At a loss of how to help my father in law

Things like ensure will boost his calorie intake. Also fortified milkshakes which we give to our resident’s in work. Make the milkshake as normal using full fat milk then add cream and milk powder to it. I’d also call his GP and request a referral to a dietician

Appetite stimulant from his dr and maybe ask his dr about a home health nurse if y’all don’t have one already.

Give him pb sandwich/crackers for snacks, breakfast essentials or ensure. My daughter has been underweight and they said add butter/pb to as much food as possible. But I’d talk to a doctor and they can tell u what to do and what he specifically can eat

Meal replacement shakes! Find one high in fat. We use to give them to residents when they would refuse to eat.

Give him high fat food’s. You don’t have to eat them. I know you on a diet. Otherwise maybe speak to a dietician for guidance

I was a dietary manager in a nursing home and when our residents would lose weight we added a protein supplement to their daily food intake. Encourage high protein snacks and possibly double his portions if necessary.

When my GMA was dying she had COPD, cancer and was just old. She was scrawny, would barley eat and what I had to end up doing was making her cannabis butter. I would put it on her toast in the morning and within a few hours she asking for lunch, wants some snacks, sitting up watching TV talking to me. A complete diff lady once introduced it. Honestly that kept her alive for a while :two_hearts: I’m thankful

The first step for home treatment is thick-it in their pudding…ensure and boost or other high protein shakes could help but get him into a nutritionist as soon as possible. He would also need to be checked for metabolic disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hypoglycemia. Also, ask about Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, it’s a long shot…but those are the key organs involved for vascular type. For kidney issues, low phosphorus is needed, so no coke or dark soda pop with phosphoric acid. Only natural calcium from veggies no supplements. For vascular and cardiac issues, get homocysteine levels checked- even at his age…that’s managed though folate…not folic acid.

When I was pregnant and lost 20 pounds I drank ensure like 3 times a day. Maybe that.

I had to get my daughter’s weight up as she is an athlete and went through a several inch growth spurt w/i 6 months. Protein powder sprinkled on food, protein drinks, protein “candy” bars. He needs protein to build muscle and carbs to fill out the rest. Find some supplemental protein sources from the list above that he likes and load him up!

When my daughter had cancer she got down to 80 pads. I ask a rn she told me about 2-cal it’s prescription only. It’s like 470 some calories. Vitamins and everything you need. It taste good. It put weight back on her. Boost and insure went right through her did no good. It was a god send for us. You have to have your Dr write it for you.

Ensure, boost, really any supplements that you can put in a smoothie. If he is a failure to thrive (which it sounds it), would he agree to a feeding tube?

There’s many nutrition shakes out there to help because they worked for
my mom, but he will most definitely need to see a GI doctor & dietician. I have special needs kids & taken care of my mom & for stomach, growth & diet issues we dealt with both & actually endocrinology. For kidney issues & heart
I assume he is already seeing a nephrologist & cardiologist. Please before taking any advice on Facebook I really recommend consulting his doctor(S) & getting with the proper specialists to help you out with him.

His Dr can get him supplemental nutrition They can refer him to a nutritionist/ dietician who can work out a plan

Have him drink Ensure or something like that with meals and snacks. Doctor it up if you want.

I’m type one diabetic and even though he may not be. Have you tried a high carb and protein diet for him?? Maybe do some research and try it. I know I need carbs to take insulin and they instantly make me gain weight. Maybe try that. Also could you get him tested for diabetes?

See a dietician. Don’t be giving him protein drinks/powders until a professional has assessed him and confirmed this is appropriate as it could cause other issues rather than helping him.

I give my son doucal powder. 3 scoops 3 times a day. He gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks. Just mix it in with any drink. It don’t have a taste.

Ask his Dr if you can get an appt with a dietitian as his cage giver. They should be able to help

He needs a nutritionist could help you too I think it’s what I plan on doing

You can begin by taking him to a Doctor and Dietitian.

Consult a physician, he is seriously underweight and needs expert care, medical testing. Your support.

I would consult a physician…

Medical card would help with appetite, I would speak with a nutritionist.

Ask his Doctor for a Dietician/Nutrition consult, they will check lab work and make recommendations

Ensure helped my grandparents

Needs to see a dietician.

Literally anything you can get him to eat!

Do NOT give him boost or ensure with his existing health problems without having him evaluated by a nutritionist first. You could make things worse.

Dieticians will help call social service or VA

Talk with his doctor but if he’s sin really bad shape enjoy the time with him and let em have what he wants the doctors told me that when my dad was dying

Ask about a feeding tube

Is he struggling to eat? Did he have a stroke? If he is having a difficult time eating, or swallowing or keeping down he should be seeing a gastroenterologist. They can talk with you about options like a feeding tube. If that route is take do not let them push ensure or any kind of canned formula. You can blend anything and tube it. Otherwise start making him smoothies and adding fruit, veggies, hemp and flax, peanut butter or pb protein powder, and extra creamy oat milk or vanilla almond milk. However he has patients rights. If he is of sound mind, you cannot make him do anything.

