What is your weekly budget?

What is your weekly budget for groceries/toiletries/laundry/gas for the car/ diapers/formula/baby food/clothing (baby always needs bigger sizes)? My husband is upset I’m having trouble managing with $200 a week. I need tips and tricks, anything!

It depends on what we need grocery wise. But some weeks we spend 200 on groceries alone for a family of 3. However I will also state that I tend to buy a lot of meat if it is something we use often and it’s a good price.

Depends really on the week. We are a family of 3 and 190 dollars has lasted us 3 weeks now.
My husband and I also are on the Keto diet so we don’t eat a crazy amount of eat.

There is 7 of us and it’s $150 a week.

It is impossible to limit all of those things to $200.00. I think $400.00 is a much more realistic budget.

Go on FB market and buy your babes used clothing. You get a huge hauls for dirt cheap, plus you can get good used condition toys as well, saves alot of money. Depending how much your baby eats, buy 2 things of formula, will or should last a month

80 to 100 a week. Family of 6 update nvm that was just for groceries and shampoo laundry detergent etc.

We spend 150$ on gas and groceries a week.

Depends on the size of your household… but list out how much all the baby stuff costs and how much you use, gas, and groceries separately. You can’t just set a 200$ budget without being realistic about the actual cost of things and what you need.

We spend around $100 on groceries to last us 3 a week. I buy in bulk that way I dont run out as fast. $30 for gas (that’s dependent on your vehicle) and then around $50 for diapers, wipes, formula and baby food.

:joy::joy: every week, I put $40 in gas, at least $150 in groceries, 3 big cans of formula every 2-3 weeks ($36 each), and right now since baby is gonna be in size 3 diapers for a while, I will get a big box of diapers once a week to stock up ($25). We are a family of 3, baby will be 5 months on the 16th

Coupon! It helps tremendously. Buy the big boxes of diapers each month instead of small packs its cheaper that way. I don’t really have a budget though but for our family of 5 we spend about 500 a month on just groceries alone. :woman_shrugging:

Buy second hand off buy and sell groups for baby stuff! People are always selling or giving away that stuff!

Groceries, I do dollar stores for snacks and packages goods, toiletries. Amazon is also a great thing to utilize!

I can usually make $200 last 2 weeks with 5 kids and myself.

Buy bigger boxes of diapers/wipes so you dont have to everytime.

For us it varies by week. My kids are out of diapers/formula so that helps so much. But you can always invest in cloth diapers. Use grocery store gas stations like Kroger so you can use fuel points. Get a deep freezer and stock up when they have a meat sale. Etc

After bills and stuff I normally have about $80-$100 left for a week and it lasts.

Depends where you live, since cost of living varies greatly. I would focus on a monthly budget so you can buy in bulk, instead of weekly

Go to a store like Aldi for groceries and paper products… get hand me downs from friends and relatives for clothes. So many people are looking to get rid of the clothes from their kids to declutter, take them!

$200 per week seems like a ton, but maybe that varies by where you live. In Ohio that would be way more than enough per week to take care of our family and dogs for everything you listed and we eat very healthy.

Dont eat out, cook from scratch! That will save a bunch.

Let’s see… I’ve never actually figured this out…

$120 month phones
$185 month mortgage
$100 month taxes
$150 week gas
$500 month food
$100 month cleaning/totlietries

Basically I am a extreme couponer and I still struggle. I also have twin 8 year old girls and 4 year old son, fiance, and myself my. Also can’t forget all our pets. We run a small rabbit farm.

We spend about 275/300$ just in groceries a week, then 140$ in each truck a week for gas.

Cook from scratch at home , make cakes , pies , and cookies for snacks . Stretch meals with lots of vegetables

Kid stuff is expensive but you don’t have to get new things, if your kid is growing so fast that you are having to replace clothes even every month, go to a thrift store or consignment shop to buy them. Then when the kid grows out of it you take it back to the consignment shop and trade in for new stuff. Food is had because you have to buy when the sales are, but if you communicate that to you husband and say I need an extra $100 this week so we can get twice as much meat or whatever, he should be good giving you more this week and less next week. Diapers don’t need to be the expensive ones, same with wipes. I always got Luvs since they were the cheapest next to generic and whatever wipes were on sale was what we got. Laundry costs depend on if you are doing it at home or at a laundromat…but again, you don’t have to buy the most expensive soap and softener. For my son and I, I would spend about $20 every other week at the laundromat and a $20 container of tide pods lasted 2-3 months. I guess my biggest suggestion would be to sit down figure out how much you are spending on things, cut what and where you can and then let your husband know that you can do it on $250 a week or whatever it is.

