Attention sports moms! My son has started baseball practice twice a week from 6pm to 8pm and it’s about 30 minutes away. We usually have dinner around 7pm. Should we do dinner at 5/530 and then do a snack afterwards or snack before and dinner afterwards? I just worry about him having a full stomach and then running around in the Florida heat. I know we can grab something from a fast food restaurant if we need to but I’d prefer not to as we are also trying to eat healthier. School is out right now so I don’t mind staying up later for snack or dinner but we are going to have to make changes once school starts. Any advice is appreciated.
Honestly my kids want to eat before and after. So I would suggest 2 small meals. A healthy meal before and something fast and easy after.
Ravioli in a paper cup on the way. That’s what we did on busy soccer days.
It’s always better to eat earlier than later. When you eat late, you don’t give your body enough time to digest properly before going to bed and that is terrible for you. A meal about 5 pm and then a healthy snack before bed would be best.
I think 830-9 is too late to eat I’d rather eat before or even on the way. Think like sandwiches or chicken strips. Then if hungry on the way home a healthy snack
Nothing wrong with having a late dinner. I love late dinners in the summer time. Honestly it depends on the mood you guys are in. Do you want dinner at 5 that day? Or is everyone not that hungry for dinner and can make like appitzers and come home have dinner. Like I would do sandwiches & salad little finger foods before we go & then have dinner when we get home. Or you can do it the other way around have dinner first then have sandwiches and stuff when you get back. I prefer the dinner at 7 but that’s just me
Sometimes they want it before, sometimes after, and other days both. I find having something ready to eat before activities is best. If they don’t want it then, they can always have it later. I try to make things that are easy to reheat.
Snack before dinner after. That’s what we did. I did crock pot meals or pre-made dinner. So it was ready when we got home.
Another thought would be not only eating early but having a cold meal: Cold sandwich. Cottage cheese. A few chips. They don’t need a large nutritious meal all the time. Or use your crockpot.
Considering he has to shower when he gets home I’d feed him before. My grands had games at either 530 630 or 730. Meal times varied
Light meal before, include lots of watermelon. Regular meal after once he has had a chance to cool down.
Snack before. Pack a cooker with sandwiches or snacks to have on ride home and give the option of a snack or light dinner after practice
We do dinner afterwards becuase shouldn’t run on a full stomach.
Oh that’s a hard one . Been there and done this
Have snack early, dinner can be something lite.
Dinner after ward a light meal after their sports they will get sick!
Honestly eating a meal before would put too much in their stomach and they may get sick. Id do a snack before and small dinner after. Like subs or stuff like that
When my daughter did practice like this we ate dinner before and snack after before bed. We made that choice because I do have three other kids two of them being toddlers and so it just worked out better for them because they went to bed while she was at practice
I wouldn’t advise large meal prior as it would highly likely come back up during practice especially if running drills.
Later lunch, say 2-3. Then a snack before practice.
It’s hot so make sure he has some sugar & salt going in to replace what he’ll sweat out. Have fruit or something for any breaks. Then dinner after.
He may need to cool down & shower before he eats. He’ll tell you when he’s hungry.
