How to treat constipation in toddlers?

I would talk to your doctor and see if you can give him magnesium gummies. That is what my daughters pediatrician suggested because she has the same problem but it’s due to the diet she has to be on. They tried miralax as well but it doesn’t work that good.

Try sqeezing a fresh orange put a little in syringe … If that dorsnt work go to doctors x

Karo syrup just a small amount this was recommended by my daughter pediatrician and it works wonders

Apple sauce, apple juice, a suppository if they’re actively trying to go and it won’t come out. Pester the doctor as much as you can and see about getting your appointment moved up you’re your child’s best advocate. Impacted bowels are very serious. Best of luck hun.

I take a spoonful of coconut oil. It lubricates the colon. Very safe. Ask your doctor if a very small amount can be given to your child. A little goes a long way. This has really helped me
No more constipation!

Only use organic virgin coconut oil.

Sounds like his gut health is poor. My daughter used to get constipated sometimes. Then I decided to focus on her overall oral & gut microbiome. I focus on eating foods that are nutrient dense, and I add as many pre & probiotic foods. I also use lots of MCT & coconut oils to kill off over growths of bacteria, and add back good bacteria. Also I added humic & fulvic acids.

My sister used to have to give her daughter the pediatric suppositories they sell at Dollar general, walgreens and walmart. They work really good. Her daughter grew out of the problem or 3 and a half.

My toddler is 3 and has suffered from constipation since he was an infant. We’ve done a dietary panel with the allergy specialist, and found out he was allergic to soy, milk, and casein, so we had to cut that out of his diet, and I have to give him half a capful of miralax twice a day to keep him regular. Good luck, mama. I know it’s frustrating. They also have suppositories at Walmart for kids that do wonders for unclogging their bowels and making them go poop. He’ll absolutely hate it, but I always keep them on hand for when I absolutely cannot get him to go.

So I have some stuff that helps that my second mom told me when my son was having issues. For one never put your child on Miralax it’s very bad for them doctors always push it but please do extensive research on it. Second prunes don’t actually help create the hormones to help you poop only apples and grapes get him 100% apple juice or 100% grape juice also cut back the dairy it does back you up. This will sound awful but it’s one thing I can count on if nothing else works but get mens dial soap or a strong scented mens soap shiv a piece off about the size of your pinkie nail and get it wet do this in the bath and stick it up his bum it should start working 30 minutes to an hour before he makes a poop sometimes longer but it will help lub his bum to help move the blockage. My second mom has been a nurse for ages and did this with us kids and she does it with some of the elderly she cares for I have other stuff you can do as well if this doesn’t work but starting him on a probiotic will also help if nothing works you can get the baby laxative juice and up his water tons of water so it keeps his poop soft

Might sound weird but to me sounds like he’s dehydrated and all that fiber is binding him up Personally if it was my kid I would stop giving him fiber and I would be pushing water and more water Good Luck on finding the solution

Be careful with raw apples and cheese. My oldest had constipation issues when she was younger. We had to do 2 enemas over 2 days, suppositories for 3 days and miralax for 6 months.

I would see a pediatric gastro dr ASAP. I wouldn’t wait, like now!! Constipation is more painful than having diarrhea. Poor baby.

I’d be getting referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist. Sounds like more than just constipation. Especially being that impacted causing twisted intestines. Really surprised he hasn’t been referred already. Ur pediatrician is slacking.

I had a day care for a lot of years and I always suggested individual applesauce with two tablespoons of oil mixed in. We used veggie oil but maybe today coconut oil would be better for him. It just has to hurt a couple of times and kids will hold it in for days! Did Dr suggest any narrowing in his colon?

My son had this problem…he would go days without a bowel movement. I tried so many things but the Danimals prebiotic drinks works best .

