Do you tip when you are just picking food up?

My sister and I need opinions! What’s with this whole tipping thing lately? When you pick up food at a restaurant (fast food or sit down), do you tip? How about when you go through a drive through and they ask for a tip? Recently we’ve been through places like Pizza Hut, 5 guys, Starbucks, local Chinese and Mexican restaurants, and they all ask for tips even if we are picking up and not sitting down. I personally always tip but seems like everyone and their mother are asking for tips now, seems a bit excessive.

I tip if someone has waited on me hand and foot.

No to fast food, 10% from take out restaurant and delivery ,20% or more (depending on service) for sit down meal.

The only time I tip if it’s take out is if one is required when ordering.

Some have tip jars by register and can give a tip if picking up.

Just make it rain everywhere you go

I always tip, sit down or drive thru. Regardless, they are on their feet all day and are doing a service for me.

I do as these workers are working at least twice as hard since covid when so many now choose not to work anymore so every place is short staffed.

I was a Tapas restaurant in the UK on Saturday and they automatically added 10% to the bill.

It depends on if they messed up my food or not . I always check before I leave .

A person still makes your food. Another person packages and bags it neatly with everything needed (usually a waiter/waitress). I don’t tip as much as dine in but I definitely tip.

I only tip when we go out or at a place with a car hop like sonic :ballot_box_with_check:

No only if they deliver to my house or sonic or del rancho

Most credit card machines ask about a tip amt.The person at the register has to ask do you want to add a tip so they can get past that step and go on with your sale

I work in a restaurant that has a lot of call ins and pickups. If people tip we truly appreciate anything we get but obviously it’s not required and we do not get offended in any way if you don’t tip

Im a manger at subway and the tips we receive are for making your food to go order or sit down.

Maybe for starbucks/dunkins, but no where else unless my order is excessive. If they deliver or i am eating in, then yes i will tip, but if I am picking up no.

I work at a family owned restaurant and most people tip for to go orders. 90% of the time it’s myself or another server rushing to put the orders together aside from their other duties so it’s always nice getting a little extra money from the tips left. :slightly_smiling_face:

I tip when I dine in or have it delivered.

Sit down yes. Take out and fast food no

I almost always tip. The kitchen still made the food, it was still packaged, and still handed to me. I’ve never thought of it in drive thru’s though, but I also never carry cash and they don’t give me a receipt or have a screen I can add a tip on.

If they ask, they’re not getting one. Tips for me are for great service.

For me it depends on the place. Most sit down restaurant workers make less than minimum wages and rely on tips, in that case, always tip even if only taking out. Places like fast food where they already get paid at least minimum wage, no

I heard the rule some years ago “If they don’t serve you, you don’t give them a tip”

Shouldn’t have to. It’s their job

I tip when I go get my coffee at Big b or when I go to the drive-thru at fast food restaurants.

If you are doing take out I do 10%

I also tip based on personality…experience
I def don’t feel obligated if asked…
I can understand the asking tho… times are hard

Fast food no but if I call n order regardless of deliver or pickup I tip but not gonna lie when I say they deliver that tips better :person_shrugging:

I always tip take out, pick up, delivery and sit down. Servers and drivers dont get the same hourly wage as most other jobs. I made $ 2.12 per hour as a server. Drivers usually have to pay their own gas and do not make as much hourly either.

If they are being exceptional or I see the business is slow

I normally tip them a few bucks, as long as they are acting right, which is almost always.

Their wages are crap, why not? It seems like the right thing to do.

We don’t tip in Australia

I seriously don’t understand why minimum wage isn’t enough. I’m from Australia so tipping isn’t our way. Minimum wage is enough for people to live on here. I tip here when the service is amazing but it’s not necessary

I tip for delivery and a regular eat in restaurant, not fast food. I was really weirded out how places like subway have started prompting people to tip.

Yes someone took the time to package it for you to pick up

If I’m picking up I’ll tip 10%. If not, and actually sitting down at a restaurant, minimum of 20%.

I tip when I pick up or sit down.
I do not tip at a drive thru/fast food window unless it is a family run/small business type establishment.

Fast food I dont tip but if you’re picking up from a restaurant someone’s job is to pack up the meals and work to go and are still living off of their tips. If you dont wanna tip go to McDonald’s :woman_shrugging:t2:

I will say as a former bartender and server I always tip if they are accepted. :person_shrugging:

Tipping is for dine in services!!
I do tip my dasher or uber driver tho.

