What should I do about my sick kindergartener?

It’s the first week of school and my kindergartener is already sick. He has a runny nose and a little cough. Is he still able to go? Should I ask his teacher? Where I live if he misses more than 12 days out of the school year (excused or not) I have to go to court

If he doesn’t have a fever and feels ok I would send him. With. Wing that young he honestly will probably be sick most of the year

That is why ur child is sick because another parent sent their kid sick they do not have a fever then take him I always do and let the nurse excuse him to come back home. Or make sure to have them visit the - urgent care or primary get doctors excuse - to have ur records when they do this! Its hard - teachers go work sick Its going to happen allot now - my doctor would say I built my kids immune system with them being in daycare since 6 weeks old but honestly germs are germs. The flu, stomach bugs, colds etc I always have took my kids bath as soon as they came home and remind him to wash their hands all the time at school. Wish the teachers would wipe down occasionally but some maybe will do a wipe down on Fridays.

I only make my kids stay home if they are fevered

I send my kids unless they have a fever. Cough is from post nasal drip

I , as a fellow parent , appreciate it when people don’t send their sick kids to school and my kids bring it home and get all of us sick also.

Thats insane that you’d have to go to court for missed school. Like you birthed the kid you do what you see fit with them.

Unfortunately it’s going to happen a lot, it’s a very hard line because the school doesn’t want them to miss, but doesn’t want them at school sick… but if you keep them home for every runny nose and cough they will be home a lot!! And this will be the start of the COVID babies going to school so their immune systems are not built up so they are going to get sick a lot and very easily!!

Kids always get a little funk from back to school. All those kids ate exposing eachother to new germs. It’s normal.

send him to school. If the child doesn’t have a fever, he is not contagious. just make his teacher aware of your concern and hopefully, they help your little one with hand sanitizer and hand washing for the next few days.

Test for covid and if no covid or no fever then the school protocol is the child can go to school.

Here it’s only if they have s fever they hsve to stay home. My kids hsve allergies so they sneeze and cough s lol but aren’t sick but if your kid is sick I agree keep them home not fair to the other kids

Get vitamin c and teach how to wash hands and if someone is sick stand away from them just like with covid the teachers did wash down the area they sat at daily they even had the kids take turns doing it give your kids hand sanitizer to wear on their pants or put in their cubby most teachers has it on their desk as well

If he isn’t feverish send him give him some allergy medicine for now get him to doctor asap before it progresses worse

Send him. My son only stays home with a high fever or “it” coming out of both ends. If I kept him home for every sniffle he would miss half the year. That’s what happens when kids are around other kids.

Ugh. That Kindergarten year is TOUGH. My boy missed two weeks total last year due to sickness. Defintley call your school and ask if they have policies regarding different illnesses. For colds, as long as they don’t have a fever and feel well enough to attend then they can.

If he is sick, do not send to school. Even if he doesn’t have a fever, you can be contagious before symptoms such as a fever are present…the incubation period.

Take a breath.

  1. take his temperature…is it over 100? He stays home. If it’s under…
  2. How is he acting otherwise? Is he eating? Drinking? Maintaining relatively normal energy level? If no then keep him home. If yes…
  3. does he have seasonal allergies? Is he sensitive to cleaning products or perfumes? If yes. Consider that may be the issue. It’s allergy season here But I know the cleaning supplies and perfumes and stuff can cause stuffy nose and cough especially when they’re just simply not use to them.

Me: I send my kiddos unless fever, vomiting or they are too sick to function. I always tell me kid, if you feel real bad after and hour ask to see the nurse, I can always come get you.

I would call the school and ask them. Personally I keep my kid home when sick you never know what another kid is going through they could have weak immune system and what’s just a cold for your child could be deadly to another child. If you do send is it possible to mask your kid so it doesn’t spread I know he is in kindergarten but it can be taught

The rule with my kids if you’re not throwing up or running a fever you’re going to school

Send him. Unless he has a fever they’re going to say send him. Don’t ask how I know :woman_facepalming::joy:. My state aka Iowa made a new school policy and it sucks :rage: this is word from word from the email we got this year

Beginning this school year, we will be implementing the following attendance policy across all schools.

If a student is absent for 10% of a grading period or of the entire school year, their parent/guardian will receive a letter from the school.

