My 1-year-old does not like milk: Advice?

Hey, mamas, I need some advice. My son just turned 1. I’ve been trying to get him off his formula and onto milk. I’ve tried mixing his formula with milk. I’ve tried 1%, 2%, and whole milk. I’ve tried mixing a little chocolate with his milk. He rejects all of it. I even went as far as buying a toddler milk mix that looks like his formula can. He hates it. Literally chucks the bottle the minute he tastes it. He drinks juice just fine and eats just about everything I give him. But milk is really challenging, and it’s not like I just started introducing it, I tried with a little here and there daily for a couple of months before he turned 1. I can’t afford to keep buying formula for him to drink regularly as he wants. He has a bottle of formula for his morning and afternoon nap also when he goes to bed. Along with breakfast and lunch. I know that probably seems like a lot, but he is a healthy, hungry boy. Is there anything anyone can suggest to get maybe him more interested in milk just so he can have it when he goes to sleep as if it’s his formula. Thank you in advance.

If he is eating a well balanced diet with dairy products then there is NO need for milk at all

You can totally try almond milk or soy milk. We did that for about a year, my son just got on regular milk and he’s 2 now. Plus it’s a lot cheaper than formula

Try almond milk. He may like it.

Instead of putting the milk in a bottle try putting it in a sippy cup

U can also try strawberry milk or enough

Maybe almond or something of likes?

They don’t NEED milk once formula is done. Let him have water. Just make sure he’s eating well for all his nutrients. Otherwise don’t force milk on him. It causes digestion problems for a reason. It wasn’t made for human consumption in the first place.

Our pediatrician also said if our girl was getting a balanced diet, no need for milk. Can give a daily vitamin and calcium supplement if needed. Almond milk is what we give our daughter. Our pediatrician was also fine with that, but when she stopped drinking it she said there really is no need

I had to warm the milk some before my daughter would take it, but now she does fine. Maybe try that? Or almond milk you could try.

I would try other kinds of milk. Or start giving plenty of yogurts and cheeses and other dairy because the formula needs to go in the trash can along with the baby bottle.

Warm it up maybe after 1 they don’t have to have milk water is fine as long as they are getting plenty of other nutrients

Kids don’t need milk as long as he has a healthy balanced diet. Juice is great but not over abundance of it.
Have you tried pedicure? Or even almond milk? Try the vanilla one!

My daughter never drank whole milk (or any milk) up until recently she’s 4 now. It use to make her gag . Her doctor wasn’t concerned about it.

No need for milk, but try mixing less formula in so it’s watered down Abit maybe that’ll help wheen him off of formula.

As long as he likes cheese and yogurt, my pediatrician said no worries …he finally started liking Milk around 2, but I use skim with strawberry nesquick:woman_shrugging:t3::woman_shrugging:t3::woman_shrugging:t3:don’t judge me:joy::joy::joy:

Have you tried Farley’s? It’s the only way my mom could get my sister to drink milk as a child.

My boy liked lactaid better, its almost sweeter, it went better with his belly too.

Kids dont need to drink a ton of milk…it’s loaded with sugar anyway…as long as he is getting calcium through his diet…he’s fine…my kids drink mostly water…but they eat cheese/yogurt/sour cream/tons of veggies…we rarely do juice either bc it’s full of sugar too…you are a great mom for trying all those options…but he will be fine…if you’re still worried give him a vitamin and call it a day…keep on doing your best!

I had to just keep giving my son the milk and stopped giving him formula once he realized thats all he’d get not formula he eventually gave in and started drinking the milk. But like someone else stated as long as he is eating a balanced meals he no longer needs milk like that anyways. Biggest thing is to stop giving in with the formula the more u give it to him the longer it will take for him to accept the milk itself. And honestly the best thing to be in a bottle during naps would be water as anything else really isn’t good for the health of his teeth as im sure your aware of. Good luck

I know you said you’ve tried mixing it, and what I had to do with my son was start off with like 7oz formula then 1oz milk then a few days later I did 6 and 2 and so on and then once it was straight milk I put a little baby cereal in it to make it thicker and eventually he finally caught on. I also have to warm the milk or he refuses it. He’s 13 months and I started doing that at 11 months

My youngest son (16 months) had tummy issues with regular milk. So, we do vanilla almond milk and strawberry Pediasure for more nutrients. He has always been a big boy, and above average, and the pediatrician says he is staying on the right path height and weight wise… so I would give that a go if I were you.