If you can do all that on 200 a week props to you lol

But for clothes check Facebook marketplace any used clothing stores etc. it’s not a bad thing to buy used baby clothes since they grow so fast

200 isnt that bad… for 4 of us I spend around 100 in groceries but that’s with trying to be careful about how much I spend lol otherwise I spend more cuz I’m big on getting lots of fruit which gets pricey

We have two adults and and two children ages 4&8 and we only spend $250 a month :flushed::flushed:

I have $300 a week for everything and it doesn’t get us more than 2-3 days. I feel your struggle. So hard!

Buy the baby clothes at Goodwill. If you look them over some of them are really good, kids don’t wear their clothes very long before they grow out of them so what’s the big deal if they’ve already been used.

I do think 200 is doable we spend that much on a family of 5 on grocery’s and ect and I would buy baby clothes used I mean honestly babies like you say grow out of them so fast usually gently used are brand new

A week -
150-200 food
Diapers 2 kids 60 $
Formula 40$
Gas 50 $
Toilet paper 15 $
Laundry 20 $
Clothes you should buy the next size up
I dont think for some families 200 a week is doable, some ppl will say that’s more than enough but every situation is different

Groceries for my 4 person household I spend maybe $150, not including $20 in formula about every week and a half, gas is $25-40 a week… and I have yet to have to buy diapers yet bc I had quite the stockpile from my baby shower

Use Ibotta and fetch rewards! It’s not a ton of cash back but it makes me feel better when I spend $200 at the grocery store and get $5-10 back each week!

If I could afford it I would spend over $200 on groceries a week. My kids eat me out of house and home. Make him do the bills and let him see how everything costs. That will change his mindset.

I spend 1200 a month and do all my shopping between Kroger, Costco, local butcher, local fresh veg/fruit place. I have a soon to be family of 6. But that includes toiletry items, cleaning supplies, groceries (mostly organic/paleo) dog/cat food & Huggies. I spend about 200 on gas a month. So 1400/4=350 a week for 3 boys, my husband, myself (pregnant) two large dogs and a cat.

My budget is 200 a month for food, for a family of 4. I don’t use my heater/air-conditioning so my electric bill is about 65-75$ a month. I don’t have diapers or formula to by. I only by clothes second hand, and my monthly rent is 800 a month for a 500 square foot apartment. And I share a phone with my brother.

Grocery bill is $160-$250 every two weeks. I spend $60 in gas every two weeks. My grocery bill includes toiletries, laundry soap, etc. I meal plan and I find that helps me a lot. Also, if we don’t need it- I don’t get it. For baby clothes, I buy off Facebook when I need to. I usually buy an entire season at once for each kid. My oldest two wear uniforms to school so that’s about $300 a year seeing how I have to purchase both warm and cold weather clothes.

If possible shop target… I did all the comparisons with household stuff and they out beat Walmart hands down… they will do mix and match for household stuff and give you gift cards back… sometimes the stuff is on sale too. Baby stuff is a winner too… spend $100 on diapers , wipes, formulas ect and get $20 gift card. Stock up when possible

Much of this is not a weekly expense, such as toiletries, clothes. The rest is manageable at 200 a week, if shopping wisely.

$200 a week? How many kids? I mean it is doable.

There are already a lot of good tips here but I would add buy your meat and bulk and on sale and freeze it. Meal planning is key to efficient and affordable grocery shopping. And generics are just as good as name brands. Shop around for deals on diapers. I got a great deal at Target that included getting a $30 gift card.

When you make dinners freeze half for another nights dinner. Were not very good about eating left overs so freezing the rest for another dinner has helped a lot. Whether theres enough for a whole meal or leftovers to add to making another meal. Like if you made meatballs and spaghetti I always keep things separated. So I can use left over meatballs into meatball subs or swedish meatballs or just with gravy and mashed potatoes. Or if you made beef you can use left over in a stew or beef tips and gravy. Meatloaf can be turned into meat in spaghetti sauce. Chicken can be made into sandwiches, or chicken gravy over potatoes or rice or made into a casserole. If you’re buying diapers and stuff. I use training pants type things at home and disposable diapers for on the go. Saves a ton of money on buying diapers. I use warm wash cloths instead of wipes for just wet diapers at home. And I use some wipes to get most of the poopy bottom cleaned up but then warm wash cloth for the rest. Saves on so many wipes. I use dawn dish soap platinum kind instead of expensive stain removers in laundry works great and on baby clothes! I hang up clothes and blankets then fluff in dryer saves on electricity. I do in home garden growing veggies that my kids will snack on and that we can use for dinners. I hope you’ll find lots of helpful ideas from everyone on here. :slightly_smiling_face:

So you have about $800 for all of those things. That seems doable. We have $400 for consumables, $60 for gas, $30 for kids clothes a month. We cloth diaper and bf but I imagine formula and diapers are at least another $200 a month. Can you join a bulk store to buy diapers and food? Gas is normally cheaper there too. We always sell the clothes he outgrew to buy new clothes and it cuts the cost down by at least 30%.