My kiddos had the same problem…my pediatrician recommended Miralax…you take a half a cap full and mix it in half a cup of your kid’s favorite drink …you give it to your kid once daily til Your kid’s poop has a pudding like consistency…sounds gross I know but it really does work …I’ve got 4 kids and they’re all picky eaters…oh and they had the constipation problem especially when they were potty training

I did. My son was 2 1/2 yrs and had that problem. Scared the stuffing out of me. He would strain and strain and cry. Took him to the dr and he stretched his rectum. Did the trick

Whole milk is a huge issue that was never talked about. Once I switched my son to 2% milk and upped his viber he’s stools changed. I also fed him a lot of tuna for lunch you can make it many ways. My son had a lot of problems with constipation we would end up in childrens hospital because of it. He would start pooping blood it was so heartbreaking. But like I said once I made these changes he has done great! Good luck momma

My son had encopresis(spelling may vary) and we had to do enemas and suppositories until he eventually figured it out. Was rough but hang in there! The bicycle exercises helped alil too.

My daughter has had issues with her bowels since she was a toddler. She is now 11. I had her at a specialist and he said to give her restoralax. He said that it’s something that can be given daily and your body does not become dependent on it. She takes it every day still and if she misses a day or two then she starts to get backed up. She’s now old enough to take the gullies but before that she took the powder and I just mixed it with water, orange juice or iced tea. The only thing it says not to mix with is apple juice. Good luck mamma❤️

I would have her checked for food allergy or dairy intolerance. Daily Probiotics also work wonders for constipation issues.

Karo syrup. Or they have laxative for toddlers. Also it wouldn’t hurt to give your toddler prune juice. Or add more fiber to your toddlers diet

My son was always constipated and he would scream and stomp his feet and not be able to go. We ended up having the doctor prescribe Miralax in his bottles and once we found the right dosage we never had more issues and eventually we weened him off the miralax all together. If you haven’t tried apple juice, you could give that a try. It always works for my family when one of us cannot go.

Apple juice usually cleans my daughter out

So I think first step- have him tested for food intolerances, not just food allergies. Sometimes it can cause constipation instead of diarrhea. Also, I had this issue with my daughter, but not as severe as what you’re saying. I bought her her own really cool water jug. One is frozen themed, the other has really cool colors! I bought one for myself too so she sees me and wants to copy me lol. She loves them. She’s only two but she wasn’t drinking enough water. They have the oz measured on them both, so I can track how much water she’s drinking. Most chronic constipation issues can be solved with increased water consumption. I even tried this for myself, drinking 1 oz a day per your body weight. So I weigh 114 lbs, and I drink 114 oz of water each day (or at least I try to!) I hope it helps!! You’re doing all the right things, mama! I hope he gets better!

Dr told me any fruit starting with “p” pear, peaches, plums even in can. It works for my son who has chronic constipation. Canned frit is fine, grapes also

Have you tried the Culturelle Probiotics with Fiber? My daughter takes a pack in a drink everyday. She had big solid stool, not sure how she even passes them lol.

Try a teaspoon of olive oil by mouth first thing in the morning and massage his stomach from top to bottom with your thumbs with a bit of pressure like if your sliding down.

Fiber gummies daily, exercise and water. My son really struggled until the fiber gummed.

Have you tried stool softener. Try sienna it natural or an enema

See a paediatric gastroenterologist, sounds like encopresis.

It sounds like he has encopresis. I would take him to a specialist. My nephew had it. He needs to be on a regiment of vitamins along with a special diet lots of water and high fiber foods. We live in a world where no matter what you think is healthy you are giving your kids. Has been modified. And makes us sick

My son had chronic constipation the pedialax suppositories worked wonders when we needed something quick it works instantly. And we did 2 day clean outs where he got two cap fulls a day and pretty much emptied out his bowels. We dealt with it constantly I actually got it under control when we started potty training and he got sat down on the toilet around the same time he pooped daily and he was scared to go cause he associated pooping with pain and is his intestines weren’t working properly and didn’t give him the urge to go when had to any longer. So he didn’t know til it was too late. We started potty training and after he realized if he went daily he finally after about 3 months told me he had to poop his intestines were working stronger again. Miralax did nothing for us really and it can cause behaviorial issues is what I was told

I used to give prunes, 1 a day then upped it to 2 when they got a bit older.

