Hi mommas! FTM to a 7.5 month old baby boy. I am searching for some advice. A little backstory, I am a stay at home mom and have fed my son only from the breast. He will not take a bottle. I have tried leaving him with MIL with pumped milk and a bottle and he will not eat the entire time until he gets home. I am wanting more flexibility to be able to let my son spend time with the family away from home, but I can’t leave him really because he refuses to eat from a bottle. I have gotten up with my son for every single night waking, Fuss, cry, cluster feed his entire life. My husband so desperately wants to be able to help but my son will not take the bottle. I am feel stressed and hopeless. I want to be able to enjoy a date night with my husband again and maybe go back to work part time to help out financially more, but none of this is possible until my son will take a bottle. Any advice would be helpful! I am open to still feeding at the breast AND bottle but I can’t just feed from the breast only anymore I’m exhausted and only 1 person. ( I do want to say I am extremely blessed to be able to have the opportunity to breastfeed and stay home so I am not complaining at all about that.) I just want others to be able to help me out when I need it. TIA
Have you tried a sippy cup ?
He can smell you. Have someone else do it when you are not there to get him used to it.
Agree try a sippy cup
Introduce him to some food and a sippy is a great idea.
Both my kids were like this. Never took a bottle. Ever. Go directly to a sippy cup! Make sure he gets filled up with baby food, age appropriate cereals, yogurt etc. Hang in there. You’re doing great!
Tommee Tippee bottles worked best for my daughter when I had to go back to work and was still nursing And maybe try them or him holding something that smells like you so he smells mama.
Some babys gag from a bottle or a binky I would talk to the pediatrician
They make a nipple and a certain type of bottle that the nipple is shaped and similar to your breast. I’m sorry I cannot remember the brand
What kind of bottle have you tried? My middle child would only use mam. I would try different bottles. Also I agree about having someone else try to feed baby.
My youngest refused the bottle too. I also worked part time. It didn’t matter what bottle or nipple, breast milk or formula. She just went without while I was at work and was fed baby food. As soon as I’d get off I’d nurse her and she’d be good.
Make sure baby is being pace fed from a bottle. Try different bottles until you find one he will take. This is why i introduced a bottle early (4-6 weeks with my son, 4 days with my daughter) when breastfeeding. Have yet to have an issue getting them to take any bottle offered.
I had the same problem with my first born. No bottle no dummy. He simply refused to be fed… i kept on going for 2years on breast… you will have lots of crying for 3 day but try using a bottle. I used tommee tippee as it is shaped closer to the nipple. You can also try telling your husband to feed him and remove yourself from the room as he will still smell you !! Keep strong mamma you can do it
I was in the same situation. Bought so many bottles. The Mam bottles where the only ones she would take.
I tried starting my oldest with a bottle around 8 weeks. He never really took it, would refuse for husband and daycare. We got to a point where my husband would bring him to my work for my lunch everyday because I worked 12 hour shifts. Only real resolution was once he started solids.
Try these!! Nanobebe Breast Milk Baby Bottle - 3pk/15oz Teal : Target
I’ve heard amazing things about them & our pediatrician recommended them to us as well.
Try drinking straight from a cup, assisted, or with a straw. Mine wouldn’t take a bottle either. He just started using a straw at 14 months. He preferred to drink from a regular cup. He didn’t even like sippy cups.
My little girl is still like this she’s 17 months I’ve accepted it sadly
Try the Minbie bottle. It’s Teet is specifically made like a nipple for babys who won’t take to a bottle.
Advent bottles were my go to! They’re recommended for breastfeeding and never caused nipples confusion. It could be the flow also, maybe it’s not fast enough for him at 7.5 months? Also maybe try to put a little milk on the tip so he can realize what it is.
My oldest never took a bottle, we bought every one you can get and she still refused. I was finally able to start doing things when she turned one and I started giving her more solids then breast. I decided to go back to work a month after she turned one so she would have solids and a sippy but when I was home she would have the breast for bed/nap time. My family would use one of my shirts and try a bottle, you name it we done it and she absolutely refused. It is exhausting and my husband was also discouraged because he was never able to feed her a bottle so with our second we done strictly bottle but I was going back to work so I couldn’t take the chance of her not taking one. It’s exhausting and sometimes overwhelming but you got this momma. Best of luck!
