What does it mean when you are meausuring small while pregnant?

Has anyone been told that they measured small when pregnant? I’m 27 weeks and was told today that I only measure at 23 weeks. They scheduled me for an ultrasound in 2 days, but I’m so nervous. Has anyone been through this? What were u told? What was the issue?

It can be just the fluid level or how the baby is laying, i was measuring 2 weeks behind until I hit 30 weeks then I all of a sudden measured a week ahead, but the ultrasound is a good way to just make sure

I was told this with my daughter and she and I were both totally ok! They just moved my due date further out and then she ended up coming on her original due date anyway.

My last son measured small the whole time. They said near my due date he was only measuring to be about 4lbs. They set induction up on August 2nd at 8am but on August 2nd at 4am he came by himself. He measured at 5lbs 7oz and hasn’t stopped growing. He is currently2 years old and 8lbs lighter than his 5 year old brother

I measured big with my 2nd and he came right on time and was 7lbs and my last I was measuring small and she was born at 40wks and was my biggest at 7lbs 2oz

Its called IUGR. I’ve been diagnosed 2xs. Both times baby was just small but super healthy. They should do weekly ultrasounds to keep an eye on the placenta and to make sure the umbilical cord is working right. My due date was never put off. In fact I was induced at 39w with my 5th for fear of placenta failing and repeat c-section with my 7th at 37w4d because my bo was high and I was spilling protein. My 5th weighed 5lbs 10oz (I was told that was like a 36weeker and she had no butt, looked like twigs coming out of a back. No fat basically) and my 7th weighed 6lbs 3oz. I think my 3rd would have been considered IUGR too because he was my smallest baby born at 37w 5lbs 1oz.

I’m measuring small currently at 33weeks. They want to induce me at 38weeks but I want to wait out and go naturally :pensive:

I measured small with all 3 of my kids. You could barely tell I was pregnant even in the 9th month. My babies were all over 6 lbs too. Don’t worry.

With my middle child I measured small, I also was so sick I did not gain one pound during pregnancy, instead pre pregnancy weight to post birth weight I had lost nearly 56 pounds. It is just a measurement of the baby bump, nothing to be too concerned about there are women out there that deliver healthy 9 pound babies that never look pregnant never get the “watermelon belly” there are also women who look huge far bigger than they should yet post birth are close to normal. Each body is different each pregnancy is different, they are only using averages with those measurements.

My oldest measured small the whole pregnancy but then at my 39 week ultrasound they told me he dropped a pound in a week. They scheduled me to be induced 2 days later. Turns out he was bigger than they measured the whole time. :woman_shrugging: It’s all guess work.

IUGR my youngest weighed 4lbs 5oz born full term completely healthy just tiny. Stopped growing at 32weeks.

My second daughter measured small up until she was born and even then was small. We simply went in every few weeks to make sure she wasn’t restricted. Meanwhile, I was eating protein as much as I could. She measures normally still at 20 months in 80 and 90 percentiles.

Your baby is maybe just smaller

Means nothing. I was small the whole time with my daughter and she came out fine. Came on her own at 39w and weighed over 7 pounds!

I measured small with my eldest, he was 9lb9oz

yes, it’s just how i carried my pregnancy. they got me so anxious i cried thinking i was doing something wrong and hurting my baby. he was perfectly healthy.

It could mean a lot of things. The ultrasound will give more answers and your midwife/ob will give you a better idea of what is going on and what to expect.

Intrauterine Growth Restriction is one possibility

I measured small with my two boys, my little girl I’m currently measuring big with. Ultrasound is just to double check fluids, baby etc. I wouldn’t be too worried. My 1st was born on his due date and was 6 pounds 2 ounces, 2nd was a week early and he was 7 pounds 7 ounces. Measurements aren’t always ideal that’s why they have you have ultrasound which honestly isn’t always on point either! They told me 3 days before my 2nd was born he was 5 pounds 2 ounces… he didn’t grow 2 pounds in 3 days!

I measured big. They always told me I was a week ahead. My son ended up being “5 weeks early” they go by your last period but it’s not an exact science. If what they say is true about the baby gaining a pound a week in the last month I would’ve given birth to a 10 pound baby. So who knows. My son was healthy despite being so early. You’ll get more answers at your ultrasound but try to remember your due date is just an estimate based on your last period. Good luck!