I used these to help keep my son regular.

I was one of those moms. Doctor after doctor. Only to find out this is so common and they deal with it with enemas/ suppositories

My oldest had this issue the same time her father filed for divorce. Suppositories were used as child abuse against me! because they had to REACH for anything they could. His mother told me it wasn’t that hard and to sprinkle glitter in the toilet and she just started going.

I fuckin laughed. However the same time all this happened culturelle kids fiber packets were a new released product that I bought to try and I begged them to take the box I bought. She refused. I pleaded it’s JUST FIBER. 1 week into using the product she was going on time and not constipated. Tho they still tell me it was glitter in the damn toilet bowl

When my daughter was an infant she suffered from constipation it was horrible she was drinking formula and it was so bad I had to help her get it out when she was pushing I felt so bad her doctor had to put a suppository in to help get some out and just suggested to give her prune juice, prunes, & water I struggled for a while getting her to go even as she got older & even now that she’s 3 she will have very hard stools I cut the milk cause that’s all she’d want and it made it 10x worse started pedisure because she is hard to feed because she is blind and it’s helped soften her stools they even have one that contains a lot of fiber and she had the nastiest diaper ever! Hope you’re son gets the help he needs I can only imagine the pain he is going through and definitely seek into a specialist who can actually help him & get better answers!

I have the same issue with my daughter i give her miralax evey other day and i cut out all sugars from her diet except the fruit that already has sugars and she no longer gets constipated she is 2.5 now

Lactose for kids is good white bottle ur Dr will prescribe it right u can buy over counter in chemist or movical sachets either

I’m so sorry you guys have to go through that :pensive: my daughter didn’t have severe issues like this, but I always used Welch’s grape juice, prune juice, tons of water, health eating, keeping them working out… running around, etc. She eventually got bigger and we realized that she wasn’t constipated how we thought she just knew it would hurt and hold it in… eventually making it hurt her even worse. I would talk to your pediatrician about it, maybe finding a more natural solution so his body won’t get used to only using that for going to the bathroom. I wish you guys the best of luck!

We have the same issue. Saw a Dr yesterday he’s now on movicol 6 a day plus parachoc and I need to get as much veg into him as possible so making juices. Hopefully it works this time… so hard seeing them in pain :frowning:

Kiwi fruit is another awesome laxative. Blend it up into a drink?

Has any blood work been done? I know a child that was like this and was actually lacking certain vitamin and minerals. Also get him checked for celiac disease or lactose intolerance. Most problems start in the gut.

My little boy has been the same since about 8 months old, we have found what works best is regularly giving him lactolose medicine. It works so much better and faster than movicol!

My youngest son had constipation as a child. We had to give him the kids version of Movicol. It was Movicol but a small child friendly doseage. You can ask for it but they got funny about it when some legislation changed and they had to rename it on a child’s prescription. I had to speak to my GP about it but they sorted it and I got it on repeat. Worked great and we used it for a while.
I’m not a medical expert so can’t say it would help your child BUT that’s what I did with mine. Maybe discuss options with your GP and see what they can do? Best of luck. Its the worst thing seeing them constipated and in discomfort

I definitely suggest a GI specialist! My son had it so bad that he would turn purple and scream and cry everytime. It was AWFUL! As soon as I took him to the specialist and he got an xray found out he had a blockage. He is taking Miralax everyday and the specialist said it could take up to a year to get him regulated and figure out what the problem is. I feel your pain mama and wish you the best of luck!

