Did anyone else take anxiety meds while pregnant?

I’m pregnant, and once I found out, I quit taking my prescription for anxiety. I know it’s not recommended. Recently after talking with my dr, I feel I need to go back on, but I wanted to know if anyone else has taken anxiety meds during pregnancy. And if so, was the baby healthy? Any issues related to the meds?

They put me on an antidepressant that helped my anxiety because dependent on what prescription it is, it could be bad for the baby

I did! Everything was good! Took buspirone

If your taking a benzo I’d stop because the baby will go thru withdrawals.

Dr kept me on a low dose of buispar which seems to help a little

I take Zoloft and my doctor told me it was more dangerous for me to be off it than stay on. There are meds that are safe to take while pregnant and little to no risk to baby. Your doctor will let you know of any risks.

I was taking Zoloft through out my pregnancy. I just had to lower my dose since I was on a higher dose before getting pregnant.

I took Lexapro and my daughter is 17 months and has a brain defect and has seizures. I’m not saying that’s why she has them but doctors are looking into it.

I currently take busipar as needed, 22 weeks pregnant. You just need to find one that is safe to take while pregnant, definitely talk to your OB.

I know some one who took anxiety meds during pregnancy. Baby was healthy but on the small side at birth. Around 5lbs.

I took prozac and my baby was born 8 pounds and perfectly healthy

I have taken them w all 6 of my pregnancies. The worst health issue any were born w was one had acid reflux as a baby and outgrew it before their 1st birthday. It just happens, wasn’t caused by the meds I took.

Ob will precribe a new one that won’t affect baby that’s what my on done and told my primary to keep me on it tell I delivered but ob wound up having to refill my prescription each month be cause my primary wouldn’t

I take Prozac 20mg once a day and buspar 15mg twice a day.

I was on Prozac and told it was safe… our son went through withdrawals and has forms of autism… I didn’t take it with any of our other kids and none of them had any medical issues

I have struggled mightily this pregnancy and finally told my dr I thought i needed something. She said she would prescribe it but that I would need to come off of it 4 weeks before delivery due to potential WD symptoms. Had I been brave and asked for something earlier in my pregnancy I would have absolutely gone on meds but I am 33 weeks already so it seemed pointless for me. Talk with your doctor and talk with the prescribing dr as well! See what they think collectively and decide what’s right for you.

If you don’t trust your doctor, please find a new one.

Be careful… n research the medications on ur own also… some Drs DNT look into the risk or side effects of taking a schedule C drug while pregnant and will jus prescribe wht is common

Yes. Its really depends on the person. If the pros outweighs the cons. Ex panic attacks leading to hyperventilating , not being able to eat, etc. Try to be easy on yourself. Pm if you have ques

Sertraline 200mg the whole way through, no problems at all

I took fluxotein from 8 weeks with my daughter and she was born with heart problems. Noone has ever told me it was the meds. But when I read the leaflet to see if I could breast feed…it says can cause cardiac defects of taken in early pregnancy. It could just be bad luck but I will never forgive myself.

I took zoloft and my child is 2.5 and healthy

Yes. Bupropion. Waited until second trimester.

I was rx’d wellbutrin, but I don’t think I took it very long. Pregnancy evened me out in that department, strangely enough. I mean, I kept my anger issues, but not my panic disorder, lol. A friend of mine may have taken something, though… Nicole Perugini, if you have anything to add for this anonymous poster, please do. If not, I can say we both had healthy babies.

I was on Zoloft and Xanax when I found out I was pregnant— I stopped taking the Xanax, continued on Zoloft, and my son was measuring WAY too small until I took myself off everything at 35 weeks- and he was born at 40 weeks almost 10 pounds. :woman_shrugging:t2:

The doctors wouldnt advise u go nck on hem if it wasnt safe. Some medications are classed as more safer to take in pregnancy as they have more research. I took my sertraline for my depression and anxiety when i was pregnant and my daughter is healthy. They will just monitor you and possibly put u on a lower dose x

Chances are they won’t give you much, if anything, because most medications are category x.

