How to get baby to sleep through the night?

Mom used to mix a little baby cereal in the babies bottle. Not much, just a smidgen and my little sister started sleeping all night as well as my sister did this with her premature twins.

6 months babies tend to cluster feed because that is a typical time for a growth spurt.

Sometimes they don’t sleep through the night till after 1 years old. I have 4 sons, each was very different. One slept through the night at 3 months and kept it up, one would go crawl into his own bed and put himself to sleep if he was tired, one didn’t start sleeping through the night till after a year old. One was on and off through out. These early years you need to just learn to roll with what your child dictates. Its very normal. Hang in there Mama I’m sure you’re doing great! We’ve all been there and all felt like nothings working and logically something should work, it’s not you, it’s the baby stage. Each baby is different just listen to yours. Good luck Mama!! :two_hearts:

Maybe up her formula if she seems hungrier

This is biologically NORMAL. No. Sleep is a developmental thing and can’t/ shouldn’t be rushed. This will pass soon. Let her body do what it needs to do.

It’s a 6 month old its normal for them to not sleep through the night. Honestly if you put baby cereal in a bottle to make them “sleep longer” you’re being lazy. It doesnt make them sleep longer all it does is create a potential choking hazard. So if you put anything besides milk in a bottle you’re knowingly putting your kid in danger.

Don’t have a baby if you expect sleep… 6 months old is not expected to sleep all night.

All 4 of my children were sleeping through at 3 months. Warm relaxing bath and a T of cereal in 7 ozs of formula worked with mine. My husband and myself alternated nights, when they were waking. Most of the time it was both of us. One changing the diaper, and the other warming up the bottle. We never propped the bottle up, cause we both were very much against it. They are only that small for such a short time. They are in their 30s and 40s now

I don’t know but mine woke up every 3 hours until 2 and a half so I relate :sweat_smile:

The only thing I recommend is a bath with lavender baby wash and baby lotion before bed. Get your baby up early in the morning, and open all the windows in your house. Make sure you let all the sunshine and light possible in your house throughout the day until it’s time to close the windows. That helped my daughter a lot I think. It is normal for your daughter to be waking up. Good luck to you!

Depends on the baby, mine baby slept through the night from 4 months. Sometimes he wakes and that’s ok because I can’t expect him to sleep through all the time. His wake up times can vary from every hour up to every 3 hours if he is unwell or unsettled but at least 5 nights a week he will go through.

Get her into solids immediately, and try a small amount of cereal in her last bottle before you put her down for the night. Remember there is a growth spurt aswell so try be mindful of that aswell.

Like someone else said, we’d put a Tbsp of cereal in her last bottle of the night. Dr even suggested it. She started sleeping 7-8 hrs before waking.

Yes, let them develop until they’re ready :+1:t2:

It’s Normal but you can try a bottle an hour before bed then another 1/2 bottle at bed time if they will take them they might be full longer. Also a good dinner should help keep her fuller longer.

Do you have the same nightly routine for bed. Warm Bath, massage with moisture, proper clothes, catch bub when they are actually tired bottle then off to bed.

At 6 months. No and you shouldn’t expect that either. Every 3 hours is about right. Don’t add stuff to bottles or anything like that either. She’s doing what she’s supposed to at 6 months.

mine did this , every 3 hrs until he was 9 months old, taht night I remember, I made him a bottle but all he did was cyy, brought him in bed with me laid him on me, until he fell asleep, brought him back to his crib, he woke up again, again & again, this went on all night until 6am, them he stayed asleep until 9am, he cut his first tooth, the top one, Never had a problem after that & then he slept for 12 hrs a night :slightly_smiling_face: (he will be 49 in July)

Mine is almost 12 years old lol but started sleeping through the night at like 2 months old. Her waking up in the middle of the night hungry was our sign go up to more solid food. Started rice cereal at about 4 months old, then started veggies then fruits in baby food. Only did one or two new foods at a time so we could tell if she really didn’t like it or if there was any possible allergic reaction. Also, I was told to start with veggies so they would get used to that first and less likely to be picky eater. My daughter loves veggies still.

