My 13 year old still wets the bed

Go to a second urologist there’s so many bladder control techniques now.

My daughter had that problem. She had all the testing they didn’t know what was wrong. When she turned 14 she stopped. When she was an adult they finally found out that she had a dual kidney system and she would get really bad kidney infections to the point she would pass out. It was scary

lil helpers is a cloth diaper company, they make “lifesaver mats” which are basically huge waterproof blankets that are super soft (don’t feel waterproof). Lots of people have used these for bed wetting kiddos, hope this helps

I was a bed wetter until I was around 14, tried everything from alarms to no drinks before bed, waking up to go during the night. Nothing worked. It was so upsetting as I wanted to go to sleepovers but was too scared and when I was brave, I wet their bed and was bullied for it. I ended up taking a tablet every night and it didn’t really work, I just grew out of it. My eldest is 8 and wet the bed every night. I bought a waterproof mattress to make it easier for cleaning. The website Eric is a very good site, I’ve seen it mentioned a few times. Always reassure your child and try not to get upset or angry at them, it makes them more upset and could lead to it happening more.

Have you checked for diabetes?

If his dad has the same issue, could just be genetics. My kiddos wear pullups at ages 11 and 12 (my 6 year old skipped having this problem) but it was summed up to genetics from my husband’s dad’s side. The men on that side wet the bed into their teen years prior to outgrowing it. We did counseling. Doctors. Medications. My kiddos still pee through, we have the protected sheet for their mattresses. They don’t drink after 7pm - bedtime 8pm. And I remind them nightly to put pullups on. It’s hard but sometimes there truly seems to be nothing to do.

Put nothing in the drawer but pull-ups and maybe without having boxers or underwear he’ll have no choice

Easy… they make medicine for it… go to the doctor… go on about your life… no need to ask strangers for advice or any of that…

My nephew took medication that helped until he finally stopped.

They make meds that help. Talk to his primary Dr. My son is 13 and still has accidents too. They just sleep to sound.

If it were diabetes he would’ve died by now, she said he’s always done it. Have you tryed the meds that curb nighttime peeing? Set multiple alarms to get up and pee and demand he do this. It will train his body. He has to be responsible for this. This could ruin his social life later. He needs a regimen. He needs to totally clean up after himself too. And at some point, if he did not and continued ruining mattresses etc. Then he would need to contribute $$ for a replacement. If this is indeed a lifetime problem. He needs to be very proactive. Also, might not be a terrible idea to check for sleep disorders. He could be in such deep sleep that he can’t recognize the urge

He may need to be checked for Type 1 Diabetes. Especially if he is super skinny and stays thirsty and hungry all the time… Bed wetting is one of the symptoms. I found out the hard way when I nearly lost my daughter to undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes

Ask your Dr about DDAVP. It’s a synthetic copy of a natural chemical that the body produces in order to keep the urge to urinate down to a minimum during sleep. I’m not a doctor. But I did stay at a holiday Inn express last night…

DDAVP comes as a nasal spray. I know of 2 older children successfully treated with it.

If the father has the issue it has to do with genetics, I will go and get them tested for further things. Don’t rule out anything until you’ve ruled out everything.

Bladder issue I am think .

Could be iratble bladder disorder my grandson has medication for it also I been told anything with blackcurrant can make it worse

I peed the bed until I was his age or a little after. I did grow out of it too.

Idk about advice on how to make him more responsible for it but my little brother had this issue and he had to take medicine for it and we also had to cut the red coloring in drinks and food out of his diet.

sometimes the kidneys produce too much urine. there’s a medicine to help slow down production of urine. that might be something to look into.

We just did the Therapee system for my daughter and within 2 months she was completely night trained. Prior to, she was wetting the bed every single night. We completed the system 4 months ago and she has only had 4 accidents since. We ordered through Amazon.

I had this issue when I was younger. Ended up that my bladder was to small, and they had to stretch it.

Do not give him anything to drink after 6 PM.

Have you tried taking milk products away from him. My children all have lactose intolerance. My son suffered with pain and my youngest daughter wet the bed do to lactose irritation to the bladder. As soon as I took the milk products away it all stopped. I suffer from it also and must have lactose free products. There are so many lactose free products so no need to worry about lack of calcium. Please just try it. It worked for us I hope it works for you.

Go to the bed wetting store online. They have an alarm that will go off the minute it detects moisture. It is a way of training your child to wake up to go.

Is he being bullied at school or somewhere else? No one is abusing him ? These can be triggers … trust me… try therapy is nothing else helps… best of luck…

Stop him from drinking after 7 pm, no nothing. Especially tea,

So me and my sister did this till we was all 14, 16.
We each have one child who does.
My daughter is the one who still does at almost 18. All test came back clear.
The doc prescribed med that helps her hold it longer which she makes it all night now.
She going to a dorm next may so glad we found something to worl6

Don’t let him drink anything 2hrs. Before bed. And make sure he pees before going to bed. Even if you have to run the water. For the first few nights wake him up a couple of times and have him try and pee.

