When should you stop giving your kids sippy cups?

I have a 3yr old and 4yr old. Both boys. I was wondering when is an appropriate time to stop giving your child sippy cup type of cups. My boys have been drinking out of regular cups for a while now but honestly I get so tired of them spilling or knocking the cups over constantly. I’m tempted to give them a non spill sippy cup for like toddlers. Especially with my 3yr old, he has adhd and I think he could be autistic. Do I just wait it out? Or is it OK to give them sippy cups?

i love the straw cups for my 5 year old. they can still leak but wayyyyy less than an open cup.

I love cups with lid and straw. Still can spill but mess is way less and I like cause keeps the dog out lol

I still give my almost 4 year old a sippy cup. He sometimes uses regular. I say when there is a lot less accidents is when I’ll eliminate sippy cups completely.

When ever it’s not a requirement by any means but I switch to water bottles with straws the kids ones that have a straw that pops up and down with bottom they love Them and it keep the spills down mine are now 6 7 and 10 and it works great just make sure you let them pick the cups and you buy a straw cleaner they will use more often if they pick vs fighting them to drink it

I still give my almost 5 yo a sippy cup he can drink out of a regular cup and straws I just get tired of cleaning up the mess lol also he’s on the spectrum and developmentally delayed

My 3 year old uses a sippy cup AND a bottle still :joy::woman_shrugging:t2:

:woman_shrugging: I’m an adult, I carry around a contigo, which is a grownup sippy cup.
That said, 13 month old uses a straw cup most often, but he’ll use an open cup or drink from my water bottle.

My daughter is autistic and 6 years old and still takes a bottle. It’s that or a feeding tube. We get a lot of judgemental looks, but I could care less. As long as your child is happy and healthy you do what you gotta do.

When they don’t spill stuff or learn to keep it in the dining room on the table… one of the hubby’s friends was spilling beer all over one time and I put it in a sippy cup for him because I ain’t cleaning it up

We’ve been using these, the same concept as a regular cup. Our oldest 8 legally blind and on the spectrum knocks things over or can’t see them, so it helps. The youngest also uses them too but he’s just careless lol

I use spill proof water bottles with a straw. Or a regular cup with a lid and straw if we’re at home. I only filled it half way at first until he got bigger and now he’s able to do a full cup.

At 6, mine still uses a spill proof cup, not a baby cup but spill proof

I stopped when my kid turned 3 partially because my dog kept chewing them up, he gets a kid sized normal cup and a straw and does great. They’ll learn not to spill after the first few times

It’s you who Jason to clean up. You will know when it’s time. If you are going to use straws, be sure to trim only an inch or so above cover so they don’t jam the straw if they fall.

I used the flip top water bottle after the water is gone ,just poured the drink into the bottle(might need to use a funnel)

Omgoodness figure it out!

At 3 and 4 my kids still had spill proof cups and we worked at keeping their drinks in the kitchen. Once they stopped carrying it around the house I then moved using cups for them.

My kids stopped at like 3. They still spill sometimes but they’ve learned to clean it up when they do

Keep the sippy cups wont have to clean so many messes they will learn soon enough

Buy bathroom Dixie cups. Works perfectly.

I hardly ever used sippy cups, so my tip is to fill it the smallest amount and use smaller cups, even if you have to get plastic shot glass cups.

I used them on the go only

My kids are almost four and almost six and they use straw cups for everything. Not dealing with the terrible mess from open cups on all my furniture and such.

I stopped after the year and use thermo cups.

Hell I use sippy cups! Less mess

Have you tried straw cups. My daughter really liked the Munchkin brand now she’s just onto regular kids straw cups. She’s 4

Can you go to a drink bottle? Or even fill the cup with the amount of liquid that they will drink then and there no left overs to be spilt? But honestly they are your babies and your the one who has to clean up what they spill so do what you need to do mummah.

Water bottles with straws or straws cups with screw close lids are great. Way less spillage

They can start sippy cups at 6 months old. Try something’s thing like the munchin cup. Or a cup with straw.

You do whatever makes your day easier mama! There’s no right or wrong and I don’t remember when my kids stopped using them. They are 7 and 12 and from them not being careful and still spilling, I’m tempted to go back to them lol!

I’m 67 and drink out of a cup with a lid too.

WIC is insistent that my two year old starts using a cup. He’s two.

They should both be drinking out of regular cups. People baby their kids too much now a days and that is why we have a generation of spoiled brats

I had 3 boys & 3 brothers & 7 grandsons. Do not hurry. They are very messy. I think take away sippy cup around 12/13.

Experts say pull away as soon as you can because it is bad for their dental hygiene, dental alignment, can create thumb sucking habits, and speech impediments. A good alternative is to train on a cup with a straw to assist in avoiding a spill. Then once spills are averted switch to an adult cup with a top.

Try a drink bottle instead

You think he should be autistic like WTF, did a doctor diagnose him?

They are your children :two_hearts:

I start at 2yrs & cups are only allowed in the kitchen/ dining room.

They have different kinds of spill proof cups that aren’t ‘sippy’, try looking into regular water bottles for children. That way they get hydrated, it’ll be fun for them, they can take it virtually anywhere, better for mouths, and no messes for you  They’re even good for kiddos with special needs.

my son is 4 and still on a sippy cup but i bought some off amazon because he chews them or likes to throw cups. these things are awesome!

My son’s dentists would have called the people on me, no bottles at nine months, no sippys at 12. Well as far as he knew :joy: :joy:
But, do what works for you what worked for me isn’t gonna work for anyone else on here vice versa…

I still give my 8 year old cups with built in straws that are leak proof because she is horrible otherwise :joy: I’m tired of cleaning chocolate milk

Switch to small water bottles.