Stop giving him milk and dairy. Not everyone likes it. People do not need cows breast milk .

Milk is just straight sugar. So, it’s not necessary. You can give him water and vitamins.

My daughter wouldn’t drink milk at all unless I warmed it up for her. It took a bit to get her into drinking cold things, juice and water included but now she drinks anything in her cup

My granddaughtercwont drink milk either and shes three. She likes soy milk and dietian says it ok

I had trouble getting my son to drink regularly milk too. I always thought maybe it was because my breastmilk was sweeter so I mixed a little bit of honey into the milk

I did the vanilla flavored toddler formula and my son liked that but hated the plain and he liked vanilla almond milk too but hates regualr milk in general still and hes 2

Milk really isn’t a necessity. If he is eating solid foods just fine that really is enough. There’s no real evidence that consuming dairy does much of anything

My daughter is doing same thing she has to drink toddler formula.

He’ll eventually take it. I had a hard time with my son too. I would blend in fresh strawberries and he would drink it. I didn’t give him anything else to drink besides water. Her got to a point where water was too bland for him, so he finally started drinking milk. Hang in there.

Get some pedisure it’s in the baby isle and it’s like milk and it helps with diets

My daughter was the same way. I just add a little nesquick. She likes the strawberry flavor. I just add enough to add some color… and it has some added vitamins.

Warm it up. Just like formula. That’s the only way my kiddos would start taking it when we made the switch. Eventually they will start taking it cold but it takes time

When we stopped the formula with my daughter, she refused to drink milk. We substituted with foods high in vitamin D until she got used to the taste of milk. They don’t NEED milk, it’s just the vitamin D. Just give him time to adjust and substitute with food high in vitamin D in the meantime.

Just lactose free milk maybe and if not just stick to water

Try chocolate ir strawberry milk

Try almond or soy milk

Same issue here. Wouldn’t go from formula to milk. He’s now 2 and still don’t like the taste of milk. But he will eat cereal with it in there. That’s about it. I give him cheese or yogurts to substitute for the milk. That’s all I can do until maybe when he gets older and grows to like milk on his own

My daughter was the same way. So we switched to Oat milk, its lactose and dairy free as well.

My one year old still has formula but only when she first gets up and before bed. I dropped all other bottles when weaning in replacement of a meal. Maybe offer him an extra yoghurt/piece of fruit/snack item in place of other bottles he has now and only offer him formula before bed and when he wakes up? At least he still gets the formula he likes but would last you much longer than what it is now with the amount he’s having at the moment?? good luck.

Don’t give anything but water for sleeping and if you just take away all other options then he will give in and take it but really he needs only one or two cups with milk and very little juice. His main source to drink should be water and a healthy diet with foods that offer him most of the calcium and vitamins A and D.

Milk is not necessary. My third daughter went straight from formula to water and she has never had anything other than water, she will be three in a couple of weeks

Dont offer it, not like at 1 they need much milk anyways. Offer water instead, and a cup of milk with meals :woman_shrugging:

Don’t give him the formula. He’ll drink the milk eventually. Give him toddler formula if you have to, but I would stop giving in to him with the baby formula.

As long as hes getting these food in his diet he does not need milk!

I have no advice.
I’m having same problem
Son was breastfed up until 15 months and now I’m done breastfeeding :breast_feeding: and he’s not.
He won’t take a bottle or sippy cup or milk or toddler powder milk :milk_glass:
I’m at a loss

Milk will make me sick even as an adult I honestly take him off the formula he doesn’t need it anymore but if he will eat products that have milk in it like cheese and yogurt he’ll be fine, also fyi milk not just sugar it has fats and calcium that is needed but if he can’t tolerate it try a diffrent different kind if milk like almand or even that lactate milk stuff

My son didn’t drink milk either when he turned 1 so made sure he had 1 bottle worth of breastmilk a day he’s 4 now and last couple yrs he’s been good with 1% milk

Try warming it up mine was the same was

My daughter is 4 and still hates milk. She rejected formula at 10 months and no matter what me or her dr did she did not drink it. No flavoring or different kinds (soy almond goat etc) she would not drink. We gave her vitamins and she eats cheese, yogurt and ice cream fine so her dr wasn’t too concerned as she was still getting her milk and calcium just in different forms.

