My daughter coughs a lot at night time: Advice?

My little girl won’t stop coughing at night … she coughs herself almost sick. Been to the Drs and they’ve said there’s nothing wrong. I can’t just ignore it.

Try the vapor rub on her feet with socks. I know it sounds weird but I did it to my daughter the other night and didnt hear her cough once. :woman_shrugging:

Coughing at night is a sign of asthma

Possibly acid reflux. My daughter does the same

Vick’s on the bottom of her feet, with socks on.

That’s a common sign of childhood asthmz

I would get a second opinion. Post nasal drip, asthma, allergies… could be a lot of things. I love essential oils for diffusing in the air. Doterra has one called breathe that smells like Vick’s. Does wonders for us.

Keep her head elevated slightly, a cool mist humidifier next to her bed, Vicks Vapor rub on her feet with socks, a small teaspoon of honey(depending on age). I’ve been dealing with the same thing for over 4 months and it’s only at night

My son had this forever nighttime cough, he uses an inhaler now and no more cough.

Contact an allergist.

She may need a humidifier in her room. I used to have coughing spells at night too and this helps me a lot.

Allergies or calming down activating asthma. I have caughing asthma my daughter has sinus drainage allergies caught from drainage.

My son has severe asthma, we have to have allergy covers on his mattress and pillow plus have a fan running to push air for him. If the fan isn’t on he struggles for air because gas heat makes the house dry. You can also put a cool mist humidifier in the bedroom. Also try elevating the head of the bed just a little. It could also be reflux if they’re laying flat

Get a humidifier!! Game changer

get a humidifier for your home the air is to dry

Get a second opinion!!! You know your daughter best. My doctor missed something crucial with my daughter and kept saying it was nothing. Had I not gotten a second opinion we would be in a very bad spot right now. Trust your gut not the doctor.

Could be undiagnosed asthma. Ask your pediatrician for a referral to an allergist/asthma dr

Cool mist him and get her checked for asthma

I was going to say it could be allergies I would first try that humidifier and see if you can get her put on Some meds for allergies if that doesn’t help and if it continues don’t rule out gastric reflux because mine gets worse at night

Is she old enough that she can have a cup of water to sip on? I get an itchy dry throat at night. Wakes me up, so i take a sip of water and it’s gone

Try humidifier may be dry air

Vapor rub on chest and back.

I had aweful trouble with my daughter it was a combo of reflux and being allergic to dustmite. Cleared her room out got her an allergy friendly pillow and put her on reflux meds she is 100% better it did take months to figure out.

Sounds like cough variant asthma took forever for my son to be diagnosed even though we have a family history of it

do you have mold or dust anywhere? I mean an excessive amount?

Clean bed with no pets , clean room no carpet, wash everything, stuffed animals toys pillows etc.

Acid reflux or post nasal drip. Kids who have narrowed sinuses have it much worse. I would ask to try a reflux medication.

Humidifier, inhaler, or allergies, nebulizer, or liq. Steriod(can’t think of the name).
My son is the same way, his cough gets worse at night. & one of those will always works. Just have to go threw them all to figure out which one it is.

Could be asthma. Common asthma symptom in kids that goes undiagnosed is night time coughing.

For the cough, put a bunch of Vick’s vapor rub on her feet and put socks on her right before bed. It works for coughs in my house.

Keep going to Dr. If doesnt quit.

Humidifier and put vics on her chest, feet, back and neck. If the cough still is there next week make another appointment . Demand they figure it out.

My daughter has the same problem, every single winter! She has allergies, which is the root of the problem. Any regular cough medicine would never touch the cough. Our pediatrician recommended kids delsym, and it worked wonders for her! Good luck to you

If any smoke if in the house or even on your clothes could do that

Cool mist humidifier. Lots of fluids, and an extra pillow under head at night to prop up.

My daughter did this. It was allergies. We now give her liquid Zyrtec per her allergist and no more coughing!

Maybe she is allergic to something in her room!

It could be An allergy to bedbugs or dust mites more so dust mites than anything else in that case you can try to get a mattress cover that zips and protects from dust mites and do the same thing with your pillowcases also a allergy medication that she takes once a day would be helpful but may want to check for other causes that could be underlying from that cough nightly does she have sinus issues congestion etc. things that could be draining at night time and causing coughing or something more serious that would need to be looked into

My daughter does the same thing. I’ve taken her to the doctor a dozen times for it. Sometimes it seems like it goes away and then we’ll have 3 solid months of coughing. I think it’s allergy related. I put an air purifier in her room and it helps a bit. I also stopped letting our dog go in her room at all. We’ve done allergy testing and tried a ton of allergy meds. It’s a lot better now than it was a year ago… it’s almost likes she’s growing out of it :woman_shrugging:

Went through the same thing with my 7.5 year old for months. Multiple doctor visits showed nothing wrong. Had a blood draw to test for allergies and discovered she has a mild tree allergy. Once it started getting cold the coughing stopped. I don’t know how old your little is but Singulair helped my daughter a bit.

My daughter did that. Got another doctors opinion and it turned out she had asthma.

Acid reflux probably I cough alot because of it and worse at night sleeping

How old is she? Mine did it from 2-7. Eventually grew out of it. Good luck!