All the ones saying cereal are tr@sh @ss parents :)))

If you’re living where the weather is decent I’ve heard a little outside time helps them sleep… mine is also about to be 6 months and I don’t think he will be sleeping through the night any time soon:woman_shrugging:t2: His first stretch on a good night is about 5 hrs. But we’re also transitioning from being swaddled (his fav) so I know it’s gonna take time. I did get him a little light thing for his crib to help “put himself to sleep”. I think that’s helping him figure out how to self soothe. But I honestly have no idea :black_heart:

Mine didn’t sleep through the night until about 6 yrs old :unamused:

Bigger or more bottles during the day

Does he or she pee a lot as well or super fussy?

Feed her meals during the day with her bottles.
I know they say food before one is just for fun … but for some it was for survival …

Feed her real food to keep her fuller longer. All my kids are what we ate since 3-4 months and slept six hours a night. Common sense really. If their stomachs are fuller they sleep longer

I always gave my babies more during the day and they slept through the night. Both my girls do the same thing with my granddaughters & they sleep all night too. The youngest is 5 months old now.

there is some god awful shockingly dangerous advice on here about early weaning… Don’t start your baby on baby rice at a few weeks old or put cereal in their bottle, survivor bias and anecdotal advice is not credible advise from actual professionals for a reason…

Make sure she has a full belly right before bed. Bottle, baby food, warm bath with bedtime lotion. But some babies don’t sleep through the night until they are older. They have to get that routine down on their own.

I started feeding my children cereal at 3mths old, that may help. My 3 children slept all night long from the moment I brought them home

I used catnip :woman_shrugging:t4: boiled it like a tea, and put about an ounce of it in a bottle and I also added oatmeal. Hope this helps it worked for my first born son and my twin boys

Put rice cereal in her bottle or feed her off a spoon a small amount. My middle son was a 9 pound baby and I fed him off a spoon some cereal. The dr said it was perfectly fine. He still didn’t sleep through the night till he was almost a year. He grew to be 6’4 and 180 pounds. He was a athlete and never got overweight.

If you find out let me know :sob: idk what’s gotten into mine but as soon as its bed time she thinks its play time

I always envied parents who kids slept through the night. I had B/G twins and although my daughter would sleep thru the night, my son always got up. No matter how full they were or later sleeping times it never changed my son’s sleeping pattern. After 1 year he finally did. Good luck! In time he will start doing full nights and then you’ll wake up in shock that it finally happened.

Warm bath little cereal. Baby is hungry

A spoonful of rice cereal at night should get you an extra HR.
Warm bath, calming environment, ensure they eat within an HR of bedtime so they’re full.
I used to feed, bathe, lotion, jammies, sit & read, bed.

Omg! I always thought I had the magic touch with getting my kids to sleep until my son came along. He made me work for sleep lol. I made sure naps were taken no later than 3pm. I kept a tight routine with him. A few hours before bed we would get some hard play time in (crawling, chasing, rolling, tickling) Then it was dinner time. Right after he would get a warm bubble bath and play time in the tub. I’d warm his towel and jammies in the dryer. Lotion him up and he got a little snack before bedtime while he watched some cartoons or we read books. Brushed5 his teeth and laid him in bed. This is where I’m almost ashamed as a seasoned veteran parent lol. I would lay down in the room with him (not in the same bed) and pretend to sleep. Sometimes he just didn’t want to be5 alone but would nod off quick and I could sneak out. It took a few weeks to get on a schedule but it was easy once we found what worked.

Feed something more substantial in the evening/early night.

Having a routine is great. But honestly STTN is developmental and totally normal for 6 months. My youngest didn’t sleep through the night until closer to 2.

Most babies don’t sleep through the night. They need to wake and eat. Yes it’s frustrating and exhausting but it won’t last forever. My 18 month old still wakes sometimes at night.

I see a bunch of cereal and oatmeal ‘hacks’. 1. It’s EXTREMELY dangerous in a bottle. 2. I tried feeding my son all kinds of cereal, oatmeal, mashed potatoes etc directly before bed. He’s 10m and still wakes at night. Currently he’ll sleep 4-5hrs at a time. But occasionally he’ll be up every 2hrs for a bottle. It’s stressful, frustrating, and tiring. But it’s just a bump in the road. You got this mama/dada❤️ I’ve been the one up every night for 10m. You just get used to it

Ours did this till about 7 months. We did puffs before bed and sometimes en extra ounce. To top the tank off. And she went to bed with a sippy of water. That way I knew she was a faker lol

Your 6 month old is suppose to wake up every few hours for milk lol?

