewhere. (My cats are both fixed and my female is moody. My male doesn’t pee anywhere. Always my female )

  • Litter boxes needs to be scooped (which gets done daily), or they are due for a good scrub and all new litter.
  • my female cat is mad at one of us stoopid humans
  • jealous of another animal or child.
  • the dog wants to play and my cat is mad at the dog
  • Urinary Tract infection
  • dominance
  • food switch (if mainly dry food diet, try adding wet food into the feeding schedule. My cats get wet food for breakfast, and free feed their dry food throughout the day/night.

Cats are kinda a-holes sometimes, that could be the reason right there :woman_shrugging:
Vinegar is great to get the pee smell out.

It could have been that the previous tenants cats sprayed, and that triggered the need for yours to. I’m not sure of the solution, but that could be the cause. And the home wasn’t properly cleaned before you moved in. That happened to us in the past.

My cat started doing this randomly and she just needed to get fixed! It was between that or anxiety but thankfully she just needed to get fixed then she stopped! Also if you have more than one level in your house make sure you have a litter box on every floor for them to use!

Sounds like you have a boy on your hands. I have a male cat that I didn’t get fixed young enough (in my opinion anyway). He sprayed everything and everywhere. Nothing made him stop either. I have had him for 11 years so far. He is an outdoor cat now though and has been for a long time. He lives on my enclosed porch and loves it, doesn’t even want to come indoors anymore. My kid call me the crazy cat lady as I have a total of 9 cats. 6 indoors and 3 outdoor. My house never smells like cats or their litter boxes. All are fixed except my youngest 2 which will be getting done soon. I have 3 litter boxes that I scoop every other day. If the litter boxes are not clean to their liking they will go somewhere else.

Sometimes cats do not like to use the same liter box as another cat. You should have multiple liter boxes. Are they all spayed/neutered? If not that’s a likely cause too.
Cats also like their liter box to be clean. They won’t use a dirty liter box.
Clean where they have peed with bleach and/or peroxide, try deep cleaning the entire house to remove the urine and get fresh clean liter pans.

The “easy fix” isn’t spaying or neutering, unfortunately because all of my cats are fixed and they still mark  it could be the litter you are using, maybe we gifted or bought something with a new scent, different animals in the house and so many other possibilities. We had to let our cats go outside because of this and now we don’t have any issues.

You can try a pheromone plug in, sometimes it helps, the other cat could have jumped the other and now it’s scared to go to litter box. It can be a 1000 things that cause it. My old cat done this, she didn’t start until she was 13 or so

  1. Each cat should have their own litter box cleaned daily
  2. It’s a territory thing. Maybe you have rodents or a cat got into the house or possum

You should have at the very least one litter box per cat in the house, ideally more. Cats like to have their “own” box to use. Also multi-cat litter and/or try a new type of litter. Otherwise, it could be a territory issue, or like someone else in the comments said, a previous tenant had a cat that sprayed and the smell is still there.

Behavior issue, lot’s of reasons. Neutered male, spayed female? Is it urinating or spraying? Has something changed, new pet, new baby, new litter or litter box placement? Have you tried feline pheromones?

I have 2 girl cats ans I think it started because one of my children is constantly shutting the door down to their litter box. Now I have an item I’m trying to make smell better because my kids loves it.

Are they fixed? If not they are spraying for dominance. Cats who are fixed may also pee due to many reasons that could be medical like UTI, dominance, anger, anxiety, cluster, ect. There’s many reason.

I know for me my cat did this, she had cancer but it hard to say.

Whenever my cat would have a kidney infection she would pee everywhere

Cats only urinate outside the box when they either -
Have a urinary infection
They don’t like the litter ( especially if it’s been changed to a different kind )
The box isn’t cleaned enough
Or something has changed in their life ( new pet, new baby, new person )
If jone of this applies, your cat is just a shit

It’s best to rule out medical first when you said the vet checked your cat and everything else was did the vet also check for bladder stones or mass? These can only be done through ultrasound or x-ray. You might want to look into it. Also, it could be behavioral. Are you scooping the boxes daily? Tried putting out a couple extra litter boxes, even though you have only one cat. Are the boxes in a noisy area you might want to move them. You can also add some thing called cat attract to the litter boxes. It doesn’t cost that much. Make sure the boxes are big enough and easy to get into and wash them with mild soap. Is the cat declawed? If so, it could have chronic pain and would need to see a specialist. Are there any cats outside coming around? It could be stress from that. another thing you can try is feel way plug-in diffusers it’s pheromones that help promote coming. Hope that helps.

Some like to mark territory. But sometimes it could be a Bladder, Kidney, UTI or Diabetes

If it’s a male they start spraying before they get fixed