If a student is absent for 15% of a grading period or of the entire school year, their parent/guardian will be required to attend a Student Success Meeting with the building administrator.

If a student is absent for 20% of a grading period or of the entire school year, the student and a parent/guardian will be required to attend a Student Success Meeting with the building administrator and county attorney.

The rules our school told us to follow:
Keep them home if…fever, vomiting/ diarrhea, lethargic. Otherwise send them.

Somebody on here already beat me to it. It’s not just about your kid being sick. What if you’re sick kid bring something to school and there’s a classmate with an autoimmune condition. You’ve now likely made them very sick and they’re gonna be sick for quite a while. Or, a kid could have a parent/grandparent whoever at home with cancer and it’s also gonna make them very sick. Your idea sounds wonderful. But it’s not just your kid involved.

No fever for 24 hours without meds, throwing up or diarrhea send to school.

They won’t get immune to crap of you don’t expose them to crap… . My kids were sick quite a bit in kindergarten. It will get better. They can go to school like that just make sure hand washing is a thing you push

My sons school is they can go unless fever or vomiting. I’d love the keep my son home when sick but they are annoying with truancy. They basically want them in school no matter what.

Long as no fever school wants them there

It sounds like allergies. He’s fine. Kids get sick. That sounds like my son with allergies. As long as there’s no fever he can go to school.

No fever, vomit or diarrhea they go to school.

Policies like this is why kids get sick so often from school. Parents send kids sick for fear of retaliation from school. Then spread it. These policies aren’t about the kids education or best interest. It’s because schools get money based on attendance. This lines the administration & boards pockets. Kids suffer, teachers suffer but it’s all good because the already wealthy win.

It’s most likely a scare tactic. My kid missed a lot of school last year due to ongoing medical care. They wouldn’t accept appt cards as proof of appt. They won’t even accept a letter from the hospital because it doesn’t say a Drs name or reason. Basically if they can’t violate your child’s privacy it’s not acceptable. Anyway they sent me letters all year threatening me. They never did anything else.

My advise for you is to keep him home if you feel he’ll be miserable at school. Keep a journal of his absences (why, what time you called, who you spoke with etc) & all communications with the school. If they follow through with their threats get a lawyer, even if it’s through a low income agency.

If my kid is sick, they don’t go. Just bc you don’t have a fever doesn’t mean you aren’t contagious.
My mom’s first year of school he missed literally HALF of the year bc he was constantly getting sick. Other parents send their sick kids to school and we all get to deal with it.
If your kid is sick, keep them home. Fever or not.

Unfortunately when kids start going to school, they are exposed to a lot of new germs. I get why some people send their kids to school, no childcare/not allowed to miss work/single parent/fear of going to court for truancy. I do wish there were better outcomes for kids whom are sick and still have to go to school. 12 days is a lot of days to miss in my opinion. So if your child needs to stay home for a day then so be it. Its unfortunate but its part of having kids in school. Ive seen some parents say that their kids get sick every year at back to school time because of germs and other sick kids.

Give him some zinc some vitamins b,c and d…boost his immune system…and truly it’s up to u keep him home if u want to he’s your kid!!! But kindergarten is a sespool anyways…and everyone send their boogery coughing kids to school anyways lmao hence whyyyyy the kids all stay sick!!!

Unfortunately the schools don’t care. They want your sick child there because they get paid for every child that goes. If your child misses, they miss out on money. That’s why they’re so serious about how many days THEY WILL ALLOW your child to miss. It’s disgusting. They don’t care about your child or the other children who will inevitably get sick from your child. Public school systems suck.

My rule is if they don’t have a fever and aren’t throwing up they go to school. If they feel worse the nurse will send them home and it will be excused. My littles have terrible allergies just like I do and if I let them miss Everytime they had a running nose I’d be in big trouble

My kindergarten kiddo caught a nasty bug the first day. She didn’t have a fever but I’m a firm believer in resting at home when sick. Sending sick kids to school to make sure the school gets their tax dollars for the day isn’t worth it. I’ll take mine to urgent care and send her back when she’s healthy again so she doesn’t infect other people’s children.