I buy fruits/vegetables at farmers market tend to be cheaper and you get more. As for baby clothes buy bigger size. Diapers buy at bjs. A little trick depends on the brand you use call their customer service let them know that you’re interested in trying their product ask for coupons.
Also get gas from bjs or Costco and cut back on unnecessary trips. I spend roughly 250 on a family of 6. Use coupons

Formula/diapers/wipes $50 a week groceries for two adults $125 a week, gas for two vehicles $100 a week, toiletries and house needs (detergent,tp etc.-$50 a week)

My food budget is around $150 a week. I feel 2 adult men, myself, a toddler and a baby.

I get my diapers from Walmart or Costco, so they’re around $30 every month or less. Wipes are also from Walmart ($20 a month)

We put gas in our truck maybe 3 times a month, around $100 each time. Sometimes it’s less.

I buy a lot of my stuff in bulk from Walmart because I live in a small town and buying laundry soap/toiletries are too expensive here. (For example, a 32 pack of tide laundry pods are $15 here in my town but a 72 pack of them is $20 at Walmat)

Each week is different for us

Depends on groceries but buy bulk toilet paper and those type of things… go to a second hand store for baby clothes. Laundry shouldn’t be expensive if you do it yourself…

Coupons will be your best friend. Download the apps to the stores that you shop at and connect your membership card to the app. It will upload the coupons, and when you check out just enter in your phone number. Also check out some apps where you can get cash back for shopping. Maybe see if WIC is available in your area. I suggest memberships to stores like costco, sam’s club etc. buy in bulk, it will cost you more upfront, but will last you so much longer & save way more money in the long run. Get the sunday paper and compare which stores have cheaper items to save money. Takes work, but will definitely help you out!

Gas is $70 a month just for my car
Grocery’s $250 for the two of us a month
(Haven’t had to buy formula yet or restock on diapers, will be having my baby soon though!)
But if so I’d try to budget about $150 on diapers and baby formula… luckily I have a ton of cloths from family and friends so she’s good in the cloths department lol

i buy my diapers online for 5o a month i also got diaper coupons from going to the diaper websites

There are 2 adults and we have a 3 year old boy. My budget has always been about 100 a week. I meal plan. Like this week, monday is taco chops with rice and black beans and salad. Tuesday is cheddar sausages and fries with salad. Wednesday is meatballs using left over spaghetti sauce from last week, the other half of the bag of fries and salad. Thursday is a ground meat concoction with canned soup and veggies and salad and Friday is left overs. Saturday is chicken and noodles. I also buy lunch stuff for the 2 guys, yogurts for me, milk, tea and coke and juice and bottled water every week and I eat left overs for lunch. I buy pull ups every other week and once a month is the paper goods

I spend 150 biweekly its doable if manage it I make only home cooked meals

I make it wrk under 35 dollars a week sometimes… I have 2 older kids and 1 baby.
200 is a great amount for a week. Cook meals you can make leftovers out of and plan to eat it for lunch or again in a few days. If you dont have to drive to a place, don’t.
Don’t obsess over the budget you’ll drive yourself nuts. But try to have the mindset that even if you have 200 in the bank- you really dont. Or put a $ goal into saving a certain amount for a trip or fam event

We currently spend About 250 for food for 2 wks, I don’t necessarily plan meals, but I buy a lot of bulk and make a lot of non meat meals or change stuff up. I only buy toiletries maybe 1x a month that’s about $15. Clothes I second hand shop for the most part or clearance but that shouldn’t be an every week thing. Laundry soap is 1every 2 months , diapers i buy the biggest box and it lasts a month at least but my daughter is fixing to start potty training. If you have a sams club or a Costco go there 1 week and stock up on bulk and 200 will be easy a week