I pee before going to bed every night. I would 100% still be a bed wetter if I didn’t

It’s a hormone issue he’ll probably grow out of it soon. Stop torturing the poor boy.

Are his appendix ok? A family friend had this until his appendix burst, almost killing him

My daughter wet the bed until she was 16. And then one day, she stopped. She slept like a rock. Thru alarms, me trying to wake her, everything. But at 6 am, when the “get up for the day” alarm went off, her eyes would fly open and she’d jump out of bed ready for the day.

Maybe he sleeping too hard? Set a an alarm for 12 and 3, and limit drinks after 8pm? You might have to get up for a week or so at those times and make sure he’s getting up to use the restroom. Mahe due he goes to the toilet, even if he feels like he doesn’t need to go. Run the sink water. Try all of the tricks.

Get him checked my brother had this problem! They claimed over active bladder until they discovered he actually had diabetes

My son is 24 and still has this issue. urologist says he has small bladder and allergic to caffeine. My son said that the caffeine restrictions seems to help with not drinking anything with caffeine but he still has issues. He’s tried the pills but doesn’t really help. Not sure if there is a cure really. He uses an apholstry cleaner to clean his mattress but even that gets tiring.

Try a potty alarm! They clip to the underwear and as soon as it senses any moisture it’ll go off and he can get up and use the restroom.

My 9 year old was still wearing pull ups until a few months ago and I now make her go wee b4 she sleeps, stop drinks after tea and I get her out between 12 and 2 for a wee and she’s been dry now for about 3-4 weeks with a couple accidents xx

My son is 14 and on meds for it.

There used to be a medication to help that worked great. My kids were bed wetters until 10 . There’s a flap in their urethra that remains open . The medicine would help close it at night . Ask your Dr about it. Its definitely a physical thing . Good luck !!! So sorry for your son, its so hard on them :disappointed:.

I was gonna say he will grow out of it but if his dad still does it then it may be genetic and he may nit grow out of it. My brother peed the bed until he was 15 and me til i was at least 13. We both grew out of it. My 6 yr old pees the bed everynight. I just do no fluids before bed and make she he pees before bed. Thats all i really can do

You want him to be more responsible but you just said his dad has the same issue as an adult, and you haven’t thought to get further medical advice or something? I’m sure it’s far more common than you think.

My cousin had that issue for ever and my aunt took him to a different doctor and they said his kidneys where the size of a 2year olds they went in and stretched them and he hasnt had that issue at all any more

I’m stuck on the fact you think it’s normal because his father (a grown man) still does it. that is laziness and nothing more.

Consider having him checked for anxiety or something like possible ADHD. I was told this is a manifestation of disorders along these lines. Their bodies are so used to being in discomfort either mentally or physically, so they push off needing to use the restroom and associate doing so with being uncomfortable.

Have they ever check him for a extra kidney my cousin had this problem and they found a 3rd kidney

I have went through this with one of my kids. They were 14 when it stopped. I used to try everything from making sure they didn’t have nothing to drink after a certain time, bathroom before bed, waking them up… etc. I found the more I stressed about it with them the more stress it added on them. I took a step back and within a few months accidents were happening less often.
I’ve heard it can be a hereditary thing or sometimes something a chiropractor can help. Best of luck and know you aren’t alone.

What about stopping drinks after a certain time?

My daughter had sleep apnea. we had to have her tonsils removed and after that she stopped the bed wetting

Watch what he drinks before bed.wake him up often.

I am raising a handicapped son. When training him at night, a doctor had me give him a prescription nasal spray to do at night. . . It consecrated his urine for 8 hours at night. It worked.

Have they checked his blood glucose?

Take him to another urologist also get an alarm that they wear when going to bed. It senses first drops of urine and will alarm and wake them up to go to restroom.

Waterproof covers for the bed. I had one for my daughter’s mattress and I know they make some for all types of sized beds.

The ere is a medicine they can give him. Ask you primary care or urologist about it

I had the same issue when I was he’s age I stopped wetting the bed at 17 my mum found out I had a weak bladder, I still have problems now and I’m 40 years old, try not to worry xx

My 10 year old still wets bed I just found out her left kidney is to small have u had mris or cat scans done? I was in shock when i learned this she is now taking oxybutnin 5mg twice a day and physical therapy for belly strength

My son did it until he was 11. Don’t drink anything with berries in from lunch time. This helped a lot. We also brought a bed alarm that went off as soon as he started to wet the bed

Look into sleep disorders… had this issues with one of my sons years ago. It wasn’t a physical issue. Was a sleep disorder… no meds. I’m sorry I can’t remember the name of the company ( he’s a grown man now) but I’m about six weeks he stopped. Was a mattress pad ( hooked to a battery) that sounded an alarm soon as the bed became wet. There a program to follow , like getting him
Up and awake , to go to the bathroom and then back to bed. A little too complicated to explain the whole process, but it worked! Ps. The services with the company was covers by medical insurance! Good luck!

