When to stop breastfeeding a child?

I think most doctors say try until at least one year, but it’s your breastfeeding journey so you and your little one kind of decide when enough is enough. If you are willing to keep going, you can always pump at work. Im a nurse, it’s rough sometimes but I manage. My son is 8 months old and been at work since he was 3 months but work part time.

I’ve never had a Dr tell me to breast feed until 9 months. I quit after a month and a half because my nipples cracked and bled and my daughter was drinking it with the breast milk. I never breast fed my son.

The recommendations is actually 2 years old. But it’s fully up to you

Breastfeed for as long as you want. Natural weaning is between 2 and 6 or 7 years old. I personally have a long term goal of 4 years with my daughter. That Dr has no idea what they are talking about :woman_facepalming::woman_facepalming:

It’s up to you. Some do you get some do later but ultimately it’s your decision and your situation. I only did a couple months with 4 of my 5.

At one year if not longer. Its actually recommended to 3 years. I breastfed one to 2 yrs and that was too long for me. 1 yr to 1.5 imo

I fed my guy until right before his 2nd birthday. Do what you feel is right for you and your baby!

Mines 18mo and I’m still at it, wish I wasn’t but he’s not ready to ween yet. He still drinks milk water and juice but at bedtime and when he wakes up he gets the “boof”… Or when his big brothers are stressing him out.

It’s recommended to breastfeed until 2 years if you can.

I only breastfed for 2 months. My sister in law breast fed her sons for 2 years!! All the kids are happy, healthy, and so smart! You make the rules mama!

If ur due back at work then yes wean off the breast or u could always express for when u are at work and breastfed when ur at home that’s what I did x

Breastfeed as long as you can and want. Theres no wrong answer or right answer, only what works best for you. If I can breastfeed for 2 years, I will. But if I cant or it works better to stop sooner, then that’s what we will do.

The lactation nurse told me to do it as long as I can and comfortable. She also said it is most common to stop at 1 but moms do still breastfeed till 4-5 years… maybe not on the boob but Atleast by pumping

Whatever is comfortable for you I be for almost 2 years

I went 1 year called it quits when my son bit off a chunk of my nip lmao

Some do till 3 yrs… I think its more of when you feel its time

A friend of mine done her little girl and she’s a year old

I just spoke with my nutritionist this morning. And she told me they recommended 6 months to 1 year My last baby was breast fed for 6 months she said that was perfect. But like anything everyone has there own opinions on how long to do so. My children are nice and healthy and I only went 6 months with 1 of them the other 2 were completely different

That’s totally up to you. Anything after 6 months is amazing so you did great if youd like to stop . I’d stilled occassional breastfeeding if you dont want to pump at work and introducing cows milk little by little until 12 months is ok around this time as well. It’s a good way to wean and dry up for the rest of the months from 9 to 12 months

You make the rules I only breastfed my first son till 4 months old then he self weened and refused me. He is now 17 graduated High school with a 4.5 has a full scholarship to MSU. I fed my 2nd son till he was 14 months when I felt done because he only fed from me at night was eating food and drinking from a cup during the day
So if you/ and him are not done then there really is not a reason to stop
If you can’t or don’t want to pump at work then feed formula and BF when you can

Only you can make that decision. BF as long as you want.

I breast fed my 1st for a yr as the pediatrician recommended, and my 2nd for about 6 months because my milk dried up. On one hand its best for baby to breastfeed for at least 1yr, on the other hand if you wait to long it will be harder for you and baby to adjust. I would not breastfeed longer then 1yr.

My kids self weaned between 15 months and 19 months.
Personally I would push as far as I can, if you stop at 9 months you will still need to buy formula. Go past a year and no formula.

My 6 year old breast fed til he was 23 months… My daughter breastfed until 2 years 3 months n I’m still going strong with my 1 year old… I’ve been continually breastfeeding or pregnant for the past 6 n half years :rofl: (my 9 year old never took to the boob)
All I can say is babies use the breast as comfort too… If you’re gonna wean do it gently n slowly… Youre taking away something they’ve had since they were born.
Mine only weaned cos my milk changed from being pregnant :joy: I’d of loved to tandem feed

Nobody says breastfeed until 9 months lol. You breastfeed for as long as you AND baby want to breastfeed. If that’s 3m, 9m, 2 years then so be it. Stop whenever you feel is best for you and baby.

I breastfed until 2 years and had plenty of frozen milk for my son so used up till it was done (6 months I believe)… I had to take an emergency trip out of the country to see my grandma and that was the best time to stop.