I hsd to trick my son, I would breastfeed for a minute then slowly stick the bottle in his mouth and after a few weeks he would take the bottle without me having to breastfeed and I would have his cheek against my skin while I snuck the bottle in
He might be ready for a sippy cup. My 11 month old started refusing to take a bottle at 7 months (while breastfeeding), so I switched him to a sippy & he has no issues with it.
My youngest was the same way… She actually has only ever had 4 bottles her whole life at 19 months old. At 16 months we stopped day feeding and I’ll say it’s heart wrenching and a living hell to refuse them of it. I went straight to sippy cups and she took well at 11 months.
Some kids just won’t take a bottle and unfortunately sometimes we have to accept that. Both my kids refused a bottle, no matter how many I tried.
A lot of mom’s have dealt with this an finding the right nipple for the bottles are usually the issue. I don’t understand why mom’s don’t alternate breast an bottle…
I went through this with my boy and he was same age 6-7 months. I tried every bottle and finally he slowly tried with the AVENT bottle the nipple is wider and similar to breastnipple. Try giving him the bottle when you know he’s not too hungry and maybe he will decide to test it out? I did that with my Bebe and it seemed to work. Hope you both find something that works
Went through this with both boys! He finally started drinking water out of a sippy at around a year. It was an Elmo straw sippy. He still wont take breastmilk from anything though. So probably not much help. We tried all the bottles. Nothing worked. Boys seem to be stubborn. Never had an issue with my daughter taking a bottle!
Mine was the same just breastfeed and this was the only bottle he took
Try to find a bottle/ nipple that looks like your nipple after your baby is done eating. My daughter would flatten mine so we went with NUK, my son however never took a bottle and went straight to a sippy cup with a straw
I put a little sugar on the nipple of a bottle that resembled my nipple and took a week or so but we got there.
My youngest was this way and I had to work when she was 6 months. For a few days her dad has to literally syringe or spoon feed her breast milk that he put a little bit of baby cereal in. She’d scream if you put a bottle in her mouth. So stressful . Spent soooo much money on different special bottles. She liked her sippy cup with handles! And then eventually let dad cuddle her with a bottle but she had to hold it
Went thru this with my daughter, i just kept leaving her with nanah for longer and longer periods of time, and they would offer solids too, she would take the solids and that seem to suffice untill i got back…we BF untill she was 3 years old and even then shed wouldnt take a bottle or cup of breast milk she eventually took a cup with other drink in it…like water, koolaid, tea…
Try a cup, so its totally different, you can actually use a cup from birth if needed… they look like little shot glasses…
You should of breast fed and used bottle from beginning.
Leave something with your scent when you leave him with someone else.
Girl I understand I breastfed my youngest until she was 15 months old and she would not take a bottle. I would pump and she wouldn’t take it. I was so exhausted she would wake up at least every hr at night and she wanted no one else but me. What I did was just dealt with it until i weaned her from breastfeeding. Good luck to you
You have to try different bottle nipples.
Have him checked for a tongue tie
Mine preferred a sippy cup
Try the hospital nipples. Worked for my kid
Comotomo bottles that have different flow level nipples are what I finally got my granddaughter to take from me. My awesome daughter in law researched & we tried a bunch of others but this is the one she finally took her mama’s milk from.
Exactly, soft sippy cup. Are you trying different bottles? Playtex maybe. Seems to be the most “breast like”.
Have you tried a sippy cup? One with soft nipple, my youngest wouldn’t take a bottle but did take a cup.
I had the same problem and worked out the taste must of been different when heated up (also didn’t smell great either ) I sent the ready made formula to nursery as a back up incase she got upset and she drank the lot she wouldn’t drink the powder formula just the ready made one and fed from me at home as normal she is now 14 months and has a feed from me morning and before bed and that’s it, it gets much easier
7.5 months is old enough to start some baby cereal made with breast milk and some purées if you’re ok with that.
