I need opinions from IEP moms

I started a job working with kids that have IEPs I myself have two kids of my own that are on IEPS… DIFFERENT SCHOOLS then where I’m working I feel it does not meet the criteria with IEPs they just pull the kids out of class and have them watch a movie or play games instead of having them work on what is necessary and what they need help on and what is met in their criteria as in math social studies or science… Me having two kids of my own on IEPs makes me wonder if taking this job is worth my time… I want somebody that’s going to take care of my kids and to teach them what they need to know being on a IEP instead of just taking them out of the classroom and putting them on a tablet or TV to watch something to make time pass by

I say take and change the way they do things. The only time my son watches a movie is if it’s the last day before a holiday and all his games have to do with his ot or are for learning. That school is just lazy and probably doing the bare minimum to keep kids are ieps for the funding they get

You should be attending the IEP meetings and helping to determine what’s in the IEP. Do not let the school get away with giving your children a mediocre education because it’s hard for them to figure out what to do with certain children. It is their job and their responsibility to provide quality education to ALL children.

Some kids have to be pulled out to “play” or “watch a movie” just to get away from all other stimulus. It’s probably part of their IEP. In my sons case anyways, as well as 10 years experience in day schools, and counseling facilities. My son can get pulled out at any point to just sit in a room and fidget or play with legos…simply because the GenEd room is too stimulating.

An IEP is a legal binding document. Report the school.

Okay I have 2 children with IEPs. This is the school fault not the system. If the teachers aren’t putting in the work and taking the easy way out that what happens. I’m Very active in my kids schooling. Report and speak on this

This is my 8th year teaching and we have to document and provide concrete proof of how we follow each IEP along with meetings with the parent to discuss the plan. Ask for the proof from the person over the “pull outs” and then report them if the plan is not being followed.

I myself don’t have much advice because I have a child on an IEP and I have had to fight for her rights to learn the correct and proper way since kindergarten. Unfortunately it sounds like they do goof off a good bit. And like my daughter now they placed her in a drama class and they get to play on their phone. And I’m like what are you learning.? I would say take the job and try to change the life of a child who needs the help. That’s like my child. She needs an actual teacher that is going to sit down with her and teach her the way her IEPs States but I can’t get nobody to do it. if I put her in a private school on what you call the McKay Scholarship they wind up telling me we are a private school we don’t have to go by the IEP if we don’t like to. But duh the IEP is what gives you and the child the McKay Scholarship I mean without that there will be no money. So I’ve had my share of hard times through the years. I pray all the time it gets better. And that may be a teacher comes along that will teach her from the heart. So what I’m trying to say is maybe you can be that type of teacher. Be the time for teacher that comes along and what’s to teach from the heart and wants to see the children grow and learn!!! Maybe you can be the person that changes their life when it comes to going to school and learning

I work with special needs junior high kids. I work in a co-op (we take on the kids the districts can’t handle and are in host schools). We are a functional based program but we also teach academics. We try to teach life skills first and foremost. Whenever possible we get our kids involved with mainstream classes, currently our kids go to gym, lunch, art, and home ec. In the classroom we consistently teach math and reading. For academics, if nothing else, especially with mainstream classes it is for exposure. It is very rare we are sitting around watching movies or playing around on iPads.

Unfortunately that’s what they do now. Kids aren’t properly learning to their abilities. They just get by in school now.

I’d report the school

Unfortunately that is modern education. “Teachers” don’t teach anymore. They hand out ipads and dictate what apps get opened. They don’t want to work let alone educate, just an easy paycheck. If you want your child to have a real education and not be fobbed off by an electronic babysitter and a useless teacher you’ll have to homeschool and use books and not tech.
