Advice on the depo shot?

Are there any ladies that have been on the depo shot? I got pregnant while on the pill and am looking into different birth controls for after I have baby.

I got pregnant on the pill, went to the depo and got pregnant again :grimacing:
Before the pregnancy, I had random bleeding for a day or 2 at a time and a lot of migraines.

I was on the depo shot after having my son. I did not like it. I kept bleeding randomly until it ran out of my system.

I almost died because depo gave me a very large PE. I was hospitalized for 3 weeks. I only do isolated hormonal birth control now like Mirena. I’d avoid depo completely.

I have the mirena and love it

I loved my depo . Until I got pregnant on it .

I had been on the depo shot for years and it was fine for me. Didn’t get pregnant while on it.

Depo gave me bad side effects

On my first 3 months of the Depo (due again on the 15th) and have been bleeding for the last 3 weeks :expressionless:

I got pregnant on the depo shot and the pill to. The only thing that is guarenteed is not having sex… Getting tubes tied is the next best option.

I didnt stop bleeding after getting the depo shots.

Had it before, wasnt terrible but when I got off of it, I bled for like 4 months straight. :grimacing:

Don’t do it I gained like 70 pounds in less than 8 months worse decision ever

I am it’s worked great

I had my 8 year old while on depo

But I’m gaining weight

I had no weight gain but my daughters did

2 years on depo shot. No weight gain, migraines are gone, spotting stopped after a few months and I dont have a period at all now. I love it!

Don’t do depo. I was on for five years and a nurse begged me to get off it. It has a side effect of causing early onset of degenerate bone disease and took almost two years to have my last child. I now use the copper iud.

IUD is best in my opinion. I got pregnant on the pill, the depo shot and the patch. I’ve had the IUD for 3 years and I haven’t gotten pregnant.

Depo was involved in me gaining like 60 lbs in 3 months. I swore off of it. My friend later tried it, I warned her about the weight gain (she was very thin at the time) she said it wouldnt be a problem because she planned on exercising, she also gained like 80 lbs. Not everyone gains it, but those who do, gain a lot and quickly.

Edit: it also made me feel very angry all the time.

Depo works well for me I’ve been on for years I do have to say other than it taking forever to get pregnant after getting off it the first time and the decrease in sex drive I’ve never had a issues.

I had the depo shot and I bled for 3 months straight. I ended up anemic. It is different for everyone though.

The nuvaring is good, the depo I was really emotional on. My sister bought a drug test…

My doctor advised to do the iud, she said it’s the most effective form of birth control with the least amount of side affects however I chose the pill just for comfort

Had no weight gain, but made you more emotional, then usual

Depo worked great for me, i was on it for about 6 years with no problems and had no trouble getting pregnant when I was ready.

Depo baby. 3 weeks old :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I was on depo for 3 years and only problem i had was weight gain

I’m about to have my daughter it was twins lost one early on cause I was on Depo and they didn’t catch it before giving me another shot

I was on it for 8 years. I loved it.

I hated the depo shot. It completely stopped my periods (YaY) but all of my PMS symptoms got 100 times worse. I swear I thought the cramps were gonna kill me and I was so moody my mom thought the devil was coming out.

Dont. Do. It. Worst decision of my life.

I was the depo shot years ago. I was moody on it and I had weight gain. I didn’t have a problem getting pregnant after coming off of it. But I have read a lot of women have had lots of problems with it

Works 100% every time I go on it. Makes you fat and grouchy

But before my 4 yr old that’s what I was on and when I stopped to try for my baby I had multiple miscarriages before her like alot

I got pregnant on both the depo shot and the pill 🤷

Depo was horrible for me i only ended up doing 2 shots and during that time i gained weight excessively more so than with the pill also increased anxiety to the point of occasional panic attacks couldnt figure out what it was then i stopped and my anxiety completely went away and emotions are more extreme along with headaches and risk of degenerate bone disease they only recommend people to be on it for a few years

I was on depo in got pregnant

I also got pregnant on the pill and have the depo shot now! Had my period for almost two months and dont have it anymore. No other side affects.

I was on depo for a few years and it completely stopped my cycle. I ended up getting the implant Nexplanon and that was my overall favorite. The implant also stopped my periods, didn’t get cramps and the removal was no issue! :ok_hand:t3:

Was put on Depo after tubal pregnancy on the mini pill. Was on it 18 years no problems. Just recently came off all hormones to see where I am with menopause. It worked great for me. Only a little crampy and spotty around new shot time.

Depo is the reason I had seizures. It threw off my hormones SO bad that it caused me to have a seizure :sob:

Been in the depo before baby and after baby. Have nothing bad to say

I started with the depo shot after diagnosis of endometriosis in 1999. I will never do that again. It made me gain a ton of weight and my face broke out. I mean every square inch of my face had acne (cystic) and I never had issues before that. That was just my experience.

I never got pregnant on the depo but I did gain alot of weight very quickly.

I was on depo and got pregnant.

