My 17 year old has been with her boyfriend for a few years and they are sexually active. She is on birth control but switched to the pill and said she is having negative reactions to it liek weight gain, acne and low libido…is this side effects of the birth control? is there another birth contorl that will not cause these issues?
Help a mama out and respond anonymously on our forum. Best birth control with low side effects for my teenager?
The IUD works really well with minimal to no side effects and it takes away the hassle of daily pill taking and remembering to go in for a shot. Also it lasts a few years which gives you the ability to worry less while she’s starting her life.
Birth control sucks, the IUD has the least amount of symptoms, but they normally only offer that after childbirth.
The implant you can get into your arm, I’ve noticed the least amount of side effects reported from friends.
My daughter felt same way and she stopped taking it
I would recommend you look into the IUD before the nexplanon
I started the depo provera shot in high school due to really bad periods and cysts on ovaries. 30 now and use it for no periods and pain management
I got the implant at 15! Nexplannon in my arm.
It made me sensitive to the sun, I would get nauseous but that stopped after like 3 months. I had it in for 4 years.
I’ve had the IUD now for a year and a half and no issues
Look into the depo shot.
There’s mixed feelings about all different birth controls because everybody’s body is different. For me the Nexplanon implant in the arm worked great for me. It also lasts 3 years
Depo shot was horrible for me.
I like the iud but had to beg for one before my first kid.
Afterwards I used the arm implant, which was great and didn’t have any side effects.
All birth controls will do this…she can switch to try something else like the neplanon or IUD but sadly for some women this is just how it is…
I have lots of issues with my ovary and stuff and the lightest pills I find don’t change my hormones much are Alysena
The pill and patch have always given me the negative side affects. I have been on the depo needle off and on for years and never had an issue. I first started taking it at 17. Even between pregnancy and I am currently 9 months pp and I been back on it since my daughter was 3 months. Don’t have any issue.
Low libido? I’d keep her on that one
Absolutely do not ever get her the shot. it will make her gain sooo much weight. & the side effects are garbage. And someday when she does wanna get pregnant it can literally take years.
I have the kyleena iud and it’s low hormones. I have tried every birth control out there & this has been the best one.
The arm one sucks I literally bled for a year straight on it. It was making me anemic.
As a teen my favorite was depo shot. I still prefer it because it works best for my body. She may have to try a couple different kinds before she finds one that works well with hers.
Nexplnon(everyone is different) but a majority saw little to no symptoms… I had 2… each for 3 years the week I took it out I got pregnant… so it works just fine & does the job lol
Kylena is a great IUD! That’s the one I had and I think it’s a 5 year one. Didn’t have any side effects that I could recall, my periods actually lightened. The copper IUD lasts longer (about 10 years I think) but it’s known to cause heavier periods.
I got the Liletta IUD, but it was after I had my two boys (3 years apart). I ended up pregnant on the pills (with my second). Only side effects, aside from the initial discomfort of insertion, I had some nausea as I got accustomed to the hormones, and cramping. Very light spotting during “periods” and some moodiness. Otherwise libido, weight and acne have not been issues. Everyone reacts differently to hormone supplements of any sort. She just has to test things out for a month or so and see how she reacts. Best of luck mama to your girl
Try joining the estrogen dominant group on Facebook. They give really good advice about birth control for young teens.
All birth control makes us women gain weight but doctors wont tell you that
The Nuva Ring is the only birth control I’ve ever been on that doesn’t make me angry! The pills really messed up my hormone levels and personality —- I’ll never go back to them again.
P.S. I don’t even feel the Nuva Ring, and it has never come out. You only replace it once a month
Get a vasectomy for the boyfriend. Boom. #easybutton
I never had good results with any birth control. Pills, shot, ring, patch, 2 different types of IUDs…they all have given me crappy side effects. Oh, not to mention I still got pregnant on all of them…even the IUDs.