I actually hadn’t heard about the 9 month recommendation. I usually hear “breast is best for a year.” If you can go that long you are amazing!!! 9 months is a long time too!! I wasn’t able to breastfeed after 6 weeks because my period came and my milk dried up. I know some babies who have been breastfed for 3+ years, and others who were on formula for a year and a half or, in my case I gave up breastfeeding and formula at 9 months as a baby; they’re all hitting the same milestones and doing great! Do what’s best for you and your little one.

Go for as long as you want . And if you wanna stop you can stop.

My sister did until my niece was two. It’s to your comfort.

My first i weaned at 14 months old
2nd baby my milk dried up at 5 months so he had formula
3rd baby he’s 8 months and still nursing.

You can do it as long as you want to! If you don’t want to anymore, its ok to stop. If you want to go longer, then go longer. Breastmilk doesn’t lose its nutritional value based on a child’s age.

Some of us weren’t able to breastfeed at all, do what you are comfortable with.

It’s truly up to you and/or baby.

Our breastfeeding journey stopped once she was introduce to solid food at about 10 months. Lol girl loves her food.

This is yours and baby’s journey. You can continue to feed until you and/or baby are ready to stop. Pediatricians recommend at least a year or longer if possible.

Here the doctors say breastfeed until 12 months, or formula, they can’t be weened from milk/formula until 1 yr old. If you make the decision to ween from breastmilk, make sure you have bottles and formula for the next 3 months. Any breastfeeding is great, so any time you choose to switch is up to you.

17 months and still breastfeeding. She only has one breastfeed a day though

I breast fed until 17 months even after going back to work.

Do it only as long as it benefits you and yours

Most doctors agree only a year. The WHO says 2 years. Most countries do it a year or longer except America.

Thats your choice and your choice only. I never breastfed my son. Whatever makes you feel comfortable do it longer or stop thats up to you mama

WHO recommends up to 2, however this is solely your choice Mama. Do what you are comfortable with! If you want/can pump at work - go for it, if you want to only BF in the am/pm - go for it, and if you want to wean - go for it! YOU ultimately decide how to nourish your child. 9 months is an incredible length of time to BF.

I breastfed my first until 18 months, I’m 4 months in with my second.
Do whatever works for you! If you’re returning to work pumping or switching to formula are good options for during the day, breastfeeding whenever you can at home? You and baby will figure it out I’m sure

This decision is you and babies!!!

I stopped at 5 months because I wasn’t producing enough and she got her teeth and was more interested in food ! I still used formula ! I know many who go a year. Some 2-3 years. It’s preference.

There is no perfect time ,just do what ever feels good for you  .
If u are ready to stop that’s fine if not that’s fine to .

Can even breast feed only at night times to .

As long as you are happy that’s all that matters

I work full time and still nurse my baby. I nursed one baby until she was 13 months, my son until he was 16 months and my baby now nurses and she is 3 months. Worked full time with all of them.

Whenever you are ready.

There is no magic number that you need to breastfeed - stop whenever you want to. All Moms and their babies are different .

Babies’ primary source of nutrition until 1 years old should be either breast milk or formula. If you decide to stop nursing now, make sure that you are giving baby formula or pumped breast milk as well as any other food that you might be offering. Do what’s best for you and baby!

Fed both of mine for a year. Do what works for you

I breastfed until I either was forced to wean by drying up at 13-16 months or they self weaned. When going back to work you can nurse in the morning and at night and on the weekends on demand if you do not want to be bothered with pumping. Otherwise you can pump during the day. And FYI it’s recommended to nurse as long as you and your baby and into it

Totally your decision I breastfed for 20 months. That was longer then I wanted but I couldn’t get my son to drop night feeds until then.

I would until a year because that’s when they can have cows milk.

When your ready to stop

Do whatever you want to do. It’s up to you not anyone else. I personally never would in the first place

You can always pump so the baby is still getting your milk while you’re at work

How ever long you and your baby want

Tbh. You need to do what is best for you and your family. If breastfeeding works and continues to work great. If it relieves some pressure by weaning then wean. You can always exclusively pump if you want to continue but dont want to nurse anymore.

I would say it’s your choice, try expressing enough for feeds if you want to keep your child on breast milk or if you feel your ready to stop and switch then stop. It’s what’s best for you I tried and didn’t get a month into breastfeeding before I couldn’t deal

Pump but it’s up to you.

However long you want! A year two years whatever works for you and your baby

Do what YOU’D like to do, it’s your body and your child. If you’d like to stop now, then go for it! Momma knows best!

Do whatever works best for you and baby

Someone tell me HOW TO STOP my kid is 14 months old and I still do. On and off during the day but we still do every night before bed. Im just not sure how to tell him no. It’s hurts my feeling and his especially if he gets a booboo he isntanly wants boob

When it’s right for you and your baby.