You need to talk with his dr asap for him.

I was very sick and losing too much weight this last year and my dr prescribed and ordered me certain nutritional drinks- these are not the same as just any Ensure off the store shelf.
I also had several specialists i had to go see and was admitted into the hospital several times while the doctors worked out what worked out whats the best treatments and medications for me.
They told me a feeding tube would be the next step but luckily i finally started to get better and regain my health.

Ensure premier protein any of those types of drinks they have a bunch of flavors and they will get him the nutrients he needs even if he’s not packing on the pounds since he’s older he will still get everything he needs even if he doesn’t have an appetite he can drink them but also still give it to him with meals

Calling a nutritionist or dietitian can help not just him but you too. Help find you both a well balanced diet that can not only help you lose weight but for him to gain as well.

I’m a caregiver for seniors. One of the most common things we see is them being underweight and malnutrition. The ensure drinks help to get calories and other things they need. You can do 2-3 a day to help him.

Boost or ensure. Or do slim fast then have him eat a meal afterwards. But he definitely needs to see a nutritionist

If he isnt diabetic or in renal distress/failure or on dialysis

Mac and cheese, potatoes,
Ensure.

When a person gets older they burn more calories than they take in.

Get meal replacement or protein drinks. I drink fairlife core power drinks they have 42g of protein. Redmeat sometimes is bad for hearts so idk if he can eat redmeat. I think the healthiest way would be protein to add weight. Maybe talk to his Dr and see what they recommend. For weightloss for you limit your carb intake to 100g or less and up your protein intake don’t eat junk food or fastfood and try protein shakes they will fill you up and help curb hunger.

Wouldn’t it be better to ask his Dr what to do?

Zyprexa 2.5 mg daily or megace
RX from your doctor

I surely would get a consult with a dietitian for that. With his vascular and other issues I’m sure it’s so tricky. Best wishes to your family.

You’ll be surprised what you can’t have with bad kidneys. I know I have them. Many things y’all are suggesting are horrible on kidneys. You need protein but can’t have a lot, not much dairy either if any, not many oats or nuts. Things are very limited. Please get a dietitian or Dr to tell you what you need. Do not follow many of these suggestions. High protein, magnesium and potassium will make kidneys worse.

Ensure drinks, protein drinks…when my dad couldn’t eat much while he had cancer the doctors recommend these and it worked great

Please consult a physician. It could be as simple as cooking separate high calorie meals for him or protein shakes but, it may not be. You may need a diet plan from each doctor he sees and build a meal plan for him based on that. It could also be caused by medications that he takes suppressing his appetite…it could be a combination of things.

There are some prominent drinks you can buy also maybe ask his doctor if you put creatine in his drink if that could help, I know its for working out but if you don’t work out it turns into fat so may help.

First off, you need to talk to his doctor. The boost drinks with high protein has a lot of nutrients in it.

Have the doctor prescribe him Ensure with the extra calories.

Talk to his Healthcare team before you take advice from strangers on the internet.

Get him some t h c and help him be hungry. Amazing how it helps the elderly thrive! Wonderful medicine!

Doctors apt for sure :white_heart:

Protein shakes made with whole milk

Beef or red meat is actually more healing. And fruits and veggies really are not enough to help gain weight as much as people think. Where the weight gaining calories actually are is in your baked things. Breads cake cookies and anything sugar based. I myself love tootsie rolls… by chance is your father-in-law diabetic too?? First of all call and talk to his dietitian cuz they will tell you that in a diabetic diet there are no real calories to speak of thatll help you gain weight. I wish there was a real way to really talk to you about this and what may help your sick and skinny father in law…

Walgreens has a powder to mix called weight gain. Plus wheat germ in milk shakes

If you would like to msg me I could give you some great ideas that has helped many clients of mine through weight and illness

My son loved the high calorie shakes

Some kind of supplement drink?

Making your own milkshakes you can different flavors and even texture just a thought

Protein drinks, starch foods, hamburgers, Eggs, and get him on vitamins to replace the foods he chooses not to eat.

Oatmeal ensure carbs …shakes good also ensure pudding now…other products…

Have u tried protein shakes u can please shakes or the powder and make them at home yourself

Protein shakes ,smoothies, look into at home care for him even if it is part time

Protein shakes or flavorless protein powder

You can grind up veggies and put them in other things. Sneaky, but it works. For instance, I used to make a beef/veggie soup. I used to grate cabbage into it. It just disappeared during cooking and the kids didn’t even know. I also added grated turnips or jicama to brownies. You can get away with so much in meatloaf!