The pill, NOT the shot
Everyone will react differently to all types of birth control. Personal opinion after being on pills and shot and researching like crazy is to not be on it all. She needs to track her cycle as birth control (condoms work too) especially at such a young age. If there’s a time when she may be unsure if she’s ovulating or not there are tests she can use to absolutely sure so she can take extra caution. Good luck and research
I use the xulene patch. I have no side effects, I would not switch. I’ve tried the others and this is the only one that doesn’t have me down and out in cramping pain
Can I honestly just put out there that I love. That your open with your teen instead of punishing we all start somewhere and tho it’s a big change a lot of parents freak on teens but you’ve gone above and helped her stay safe !
I think I’m maybe the only one that absolutely loved the weight gain on the pill lol
best to ask your doctor honestly
Please DO NOT consider the copper IUD! It will poison you…doctors won’t tell ya that! It’s all money!!
She could try the copper IUD. No hormones. There are a few side effects like a heavier flow and cramping but that usually subsidies in a few months to a year
No pills to take and no forgetting.
Definitely speak with her dr and see what they recommend!
Every womens body reacts differently to all kinds of contraceptives. It’s best to speak with the doctor and decide then.
For me and my daughter we both get the shot. We both get excruciating cramps and periods before we took the shot and it helps tremendously. Barely have periods but when we do it’s a lot less bleeding and cramping involved.
I have a injection every 3 months it’s amazing no periods just spotting the the last two weeks before my next is due no other side effects x
I never had any negative reactions to the pill that was estrogen free. I forget what the name of it was though
All birth control has side effects because it’s not natural to stifle our natural flow and bodies that way. She’ll have to live with the one she can deal with🤷♀️
I loved my IUD. I’ve had the Skyla and the Kyleena.
You are worried about your 17 having a low libido…?
These are common symptoms of any birth control. Everyone’s body reacts differently to different ones so she’s gunna have to try different ones out to find out which one works for her. As a teen I personally liked the nuva ring. It was easy. As an adult post 3 kids I use progestin only pill, mainly because I’m breastfeeding, mostly no hormones to mess with you. But with a progestin only pill you need to make sure you take it everyday at the same time for it to be most effective. If you don’t or miss you have a higher chance of getting preggo. Everything has its own side affects too. The shot, depo, causes bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis. So that’s not recommended long term. Iud have been known to travel the body and cause issues for people as far as needing a hysterectomy for it perforating the uterus. So personally I would stick to a pill or nuva ring.
All birth control runs the same risks. Of weight gain etc etc also blood clots.
Now I was evra patch from 13 to 21 0 issue 0 weight gain ir any symptoms only thing I didn’t get was pregnant.
As a teenager I had to use a very low estrogen pill. Dont remember the name and I’m sure theres a million different versions. At her age they came out with a patch, I used that for some years. But I didnt start getting the shot until I was 21 or so, did that for an uber long time. Got an implanon after that, 5 years. Went back to the pill and got pregnant at 29 went back to the nexplanon, newer version of implanon, ever since.
I was Tri-Sprintec for years and absolutely LOVED it. Didn’t mess with my moods or my eating habits, never gained weight and it didn’t mess with my sex drive
First time I got on bc in my 20s I gained a lot like overnight. In my 30s after kids and married my libido is down obvs. But the only effect I’ve seen is I’ve gotten “sun spots” on my face. But those are all common.
Nuva ring. Has no hormones that cause anything like that.
Depo made me sick n had cysts n gain weight never take that again I have implant n have sence n no problems for me what ever U choose ask ya doctor bout side effects etc on each one
Part of being mature enough to have sex is being mature enough to get on/educate yourself about and try different birth controls at your own risk bcuz u could gain weight, could have endless period bleeding, low libido, hormonal issues etc etc etc bcuz there is no “good” “healthy” birth control options out there. None. they all come with complications/side effects Its part of Our responsibilities as sexually active women to come to terms with that before we have casual sex outside circumstances wed want to get pregnant within… and choose bc side effects or pregnancy side effects…pregnancy causes all those symptoms and side effects too so its a choice to choose which u can handle in exchange for safer premarital sex without the consequences of pregnancy sucks but lets be honest. All birth control sucks at some point. Find a man who will still be attracted to u while u figure out how to not get pregnant that should matter more than ur weight or acne to him and her! come to terms with the possibility of Some kind of weight gain bcuz its close to inevitable on all forms.