For as long as you want. Generally two years is considered the maximum but there are people who few beyond. I stopped by 8.5 months because that was right for us.

I breastfed until they had teeth :tooth:

You can pump at work and at home after you feed baby you can do formula and just add the breast milk bottles in through out the day

AAP recommends until age 2 actually… but it’s absolutely a personal choice. If you wean now baby will need formula, however.

I went back at 6 weeks and at about 10 months stopped pumping at work cuz my boy didnt like the bottle. We went 2.5 years!

When mine were 7 months, I went back to work part time. I had a pump, but that ended up being time consuming. So instead, I supplemented with a formula and breastfed when home. I was able to do this until 13 months when we decided to completely wean them to cup. This worked for us. Just find what feels comfortable to you and adjust that as needed.

Whenever your comfortable stopping.

As long as you want too , it’s healthy, it’s only up to you, don’t listen to stupid people

I would say a year. If you want to continue after that’s fine. To either breast feed or pump and give in a bottle. The reason for me saying this is because they dont reccomend children go on to cows milk until 1 year. So if you stop breastfeeding then u will be formula feeding until they are 1.

IAs your child gets a little older and doesn’t like the bottle, offer it in a sippy cup. I breastfed my last child until 2.5 yrs old. Everytime someone ie. his dad pestered me to stop, I added another 6 months.

I did up to 10 months as I was going back to work, but I wish I had pumped as my milk dried up fast and I would have loved to continue longer! Do what is best for you, but you can always do both formula and Breastfeeding if you can manage to pump as well :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Do whatever you want🤷. I did till my kids were one but I didn’t work so it didn’t matter

It all depends on if you both are ready to stop. My son wasn’t ready so I ended up breastfeeding him until he was 2 and half years old… I was done but he wanted to keep going. It all depends on you and your baby. Everyone is different.

Theres no right or wrong answer. Do whats best for YOU and BABY.

If you stop before a year baby will have to have formula, but there is no right or wrong answer.

You can stop whenever you and your baby are ready! I stopped with my first child at 2 and a half years, and with my younger one I stopped at a year and a half. I personally wanted to wait until they were atleast one, so I could do regular milk during the day, and just kept the night feedings. That way I could still keep the bonding part and breastfeeding benefits without feeling guilty about stopping. Also, I didnt have to work though, so I didnt have to worry about the stress of pumping… you’ll know when it’s time to stop, and you shouldn not feel bad for wanting to stop early, if you have to work and dont want to deal with the stress of pumping there, which I’ve heard can be difficult and uncomfortable, do what’s best for you too, babies adapt very quickly.

It’s recommended until age 2 but your child NEEDS either formula or breast milk until age 1. So if you stop now you’ll need to do formula until baby is 1. Do what’s right for you.

I’ve done baby lead weaning. My two older ploys stopped on their own At 12 and 13 months. Currently on day 2 of breastfeeding my youngest. I worked when my oldest was 9 months and I just pumped my milk at work

recommended age is 2, but it’s personal preference. if stopped before a year formula would have to be used unless you have a freezer stock. breast milk is beneficial for babies well past a year and your body will tailor it to your child’s need (sickness, more fat, less fat and so on). research benefits for baby on breastfeeding for at least a year unless you’re fine with formula :slightly_smiling_face:

I breastfeed my son till he was 2 lol then he went to a cup I didn’t know there was an age limit. But I do now.

Do it as long as you feel you and your child needs it. I did until my son was 2…then he starting biting and tweaking. You’ll know when it’s time.

As long as You and your child want to. If you want to stop at 9 months then feed formula for 2 months then milk at 11 1/2 months right before they turn 1. I still breast feed my almost 19month old, but do give her water and regular milk too. :slightly_smiling_face:

My sister works and still breastfeeds her 3 year old

I guess it works for them
:hatched_chick:

when they get on solids. i say 1 1/2 yrs. u still wanna breast feed then pump and put it in a cup.

There’s no age limit just recommendations. You can pump at work.
I let my daughter nurse until she was just over 3yo. One night she just stopped and we were done.

Stop when you feel ready. I only breastfed my twins for 4 days, then I ran into health issues so they went onto formula. They’re 8 years old now and have zero health issues (my daughter has never missed a day of creche or school, has never even had a cough or cold, and not a single childhood illness. Healthy to the point of being abnormal  ). So go work what works for you

There is NO upper limit to breastfeed or time recommended to stop. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics and the WHO mention 2 and 3 and also say “beyond” if the mother and baby are happy. So do what is best for your family. I pumped at work for my kids. I had a good environment where it worked. But some people find it more difficult. One of my children I had to stop pumping at work, she was 9 months but never did need formula. At 9 months she was eating and drinking well and she breastfed at nights so she was fine without formula during the day.
