Has anyone been told their baby’s heart is backwards? i have an appt coming soon to see if her 2 main vessels are in the correct place, if they arent she will require surgery when i have her. I just want to know what to expect. I know every experience is different but some personal insight from you ladies would be helpful! thank you
Help a mama out and respond anonymously on our forum. What does it mean if babies heart is backwards?
I think as long as it functions normally it should be ok. However, I am not a medical expert and recognize that there may be ramifications that I am not aware of. I would think that a backwards heart that functions properly would only create issues (for the surgeons) if your child needs heart surgery later in life. Again, this is simply my completely non-medical expert opinion.
Savannah Kilpatrick, will you share Marshall’s history with this mama? #chdawareness #marshallstrong
It’s called Dextrocardia. Usually it is not life threatening. It just means it’s pointing towards the right side of the chest rather than the left. However, there is a higher chance of having abnormalities in other organs in the abdominal cavity. It’s a congenital defect. As long as all the valves work correctly, there shouldn’t be an issue
Ask your pediatrician
My son has a backwards heart and didn’t have to have surgery
I remember when they told me while having an ultrasound and I was so worried, the ultrasound tech went an got another tech and two doctors and they were intrigued with it but had no concerns.
Dextrocardia I’m assuming. Usually it’s not life-threatening and many people go on to live a totally normal life. It can affect some organs due to placement etc so I’m assuming they’ll do a full scan after birth to make sure everything is “running” smoothly don’t worry too much mama! Uncommon for sure, but not super scary.
My youngest didn’t have this but he has a right aortic arch wrapping around his esophagus. They literally told me all the worst case scenarios while I was pregnant with him. He’s almost 2 and other than having an echo and a ct under anesthesia, he’s ok. I think they don’t mean to scare you but try to prepare for the worst kind of thing. They should be referring you to a pediatric cardiologist and you should be getting a fetal echo done to confirm. The cardiologist is the one who can give you the most concrete answers! Don’t be afraid to ask a million questions too.
My grandma had a backwards heart she never knew until she was in her 60s when they went in to do a 5 way by pass they figured out her heart was backwards and had some crazy surgery her heart surgery was needs due to diabetes and a long history or dangerous blood sugar levels my dad had a regular heart but has two holes so apparently it somewhat is genetic …. If you have other children I highly suggest you have them checked for irregularities my daughter had turners syndrome and passed away at 6 month due to heart valve failure one side did not close all the way cause blood to back flow it was immediate I know she’s in a good place with god and she’s doing much better then me but I had My three pregnancy that followed check vigorously my three living children and very healthy with no kidney heart liver ect condition praise god
My little brother has a backwards heart and he has always been fine it functions the same just on different side that’s all my little brother does all kinds of sports and still plays like a kid everything should be fine
My husband’s appendix was on opposite side of his body. Pretty intense when it went bad and they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. He almost lost his life over it. Thankfully exploratory surgery found it. Praying for you and your baby.
My last paycheck was $17088 working 20 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can’t believe how easy it was once I tried it out.

My youngest has ebstines abnormality ots diffrent from what your saying. His heart valves are in the wrong place and not all how they should be. Everyone’s journey is diffrent I’ve been very lucky and his doing amazing u wouldn’t even no without being told. I wish u all the best on your journey. They reference us to London and they scaned me and kept a close eye on him and now still do. His now 2 years old. They are very cleaver in what they can do now. I no how stressful and scary these can but go with your heart. If movement or anything changes just go for checks to help keep your mind at rest allso. Good luck x
Its called Heterotaxy Syndrome/Dextrocardia. Alone its no problem. If other heart defects are involved or other organs then thats when it can be tricky. Baby should be checked to see if there is a spleen, no spleen (Asplenia) or multiple Spleens (polysplenia)
My 13yr old has Heterotaxy Syndrome/ Dextrocardia but he also has multiple other complex heart defects,no spleen and a midline liver. His Dextrocardia is the one heart defect they worry about the least with him at this time.
Feel free to ask any questions
Hey friend, I would love to chat. Send me a message or a friend request.
You mean opposite side??
I have dextrocardia and a murmur.
I’m 30 years old. Lived a totally normal life and have 3, almost 4 kids, myself.
I went to a cardiologist yearly till I was full grown. Now I go every 3.
My EKGs have to be done backwards, and I love not telling people when I get a chest X-ray cuz they get excited when they “find”it. Lol Especially med students.
I do get fluttery from time to time. When I got Covid I had severe palpitations and low dips. But I’ve done good.
I stay active and it’s not held me back.
My son has his right aortic valve backward. We had to do weekly echos to keep an eye on it untill he was born. He lucky did not need surgery after he was born but said he may need it in the future, he is 15 months now and is as health as can be, he does have raspy breathing and a very hard time swallowing thick foods so he is on a liquid diet along with baby foods still. Also to add he has a heart murmur along with tracheal stenosis. Had a hole in his heart in the womb but luckily closed a week before he was born.
I have not experienced this so I can’t give an opinion. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this stress in your pregnancy. I hope it goes well. Positive thoughts & virtual hugs.
Elspeth Clayton would you be able to advise? Xx
It really does depend on exactly what you mean, as a backwards heart can mean a few things. My son has something called ccTGA which means the bottom part of his heart- the two ventricles are switched, the left Ventricle is on the right side and vice versa, he also has dextrocardia like others have described where the heart sits on the right side of the body as opposed to the left.
My best advice is to join some heart specific groups on here, they are a great source of help and support. The care you receive will depend where in the world you are. Feel free to pm me if you’d like to know more x
Idk but that sounds scary and I wish you lots of love and luck! Your baby will be ok no matter what happens keep having faith and gathering info.

My sister has it. She is 51 and has lived a normal life. Alone it isn’t an issue.
Probably transposition of the great arteries.
It all depends on what you are told when your baby gets an ultrasound but of course do follow your mommy instincts. I had 3 preemies and I always asked lots of questions and of course if you don’t feel comfortable you can always seek 2nd opinions. There is cardiologist specialized in babies. Enjoy your baby as much as possible and be there for them as much as well.
My son was born with congenital heart defects and has had 3 open heart surgeries plus others and several other diagnoses due to his heart defects. If you or anyone else needs to talk message me! My son is 12 and has double inlet left ventricle with transposition of the great arteries…he is a single ventricle post fontan, has eye sight issues and wears glasses, asthma, migraines, ENT issues and now something is going on with his liver and he will have surgery number 19 this summer. It is a scary challenge being a CHD mom to a CHD warrior!
I’m so excited now I can at least pay my bill and take good care of my family Thank you Mrs Lisa Jennifer for you have brought happiness to me and my family through your experiences in Cryptocurrency hit her dm on how to invest
Her physical heart is normal; you should see if your baby understands just as you do or do they match an other family members understanding, it’s most likely a psychology question.
One decision change my life! I decided to act on faith instead of fear. I’m now reaping the rewards of that bold step and making more money than I could even imagine all thanks to an amazing lady Your work speaks volumes of the kind of woman you are thank you so much for the profit you are really transparent to your investors
You inspired me during a difficult time when I needed word of encouragement. You really don’t know how much help you have rendered to me and my family thanks so much ma’am Your work speaks volumes of the kind of woman you are thank you so much for the profit
My sister found out in her 30’s her heart is backwards, never had a problem, never knew it.
My granddaughter was born with a backwards heart she is now 8. She does all sports it’s not stopping her from doing anything. And she’s very healthy.
Never heard of that, but just follow your doctor’s advice!