The measurements aren’t exact. And they had my due date wrong with my son. They said he was measuring small but they had the wrong due date to begin with.

I measured small right around same time i went all the way thru to 40 weeks exactly. And my baby was fine just smaller 6.2. A week before my due date they did schedule induction just incase i didnt go to get him out bc i was measuring small.

I measured small with both my babies, my first they never walked me through what happened but my second her umbilical cord was pinched so it cut off a lot of her nutrients. I did have to be induced with both my son was 5lb 9oz and my daughter was 5lb on the nose. The ultrasound will answer a lot of questions but remember baby is smaller on that.

Ive been thru the exact same thing… I was told i had placenta previa… Had my baby at 27weeks… she weighed 1 pound 0.2 oz when she was born… she spent 110 days in the nicu… Now she is happy and healthy and will be 2 yrs old in 4 months… Just have hope and stay calm… its super hard to stay calm ik. But u have to…

I measured small with all mine as well. Honestly it mostly has to do with what your size was before pregnant. If you’re on the smaller side, it’s not uncommon to measure smaller.

I measured small I was 6 weeks behind at my 30 week. So he “hadn’t grown” since 24 weeks …they told me that I was now high risk. They wanted to check me every week. And measure him every week. He inched along enough to satisfy the doctors but every week I was told to be prepared to get an emergency csection. His vitals were good. And he was barely growing…but was growing slightly. Ultimately my son was 5 days late.

I chose not to do amniocentesis. It was suggested I terminate. I did not.
He does have a genetic disorder that was discovered with genetic testing around 5 months old. This explains his small stature and scoliosis issues. He has had spine surgery. Things were unsure and scarey. A lot of testing occurred once he was here.

I’m telling you this, not to scare you, but to offer hope. My son beat medical odds and is thriving. He has impressed the medical community and continues to beat expectations. I trusted my gut. Your gut may be different.

We never plan for something to be wrong. We hope and pray for a healthy baby and pregnancy. I blamed myself for a long time.
But it is a miracle he is here and you are strong no matter the outcome. Sometimes things " arent perfect" or go as planned…
But we adapt. It might be scarey. I hope this offers you hope and peace. Things will turn out. There is support for you.

Yes I even when over my due date thry said she was going to be really small. But when she was born she was just the right size. So I wouldnt worrie to much

I measured small and lost weight during my pregnancy. Ultrasound will give a better idea of what’s going on if anything. All my ultrasounds (I was considered a geriatric pregnancy because I was 36) showed the baby was fine but my uterus is tilted. My daughter was born 5 weeks early (because I developed preeclampsia not because she was small) and weighed 5lbs 11oz

Yes my son was just small

I measured small with both my babies was high risk with my second as well and delivered 2 perfect babies both weighed 6lb 1oz. Don’t stress yourself out mama

I measured small through my entire pregnancy. My son was over due by 8 days (still measuring small at this point and they put notes all over my file saying that I was going to have a low birthweight baby) and he was 10lbs 12oz.

The ultrasound is to check to see if baby is measuring small or just you. It’s a good thing that they are following up on it. I didn’t measure small but my daughter did then entire pregnancy. She had IUGR, I was induced at 37 weeks and ended up needing a emergency c-section. She came out a nice healthy weight & height, and she’s always followed her own curve. She was in the less than 1% until she was 18 months old, then she got to the 3%, then at 2 years she is in the 15% for weight & 95% for height!! She’s just a tall skinny girl!
Just keep getting your check ups & take care! And don’t google!!!

Don’t worry yourself for both my girls I measured small and I actually lost weight after having both girls both my girls came out healthy so don’t worry :heart:it will be ok

Yes. They found out my placenta was “aging” ahead of the pregnancy, baby was diagnosed with IUGR. I had to get induced at 37w. She was born weighing 4lbs but healthy!

I was small too and my baby was born happy and healthy. Don’t worry yourself about something that you can’t change.

They changed my due date as well, and told me I would be lucky if she was 5lbs. She was almost 9lbs.

My son was measuring small at 32 weeks…at 38 week checkup I was still measuring small…so they all agreed to induce at 39 weeks. A Healthy 6lb 2oz later. All is good. Don’t stress🤗

I measured a month behind with my daughter for the last 9 weeks of my pregnancy. I was sent to a specialist for ultrasounds every week until she was born. She came out at 6lbs5oz at 39 weeks after being told she wouldnt be no more than 5 pounds!