My daughter has seasonal allergies that get really bad at times. She gets really congested and the postnasal drip makes her cough constantly. Try a humidfier. I also give her honey and lemon before bedtime to help coat her throat. I also use Doterra essential oils Breathe that helps open her up and Scentsy makes a great scent called Just Breathe that helps too. I set it on a timer so it doesnt stay on all night but it helps her breathe a tad essier. Good luck.

I have a constant cough at night due to reflux.

Ger your vents and ducts professionally cleaned

Maybe acid reflux? :woman_shrugging:t3:

I had to take my kid to the doc he takes medicine for a runny nose or an inhaler for wheezing

Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier and an elevated mattress does the trick for us.

My kid was coughing too w no other cold symptoms. Gave her allergy pills .

Maybe have duct work checked to see if it needs cleaning.

My cousin little girl done that and she finally found a dr. That knew what was wrong. The had to put her to sleep and do what they call a deep suction. She had it done and it’s been years and she still doing great no coughing at night.

We experienced the same. For 16 months we were told nothing wrong. Eventually discovered obstructive sleep apnea. Had tonsils removed and never had a problem again. Hope that helps

If she is wheezing as well, she could have asthma. Also would help if you have a humidifier going while she is sleeping.

She may have allergies just a question but do you smoke cigarettes and if you do. Do you smoke inside bc it might trigger it

Ear nose and throat Dr. Could be allergies and Ear drainage

Definitely try a humidifier… I had same experience with my son… it did the trick!

Have the child’s airway checked.

My son coughed all the time anytime of day our dr said it was nothing. Finally we went to an ENT and he has laryngomalacia so was aspirating and would cough to get it out. Lots of tests. Always trust your gut.

Try rubbing vicks vapor rub on her feet and then putting socks on. I do that to my son everytime he gets a cold and has a cough with it and it works.

Asthma! My daughter did the same. E.R. always wrote it off as a cold. Her doctor started her on an inhaler and it stopped!

Vicks on the feet, cover with socks. No joke

My daughter had coughing asthma. She took Singulair and had an inhaler for really bad nights. It ended when we moved to a different state when she was in 5th grade.

If she is older than 1year, give her ginger tea with honey… 2-3 times a day… boil ginger in water pour it in a cup and add honey… best cough remedy…

You should have them check to see if she has asthma

Put some Vicks on her feet and chest at bedtime to help with the coughing. Get her a nebulizer and albuterol for it. I have severe asthma, and that helps me!

Could it b acid reflux?

Does she cough in every room she sleeps in? Could be mold or dust. Put bleach in window seals.

Have Dr check for RSV…Maybe change pediatricians.

Humidifier in the room & vicks on feet & cover with socks. My granddaughter gets like this. Could be her room is to dry.

My son is the exact same way. Turns out he has horrible sinuses/allergies. His doctor has him on 3 different ones sadly so hopefully not as bad for your daughter. He is on Flonase, Zyrtec, and Singulair.

My husband coughs alot at night because of his acid reflux! If he sleeps propped up in a half sitting position it helps keep the acid down …

Try a cold air vaporizer in her room

Take to dr. Could be asthma…bronchitis…or even acid reflux.

I tend to cough alot if the house is too warm. Heat Causes the air to be much dryer & its worse at night. Try a cold air humidifier if you haven’t already & its best to turn down the heat for bedtime. Good luck

When I was a kid I always had a bad cough after I would have even the slightest cold. I have a lot of seasonal allergies even now and I have a cough that’s been a little on going because I get stuffy enough for my nose to be stuffy and then I get the post nasal drip and I’m done :weary::weary::weary::weary::weary::sneezing_face: I would suggest allergy testing and then possibly do some immunotherapy if they are bad enough. I hope she feels better soon!

Irma Silva McDevitt. Asthma?

Coughing at night sounds like she may need to have her head elevated, because it could be drainage. I’m not a doctor, so I can’t say what could be wrong with her, but just a suggestion.

I give my kids normal saline through the nebuliser at night when they get like this.
Warm Honey and lemon drinks
Gargle salt water
Drink warm water
Put a blanket or two under the head of her bed so she’s not lying flat.
Google - there’s a lot of things you can do that won’t cost anything that can help.

Do you sleep with ceiling fan on. If so quit. I did and I don’t cough anymore and breath better. A friend said the same at her house

Raise her head up. My daughter was around 1
when she had this issue and the doctor told up to put a pillow under the fitted sheet to elevate her head.

Put an onion in the room with her cough will be gone within half an hour.

I had this exact same problem with my son. Turned out it was his tonsils, they were extremely enlarged. He ended up having them removed, along with his adenoids and also got tubes in his ears! Haven’t had a single problem since!

Take your child to a allergist

Allergies will do that. Drainage will choke them plus cause coughing. Try children’s Mucinex or child allergy med. to dry up the drainage.

Vicks on the bottom of feet at night with socks on

My daughter has been having this issue for the past 3 months. Finally managed to get a dr to listen to me, and they think she may have Asthma. She has to go for lung testing.

Humidifiers work great.

Maybe talk to her dr about breathing treatments