I’ve been on Lexapro my entire pregnancy, currently 26 weeks and so far baby boy is measuring ahead and very healthy. He has a small calcium deposit on his heart the doctors are monitoring but they said not to worry, usually goes away on its own. I haven’t been worried about the Lexapro until reading this :disappointed:

Zoloft here, a low dose. My son was born experiencing some possible WD from the medication. Shook a little but only lasted about 2 days. I was told it was perfectly normal and he was okay. No issues today

Prozac with mine. No issues.

I was told to switch from Paxil to Zoloft 10 years ago and my daughter hasn’t had any issues. I ended up back on Paxil bc it’s better for me and was on it the whole pregnancy with my second one is is 2. No issues either time. I think for me it would have been harder on me and the babies to come off.

My doctor explained to me that it’s more harmful to your baby if you go off medication’s. If you were to suffer an anxiety attack or have a psychosis it could put your baby in more harm. Of course, this depends greatly on what medication your prescribed.

I have taken Sertraline (generic Zoloft,100 mg/day) through all 3 of my pregnancies and 18 months of nursing per child and never had any negative side effects. From what my dr told me, it is the safest one for pregnant/nursing moms. Both my kids were full term, large babies with no health issues at all. I’m currently still pregnant with the third but don’t expect things to be much different this time around.

Me!!! He gave me the medicine that is given to women with extreme belly itchiness! My baby boy came out healthy :slightly_smiling_face: & it helped my anxiety so much

I was on Xanax for anxiety and celexa for depression. I continued taking celexa which is safe during pregnancy . I had to stop the Xanax until i quit breast feeding.

I wouldn’t risk it. Too many birth defects are caused by prescription pills, many deemed “relatively safe”. I may get some hash for this but I would honestly recommend cannabis. Indica for anxiety, just a tiny bit to help you calm down. They have been trying for years to find evidence that cannabis causes any problems with unborn babies and have been unable to do so. The old studies people cite, they researchers did not account that most of their patients studied smoked cannabis, yes, but also smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol while pregnant, both of which we know conclusively causes harm to unborn babies. Do the research, mama, and do what you feel is best for you and baby :purple_heart:

I was on cipralex my whole pregnancy. The only thing it caused was some withdrawal symptoms in my daughter for the first couple days, and I didnt end up breastfeeding because the symptoms would have continued for the entire time I was breastfeeding as well. I have OCD and anxiety and couldnt go off my meds because I was afraid of dropping to a bad place again, my doctor said it was safe while pregnant, and then she came and had some withdrawals but those ended once the medication was completely out of her system, about 2 or 3 days and it was little double breaths once in a while, no shakes or anything extreme.

I took busphirone. It’s safe during pregnancy. I still take it now over a year later.

Mine were adjusted to all category B meds. If your anxiety is that bad I’m sure it’s better to be on something. The baby can feel all your emotions and stress. Try to put some ear buds in and listen to some breathing apps🤗. You got this mama

I went off my meds a week before I got pregnant and havent needed them since. I saw a therapist for the majority of my pregnancy which helped a ton. I was on a low dose since I have other hormone related issues and he didnt wanna overwhelm my body.

I did CBD. For anxiety and all the muscle issues I had.
My son has no issues.

I’m on Zoloft and my son of due in a week so far no problem

I’m taking citalopram & am pregnant :woman_shrugging:t2: all seems fine xx

You should never just stop taking medications.

When I was pregnant with my third child I was on antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds. My doctor told me it was safe to continue, but I just had a bad feeling about it and stopped anyway. My baby was healthy, but three years later there was a big class-action lawsuit about birth defects from the same meds I was told we’re safe. So, bottom line, even if they think it’s safe now they might find out a few years later that it’s actually not. Look into natural and bio-feedback remedies for your anxiety, good luck and congratulations!