I have been through this a week before I was induced (9days late) I was measuring 3 months small!!! I had an emergency ultrasound. They said my baby was fine and she was right where she needed to be (that she must have been in a odd position when measured) the ultrasound said she was going to be about 6 lbs 5 oz at birth. She came out 9 oz and 21 1/2 in long.

My second daughter was the complete opposite. My doctor was worried I was going to need a c section bc she was measuring big. Wanted me to be induced three weeks before my DD. But she the hospitals were overbooked ( ended up having her 11 days early) she weighed 8lbs8oz and was only 18 in long.

I measured small near the end of my second pregnancy. My son had IUGR. They were going to induce me but my water broke the next day at 36 weeks. He was perfectly healthy 5lbs 13oz.

At 37 weeks I measured 16 weeks. Was ordered an ultrasound and told to prepare to be induced. Got the ultrasound and baby was fine. Gained about 15lbs throughout my pregnancy. My baby came out perfectly healthy.

You could be having a small baby or you could not be as far along as you think

I was told at 28 weeks my baby was measuring at 25 wks. They never changed my due date. I had a scheduled c section. His birth weight was 7 lbs 7 oz 19.5 inches

I was told that. My sons due date was Feb 14th and in December they had told me he was measuring small so they had me going to check ups twice a week for the rest of my pregnancy and my son was 100% fine. He came on his due date on his own and was born 7lbs.

I was small with 2 of mine, I measured a few weeks smaller than I should have and they were both born a week early, they were both just above 6lbs

My son was supposedly measuring 3-4weeks ahead. He was born at 36 weeks weighing 6lbs (when they said he was roughly 8lbs) my daughter was measuring small but even being born at 34 weeks she was 5lbs 13oz

I measured small with my daughter, everyone told me it was because I was small it made sense my bump was smallish, I did pop out by the end and felt huge so I wouldn’t worry, my daughter weighed just under 7 pounds so she was completely healthy and had a normal weight x

They kept telling me when I was pregnant that my son was measuring big, that his head was big and I had to have multiple ultrasounds…he is absolutely perfect! He weighed 8lbs 12.6oz at birth and there’s nothing wrong with him, remember it’s a prediction…ultrasounds aren’t exact! Don’t stress or be scared!

Dont be nervous! Dont let what they tell you interrupt you enjoying your pregnancy. Ive had 8 children my oldest is 16 my youngest is 2 weeks old. They always wanna give their opinions on someone’s child. Just wait til your child is born to see what God gave you, bet he or she will be perfect!

I went full term with my son and the docs told me the day b4 he was 7 and a half pounds he actually was 6lb 4 and perfect (hes now 16 and 6ft1 weighs around 155 lbs!) Try not to worry Its good they are monitoring you carefully but they dont know everything good luck!

I have always measured small. My back curves out instead of in, and my uterus rests back there, so they underestimated the size of all my babies. The smallest one was 7lb2oz.

Completely normal. It could be anything from dates being off to just having a small babe :slightly_smiling_face: congrats on the little bundle of joy :star_struck:

Yes I measured small and had an ultrasound and the ultrasound showed i was low on amniotic fluid and I ended up getting induced BUT I was 38 weeks measuring 36 if I remember correctly so I was further along then you and it could be something else. Just wait for the ultrasound and try not to worry little one could be little is all

I measured small both pregnancies. My son stopped growing at 35 weeks so they took him at 36 weeks and he was totally fine, weighed 5 pounds even, everything was developed. Don’t worry, pray, hope and trust  blessings to you and baby

I measured small with my boys. They were so far back I didn’t even show until 17 weeks with my first and 15 weeks with my second. Some people measure small and some people measure ahead. I wouldn’t worry at all.

It’s called intrauterine growth restricted I had it with my son and he had to
Come out via emergency c-section at 36 weeks exactly due to complications with myself he weighed 3lbs 10 oz they will probably do weekly Doppler scans just to keep an eye on the baby’s growth. The only reason I was growth restricted was because of the elevation in Colorado.

