When did you switch your child from a crib to a toddler bed?

I have a question; my son is 2.5yrs old and seems to love his crib. He has never tried to climb out. But I am wondering how you know when they are ready for a big boy bed ? He has been waking in the night often … I blamed that on potty training for a while but now he’s ending up in our bed to go back to sleep. This is out of the norm for him, I have tried to co-sleep with him, and he just wouldn’t go to sleep in our bed. Is he may be uncomfortable in the crib and need s something bigger? He is very tall for his age!

Just recently switched my daughter because she was climbing out. She’s a little older than 2.5. I was anxious and worried but she stays in it fine and is a lot happier about bed time

I swapped when we started potty training, just so she knew she could get up on her own to go in the middle of the night. She was 2 at the time. She’ll be 3 on monday. :sob: has never had an accident in her bed.

My son was a little over 3 when I switched him. He slept like a champ and never climbed out of the crib on his own so I didn’t see any point in disrupting that. He’s 4.5 now and getting too long for the bed so ill be getting him a mattress for his full size conversion bed for Christmas.

Depends on the child. My son came out at 9 months because he was climbing out. My daughter was 3.5 because she just loved her crib I finally took her out only because she was getting too big. LOL

I switched my daughters as soon she climbed out and fell which was about 14 months. I wasn’t going to risk get hurting herself again no chance

I would get the bed, but leave the crib also. you will know when it is time to take the crib…I hope this helps.

Switched my daughter when she was 2 and 2 months

Try going with a twin size bed with the side rails on both sides, may make him feel like a crib all my girls I had in a big girl bed by 1

Mine is 3.8 and have just removed sides from cot. If it works don’t change it because everyone else does.

At 2.5, we took the front off of the crib and put up a guardrail. We had a climber. It works for now. When she gets too long, we will get her a twin bed.

Girls are easier with potty then some boys.

About a year and a half. I then put him in a proper single bed at 2.

I moved my son out of his cot just after he’s 2nd birthday. He started climbing out but, he is also tall and when he moved in he’s sleep you can hear him hitting the cot bars.

My sons had no sides on his cot since he was just over a year old cause he wouldn’t stop climbing out, went straight to a single bed at 2.5 and skipped the toddler bed altogether and and he’s been sleeping fine. Goes down 7:30pm, takes 30 mins to get him to sleep then he’s up around 5:45-6am

Don’t Co sleep! My daughter was 11 before she went back to her bed.

We switched both kids at 2 years old. They probably couldn’t have lasted longer in the crib but I didn’t want to prolong it. They both loved their new found freedom of getting up but they settled after the new-ness wore off.

I swapped at 13 months. My daughter hated her crib and she showed interest in sleeping on her just her crib mattress during her nap time. It took about a week to switch her and she loves her bed

whenever they are ready you’ll know. my daughter was about 2. we just put my boyfriends son who is 2 in a toddler bed so we could get him used to it before we have our newborn and shes old enough for a crib

I switched my youngest daughter the week of her second birthday. We made it a pretty big deal and she loves going to her “big girl bed” she does get up in the night once and awhile, we can here her in the playing, but has never tried to leave her room, and she will put herself back to bed. Works pretty good for this graveyard working mamma so I can get a little nap in the morning when I get home

My son is 3 and 1/2 and still sleeps comfortably in his crib.

We switched both boys to toddler beds at 18 months.

As soon as my kids crawled out of their cribs, the gates were taken down, and converted into a toddler bed. But if you think he would be more comfortable in one, than go for it! No harm in it really.

When they could climb over the rail when it was up and slither down the rail, indian still then take off running. I had 6 children in 7 years. My 5th child ( girl) did this and she was only 10 months old. I was 7 months with my last and wasn’t moving very fast.

If he’s happy roll with it. I’d keep my eyes out for a good deal on a bed… he’s old enough… but he seems happy.

None of my kids tried to climb out of their cribs my oldest co slept with us and used her bed we got her a twin bed when i had her sister, she was 2 1/3 sister was also about 2 their little sister moved into a toddler bed at about 18 months because she wanted to sleep like her sisters.