Other than that try different bottles. My youngest refused all but the Avent naturals because it’s the same shape as my nipple after she’s done nursing.
It took both my children a full day away from the smell of my breast milk to take a bottle. A baby will always eat when it’s staving. Keep at it it’s hard as a mum hearing ur baby upset but stick to ur decision and always use warm milk as breast milk is always warm. Good luck
Medela brand bottles. The nipple mimics the shame that a real nipple takes on during nursing.
Also, at that age they can drink water and juice and eat baby food and your sweet baby will make up the need for milk once you are back around. At 7.5 months there’s no reason you can’t nurse the baby, leave water juice and baby foods he enjoys and head out for a couple hours.
I’ve nursed all my kids for years and still worked etc to.
Try all kinds of bottles, and if he still wont take it just add the milk to some cereal/fruit/veggies while your gone that way he’s still getting the milk, an offer water
I used nipple shields during last week of nursing, so baby got used to the bottle like teat, then easier transition. My sister tried many different bottle types. In the end both our babies took best to Tommee Tippee bottles.
Me too 14 months in im losing my mind can only work 4 hour shifts plus driving time because i dont want her any more constipated than she is…she will take water from a sippy cup but nothing else in any bottle or cup ive tried tho i have not tried any of the brands listed so i will be looking into those options but not really wanting to get into bottle now at 14 months ugh im tired lol
I had the same problem with my daughter…I never figured out what to do. But I have seen they have those bottles that look similar to a breast to help others feed the baby… Maybe try something like that? Good luck!
My middle child did this. It was one of the most frustrating times of my life.
We ended up moving straight to a cup at 8 months and she did amazingly well!! No bottles, no pacifiers, no sippy cups, just right into an actual cup. I couldve cried with joy when we figured that outn
All 3 of my sisters kids were like that. She just never went out. She breastfed her youngest until she was 3. Went out like 3 times in the 3 years. Sometimes babies just won’t take a bottle. But I would suggest trying different brands of bottles if you haven’t yet. Otherwise baby food and water. I didn’t have that issue with my daughter. But she didn’t have much of a choice cuz I had to work. I’m due with #2 in a few months and I’m planning to breastfeed but also introduce a bottle early on. Some babies just hate bottle. Idk I never had the issue so I can’t speak from experience. I hope it all works out for you though!
My dr will ONLY take the evenflow breastfeeding bottle. The one with a wode nipple! You cam get them at target/ amazon. My daughter its EBF except when im at work.
My second was like that. We finally started perfecting a sippy cup so we could leave milk in it. By about 8 months I was finally able to leave her for a bit with milk in sippy plus she was eating other foods.
What type of bottle do you use? Tommy Tippy worked best for me and try the super slow flow nipples either size 0 or 1, be persistent and keep trying and hey maybe mix some formula see if it works
Try the comotomo bottle. Make sure the milk is warm and the nipple has a fast flow if he is an excited eater. My niece refused a bottle if it wasn’t warm enough.
nuk brand my daughter was the same way but i also introduced the bottle here and there just incase i ever needed time but she will not drink from any other bottle but they are at walmart or online
I had exactly this problem we tried every different type of bottle and nothing! Then we tried the Mam bottles and he took that straight away x
my boy is the same way. at first he wouldn’t take any bottle of stored BM but recently he has been drinking it just fine as long as its not heated up. he’ll drink it from a sippy cup at fridge temp!
My daughter never took a bottle or pacifier. Lost my milk at her 6th month. Tried every nipple on the market. She would gag as soon as you put it in her mouth. Went right to the sippy cup with no problems. Maybe he has a texture issue like she did.
My second son was like that! Our best bottle we found he’d take was Tommee Tippee sometimes were still a fight but he’d eventually give in and take it.
I feel your pain momma! Good luck
I had this issue too until I tried the tommee tippee bottles! She took to them right away.
My grandson never took a bottle, he absolutely refused, he went from breastfeeding to a sippy cup.
My second son was tongue tied and had to have the skin clipped under his tongue. After that he could take his bottle!