So so let’s break it down. Walmart has diapers 328 size 3…I’m not sure how big/small your little is for 37$.
Laundry soap 140 loads for 10$. Toilet paper 20$ for 18 mega rolls which is equivalent to about 72 regular rolls. Shampoo/conditioner shouldn’t be emptying full containers in a week. Meal plan and shop sales. I have a 23 year old son, my 3 year old daughter and myself, and can feed us for less than 10$ a meal (dinner/supper whichever you call it). I for example just got a 4lb whole chicken for around 2.50 because they are 49 cents a lb. I got 3lbs of hamburger for 8$ bc it was roughly 2.49/lb. Depending on your area and food costs, meal plans are fantastic! We spend on avg less then 300$/mo on groceries and I almost always meal plan.
Spag sauce - 3$
Spag noodles - 49 cents on sale
Hamburger - we break down and freeze but it avgs about 2$
6$ roughly divided by 3 people and I just fed us for 2$ a person.
If you can take time to break it all down, you’ll do great at shopping! 800/mo “spending” money is a nice cushion, but shouldn’t be overly done.
Clothes? Depending on how you feel about thrift stores or used clothes. I had 2 boys before my daughter so nico hand me downs, but. I love thrift stores. They have tag weeks and that saves me a bundle! She isn’t gna outgrow clothes very single week…so look for sales and maybe buy a bit bigger size since littles grow faster under a year old.
Gas in my van costs me 20$/wk at 2 45 a gal, but I don’t drive far. My mum has a Malibu and she lives 20 min from her job and spends about 45$/week. Idk what gas is there but we rarely let our tank get under a quarter bc it gets better gas mileage that way.
Hope this long post helps!

$200 a week/$800 a month, is plenty to get the stuff you listed. Shop sales, use coupons. Many people have to manage on 200 a month for those items. Your husband is right to be frustrated with you, your trying to spend above your means…

I spend about 30$ a week at least at the laundromat… :expressionless: that can add up

I would join Costco or sams club.
Have a bulk shopping trip with the hubby every other month. Tp,paper towel, laundry soap/softener, any other cleaners you use.
Every month Get diapers/wipes, formula x2 or 3.

That way your good on those things.
You won’t have to stress on fitting those things into your 200 budget

For my family on 6 I go thru 800 for food and gas.

Search all the grocery stores for sales. At places like lowes/foodking etc you can find really good deals on meat sometimes. Leg quarters 33c a lb, pork roast 88c a lb, pork ribs 1.67 a lb etc.

I have about $200-$150 per week and I just do things weekly. Like I’ll do diapers and wipes one week, grocery’s the next, and toiletries the next. Obviously sometimes I have to get extra things but for the most part that’s how we make it work so we don’t have a $600 shopping trip in one…

My grocery expense depends on what is leftover after I pay Bill’s. sometimes its 80, sometimes its 20. But Bill’s are important

I do a monthly groceries shop, I spend $250 a month on groceries.
$150 on gas a month.
And toiletries etc come out of my grocery funds.
My kids clothes I buy second hand off of Facebook :woman_shrugging:t2: and the odd time we buy new.
Also diapers I spend $150 a month on

I think it helps to know what country you’re in. Canada seems to be more expensive than the US- in my experience.

Mine is over 200 a week. Lol. 4 people, my boys eat like grown men, and we have 4 animals and a car.
So…he should calm down.
Maybe try to look for coupons or buy in bulk for certain things (toilet paper, laundry soap cleaner etc for example).
Try to meal plan. I like cooking fresh. I try real hard to stay away from processed foods. Not always, but I try.
Some weeks I sit at about 180, and other weeks I hit about 250. Depends.
When u go to the store, make a list so it’s more organized, that way your not just grabbing stuff.
Make a list and stick to it. Most important things at the top of course.

Depends on where you buy. How much you buy etc.

If we are fasting for Lent then generally our grocery bill is next to nothing because I Homestead in our apartment. I also make our bread. Homemade bread is pretty easy and goes a lot further than store bought. Toiletries are pretty easy because you can use dr. Bronner’s for detergent and dishes and body wash. As far as face wash goes honey works just fine and baking soda my hair does great with. We are military so we go to the Navy NEX for gas which puts our budget and only about $10 a week maybe for gas… diapers and wipes is not included in our budget because I cloth diaper and cloth wipe as well. Formula was never on our list either because I breastfed so I don’t know about any tips or tricks for that regarding formula. Where baby food is concerned if you do baby LED weaning then that’s pretty much self-explanatory but I did hear Raise and I would puree whatever we were eating and just a blender and it works fine. She only drinks water as of right now when she gets her juice from fruits that I grow. As far as baby clothes go I always just hit up consignment stores or yard sales or even do it by nothing post for them I probably spent a total of $150 for all of my kids clothes and she’s just over a year old now. Our weekly budget is probably around 60 or 70 but that’s only because I am the most extremely Frugal person that I know and I have tips and tricks that were passed on from older Generations when they didn’t have reusable this send disposable that because that’s where a lot of our money goes.