Of hormonal contraceptives This is her 1/2 of the responsibility as a sexually active female to be on birth control if she wants to enjoy sex without pregnancy scares. Tell her to try anything she and her dr. feel comfortable trying pay close attention to her body and if shes not comfortable or satisfied move onto another contraceptive option👍
I had my tubes tied
Worse thing I ever done.
No matter what please don’t do what I did
Almost any birth control you get will have side effects.
That’s common for some birth controls. arm implant or IUD are very effective and won’t be “forgotten” by a young person who gets busy with school, work, extra curricular things, and college prep. I’m 43 and still forget to put on a bra sometimes so I knew younger that taking a pill daily at the same time wouldn’t work for me, at all.
The pill and injection made me ill amd bleed worse unfortunately it’s trial and error hope u find something soon for her
I have the nexplanon implant. Lasts 3 years. You can get it taken out before though. I like it. No side effects for me personally
I used the kyleena IUD. It’s supposed to have the lowest hormone effect to your body.
It worked for me. I only took it out because I got my tubes tied.
I was on the patch when I was her age and it made me into the ultimate bitch you couldn’t be around me and be near me and after that I had the worst cramps and bleeding. They had a big lawsuit with the patch I was on
Has she read taking charge of your fertility? That’s a must read for anyone with a active reproduction system… and then look at options that might not wreck her system for life, like a barrier method, Caya, tracking, etc. Part if participating in adult behaviors is also being responsible to be as responsible as you can. They all come with risk. All of them, unless you choose a natural option, and hormonal options aren’t natural. Has she had real informed consent as far as side effects and risks?
The first birth control pill I was on I had these side effects, talk to your doctor about the side effects and look for a different pill. They all are different. I’m on aviane 28 now and I don’t have libido issues or weight gain side effects, I have been noticing more acne than usual though.
Im on depo injection but also that give me weight gain and coming out with spots
The copper IUD has no hormones in it at all. After switching my birth control atleast 5 times I decided no hormones was the only way to go.
Any birth control with estrogen will have Sid effects. Talk to your doctor about what’s best for her.
Unfortunately the pill is the safest form of birth control with the least amount of side effects. Shot can make you bleed and weight gain, implant and iud will stop your period and cause weight gain. There is the copper iud that last 10 yrs but it’s huge and probably wouldn’t be a good option for someone who has never had kids
Personally I got nexplanon and I love it but everyone is different and everyone’s bodies have different reactions to different birth controls. It’s best to discuss it with her ob/ gyn and try out a couple different ones till she finds what works best for her
I have the (nexplanon) arm implant and so far I might get two small periods a month. Had it for 4 years!
The copper iud has no hormones so that would probably be her best option.
You’re concerned about … low libido … for your 17 year old … I recommend an iud … copper has no hormones. Plastic she won’t get a period anymore but has minimal hormones.
I am on nexplanon and a friend is also. I’m having bad side effects and want it taken out. However it’s working perfectly for her.
What works for one may not work for the other. You can read reviews all day but only you can decide based on trying different ones.
Best advice: Talk with your doctor
My advice would just be to have her discuss her side effects and what her best option would be with her doctor. They will know what’s best for her specifically.
I never had borth control as a teen. But when I got older I used the nuva ring and got pregnant within a month. My sister had the depo shot and she had weight gain. I guess she’s going to have to explore different kinds and see what works best for her
The mini pill doesn’t have all the extra
Talk to her doctor. My mom did the pill when I was 16. The pill and the patch were the only ones I didn’t have side effects for. Her doctor should be able to help figure out what may work best for her.