I’ve heard chiropractor can assist with this…

I feel you, my 10 year old and 7 year old still wet the bed, they have mattress protectors on and i wish i could get the alarm for them but they share a room with their 5 year old brother and their sisters are in the room next to them aged 1 & 5 and the alarm would wake all of them up. We ended up finding out our eldest has type 1 diabetes but even tho it’s well managed now, he sleeps so deeply he doesn’t even notice till morning We’ve tried no drinks after a certain time, peeing every half hour before bed time, waking them during the night. Sometimes with the eldest it’s so much that it ends up dripping off the bed, we’ve tried the over night pull-ups but the eldest just sets straight through them.

I’m having same problem I bought the washable chucks from Amazon so i don’t have to keep pulling the mattress cover mine is 8

It may “run” in families and stop at the same time that others stopped. Ask pediatrician. This may resolve on it’s own if alarms, reducing water and other methods haven’t worked.

My ex husband wet the bed all the time.

Maybe try getting him to a sleep specialist? Maybe a sleep study to see what’s causing the issue?

I know someone who had this issue. They recommended having his bladder stretched….

Maybe see if they can give him meds to help with urinary incontinence…maybe weak bladder issue…

No dairy at all within 3 hours of bed. No fluids within an hour of bed. Bladder train: He needs to go to the bathroom at least once every 2 hours. Cut out sodas and snacks and drinks with lots of artifical food coloring and cut out red all together except special occasions. This helped my daughter. Also ensure he’s hydrated and doesn’t have constipation issues. Also, there’s medication the urologist can give him. If they’re not willing to, switch to a pediatric urologist.

Doxylamine succinate. The original unisom. I wet the bed until I was 12 and I stopped when the docs gave it to me.

As a child i too wet the bed. When i was 10 my mother took me to a hypnotist, who introduced a dream, in which i found myself looking for a toilet to use. Every one i found was either broken or was missing, so i had to wake up to go to my own toilet. It worked. I am now 66 years old, and i still have that dream. I still get up and go to the toilet then. I actually have a bladder condition, which was discovered in adulthood, which was the reason that i was bed wetting, as it turns out! I don’t drink alcohol, as i discovered that if i get drunk, i sleep too deeply, and wet the bed, because i don’t then have the dream. For me that worked, but may not for everyone. Good luck with whatever way you go forward. Best wishes :heart:

It’s a sad thing for him

My son stopped wetting the bed at 14.

Could it be father/son have a brain disorder? Perhaps they might inquire about having a sleep study done on them to determine the depth of sleep they are in, when this happens. Deep sleep could trigger this. Not to frighten you, but I had a friend who this happened to ( but her bowels let loose also) and the doctor at ER told her that she ‘died’ but eventually her brain gave the signal to inhale/exhale to bring her back to life. Few people survive from that. It only happened once to her. She was in her late 30’s. ( Now she is in her 40’s). My husband was sitting on our front porch. Was completely awake. He said after awhile he felt a very hard pain in his chest. He then realized he hadn’t inhaled! When he did…the pain went away. The doctor said the brain did not give the signal to his lungs to inhale. When he realized he needed to inhale, he was fine. We took him to his dr and found he has signs of dementia which part of the disease is the brain shrinking and the signals aren’t always sent from the brain to other places in the body to ‘work’. This is the pricess of how and why dementia kills people.

Doxylamine Succinate. I would ask his doctor about it but I know I personally had many patients use it for bladder control and it helped so much.

I did this until 11 and then I guess I grew out of it. But have you had his bladder checked. Sometimes the bladder does not grow as fast as it should. Also he may just sleep so hard he does not wake up. That was my issue.

Check for sugar diabetes.

Go back to your Dr and get them to look for an overactive Bladder. There is medication to help with this. My daughter had the same thing… don’t leave it untreated

They make prescription medication that will stop the ability to pee for so long. They won until they wake up the next day. I’d ask for medication for sure.

I had the same issue for years as a kid because of stress. My parents separated and I got away from my mama and it stopped on it’s own. He may be stressed about something that’s affecting him. Nervous or stressed issues cause this, too. When my mom was out of my life for good, my nervousness and stress was gone. I never wet the bed again. I was 17, actually.

My oldest will be 16 and still has issues with this. We had all the test and sleep studies nothing helped. He started a adhd medicine and a medicine for bed wetting and it worked. He was been on it for almost three years. He can now go with out it a couple night with out wetting. But still the occasional accident. Desmopressin. Also there is a all natural Medicine that also worked. But insurance wouldn’t help on price. It’s cheaper but it takes so more since they aren’t small toddlers anymore. Boiron Causticum is the name of it. Best of luck to you and your son.

It’s also a sign of a child being molested. Not accusing anyone but as a mother I would investigate. Talking from experience😢

It can be genetic. Bed wetting is more common than people realize because it’s taboo for adults to admit they have the issue.

USUALLY, when they hit puberty, they stop