I love the depo so much my husband is fixed and I still get the shot because my periods are so bad and on it I don’t have them. No weight gain or mood swings with me from it. It’s really the only option I have though because I have seizures and the other birth controls make them worse. My advice is everyone handles different birth controls different so the way something works for us may be the total opposite for you.

Hated it … horrible mood swings ! Period stops but horrible weight gain !

I gained 50 lbs on the depo. Everyone is different. (I was 14-16)

I haaaaaated the depo. I had 2 doses of it and I reacted soooo badly. Insane mood swings, migraines and made my anxiety and depression far worse. Plus a huuuge amount of bleeding (though I naturally have problems with that and literally had a period last 1.5 years with zero stopping).
Also dont recommend the patch, I got pregnant on that :joy:

Horrible! I gained 40 pounds had horrible mood swings and migraines every day. Started to break out into hives. When it ran out and it was time to do it again the migraines and rash went away. I will never do that again!

I love depo. Was on it for 9 years.
The pill made me soo sick & I’m terrified of some birth control being inserted in me.

I also got pregnant while taking the pill so my doctor suggested depo shot. I got pregnant with my youngest son while on the depo shot…

I didn’t like the depo , it gave me really bad cramps and I didn’t like how it made me feel.

Don’t do it depo is the worst BC I’ve heard of alot of ppl still get pregnant on it. And the side effects are horrible

I was on depo for 2 years, I had only one menstrual cycle during that time. I gained like 50 lbs, it’s to be expected though…you’re stopping something natural (your period). I took calcium pills while on depo at that time. I had my son last June and got back on it last month, I haven’t experienced any bad side effects.

I loved depo! I had no symptoms no weight gain, mood swings, etc and it took my period to once every 3 months. Like a lot of people in the comments some women are genetically prone to weight gain while on depo. Rule of thumb is if you gain 6 or more pounds (with your lifestyle remaining the same) between your first and second shots you are going to continue to gain weight. So honestly you really only are going to know if you try because every woman definitely has a different experience while on depo.

I had the depo after my first son and loved it. I never had to worry about it until I got my text message reminder from my doctors office. I couldn’t lose weight though. TMI I only had a light period on my 3rd month before having to get the shot again. I got off it because I heard it takes at least a year to get pregnant again. Btw it doesnt. I got back on depo after my 2nd son. He is now 7 months old and I am breastfeeding him just fine. No drop in my milk supply. I am having no period. Occasionally get light cramps during my normal period times. I dont gain weight on it but I struggle to lose weight.

My sister and mother both gained alot of weight on the depo shot. To the point where their doctor pulled them off.

It is different for everyone. I really like it

I had my period 2 months straight after getting the shot. Never again

Depo- had my period 365 days in a row. Gained 45lbs. Bad acne. That’s my experience

No advice, just fact. I was conceived on the depo shot.

I was on the depo for 3 yrs and stopped about 5 years ago i gained a lot of weight on it, completely lost my drive, and had my period non stop for 3 months at a time. My sister was on the depo for years then she had a really bad reaction to it that caused her to go completely blind and she didnt get her vision back until she had a complete plasma exchange and the shot was completely out of her system. 2 yrs later shes at 60% vision and has spinal lesions. She thought she was never gonna see her kids faces again.

Ive been on the depo for 3 years now. There are side effects and each person reacts differently but it has worked pretty good for me. Although I feel more tired and lose motivation also not much of sex drive

Gained 30 lbs on it :flushed:

My mom got pregnant with my sister while on it.

Big nope!

I had no issues with it but keep in mind there is no birth control that is 100% so pregnancy can happen with any of them.

It messed with my cycles so badly (and when I went off off it took almost a year for any semblance of a regular cycle to return)- it also negatively affects your bone mineral density in the long run. I’ve been on the Evra patch before I had my son (went off to conceive) and I’m back on again and I’ve had zero issues with it and I love that I only have to change once a week.

Don’t do it, I was on that for like 6 months, I only got 2 shots and it really messed me up, before I went on it I never had cramps ever during my periods, after I got off it, every month I had horrible horrible keel over dieing in pain cramps the entire time, It was horrible, and that happened ever month until after I had my son, I don’t recommend it at all, I have also had issues with off and on severe pains in one side around my ovary for the past 7 years since, I’ve been to multiple different doctors about it and had multiple tests and ultrasounds and still don’t have an answer, the only thing that really ever showed up was a hemorrhagic cyst on that ovary, I’m pretty much at the point of requesting to have exploratory surgery at this point if it gets really bad again, they even tried to tell me I was making up the pain before ugh … I even had three miscarriages before my son, Idk if the shot had to do with it but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out as a factor, It’s been an absolute nightmare

I’m on the Depo shot. So far it’s been fine. Some weight gain but not a significant amount, I get some headaches after I get the shot, it last a week or two. Other then that I like it and it’s working. So👏🏻

I cried none stop on the depo jab. It made me really depressed. I only had one because it affected me so badly

Everyone reacts different. I also got pregnant in the pill. With the depo I reacted badly and was in and out of hospital for months.