I know of a family where she took anxiety meds and their newborn son had to have open heart surgery at birth and many thru the years!

I used anxiety meds while I was pregnant. 2 different ones. My baby was healthy. We did have to stay for 4 days at the hospital because a neonatal pharmacist said it would be best to monitor for withdrawal. No issues with withdrawal. He is still healthy 8 months old now

Yes, I did. I had such severe anxiety attacks that my OB-GYN had my taking anxiety meds, antidepressants, sleeping pills and anti nausea meds. She said that I could not have a healthy baby if I was not healthy and stable. Our daughter is 7 and very healthy! Do what you need to take care of you❤

In my opinion, if being on medication is more of a necessity for you, then you should take it. Ideally, they don’t want you on any, BUT your mental health is just as important as your physical health! I’m on three different meds right now to help me. One is as needed, but I feel more comfortable this way than being off my medication. I refuse to do that to my family again, but that is a different story and a very different situation.

I did. My obgyn and the dr that prescribed me the anxiety meds both said it was fine to continue taking. My ob actually said me having a panic attack or being very stressed could cause problems for the baby, so it was important for me to stay on it.

I take Lamotrigine and Zoloft. I’m 23 + weeks pregnant and my ultrasounds have been perfect. There are medications that are to safe to take durning pregnancy. Please consult your doctor before changing or getting off your meds.

I did! Took all my regular medicine (including an antidepressant) and then we had to add anxiety meds because I developed terrible anxiety during my pregnancy. My son was born at 39 weeks, 8 lbs. 6oz. Perfectly healthy. He’s 15 months now and hasn’t had any health problems more than a cold!

There are meds that are safe to take when pregnant, definitely tell your ob how you are feeling generally they will prescribe prozac and then once baby is born just tell your pedi that you took prozac while pregnant and the pedi will look for signs of irritability in the baby as it can cause that several weeks after birth but it goes away on its on.

Yes…i took anxiety meds with both my younger kids. My ob said they were perfectly safe. BOTH came out to be causing birth defects within a year of my baby being born. Theyre both fine, thank God. But im less likely to trust what the dr says is safe now.

I took my prescription for my anxiety while pregnant, and gave birth to a healthy baby girl in June. There are certain medications that are safe to take. Talk to your OB. Every pregnancy is different and mental health is still very important during pregnancy and after.

The meds I took was my thyroid meds and half of a vicodin because of migraines. My obygn told me take it and so did my neurologist dr. My daughter was born at 38 weeks 7 days, weight 6lbs 10ozs. Definitely talk to your dr. Good luck!

It depends on the medication on the risks honestly. I had to stop taking one of my meds during my pregnancies, and another I was able to take up until a month before giving birth (propranolol, which I take for my anxiety and OCD). It’s definitely best to listen to your doctors advice and talk about potential risks with them. With me taking propranolol, I could have taken it up until giving birth, however I discussed it with my doctor and decided it was best to stop a month before birth because it can cause sleepy/lazy babies and can cause temporary respiratory issues until the medication wears off the baby. So because I didn’t want to chance that since I have a history of going into labor between 32 and 37 weeks, I decided to stop taking it around 28/29 weeks to be safe. My pregnancies/babies were not affected by it at all. Zero breathing issues even with my early babies. We were able to go home 24 hours after their births because they had zero health issues. (Also to clarify, my earliest babies were born at 35 weeks, but I have went into labor at 32 weeks, and they didn’t get my labor stopped until I was 6cm, so I didn’t actually give birth to any of my kids until 35 weeks)

I took pristiq the whole time. Baby was fine. Lactation specialist said this medication does show up in the breast milk more than some other medications but not to worry because my mental health needs to be a priority, not treated like an option.

