Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common, highly contagious viral illness that affects children, especially those under the age of 10. It’s characterized by:

  1. Red spots or blisters on the hands and feet
  2. Sores or ulcers in the mouth
  3. Fever
  4. Sore throat
  5. Reduced appetite

HFMD is usually caused by the Coxsackievirus A16, but other viruses can also cause it. It’s spread through:

  • Direct contact with an infected person’s:
    • Saliva
    • Mucus
    • Feces
  • Indirect contact with contaminated surfaces or objects

There’s no specific treatment, but symptoms can be managed with:

  • Rest
  • Fluids
  • Pain relief medication
  • Topical creams for skin irritation

Most children recover within 7-10 days. If you suspect your child has HFMD, consult a healthcare professional for guidance.

My oldest had it at 8 years old (on top of mono that he got from school), nothing much helped the rash on his feet but there was a mix suggested to us by his doctor for the mouth sores, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was now, both things were OTC, I just can’t think of what they were because it’s been about 6 years. I would ask your kiddos Pedi about it and see if they can tell you what to use if kiddo has the mouth rash, that is. The feet rash made him not want to walk and he wasn’t doing much of that anyways with the mono. My 2nd never got it and my 5 month old so far (:crossed_fingers:) hasnt gotten it either. It really just has to run its course. I couldn’t tell you whether it affected my son too much more than the rash because of having mono as well that already had him pretty wiped and miserable.

Popsicles and hydration, soups nothing salty, calamine lotion can help and Tylenol but honestly not really much other than letting it run its course