My son had issues too as a toddler and this is what I was told. We started with 1 teaspoon of mineral oil and increased as necessary to the recommended amount of 1 teaspoon per every 10 pounds of weight…Found in any pharmacy or grocery store…
It’s a natural way that isn’t expensive or hard to give in his drink in the morning. Of course I’ll add that a doctors advice is always the best place to start. Good luck Momma!:slightly_smiling_face::wink::yellow_heart::v:

I suffer with this issue too. I feel for your son. I remember growing up and being in so much pain and not understanding why.
I take stool softeners (colace) and have to resort to an enema when it gets really bad. Some things that I’ve noticed have helped are vitamin C, chia seeds, kefir milk/probiotics, and staying hydrated! sprouts sells a brand called good belly, it’s a juice that isn’t fermented but has probiotics in it. It’s very yummy. I’ve noticed when I try and eat a lot of fiber it can sometimes back me up even more or not help at all. But frequent, small meals/snacks, and the other things I have mentioned help. I just started taking vitamin C and that really seems to be helping!

Good luck! I hope your son can find relief and that this helps him.

i use to put a little bit of white karo syrup in with my sons formula. or milk. This was doctor recommended. It worked well and once he realized it didn’t hurt all the time to go potty, he had no other problems.

I would recommend trying an elimination diet. Journal everything he eats to be able to find trends. You might also try a Gonstead chiropractor. You can find them at www.gonstead.com. Another option is a functional medicine doctor. They get to the root of the problem, unlike western medicine doctors that just want to throw medicine at you that is only a bandaid to the problem. I hope you find a solution soon.

An NP once told me to try giving them any fruit that begins with the letter P (prunes, pineapple, pears, etc.). She also said that oranges work very well too. She said that those should be eaten daily to help with constipation.

My grandson is 3 and takes Miralax daily. I have IBS w/constipation. It’s not hereditary but Miralax is a part of life! No matter what I eat or don’t eat. It’s the structure of my colon!

Miralax should start working again, it might just take some time. Increasing overall fluid intake will help the Miralax work better.
Too much fiber without enough fluids will back him up worse. Trust me, it’s happened to me!! If you load him up on fiber but don’t load him up on fluids, he will get super plugged up & uncomfortable. It’ll be like a brick sitting in his intestines.
I would stick with the Miralax and increase his fluid intake significantly. If still no improvement in 2 weeks, I’d see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
If the Miralax ends up working again with increased fluids, don’t take him off. He might have IBS-C like me, and need to take something daily (non stimulant- that’s not safe for daily use). I take 2 colace every night for years and my dr said it’s safe because it’s not a stimulant laxative, it’s stool softener. Miralax just draws water into the intestines as well, so it’s not a stimulant either. Some of us just need help going to the bathroom. I inherited IBS C from my mom.

Please ask for a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. My son is 7 and has suffered from chronic constipation since he was 6 months old. We were not referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist until he was 5 and I feel if we would have been earlier it would have helped. They can do testing to see if it is caused by a food allergy or other medical issue. It can lead to encopresis if not treated properly.

My daughter has issues with dairy and im getting her allergy tested soon. Cows milk cheese and basically and cow product plugged her up constantly. I switched my daughter to soy milk and the only dairy product she has is a little bit of cheese and it definitely became a huge difference for her. This is just my experience. All I can say maybe it’s an allergy and maybe it’s a bigger problem. I definitely would try both an allergy test and a specialist if I were you.

I give my daughter a couple of bites of activia and it helps and the doctor said that was fine

I had similar issues with my son when he was little. Best thing to do is get a referral to a pediatric G.I. specialist ( they see a LOT of this problem. They can help you determine if something he eats is bothering him, see if additional allergy/celiac testing is necessary or just guide you in general as to what could help.

You did not mention how much water he drinks daily. If you use fibre without lots of water, it can actually make constipation worse

Our daughter has suffered from constipation since she was a couple weeks old and she is now 5 years old. We have been giving her miralax since she was a baby to help keep her regular. If she gets to constipated she is up all night crying in pain for a week.

My daughter gets MiraLAX in her cup 2x a day and has been since she was a few months old. She’s 2 1/2 now. Some days she poops fine and other days it’s hard as rocks. Doctor just upped her amount to help some a month ago. Nothing else ever works to help

My grandson would actually hold his poop :poop: his mom told him he did not go she would have to help him with a suppository! He can hold it 5 to seven days! Control little stinker!