He doesn’t need milk so it’s okay! My girls both prefer water over everything. :woman_shrugging:t2::yum: if you’re worried about his calcium just make sure he eats a well balanced diet.

My eldest went from formula to water at 1 because of the same. If they are eating fine there’s no need for milk.

My son was the same way. He’s two and a half and just started to drink milk. I even tried coconut, rice and oat mills. Nothing. :see_no_evil: But I honestly wouldn’t worry about it as long as he’s getting calcium from somewhere. I just gave my son a daily calcium/vitamin d vitamin (a gummy I found at target. It said 4+ give two a day. So I just gave him one after talking to his pediatrician) and made sure he ate foods high in calcium.

Transition to almond or coconut milk and little my little cow milk it’s easier for there bellies

I am 53 and stopped drinking milk at 6 mth and still dont drink it never have try water good time to start a better habit.

Mine did the same thing, and pediatrician suggested Vitamin D drops. Talk to doctor!

Consistency is key! My eldest needed it warm until he got used to it. My third refused as well, so I gave her a very little strawberry nesquick and she liked it. Find whatever works for you and stick with it. He will eventually get used to it

Milk at bedtime can cause milk rot on teeth. Try water in the bottles when putting them down to bed. If they toss it, it’s a good way to get rid of the bottle.

My grandson didn’t either and it upset his belly. Try the almond milk (or as we call it, Nut juice :star_struck:)

Try using powdered milk. That’s what I did with my daughter to get her off formula and it worked

My boy was the same, hes now 15 months and on full cows milk, I did small amounts with his formula, and gradually upped it, he hated it at first and refused it, but I just kept offering it to him, and he eventually got used to the taste and then accepted it, i wasted a bit if formula and milk while he adjusted, as gross as it sounds, I put it in the fridge and used it for my coffees.

Try mountain dew, it tastes ALOT better

try maybe a soy milk? idk my kids refused formula once i began introducing milk… hope youre able to figure this one out

Mine is the same way as soon as I took the bottle away at 14 months he totally stopped drinking milk! Dr says he gets what he needs in his foods, cheese, yogurt, ect. But I believe children need milk regardless so I tried EVERYTHING and the ONLY thing that he would drink is fairlife strawberry milk! I guess it tastes more like juice than milk but still it’s milk and I’m good with that!

HUGE NO to flavored milk. There’s more sugar in flavored milk than nutritional value of the milk.
If your child doesn’t like milk, give them water. They do not need milk if they are getting calcium elsewhere in their diet.
I also say no to juice. Same as flavored milk that the sugar content is worse than the nutritional value of the other ingredients.

My daughter didn’t like it until 22 months. I made sure she got calcium from other sources. Cows milk isn’t the only source.

Do you warm it up? My nephew will throw his cup as soon as he taste the milk if it’s not warmed up. My kids did the same.

He doesn’t need cows milk. It isn’t necessary, you can give him other things that have the same nutrients.

I never liked Milk, I still don’t

Nothing wrong with a sippy cup of water as long as he’s eating regular, healthy meals and snacks.

My son was the same way. I started giving him PediaSure and he liked that more. He’s three now and will drink chocolate milk and not white. I think it’s fine if he doesn’t drink milk as long as he is eating food that has milk in it. Like yogurt and cheese. My son smashes gogurts. Anything with calcium really.

I think you need to consult his pediatrician. 1 is too young to wean him off of formula. Remember, cows milk is designed for cows, not us. We drink milk because it’s there & available, not because it’s good for us. There may be some supplements that your pediatrician can suggest. Your son may like soy, almond or coconut milk better. Also, if you decide on one of the alternative milks, make sure they don’t have Carageen in the ingredients. Carageen is an inflamitory additive that is used as a filler in some of the milk substitutes & it can upset his stomach! I have to stay away from it because it’s a trigger for Crohn’s Disease, which I have. I had to research what was making me sick!!! Good luck!