They should be using condoms. No side effects.
Why ask a bunch of strangers. Go to the doctor.
I was on yaz and beyaz when I was on the pill. It was great. Shorter periods, less cramping, no weight gain, actually helped with my acne.
EDIT:
When I was ready to get pregnant and stopped taking it. I waited for my period to come then we tried and got pregnant right away. So no issues with having trouble or it taking a while.
I had been on it for a few years at the time.
Yep. It’s called keeping ya legs shut.
I find the patch great. I had negative reactions to everything else
Condoms. And yes those could be from the BC. The pill always made me throw up. To this day I still won’t take it.
I have only ever been on the nexplanon and it’s been great! I’ve been on it ever since I had my daughter when I was 15. Then got it taken out at 20 and had my son and now I’m back on it!
You should ask a doctor…
Please take her to a family planning clinic or her obgyn. She will likely have to explore several options before she finds a good fit. All bc besides condoms come with side effects and they can vary from person to person. Good on you and her for taking the proper precautions.
They all have issues but it’s easy to forget to take the pill
I’m on Lolo and have been for 5+ years (I’m 23) Ive talked to my doctor about different methods and this one works well for me it helped immensely with my acne and I didn’t have any weight gain
I would definitely recommend she talk to her doctor about this one and see if it would be a good option
I was wary of the shot and the implant and iuds because it’s not easily reversible if there is adverse reactions but that’s just me, my mum had bad reactions to them also
Birth control can cause depression in the future. Wish someone wouldn’t warned me. The copper IUD doesn’t put out any hormones tho
Depot shot works great
They all have terrible side effects for some people unfortunately. I’d talk to a dr to see the best options. A lot of women are happy with IUD. Never do the depo shot in my opinion
The pill has the least side effects especially for young women
I couldn’t remember to take the pills. I had to get an IUD and it’s worked wonders for me. No pregnancy no period no cramps nothing. Although it does hinder me from losing weight, but I’m on metformin for diabetes and that helps losing weight
Sounds like u need something more long term a pill is the worst idea for birth control last the day it’s easily forgotten very bad idea same with patch and so on. I would do the iud or nexplanon that goes in ur arm .
A got the marina and ain’t had a problem with it xxx
Pretty much all bc comes with side affects of some kind and none are 100% effective.
Best advice…go to the family planning clinic and they’ll talk her through all options available.
Coil is brilliant imo but advice against the copper one. I had terrible problems with that one and it works by leaking copper into the body …I know the others release hormones but at least those are already present in our bodies .
To avoid accidents on fertile days, combine thee pill or IUD with a diaphragm. Doubles the protection!!!
They all have side effects. Blood clots, strokes if taken for long periods of time can happen too.
Her best bet is to see her gyno, have blood work done to see which may have fewer.
ANNOVERA ring.
It’s good for a year at a time, she can remove it for a period each month AND there’s an app to help remind when to take it out/put it back in.
As someone who has tried just about every form of birth control, the ring is the best. No negative side effects!
Speak to her doctor about ParaGard. It’s a non-hormonal IUD. The ParaGard device is a T-shaped plastic frame that’s inserted into the uterus. Copper wire coiled around the device produces an inflammatory reaction that is toxic to sperm and eggs, preventing pregnancy. She can have it inserted for up to 10 years.
I had this after my twins were born. It stopped my period and all PMS symptoms. It’s not the same for everyone. Her periods may be irregular after insertion or they may disappear all together.
I just got paid $7789 working off my laptop this month. And if you think that’s cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $ 12038 her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less.
This is what I do… https://millionsworth340.pages.dev/
You can borrow my 3yo for a few hours
Talk to somebody’s at Planned Parenthood . Way to go for looking after your daughter and teaching her right. I commend you. Bravo
Talk to your pharmacist. They can help you figure out which pills have which side effects. They have access to information that can help. Hope you find help.
My kids uses the nuvaring! She likes it and I used it also and I really liked it!