I wd give him probiotics if you haven’t done so. There are excellent choices at a health food store and they change the Ph of the intestinal tract. God bless you and your family :canada:

I had constipation for YEARS. My doctor found the problem in a blood test by chance. Mention hemochromatosis to your doctor. Mine is hereditary hemochromatosis. It is a blood disorder where the body produces too much iron and one of the main symptoms for me is constipation. It is treated with a simple phlebotomy every 3 months. The phlebotomy lowers the iron level in the blood. For me it resolved the constipation within the first couple of phlebotomy treatments.

My daughter was on miralax daily for months after having constipation issues for nearly 3 years before I got tired of treating the symptoms, not the root of the problem. Took her to a chiropractor and she was literally completely fine after the first visit. We continued to go for a few months, but that’s all it took. 4 years later and never another issue. Definitely consider chiropractic!

My daughter too. Started when she was 1 and has been hospitalized as well at 3 (she’snow 12). Activia, fiber bars from trader Joe’s, miralax and numerous enemas. Sometimes you just need to change it up. Also, A TON of water. Have her drink a lot of water. But don’t stop the miralax. Take her to a GI specialist. They can tell you what’s best.

It’s well past the point you feed him what he chooses what he wants to eat, and start being a responsible parent.
Don’t bitch about how you taught him, ’ it was his choice to give him, his way! when you choose to let him be the parent, you open the reason that he will not be a responsible adult.

Yes!! Omg it’s awful! No amount of fiber, water, whatever helped! I hope you get an answer, we never did and mine are adults now. Still constipated! Good luck!!

Peppermint water, but don’t do more than one candy cane or three small individual one. I have raised 6 kids and I guarantee by day 3 or 4, the floods of noah will commence. After that, adjust amount to help regulate.

The only that helps my toddler with his constipation are fixed feeding times at 09:00,11:00,13:00, 17:00 and 20:00.

At 17 he has a smoothie with veggies and fruit+ loads of water. If we hadn’t done that his bowl is more regular and you can predict when he’s gonna need a poop…

He’s also lactose intolerant so if he’s alittle backed up we give porridge with alittle bit of milk mixed in. It looses that up. Just check with the doctor…though…

My little fella is dairy free as anytine he has cheese in particular he gets blocked up for days on end. When he was a bubba he used to have date puree with his breakfast and as he got older he starred eating dates whole and loves them and it really helps him move his bowels.

My daughter suffered from being a baby to the point she was scared to try. It caused a little skin tag to appear but, health visitor said it was nothing to worry about unless it started bleeding or came out more. We gave our daughter prunes in the little baby pouches from supermarket. Sometimes they didn’t work then we started giving her raisens. They work a treat and she absolutely loves them! Our daughter is 20 months and she can poop normally now.

I have a granddaughter that has the same problem she takes Miralax everyday and she can’t drink milk she has almond milk and her mom puts a probiotic in the bottle to drink milk causes her to get constipated and her food to

There is a book called ‘Eat right for your type’
It has all the information around what foods you should avoid and what foods are beneficial based on your blood type. I have suffered with this forever and this book explains everything you need to know to resolve this. I would also advise on giving your son some magnesium citrate supplements daily, this acts as a stool softener.

We used Osmolax with our daughter who was prone to faecal impaction as a toddler on the advice of our paediatrician. Only a small amount daily and can be dissolved in water, juice etc. Once over the impaction we would just use it less often but still regularly to keep things moving. Summer was the worst time for it, we spent a few Christmas Nights at A&E with pain and vomiting.

Try everytime someone in the room has to go to the bathroom or poop announce it! Say I have to go take a poop and go use the restroom with him. I feel that sometimes when children are constipated they just arent comfortable with using the restroom. Normalize announcing you have to go poop!

Had the same issue with my son when he was younger. At first the Dr told me to use an enema to get things moving but eventually we had to start using Miralax. It worked and he hasn’t had any issues since.

My oldest always has problems and as unhealthy as it sounds as long as he had a bad of buttery popcorn every other day he was able to stay consistant on going to the bathroom