My granddaughter has never liked milk she drinks coconut milk, almond milk, other healthy or organic stuff you have lots of options

Almond milk. My daughter absolutely refuses to drink cows milk. 2%, 1%, whole, chocolate, strawberry. Nothing. I get reduced sugar almond milk and she loves it

First thing is he needs off the bottle. Bottle = formula/breast milk to baby’s. My daughter hated milk and still hates it at 18 months. Try coconut milk or almond milk. If never of those work then juice it is. My daughter will only drink juices and water. But I also hate milk so that might be why.

Then dont try to force it :woman_shrugging: it’s not a necessity there are options

Have you tried lactose free milk?

Try like almond or cashew milk. He doesnt even need milk. Just give him water

I don’t like milk. Try pediasure and water. No more juice he may like the sweetness of the formula and juice

Time to give up the bottle As soon as my kids turned 1 the bottle was gone soppy cups only & no sugary drinks

Get chocolate or strawberry flavor liquid or powder to add to his milk! Then wean him from flavors

Just give him other stuff to drink. Don’t add extra sugar like chocolate or strawberry and don’t be fooled by the “ oh there’s vitamins” in that crap. You’re going to turn your kid into a sugar addict. Plain old water is fine. Also plenty of liquid in fruits and veggies so offer those. Juice is a major sugar trap too and so much also has all the “unnatural additives” that they will market as perfectly fine. Kids need healthy whole foods not a ton of processed crap. Don’t believe me? Take a walk around through Walmart and then a Whole Foods type of store. (You can get healthy food at Walmart too but for the sake of experiment go with me on this) now look at what’s on the parents carts and look at the kids with them. See how healthy they appear. Observe the behaviors around you. One afternoon of observation should convince you of all you need to know about what’s better for your kids nutritionally.

Maybe warm the milk a little or try other milks - cashew coconut etc.
My kids all love milk BUT my youngest daughter will ONLY drink chocolate milk. I personally dislike milk I’ll drink the substitutes sometimes but normally I just drink water.
Formula is expensive but if he drinks it deal with it. Maybe cut one bottle out a week and replace it w milk. Replace same bottle (lunch bottle) for a week or two w milk and see how he does that way.

Mix the milk in with his formula. I started doing that around 11months with my daughter and each week I’d add more and more so by a year old she was off of formula

Protein Nut milk by Silk. Has even more of what they need and less of what they don’t

My two yr old was the same way. I gave her the toddler milk mix and she liked that. But I just kept offering her milk and she eventually started drinking it

Some kids just don’t like milk as long as eating regular food take bottle away give sippy cups with water or juice my one daughter was same way this was advice from pediatrician

Goats milk! But honestly if he likes avocados, he can eat that instead of drinking milk and get what he needs from it!

Will he eat yogurt? Give him water and juice to drink and try yogurt for the calcium. He may be a little too young for this but we would get gogurts and freeze them and my son loves them

Bottles need to go at 1, try soy or almond. Also avoid sugary drinks like juice or chocolate or strawberry especially at bedtime. it’s not good for them or their teeth

I really don’t have advice on a way to get him to drink more milk BUT allowing a child to drink milk from a bottle in bed can result in a dental condition called “Milk Mouth” where he will need major dental work before he is three!!! I never let mine take a bottle of milk to bed as my step sister worked with a dentist who warned us about this. Water only. As for his age…my children were taken off the bottle at age 1. So he should be weaned off of it by now.

Almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk. He doesn’t even need milk if he eats good. Definitely not all the extra sugar from juice. Just water to drink in a cup.

Replace it with broccoli, kale, collard green. And orange juice w viTamin d and calcium is

I can’t stand milk either. He might like almond milk. Because its sweeter. But that might be the problem. The formula and juice are sweet. But juice is acidic and can cause diaper rash.

Cut one at a time, I’d probably start with the morning bottle.

My oldest was the same way. It’s not a big deal as long as he’s eating food.

My son was the same way, we just gave him calcium in other foods (yogurt and cheese) and stopped the bottle! He will be fine! Mine still doesn’t like milk at 4 years old but neither do i at 32 so i don’t blame him haha

i wouldnt stress too much on this yes whole milk is good for them but you can give it in other ways like yogurt or cheese just make sure you get the whole part so for instance get whole milk yogurt on light try almond or cashew milk or even goats milk would do too my son hated formula once i stopped breast feeding took him a good month to get used to it just keep trying
