When should I start pumping?

Hey mamas I’m 30 weeks 4 days with my second baby and I’ve been leaking colostrum should I start pumping I just feel so full and my chest has been hurting like it did when I needed to feed my son. I’m just scared it’ll induce labor

I didn’t colostrum until the day I gave birth my milk came in after 2-4 days and I started pumping immediately

It’s best to talk to your doctor. It is different for everyone. Some doctors do not want you to pump until after delivery, others will clear you to pump pre delivery.

I would leave your ob a message and also the lactation consultant at your hospital. They will give the very best advice

Collect the colostrum in a wee syringe and freeze it, if you need to express do it in the shower but gentle

This is a question for your doctor. Everybody is different and it could jump start pre term labor. So it’s best to speak to your doctor about this

Most doctors will give you the green light at 37 weeks bc it can induce labor

Don’t start now. That can induce early labor. Definitely contact your doctor. If you’re leaking. You could use those catchers. But don’t stimulate your nips.

No, do not pump. You can buy milk savers and wear them but do not express or stimulate in anyway until 38 weeks minimum.

You should not pump until at least 37 weeks. You can however collect your leaking colostrum and save for when baby arrives. At least that’s what I was advised during all of my pregnancies. Speak to your own Dr and ask for their advice.

I just talked to my doctor about this Monday. I’m 23 weeks and feel SOOO full and am having very painful letdowns.
She said to not use an electric pump at all till 37 weeks.
Use a hand pump and go slow or like a haaka
She said that it’s not recommended ONLY because it can cause a major supply of colostrum. It can cause contractions so LISTEN to your body (everyone is different, pumping didn’t help put me into labor last time AT ALL so I don’t think it will this time but that’s just me :woman_shrugging:)
If it starts causing contractions STOP. But hand expressing is totally okay :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: just expect a big supply of colostrum!

I’ve always been told not to pump before 38 weeks.
Now you can get some of the leak shields that sit in your bra and will collect what you leak naturally without creating a suction that would cause stimulation, similar to pumping or nursing.
That you can then pour into a bag and freeze for later

I would just get something that sticks on your boob and collects the colostrum! Don’t risk pumping especially so early yet.

No you don’t pump until baby is born that’s very dangerous you can start preterm labour

Contact Your OB for sure! And probably only express by hand. Also messaging your breasts in a warm shower should help with that engorged feeling

Not til 37 weeks!
Maybe try collecting (only what your leaking) in a syringe and freeze it but don’t express at all!

It can start preterm labor. At least that’s what I heard. I was still breastfeeding my daughter twice, maybe 3xs a day & pumping a few times a day around 38 weeks hoping to start labor. I had to be induced at 41 weeks anyway :slightly_frowning_face:. I still wouldn’t take any chances this early.

I wldnt start that soon pumping. If you wanted you could collect what passively drops into a container. If you stimulate with pumping 1. You will just induce a preterm delivery and 2. If you don’t deliver early you will be engorged

The very same day you give birth. Make sure you see a lactation consultant.

I started as soon as my milk came in (day 2) because I got engorged :milk_glass: and I try to pump every 3 hours or so or to at least bring it down a bit so my baby girl can latch on correctly. I’m 6 days PP