I only give tips if I’ve been seated

Dine in or delivery only🤷‍♀️

I just ordered food to go last night at my favorite restaurant. They are the best! GREAT service. I tipped $8 for a to go order. If I would have went and sat down I would have tipped them $20 plus because the service is so great. I don’t do that at every restaurant if I order to go but if I sit I always tip good if the service is good. Fast food places I don’t tip unless it’s like subway. People asking for tips? I see that as entitled. If you work in fast food don’t expect a tip. I worked in the marijuana industry and depending on how much time I spent I expected a tip but never asked for one and I didn’t get mad if I didn’t get one.

Because their employers only pay two dollars an hour. You are supposed to make up the difference. Actually paying three times as much for your meal

I only tip if I down at a restaurant and am waited on. If I pick up, I’m using my time, my gas, my energy, what am I tipping for?

You’re supposed to tip at a drive thru?

If I eat inside a restaurant I’ll tip but not if it’s a pickup

Not unless it is a large and muti- difficult order.

I only tip if I am sitting down and someone is serving me.i will not tip you if you are just doing a task that is your job in the first place

I only tip on pickup orders if 1 the order I placed was large or 2 I’ve placed a pick up order within an hour of the resturants closing time.

I’ll throw like a dollar or two as a thank you but I don’t percentage tip or anything

During the pandemic, I tipped, because I knew businesses were struggling.

I don’t tip at fast food or carry out restaurants. I might leave a small tip at sit down restaurants when I’m carrying out. Starbucks involves more than putting something in a bag, so small tips are reasonable.

I don’t tip if I’m picking up takeout

I tip for good service and nothing else. And I mean above and beyond, not what someone is paid to do. I don’t eat where people have to earn a living through tips. So I might tip for a takeout but it would be a keep the change job.

Hold up, you don’t tip at Starbucks or coffee stands?

I’ve always seen tip jars outside of those places and give a dollar or two per drink

Most systems have that option on their card readers now

Only tip when served at a set down meal

Yes only because people in the food industry don’t make much except for waitress mabey

My daughter is a hostess at a restaurant/bar, part of her responsibilities is to take orders, out the order in to the kitchen, and put the order together for the customer to pick up. It can be a lot of work depending on how much is ordered (even catering orders). So yes, she does get tips here and there and is very appreciative of them.

I have recently thought and noticed that the tip culture is becoming extreme as well. My son works at Texas Roadhouse and as a server makes VERY good money, more than me tbh, but he started as a busboy and then worked the to go window. Working to go station pays minimum wage at least and then also gets tipped for nearly every order…he was making well above minimum wage in high school doing that job. If you are a SERVER I will tip for the service, if you are an employee making a minimum wage or higher I won’t.

If I’m dining in and you’re serving me at my table then I will tip you but i don’t see why you gotta tip if you order and take your own food to the table or picking up.

If I’m sitting down yes. I used to not tip if I was picking it up but ppl do have to box it up for you and put your sauces in those to go containers, so I started tipping when a server friend explained that to me.

No. No one deserves a tip unless they are literally a SERVER.

I always tip something for carryout, usually 10% or $5 max. Full service sit down gets at least 20%.

Tips are a thank you for exceptional service. Absolutely not mandatory at all. It’s a bonus. If I was very pleased with your service, I will tip accordingly. You can’t bully a tip from me, doing so will gurantee that I will not return or if I do the tip is automatically zero next time.

No but I think I saw someone post (a restaurant owner) that even if you’re taking food out to go, tipping does help the restaurant/employees out.

I only tip if I’m at a sit down restaurant.

I tip based on the service. My family went to a beautiful little restaurant yesterday and the service was above and beyond. Girl received a 20 tip on a 53 dollar bill. I’ve also tipped a big fat goose egg on occasion.