We.We switched the kid to a regular twin bed from a crib before 2 years old because another baby was due. We made a big deal about a new, big girl bed, with drawers under the mattress, where she could keep some special toys. But it needed a rail to keep her from falling for a coupe of months.

Both my kids were in big beds by 2 because they knew how to climb out or in my son’s case too big for what I had him in. You never really know unless you try i suggest getting roll guards or the rails that clips under the mattress. They are in twin beds they are 2.5 and 5

Mine were in beds at 1 year old because they figured out how to climb out. I would say no later than 3 for a big boy bed, just my two cents

When my older were able to climb out, about 1.5 years for both. No such thing as toddler beds then. They went right into twin beds. My youngest never did climb out but, at about 1.5 years, we transitioned him to the bottom bunk, with a rail. For a few nights, he went to sleep in our bed, then id put him in his bed. After about a week of waking up in his own bed, he was ok going to sleep in his bed.

My son and his wife came up w a great solution because their son was getting too long for the crib and starting to try to climb out. They got him a tent-like bed w has a twin sized mattress on the floor, w a dome like top and plastic ‘windows ‘ that zip open. He loves it and it is also helping him get used to sleeping on the floor w he will be doing on a mat in the next level at day care. If you google tent bed I think you can find it. I see lots of ads for this type of bed.
I was so happy they found this bed because my daughter’s friend’s baby broke his leg climbing out of his crib years ago

My 2 kids never climbed out of the crib! When they each turned 2, we put them in twin beds! My grandkids never climbed out either! Some got toddler beds and used them for a couple years. And some got twin beds. The last one 3 was in a toddler bed and just got her big girl bed! Never
Fell out! Her brothers are another story!

When I couldn’t take being kicked all night, they were banned to their own beds.

Most say if they aren’t trying to climb out leave them in the crib. But if he is able to potty by himself id switch over to a toddler bed now or even a twin size bed

The minute my son’s learned how to crawl over the side. There was no point in keeping them in the crib any longer.

You need to get him into a big boy bed. Both of my girls were in toddler beds by time they were 2. Let him pick it out and his bedding. Let him keep one thing from his crib that he liked sleeping with

2.5 is a good age to do it. We bought a bed rail so they wouldn’t roll out accidentally (we had 3). I don’t know if you ever noticed or not, but crib mattresses are HARD. Like laying on concrete imo.

I wouldn’t get a toddler bed unless it is an issue of space get a twin size on floor or with side rails

One of my two were climbing out of crib at 2.5.
So we bought bunk beds, but both were floor level.
With bumper guards on sides.

At a year old. I was pregnant with my second child so we got him a toddler bed that had a rail. He’s 21 now and my 2nd is 19.

When he started climbing out. He was about 18 months old.

My daughter was in a toddler bed at 1 and train bed with rail at 2

When they started climbing out of the baby bed

We switched when climbing out of the crib began. I caught him climbing back into the crib and I thought he’d break his neck. Too far to fall for this mom/grandmom. I found the rails that slide under the mattress and used them to prevent falls. They didn’t stop kids from getting out of bed, but did prevent falling out of bed.

My daughter moved in to a twin bed at 15 months. We used a side rail so she wouldn’t roll off he bed. She adjusted with no problems.

Do you have room for a big boy bed and his crib. Mine is 3 and her crib is still up. Sometimes she wants to sleep in the crib Sometimes her big girl bed. Been just around 5 months like this and most of the time she chooses the big girl bed. Sometimes they just need the comfort of knowing its there. Slow transition but its working way better for me than just moving to a big bed with her older brother.

When our punkin had attained the where-with-all to climb out of her crib, we looked into a bed. We understood that the containment unit was no longer effective. : )

Get him a cool toddler bed let him go help pick it out he probably needs more space and most toddler beds have build in guard rails

I moved my son at 2. He went right to a queen size. I moved it next to the wall and added a bed rail.

My granddaughter never tried to climb out of her crib. She has vision problems, I moved her out when she was about your sons age

1 always at 1yr old, has worked for all 3 kiddos. The first week can be rough walking them back to bed frequently, but smooth sailing after.