Both of my boys never took a bottle or pacifier, the second one I tried to start as soon as he was born but
I had the same problem my sin would refuse every bottle(to many to list) wouldn’t take a pacifier. He went straight from breast to a sippy cup.
I have three kids and none of them took a bottle but they took to a sippy cup or a regular cup.
my son couldn’t handle his time away .the second he went into his home he was peaceful.he did out grow it .
Try a cup instead. I had luck with the sippy cups with soft spouts that would drip milk when turned up or if they chewed on the spouts vs baby having to suck
I had the same problem and the only bottle that worked was the minbie
I can’t offer advice but I want to wish you luck
I have the same problem I’d love advice also
What about sippy cup
Start working on a cup instead of giving him a bottle
Train him to drink from the sippy cup…
.
My daughter wouldn’t take a bottle for anyone. Finally around 6 months when I had to put her in daycare she started taking it.
Then, the quarantine happened and she was just breastfeeding. When I went back to work 6 weeks later, she never took the bottle again.
It’s stressful, but I tried everything and have just accepted that it’s not happening lol
Try putting it in a sippy cup
I am in the exact same boat! She drinks water from a sippy cup, i have tried putting frozen breastmilk, fresh, in a bottle (several) even spoon feeding her. And other people as well. She wont take any of it! Dont be discouraged! When u go, baby will eat eventually when she is hungry enough. I havent gone back to work yet so we dont have that urgency but Just wanted you to know you arent alone!! I am sure you will get plenty of advice here.
Have you tried a soft spout sippy cup?
My husband couldn’t really get my breastfeed son to take a bottle when I went back to work full time when my son was 5 months old and lost weight because of it his Dr told us to try just giving him a sippy cup and it worked
Try a sippy cup with handles. Try spouts and straws. See which he will take. My breastfed baby preferred them over bottles.
My breastfed baby would only take Nuk simply natural bottles size 2 nipple!!
My youngest would only ever take one if I wasn’t home. A few times a week I’d take him to my moms before a meal and leave so she could try to get him used to it or I’d leave the house and have husband feed him. His dr said they know when momma is home so you have to be far enough away. A different room didn’t help us I had to leave lol. It took a few weeks but by the time I went back he ate fine, but still only for others.
Also, he was VERY hard to wean as well
If you’re not there and he gets hungry, she’ll take the bottle. Mine never would when I was around, but when I went back to work, she took the bottle.
Do a test run and leave the house for a bit. My son would not take a bottle unless he was 100% positive I was not there. The bottle also makes a difference, he would only use tommy tippe (prob spelled wrong)
Have someone else do it first.
To be honest my baby won’t too, so my husband had to drive the baby to my job just for it to get fed… then we supplemented with solids and cereal mixed with breastmilk
My newborn is going through the same thing and I just started back to work (she’s not quite five weeks old). She won’t take a bottle hardly, and won’t take a bottle with breast milk. All she wants is to nurse. It doesn’t seem to bother her to go sevenish hours with what little my husband can get her to drink, but I pump while I’m at work then as soon as I get home she nurses right away.
A cup and straw for that age🙂
My son was the same many moons ago, but was happy with a sippy cup, he would refuse a bottle every time!
Both of mine would never take any sort of bottle. I tried SO MANY. and they refused them all. I hope you find one. Good luck!!!
My son was the same way, he ended up going straight to a sippy cup.
Transition to a cup. We did. He nursed when I was there and used a cup when I wasn’t.
This happened to me too. We tried every bottle out there and he still wouldn’t take but maybe an ounce while I was at work. He ended up not eating all day and nursed like crazy when I got home. He seemed cool with it so we just rolled with it. He stayed fat and chunky so there was no real reason to worry. I still pumped at work but just donated all my milk to the local milk bank- over 500 oz.
Have you tried Avent, with the natural teat? My boy when he was a baby took to those straight away. Good luck
My sons were the same. We tried every bottle and every nipple. I don’t know if they finally gave in or what but the Dr Browns was the only bottles they would take.

Just keep offering it. And have dad offer it while you’re not around. (He might cave easier) It took a while for my guy to figure it out. He likes firmer nipples, not overly soft ones, so trying different models may help?