Don’t ever go off meds without speaking to your medical professional. Facebook is definitely not the right place to ask. They’ll have you taking a walk in circles chanting and using essential oils for it. Talk to all your Drs and follow their direction

I took Zoloft with my first (until I knew I was pregnant- 8/9 weeks). He was born with premature arterial contractions, a floppy heart valve and a heart murmur. He was in the NICU for four days. All the issues worked themselves out. Thank the lord. He’s 10 now. Zoloft has been linked to heart problems but there’s no telling if there is a cause/effect relationship.

Not anxiety but I couldnt hold food down my whole pregnancy at the time they said the medicine they gave me was safe and my child came out with a cleft lip and could had been so much more find something natural or therapy will help

You can talk to your doctor about the side effects. I’m currently pregnant and take the generic brand of Zoloft. It would be more stress to be off. She said the side effects to baby are very low if any.

Talk to your doctor. There are meds that are safe while pregnant and honestly it might be better to take them if you have debilitating anxiety. I did while I was pregnant and my Son ended up having an adrenaline issue. I suggest you talk to your doctor and weigh out the risk verses benefits.

Took Celexa and Wellbutrin during my last pregnancy and she’s 5 years old now with no health issues. I wasn’t on anything for anxiety or depression for my first two and both my boys have anxiety problems and my 1st had FPIES, has chronic abdominal and head migraines and my 2nd has asthma. All 3 had severe acid reflux but in different ways.

I took a narcotic during pregnancy. I have an invisible disability that causes chronic pain. My doctor’s were all on board and in communication with each other. My sweet girl is perfect❤️

I wish you luck with that I know where you’re coming from a lot of it is due to the pregnancy your hormonal imbalance your whole body changes but do take care of it nip it in the bud make sure you and the baby are safe while you’re doing it I wish you the best of luck and I’ll say a prayer for you as well

I took a B complex vitamin, got more sleep and made sure I had someone to talk to. It helped me through a rough patch during my pregnancy. Praying for your anxiety.

I never taken anxiety meds in my life but with all 3 of my pregnancy my anxiety and OCD sky rocket. It sucks it really does. But it won’t last forever at least for me.

I’m on Sertraline now and am currently trying to get pregnant - totally safe to be on it, especially on low doses. I took it while I was nursing my daughter, and I look back and probably should have been on it during my pregnancy too.

I continued taking mine during my pregnancy and baby was fine just discus with your dr that the one yiu are on is safe also make sure they increase the dosage in the last trimester as your hormones increase u learned that the hard way

Yes! I took Zoloft for all of my pregnancies. It was safer for my babies for me to be medicated.

I took all of my regular meds while pregnant including my anxiety meds. My doctor said as long as I took them as prescribed then it would be fine. You need to be ok for your baby to be ok. So if you need them you should take them

I did, I was taking a low dose of zoloft. My baby is now 18mo & thriving! Not a single problem came from me taking my medication👍

I was on mine the whole time I was pregnant. He said it would be dangerous for me to take me off. My son was full term and healthy, the only thing I couldn’t do was breastfeed. The meds made him lethargic…so bottle it was! No problem

With my first child I chose to stop taking my antidepressant. When he was about 4 weeks old, I suffered a bad case of postpartum and was committed to the hospital on a 72 hour hold. When I had my daughter 2 years later, I chose to continue on my AD and didn’t have any postpartum. Just make sure your meds aren’t a category c. Well at least that’s what it was 15 years ago. The classes may have changed by now. You aren’t going to help your baby if you are suffering mentally. Many meds are safe. Good luck!

I quit my anxiety meds while pregnant. I look at it like this: caffeine is discouraged those meds must be altering the baby.

I’ve taken bipolar meds with all 3, my middle child’s foot turned off to the side but with stretches it’s completely normal! If you feel you need it, take it
You need to be a healthy mom for happy babies!

I took zoloft from about the beginning of my second trimester all the way into postpartum. My son turned out absolutely perfect and healthy.