You could also try his mattress on the floor to see how he likes being able to get in and out on his own.

We put our daughter in a toddler bed at 1 and just put a rail on the side to keep her safe

Never… We just went right to a low twin with a safety rail around 1/1.5… Whenever they can get out of a crib

As soon as mine could walk they were in toddler beds. See no point to a crib with a walking child

my son was 1 when he went to a twin bed he never had a kiddy bed with no railing

When they climb out of the crib and get hurt.

Mine were in regular beds with a rail between 15-18 months

Once they start climbing out it’s safer

My oldest around 18 months. My youngest; on his 1st birthday-he climbed out of his crib.

2 yrs old. Needed the room, crib for second child.

When they start crawling out

Mine were between 18 mo and 2yrs when they switched

my twins were climbing out of their cribs at 9 months old, so i took the cribs down and put the mattresses on the floor, it was never a problem

Once they could climb out.

Mine were ready when they started climbing out of the crib, I rather risk a fall out of a youth bed, than a broken bone from a a crib fall!

One family I read about got the child the big boy/girl bed on their 2d birthday. It was a family day and everyone went to the store with the 2 yr old to help pick out the big bed, either z toddler bed or a full size twin. The birthday child could choose. The book also stated that even after that it took a few weeks for the child to be stay all night in the big bed but it was the start of sleeping in the bed.
In my family, when my kids came to my bed at night, I would tell them that they would wake up in their bed. I had been bullyed into thinking it was not good if they slept with me at night. My mom’s generation preached that we would “spoil” a child if we let them sleep in our bed at night, whatever that meant. They sleep with mom and dad when they need to feel safe from night terrors or bad dreams and all too soon quit coming in for the extra cuddling. I wish I had gone with my feelings and not my mom and aunt. I did defy them about bedtimes. My kids went to bed much later than mom and my aunt said they should because the later bedtime meant that they woke up when I did and not at the crack of dawn when I was still sleeping.

An additional note: My son was a restless sleeper and some nights got to the foot of his toddler bed and couldn’t get out. I short sheeted his bed after that until he got too tall for the half sheets. (Don’t know how to short sheet: Make bed with fitted and put flat top sheet on top and tuck in at top of bed and then lay to the bottom and fold back up so the sheet goes down about half the way. Finish bed with flat sheet like always made.) Kids like to be able to touch the bottom of their sheet and don’t get lost inthe bottom of the bed as easy. Putting the fitted on first helps if an active sleeper untucks the top of the flat sheet.

My son was in a toddler bed for about a year. He moved upto a twin bed that we pushed against a wall. To help him from rolling off the twin bed, we put a pool noodle under the fitted sheet. This was the best way from him falling off. It was funny his first night, he was all over his bed. By the fourth night he was happy about being in a bigger bed.

My wife refused to make the kids sleep in their own beds. If she wasn’t going to help me make them more independent, then I had to do it myself. The kids and she would crawl in bed. After they fell asleep, I would carry my wife to the love seat and I would sleep on the couch. When the kids woke up, they couldnt fit on couch with us. Next thing u know, one kid after another going to their own bed at night.

If they are potty trained… automatic big boy bed. If endangering himself (climbing out) automatic upgrade. If to large to co comfortably fit… automatic upgrade. Your kid is probably ready at 2.5 if he’s tall for his age.

I Never Had My Kids Sleep In Our Bed And My Kids Were Transferred Out Of Thier Cribs By 2 Years Old…No Issues…

All 12 of mine by 1. And they absolutely loved it

My daughter went from crib to toddler bed at 18 months and then to a mid sleeper just after her second birthday

14 months is when I switched my daughter so I would say at 2.5 hes ready to switch

I found the bed that my son n wife got for their two yr old: google Privacy Pop!

Short answer, when they get out of the crib by themselves. When they can climb out, a crib is pointless.

He just wants to be with his mommy. They grow up so fast. Wish I had let them sleep with me more. Now all my grand kids are grown. Seems like over night.

They should already be transitioned to a toddler bed if they have already started potty training.