We tip if we pick up food from a restaurant not fast food. Some waitress have to box up and bag the food and so why not🤷‍♀️

I always tip wherever there’s an option too. To be fair unless im getting served in a restaurant/ bar I’m only tipping $1-10 that adds up at the end of the night (and remember they usually have to split tips) but I also worked for a restaurant in Togo where people would pickup their orders. Honestly with taxes (they tax your actual paycheck plus whatever you made in tips) it really eventually evens out with splitting and taxes. :woman_shrugging:t2: it’s kinda like you just get some of your pay in advanced … At least that’s how I thought of it

I tip when I’m in a restaurant, but take out they don’t serve you. And if someone actually asked for a tip, well no. I’m a good tipper but will not tolerate someone asking me for one, or if services are bad.

Heck yeah if you want good food the next time. Cooks still cook and they get tipped too

Not when ee picking up the food

I tip for to-go orders. Most fast food places don’t do the tipping thing, but when I worked at McDonald’s for a short period recently, I did have a couple people try to tip me and one cute older couple insisted until I accepted the money. Some people I think you should definitely tip, and I don’t see anything wrong with just giving the option incase somebody would like to tip.

I tip the inside employees at a pizza restaurant. Yes they are paid hourly, but it is NOT worth the amount of work and stress they put on you.

Fast food restaurants, no.

When I sit down at a restaurant I full tip, 15-20% ot more. When I am pickup up, I usually just do an extra dollar or 2. I feel like their time and attention isn’t required as much as if I’m sitting in there for an hour.

I always tip unless I’m asked and no never been a wage is not enough to live on and you should know this but if you ask me to tip I will not

They ask for tips ar Strike and spare and I havent yet figured out what for.All they do is take your money and put a band on the kids arm.I do tip well when I go to sit down places who actually wait on me. If you can afford to eat out you can afford to tip well.

No
Nor do i tip at a restaurant

My daughter works at a restaurant. Most often she’s a waitress and relies on tips. Sometimes she’s a cashier for take out orders. Regardless, she gets paid $9 an hour. So, when she cashiers, her take home pay is really dismal. Because of this I always try to tip cashiers at restaurants.

No, the correct time to tip is in a sit down restaurant. You don’t tip pick ups unless you really want to.

As a server, I tip when I’m dining in or doing carry out. Most servers are taking time away from their in-house guests to take/place your order, check on the progress, boxing/packaging up, plastic ware and condiments, and making sure everything is correct. To me it just makes sense to tip.

I do not tip fast food though.

I’m a restaurant manager/server/bartender and I tip very well when I go to a sit down restaurant. I also tip on to go orders from sit down restaurants. And i always tip my bartenders! What I don’t do though, is tip fast food. Mostly because I didn’t think you could. When I worked at McDonald’s as a teenager we were not allowed to take tips.

Sit down where a waitress actually serves me yes I tip… Fast food where it has sat for who knows how long and just thrown into a bag NO…

Some of the employees who bring your order out, fix the salads, drinks, everything except actually cooking the food… i do tip them.

Next you’ll be tipping at drive thru. Come on

NO ONE should ask for a tip. Good service should be rewarded not expected!!

Some restaurants have “to go” people who actually package and check your food and make sure your order is correct and they also take the orders phone/online… so I do tip when I pick up because anyone who is serving me I feel deserves something!! Fast food I don’t tip unless it’s Dunkin’ Donuts lol I always tip but McDonald’s and fast food chains like that no I don’t tip…

If they don’t ask I tip a dollar or two at drive thru

? I do tip but they know what the job paid when they started. Did you get a tip for doing your job today?

It depends honestly, drive through if the person serving/giving me my order is pleasant, and polite yes I will tip. I think it is important to show people you appreciate their positive service. Sit down yes I always tip.

If I’m just picking it up, no
I’m not receiving a service except the food I paid for

I will tip if I am sitting down eating, yes, bc I’m receiving more of a service and servers are paid poorly whereas your hostess is paid a decent hourly wage

It’s bad… gofundme is asking for tips now too.

I tip when someone we go to a sit down restaurant but if you are only handing me a cup I don’t think you need a tip.

You don’t tip if you are just picking food up and if they ask for a tip. Don’t give one.

Fast food workers make a wage at least at minimum or better… places that have actual cooks… and waitresses usually rely on tips because the wages are lower

I do as long as it is not fast food as they have to package it and make sure it is correct before sending out.

Hmmm. I don’t know. Tipping allows people to pay their employees minimum wage. It should stop. There are countries where tipping is discouraged. People are paid a living wage there. Iceland comes to mind.
That being said, I tip if I’m sitting down and being served or it’s delivered.