I quickly gained 50 lbs when I was on it, and looked puffy (water weight) all the time. I heard it can make depression worse as well. I wouldn’t recommend it. I have nexplanton and it almost has the same side effects weight gain and worsen depression. Maybe a IUD? I’ve heard good things about those :slightly_smiling_face:

I was on the depo and I got pregnant. Lol. Nothing is 100%. I also gained weight and started dealing with acne which I’ve never had. Everyone’s body is different but I will never get the shot again.

I really like the depo shot. I disliked it before i got pregnant and had my baby but now I really like it. When I first tried it messed with my hormones a lot but this time it’s a lot better.

I say do it, I was on the depo for year. My periods stopped and when I went off it took me like 3 months and I got pregnant for my last child. I didn’t gain weight. Nothing happened.

I love depo… but it is different for everyone

Keep you’re laig close

I loved the depo I lost weight when on it. When we decided to get pregnant I didn’t get the next shot and got pregnant that month but unfortunately lost him at 12 weeks (he passed at 8 weeks. They said that it may have been because of the depo. I struggled to get pregnant after and was put on clomid to help get pregnant and now have a healthy 3 year old daughter. I would go back on it if I could but found out I have factor V leiden and am unable to be on birth control now.

I loved depo. Was on it for 10 years had a kid then back on for 5, then switched to Mirena iud. If you’re worried about it, try mirena. It uses the same hormone but provides a lower dose. So you still ovulate, less likely to gain weight, but the other protections are there to prevent fertilization and implantation. You keep it for 5 years vs going every 13 weeks for a shot. Pill is easy to mess up and get pregnant on. Depo is great, Mirena may have less side effects though. There’s lots of options.

Yeah thats why im not getting no shots or implants. Ill just do the mini pill.

I bled for 4 straight months when i got my first shot, never went back for the next. It was horrible.

Im on the patch and i absolutely love it.

I got pregnant with my twins on depo

Got pregnant with my first daughter while being on the depo

I did the depo shot once I hated it I gained a lot of weight and no periods at all while on it

I was on the deposit for 6 years, I gained weight crazy and once I got off and we decided to have kids I had an ectopic then a miscarriage about a year after being completely off the shot. Then had our son about another year later, it messed up my body a bit and I won’t get again but that’s just me.

Hey, something new and cool, way better than hormones, called condoms. Effective for a long ass time

I gained a lot of weight and got super moody on the depo. And I only did one shot. I even bled for almost the entire 3 months. My cousin had the arm implant and besides the bleeding had the same experience. There is a nonhormonal IUD I’ve considered getting. I’ve had the Mirena and the hormones mess with me pretty bad. Everyone’s experiences will differ. Hopefully you will find what’s right for you.

I have been on the depo shot for about 15 years. I love it!!. I was never trying to get pregnant though. I have been on it for pain due to my periods being so horrible. Only side effect of being on it for soooooo long is that it has put me into an early menopause. For which I’m thankful because now I can get a full hysterectomy.

Depo doesn’t make you gain weight just raises your appetite what you eat depends on what you gain! It is manageable.

Took one round of depo, bled for 2 months had to QUADRUPLE bc pills just to stop the bleeding and then gained a ton of weight :-1: also caused ovarian cancer in my aunt

Depo was my worst idea ever. Got pregnant on bc pills. Still take them only for my period now.

I did the depo shot for 10 years but then it 2 years to get pregnant with the first being a miscarriage tried birth control pills and they totally messed me up mentally

Do not do depo shot. It will make you gain weight and cystic acne. I’ve been doing the xulane patches.

I only had the depo shot once and I hated it. I had mood swings like crazy, I always felt like I was on my period but I just wasn’t bleeding. I am never getting it again.

No depo but I was very pleased with my mirena! Had it in for 5 years almost with no issues. Had it put in 6 weeks after having our girl and it didn’t hurt at all. I always had very heavy periods with horrible cramps that lasted around 7 days. Hardly any bleeding at all with mirena. If I did bleed I was able to use a lite tampon for maybe 1-2 days and no cramps! I will definitely consider another IUD after our 2nd child

I have been on this for a long time. I had the Mirena a long time ago, and had non-stop pain and cramping with it. I did keep it for the 5 years or however long it lasts. When I did get it taken out, I went right back to the depo. All that being said, I love it. I don’t remember the last time I had a period. I dread the day I have to get off of it. Not looking forward to bleeding for weeks after. I am overweight, but I don’t know if I would blame that on the shot.

I was on it I bled for a year straight. They said the first one or two it’s possible to bleed but should subside. Mine never did after the third one I was done waiting. So I stopped it. Yes a full year of that. I’m not saying it’ll happen to everyone but my daughter went through the same thing.

You really have to try it. To see. I loved it, I had no periods and I’d didnt have to worry about daily pills. I didnt like mirena, the side effects- night terrors, sweats, foggy brain. And there were times when it was uncomfortable.
But my friend had the opposite. Depo made her cranky and anxious, and she gained 15 pounds in 3 months. She loved her mirena and swears by it.