And I should mention I have endometriosis and PCOS (for many years now) and my son is 11.5 years and he was born with asbergers and high anxiety … I did NOT take meds with him.

My daughter is 8.5 years old, I took anxiety meds with her and she was perfectly healthy.

Talk to your OB doc. They are the one who is going to know which meds are safe during pregnancy. Being continually anxious isn’t good for a growing baby. They may have holistic treatments for you or a medicine other than you are on that will help and be safe for baby.

I took celexa during my pregnancy, (also tried several others to see what wouldnt make me sick) and my 6yr old currently takes prozac and had adhd asd. No way to prove they are related, but something to consider. I would continue taking them if you feel like you need them though. I took them because the benefit outweighed the risk. Sometimes it does.

I take meds for depression and anxiety I also quit cold turkey after I found out. Not recommended but I felt i just couldn’t take em in good conscience. They have pregnancy safe ones but they still come with risk and aren’t as effective (i at least tried but they didn’t nothing for me) My LO turned out healthy as a horse, born on due date so full term. And so far so good I know my disorders are hereditary so ill be on the lookout for signs later in her life but she’ll be 7 in November and she pretty dang normal which I’m happy about. So mama its up to what you need to remain healthy body and mind. Ask your doctor questions maybe you can try something to take the edge off. Just do research and weight the pros and cons.

I took depression and anxiety meds when i was pregnant and both pregnancies went fine plus my two boys turned out healthy. I would not worry about being on those meds at all.

I think it would depend on what type and the dosage. I was on lorazepam.5-1mg at a time as needed.

Yes. You may need to switch, but talk to your doctor asap! If you are suffering outside typical pregnancy things, it should be remedied as best as possible, pregnant or not. You have to take care of yourself so you can take care of your baby (in utero and out utero). Your brain is your organ and it needs love too. Pregnancy is stressful enough, having high and unmanaged anxiety can lead to much higher stress levels which are not good for you or your baby. It can also lead to higher risk of post partum depression and it can set you up for a myriad of stressful emotions after the baby is born and you ho back on them. If you can manage anxiety without meds, consider seeing a therapist and taper off according to doctor recommendations.

I stayed in my antidepressants/anxiety the whole way though my pregnancy, because they stated it is safer. Have a talk to your gp and go from there.

If you’re talking about anti anxiety meds like Xanax and Valium, only known birth defect I’m aware of is possibility of cleft palate, which can be corrected . This occurs in the first couple of weeks of pregnancy, so if you’re into your second trimester the risk is small. If you’re talking about antidepressants like Prozac or Paxil, I would avoid it. The joy of the pregnancy helped my depression anyways

The doc gave me vicodins Cuz I had pulmonary embolisms but never took them always sold them to someone. I had to be on oxygen and every movement was torture with pain and was so hard to breathe. After I went threw meds but never still found anything to calm me besides weed. Its illegal here so I can barely use it. The hubs gets to see me have meltdowns so many times he really thinks I’m bipolar. At time I believe it too

See a councillor if you can get on a care plan . I suffer bad from
Anxiety and Depression and was going to counciling until bub was born I was also taking vitamin b tablets . But always check with your doctors .

I needed antidepressants while pregnant with my 3rd, near the beginning. Of course everyone wants to put their baby first, because we’re moms. But as my doctor put it," I’m more scared of you walking into traffic and killing yourself than I am of you taking this medication that you need." You matter. Don’t ever let anyone guilt you about taking medication while pregnant, or ever for that matter

I quit taking all meds except vitamins obviously. My doc told me straight up, certain drugs are safe to take in lower doses but, at that point are less effective if even at all bc the dosage isn’t right for you personally so there’s no point, and to push thru, meditate and take nothing unless I truly feel that I absolutely can not do without. It was rough, no lie, but I made it. I just thought about my baby and what could happen IF the possible birth defects that could be caused, actually happened to him and how selfish I’d feel and how it would be my fault and that helped a lot tbh.
