My son is 6 years old and I got him in a booster with a back. My mom says he shouldn’t have to have one with a back but from my understanding he shouldn’t go backless untill 7 or 8. I’m just trying to understand he’s my 1st and oldest so I’m not 100 % sure on the transitions expect rear facing to forward which she already argued with me about cause I rear faced my daughter until almost 3 cause she is tiny and could and was comfortable.
My daughter was fully harnessed until 8. It definitely depends on height/weight and ability to stay awake for car rides.
Check with the carseat safety pages in your city.
It’s depending on their weight and height. They tell you on the booster what the min weight is and max. Sorry I’m not in front of mine right now to tell you exact.
My daughter turned 9 earlier this year and last month I removed her 5 point harness seat. My son is 8 and he will probably have his removed at the end of the year. Keep them safe until they physically meet the requirements. IMO 6 is wayyyyyyyyyyy too young for most kids.
Ps it’s way more comfy as well as safe
I believe you should keep them in a booster with a back as long as possible. However, it’s important that their head isn’t above the back and that they still fit! Mine just got too tall.
In Australia backless boosters are illegal and no longer sold.
The safest thing is to have him in a 5 point harness for as long as possible.
My 5 year old is still 5 point harness, my (tall) 8 year old is still in his HBB (head still isn’t at the top) my 11 year old came out of her HBB last year due to not fitting anymore, her shoulders were too wide so she couldn’t properly sit in it anymore
Never. I’d rather do the high back boosters. They have the side impact protection and the seat belt fits better. I’ve seen an kid slide out of backless boosters in a roll over accident.
In our t bone accident. A drunk driver t boned our car. The high back booster my daughter was in protected from the side impact. If she had been in a backless boosters her head would have bounced side to side.
I never went by age always by their weight. So it was different for each of my kids
I would say as.long as they fit.
My 7 year old daughter is in a booster seat as she’s 40+ lbs my almost 6 year old daughter is still in a fully harnessed car seat
You could ask the local fire or police department
I used the back with my kids until they outgrew the harnesses and they complained it was cutting into them
Defined by height amd weight not by age…
Should keep him in booster until he has maxed out height limit
My 5 point harness convertible seat goes all the way up to roughly 8yrs/36kg
Until he maxes out height or weight for highback booster. There is a car seat safety group that has cpsts and they can help you understand.
I went by height AND weight recommendations. Not height OR weight. Age meant nothing to me when mine where little.
what are the requirements in your state? THAT is what you should be doing. If your mom is over 40 her carseat knowledge is outdated, just facts
Depends on their height AND your car. If your back seat seat belt height is adjustable and you can lower it to where the shoulder strap sits correctly without the back, cool. My son could ride in my 3rd row with just a booster where the seat belts were attached to the seat back long before he could in the second row without the back (because the seatbelts were attached to the side of the car).
My son is 9 and still in a high back I just took the harness out after he turned 9!!
My daughter was in a 5 point harness until she started 1st grade. She’s now in a high back booster and there she will stay until she outgrows it. I don’t trust other people on the road and I want her as safe as possible.
My son was in high five point harness until 8. My daughter will be 7 in November & she is still in a five point harness.

My 8 year old barely started using backless car seats and that’s ONLY because I can’t fit three full care seats in the back of the car. Otherwise when we have the space, he will be in a five harness car seat still too.
Age is so arbitrary and drives me crazy a small 12 year old could be the same relative size to a big 6 year old. It’s all about height and weight for your specific seat.
My kids were in backless boosters at age 2 to 3…
My daughter was hit by someone who ran a red light. She took the brunt of the injuries and other that a sore chest, the kids were fine. She purchased another 5 point seat for my 7 year old grandson. Keep them safe.
Mine were in 5 point harnesses until 8 years old. My almost 6 year old is still in hers. Go by both height and weight requirements not one or the other and you should be fine.
I’ll be honest it’s your kid you do what you think is best and honestly I have a 7-year-old and he’s not even in a backless booster yet for my own comfortability. 🩵
My chunky son was in a booster till he was close to nine years old. Check the recommendations by the police , AAA & the pediatrician.
I moved mine to a backless booster around 6, my kids are tall though.
In my state they have to be in a booster until they’re 8 and over 80 lbs or taller than a certain height. My daughter just turned 5 and a couple months ago I took her out of her 5 point harness seat. She was too tall and weighed too much
my kiddo maxed out height and weight very early. She is 10 and nearly 5’6" now…weighs well over 100lbs. She is a big kid all around. I think she was in a backless booster by age 5 or maybe 6 and out of seats completely by age 7 if my memory serves correct. Way too early, but like I said… big and tall like her 6’3" father.
Depends on weight and height
He shouldn’t be backless until the shoulder belt sits appropriately across him. But tech as long he’s hitting height and weight and he’s legally could he can be in whatever.
Kept my grandkids in one with a back till they outgrew it.
Check the height and weight maximum on your seat. If the top of your child’s head is above the back of the booster, probably time to switch out. Both my kids are very tall and grew out of their seats early. So age isn’t a great guide.
My 8 yr old is still in a carseat and my 10 yr old is in a booster seat I have small girls though so I feel they will always be in a carseat of some sort
Always go from the manufacturer recommended ages and weight, or height and weight. It will list it on the car seat or the manual or both. You can also look it up online. Do not go from the recommendation of strangers. Always read your car seat manuals! I believe Graco makes the best for a good price so I’ve used countless Graco car seats for my 3 kids. My youngest is in the triogrow right now and it’s amazing.
According to google once they’re 40lbs they can be in a booster.
Everything else is what you’re comfortable with.
I believe different states are different by law?? Could be wrong about the states? Check out your local BMV for state laws or go online to look it up
Depends on the state. I am in New Jersey and the guidelines are child has to be 40inches and at least 40lbs. Which is about 4-5 years old.
This will give you exactly what seat your child should be in based on age, weight and height.
My 2 grandchildren they both 6 year old they been u no back boosters seat since 5year
My son is about to be 8 and is still in a regular 5 point car seat
It goes up to 100lbs so I am in no rush to switch him