Www.babysleepsite.com is a great resource along with your pediatrician and or a child sleep specialist.

All babies are different. My girls slept thru night pretty early on w the occasional diaper change around 3am. My son will be two next month and is up all night sometimes and still takes a bottle w milk at night and will get up for more. Nothing u can do really just roll w the punches lol

My pediatrician said this to us… “quite feeding her… she’s old enough to sleep through without needing to eat. If I wake up in the middle of the night and someone offers me a beer and some pizza…I might not be hungry but I’d probably eat it.” The first night was HELL, the second night was a lot better, and by night 3 she was sleeping through the night or at least able to fall back asleep easily.

He must need something heavier in he’s tummy to satisfy him, which helps him sleep better ? Rice Cereal for example. I’d even start him on Mashed Potatoes, Pumpkin &Sweetpotato with gravy… My Kids we’re eating that from 3/4Months, and I’ve NEVER had any problems.

If you feed baby food after each bottle during the day t give him the little extra nutrition he’s wanting it make fill his tummy. I feed my 2 months old every 2 hrs at night before bed at like 10-11 ish I give her an extra half bottle and she will sleep 5-6 hrs. I have her on a great schedule now and she will sleep pretty well. Every now and then she will wake up sooner

Always keep a radio turned on low

I have four kids. Oldest will be 11 next week. Youngest is 11 months old. My oldest slept horrible. Didn’t sleep through the night until after she turned one. My second and third. Slept through the night from 6 weeks on. My youngest. Forget about it. She’s up multiple times a night. And not even for a bottle. Just to be on me. I’m drained every morning. There are nights where I can get a good 5-6 hour stretch. But most nights she’s up every 2-3 hours. I feel you on this. But it does get better

Good luck. Babies wake up a lot.
That’s just parenting life. Some sleep all night and some don’t.
But, maybe try sleeping music.

I use to change my babies diaper first thing then put baby rice in the formula to make them fuller :white_heart: and put a glove with rice next to them or on them so they would think it was my hand!

After 3 kids and 8 grandkids I have found there is not one Particular thing that works. I would just take some of these suggestions and see what your child responds too.

I didn’t get my daughter to sleep through the night until last night(hope it continues). She is almost 13 months old. We had to give her our bed(queen mattress we put on floor for her) in order for this to happen. My son still wakes up most nights And he’s 3.

Ummm it’s normal, she’s only 6 months!!! All of this normal
Sleep is developmental too
Sleeping through is considered a 5 hour stretch
Only 6 months momma hang on, just wait until teething, leaps and spurts, you’ll be chasing them around at 1 am cause they want to play and run around the house…everything is normal lol
You’ll sleep again one of these days

Music baby food then right before bed warm cereal bottle. May still wake up once but it will help. Also my be ready to eat more ounces at once

Look up eat play sleep routine. Start of a day time

Weighted sleepsack try feeding her baby food the vegetable ones seem to be a little thicker with oats close to bed time bath and don’t pick the baby up right away when you hear them move around or cry I used to do that now I wait most of the time she falls back asleep with her pacifier

Add a tablespoon of rice cereal to the bottle right before bed

Putting rice cereal in a bottle is dangerous and should only be done at recommendation of a doctor… even then it’s a choking hazard. Make sure baby is in their own sleep space with no blankets or stuffed animals. Soft music could help, along with a bath time routine with lavender wash. At 6 months it’s still normal for baby to wake up for a bottle as that’s their main source of nutrition and food. My 2 and 4 year olds both still wake up in the night sometimes.

Ask your pediatrician about rice cereal before giving it to your baby. It can be too much for their Tummy and it can be a choking hazard

I know from my first that the only way you’ll get her to sleep through the night is to wean her. I haven’t done it yet personally because I’m not looking forward to nighttime weaning AT.ALL.

Babies don’t see too well. They use their senses.
I would out a shirt I wore thru the day in the bed with them. Use it like a blanket. That way it’s close to their face. They smell you and think your near. It helped quite often.
I also sang or would slow dance.