I measured small in both my pregnancies, probably only gaining about 25lbs each pregnancy. Both babies were born healthy and a healthy weight. Don’t worry :slightly_smiling_face:

They told me the same thing with my son all throughout my pregnancy( I was only 100lbs pre-preg and only gained 15 lbs). I was ALL baby. They scheduled 4/5 extra ultrasounds throughout because my baby was measuring a month behind. I had him at exactly 40 weeks and he weights 7lbs 12oz and as healthy as could be

I measured small for both my pregnancies and I had small babies. I only gained 15lbs with my first and 17 with my second. It just means they either calculated your due date wrong or you have a small baby.

They either think you’re not as far along as you thought, baby could be sitting back farther depending on your pelvis (which isn’t a big deal), or the baby might be on the small side, but chances are there’s no issues. I usually measure 2 weeks “small” throughout all 4 pregnancies and 3 of them were overdue and my last was born the day before her due date. All in the 7lb range.

They got me a emergency scan because " my bump was measuring small" and went for ultrasound they said 6lbs he was born 8lbs 2oz lol

Happened to me also with both of my babies when I got my scan they were perfectly fine xx

This happened with all 3 of my babies. With my first i was told I’d be lucky if she 6lb when born, not even 12hrs later I gave birth and she was 7lb 6oz. With my other 2 I was always 4-6 weeks behind with my measurements and both were decent size when born (7lb 15oz and 7lb 9oz)

My bump measured behind my whole pregnancy with my first . We had multiple growth scans and they said she may be a smaller birth weight…NOPE 7.5lb baby girl lol born completely average in weight

You could be carrying more in the back.

Yes. I gained a small 7kg while pregnant and lost 4 just before I had him. Was told at 32 weeks that he would be born between 3-4lbs. He was born at 38+2 and was 6lbs.

My son measured right until 30 weeks. When I was 41 weeks he was still measuring 32. He was born PERFECTLY healthy, just small. He didn’t fit into newborns right until 2 months old. He was in premies but was delivered late. You may just have a teenybeeby! Don’t stress!

I measured big with my son, he was 7lbs 6oz… I measured small with my daughter, she was 9lbs 14oz

Honestly, I take sizing with a “grain of salt”, unless there are health reasons why your lo might be small.

On an ultrasound they noticed my son was measuring small. They continued to do cord dopplers and weekly ultrasounds. The said it was UIGR as he was measuring 3 weeks behind. I had conflicting opinions and at a specialist appointment I was then taken to the hospital only to have my son at 29 weeks, weighing 2lbs. He spent 100 days in the NICU. I was very scared, confused and in denial. Just get yourself mentally prepared for any scenario. I thought nothing was wrong all along and was in shock at how quickly things turned. I wish you nothing but the best.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR! And the worst thing you can do is stress.

Hahah i was told my son was measuring small. Becuse I had gestational diabetes i cant go over my due date so they induced me 4 days before we was 8lb 9oz they have no idea if they are big or small lol

Personally, first baby so I have no other input. I was measuring small, I’m a tiny person, they sent me to a specialist for ultrasounds. I went in for my 3rd appointment with them at 36 weeks 4 days. My body wasn’t handling the baby well and we had an emergency c section that day, they also diagnosed me with pre-eclampsia. The baby is still small but absolutely healthy, just a pain trying to fatten him up to where he should be.

Been there . My baby was fine and so was I.

I think you should follow your dr’s orders and be glad that there is testing available that can help decide that your pregnancy is indeed progressing well-if your insurance co. approves the order you can be sure there is proper protocol to check out the progress of your growing infant-that you don’t have to wait to find out the indicators of a possible problem! I will say that, alltho, Ultrasounds have improved in accuracy, your dr may find he or she needs further testing!

Yes I was told that with my second child. They may have given you a list for you to gain weight or they may ask you to keep a log of all your food intake and calorie intake. If you continue to measure small which my friend did the medical staff called the social service worker to report possible in home abuse. Just letting you know what’s may happen if your habits don’t change

The EXACT date you get pregnant is NOT a science. It happens when it happens. Just listen to your OB/GYN and look towards the future.

Got to ask what does this mean?

Both of mine were measuring small, but I had bad morning sickness and didn’t gain any weight. We had regular checks and nothing was ever wrong. I had one 1week early and the other 3weeks early (not because off the babies, they were fine) they came full of life and healthy. Unless they give you something to go off, please don’t worry and let it sit on your mind… And congratulations!

I measured small at my 20 week ultrasound, turns out I was at 18 weeks :upside_down_face: later on I was measuring small but he was on my back n my whole labour was a back labour