We do 350-400 a month so 100ish a week.

Use coupons as much as possible, buy in bulk for non-perishable stuff and items like toilet paper and laundry soap, and do meal planning. I try to cook things that the leftovers can be repurposed(pot roast turned into veggie soup, meat loaf turned into spaghetti meat, etc?) Also try buying diapers and toiletries, and cleaning stuff one week, groceries every other week, and budget for gas for the month on the off week.

I’m moving to wherever it is to live 200 a week lol house of 4 living in ct . We are taxed too death here.

Have him try to make it on 200 $week ,See if it can be done .

I didn’t see any mention of thrift stores. Take it home, wash it, use it!

100 to 120 on grocries family of 4. We have 1 baby in diapers and we go threw the 25 dollar box in 2 weeks 20 on laundry a week and about 60 in gas. Thats not including all our other expenses which add to about 50 to 100 depending if we need dog food cat food toliet paper paper towels etc. So we are def closer to 300 a week. If your doing it for 200 good for you! Teach me!

It depends on family size and where you live. For my family of 4 I spend about $150 a week on all that stuff in Phoenix. If I lived in New Jersey (where I grew up) $150 would be less than half of what I’d need. Our meals run about $7 a night for dinner from the grocery store (including meat). I hit managers special for all of my meat and buy on sale. We have had a tight budget for a long time so I’ve learned to shop smart.
Some tips and tricks:
use coupons, not necessarily crazy couponing, but see if your grocery store has an app for digital coupons.
Shop the managers special, closeout and clearance.
Dont buy all brand name, get store brand whenever you can.
For clothing buy second hand when you can, (not for undies or socks)
Go on sale days, for example if a store is having a 20% off sale on saturday and sunday, go then.
Buy in bulk so your items last longer.

We have 4 and make $300 last for groceries for 2 weeks that includes household I’m also dairy soy and meat free  vegetarian:)

Groceries for my family if 3 is usually 120-140 for 7-9 days. I gas up $25 a day when I work my husband does 35 a week.

I go to Sams club and buy the big box of toilet paper and the big dish soap isnt expensive its $4 and it can last 2-3 months and as far as body soap and laundry soap I’m lucky we get ours free…but groceries we spend almost $700 a month for 4 people and thats if we have parties then the food last longer cuz I dont cook…plus get WIC from the baby…

First is where you live, buy and for how many people. I feel that all need to take in account. Even if you have a child who has to eat certain foods. Our monthly food/extra household stuff bill is $700, max $750 for a family of 7. We live in Jersey, not far from NYC so it’s cheap but can be costly

Sams club/Costco& Amazon Prime/Subscribe and Save/Prime Pantry.

I have me, my husband, and 3 little ones, I spend about 200-250 every 2 weeks in all of our family shopping! Keep an eye out for deals love they’re lifesaving, brand names aren’t as important as they seem. Gonna spend a little more for Halloween stuff this upcoming week!!!

That’s not enough if you have to buy formula as well. Can you get WIC? Or can you get coupons from your pediatrician and free samples from them as well? Our pediatrician tells us to never buy formula to always get it from them bc they have so much that they throw it away. They are always being given samples by the makers of the formula. Also I have a Sam’s Club membership. Diapers are 10 cents cheaper per diaper there. So at Walmart if I bought the Huggies they would be 23¢ each at Sam’s they are 13¢ each. It makes a big difference when buying for the month. I’ve also found that I save between $1.00 and up to $11.00 on almost every item I buy there. I buy my kids clothes on clearance there and they get as cheap as $1.81 for Carter’s three piece outfits.
But if your not getting WIC or food stamps then no $200 a week is not enough for everything.

Holy crap you’re struggling with 200 a WEEK?! Dude if we had 200 a week for non bills we’d be set in my family. We barely have 60 every 2 weeks and my husband works full time. I completely get how your husband is upset you can’t manage with 200 a week. Though I do suppose it depends on your family size and where you live but still 200 a week is a lot for a lot of people. You have to trim down what you want from what you NEED. If it’s not 100% necessary don’t get it. Find bargains and search clearance. You might have to sacrifice name brand for off brand so you can get more without spending more. Plan out your meals so you know what to get at the store. Set a budget for how much you want to spend MAXIMUM and write down the prices of everything then add it up BEFORE you get to check out - if you’ve gone over your budget reevaluate what’s in your cart that you don’t NEED right then. You have to buckle down and stick to any budget you make or it won’t matter in the end.