I never sent my son to school when he didn’t feel well, whether he had a fever or not

A lot of kids get sick in the beginning of the school year, I know mine does unfortunately. And also allergies kick in too and that can cause a lot of coughing and runny nose. For me it also depends on how bad the cough and runny nose are, I also think of that child’s health history. If it’s persistent that your kiddo can’t have a good day at school then keep them home. Take them to the doctor to give you a piece of mind if need be. You can also reach out to the teacher, since your kid will be at school a good part of the day to check in. Worst case the nurse will call you to pick them up. Personally if my kids are coughing anywhere for 3-5 days straight, and if I am already giving them medicine at home and it’s not working I would be making an appointment (again given their health history). I think it’s a mom thing, but if I hear a “certain” type of cough/and they have this look on their face I immediately make an appointment. With that being said get doctors notes. Make yourself a copy to keep at home, and give the actual one to the school. I get schools that allow a child to be absent a certain amount of times but I wouldn’t let it bother me, especially knowing when some kids get sick shit hits the fan and they can’t go to school. :woman_shrugging:t4: Overall I hope your kiddo gets better soon.

Our school is doing that if they miss regardless B.S. too so I told mine this year there will not be a 24 hr rule. They will go to school. If the nurse sends them home then the school doesn’t count it against them so they’ll go and I’ll happily go pick them up as needed. If they want to play stupid games then so can I. Also no fever or throwing up they’re supposed to go

Your kids school can’t take you to court for missing if you have a doctors note. Keep your kid home, take to the doc for a written excuse and let your baby rest! Even just a cold can still be so miserable, plus a stiff nose and cough can turn into much worse if not treated. Also, I CANNOT stand parents who send their kids to school sick, it’s completely unfair to everyone eoseb

If he doesn’t have a fever or diarrhea or vomiting then send him. Sadly COVID protocol doesn’t exist any more. A friend lost her job because she and her family came down with Covid and she missed too much work

Welcome to the school year
People send their kids with fevers
Please don’t!

Runny nose and cough , he can go . Wash hands and tissues. Maybe meds. Fever , DONT send

Usually if they have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea that’s when you keep them home. A cough and sniffles is normal usually because of allergies. They won’t take that “sickness” seriously most of the time.

Give Vitamin D. Children’s vitamin s don’t contain enough. Ask the Pharmacist how much to give him from now on!

No fever than go to school. On the other hand there is a virus going around. At least where I live. People are coughing, people throwing up but no fever. So if you think that your kiddo says something keep him or her home.

if my child doesn’t have a fever or vomiting they go to school.

Selfish a$$ parents are the reasons why everyone gets sick during the school year. Nobody keeps their sick kids home so it spreads like wildfire.

Thats how my kid started they both tested positive for covid 1 was covid and strep. The one with just covid had no fever.

First off you need to take him to the doctor. A lot of people are catching Covid right now and I feel that that is one thing that the school will be OK keeping him home for but then you ask the school if that’s what they want.

Unfortunately you have to send them to school sick. Some schools provide masks :mask: to not spread the germs. Just so you can get a call an hour or 2 after class starts to pick them up :expressionless: fever or no fever they are asked to be picked up especially if they are coughing in my town

Start giving your child elderberry gummies. Kids will get sick when they start school, they are building up their immune system. If your child has no fever, not vomiting or having diarrhea, send them to school

Why are we feeling like we have to send our babies in if they are sick? These are our children and we as parents know what’s best for them. If you feel like you’re child is too sick to send in then don’t send them. Super easy (:
I know when I’m sick as a adult the miserable feeling of having to work or take care of the house. Why would I send my child that isn’t feeling good to school?? What makes people think they are going to learn anything that day?
It definitely doesn’t make sense to send them.

I’m going to be the odd parent out here for this opinion, but if I kept my kid home every time they had a cough or runny nose then I would have to home school and I definitely wouldn’t be able to keep my job. One of my boys keeps a cough from fall through spring and when he gets bronchitis he gets it bad and it doesn’t want to go away. If your kid has a negative covid/flu/strep test and is not running a fever or vomiting/ diarrhea they should be okay to go.

Uhhh take the kid to a doctor? Duh.

I’d send my kids to school as long as there’s no fever and he’s still acting ok. Maybe send him in a mask.
It could be a cold, but it could also be allergies.
