My daughter has a milk allergy and we are waiting on a GI: Advice?

My daughter almost two months old she has a cows milk allergy, so I had to stop breastfeeding, and she is still pooping blood and has a lot of mucus in her poop we are waiting to see a GI about it they’ve already done Xrays and a test to see if she had an infection, but everything came back normal I was just wondering if any other moms had a similar experience or may know what’s going on!

How does a cows milk allergy have anything to do with your breast milk? Can’t you just stay away from dairy while nursing?

Why would you have to stop breastfeeding for a cow’s milk allergy? Just don’t consume dairy.

Both my children were allergic to milk. I had to change them to soya milk and make sure that that the food that they ate where milk free. They had to see a dietician who gave me a list of what to feed them. My son was a year old and my daughter was around 7 months old. Please see what your doctor advises because my children are grown up now and they are absolutely fine with dairy products. Your doctor may know a formula that is more suitable and also you may be able to get It on prescription.

Both my kids had to be on soy formula. Might be an option to explore once you speak to the pediatrician.

If your breastfeeding you need to take out everything and start with one type of food. How do you know ifs cows milk have you seen an neonatal allergist? They wont test usually till 2 yrs old.

Mucus is ok in some cases. A pediatric GI doc should be able to assist. Try different formulas for at least 3 weeks. My Goddaughter had horrible reflux

We had to put my baby on Nutramigen.

What does cows milk have to do with breastfeeding I’m confused.

When I had my babies two of my children Especially my son experience the same thing. He was pooping pure blood and mucus. And screaming in pain. I went to a GI specialist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital Rhode Island. At 2 weeks old they had to do a colonoscopy on him the answer we got was he had a milk protein allergy. even if we tried using soy formulas they still had the milk protein in it. I had to get a special formula based on amino acids. I also was unable to breastfeed anymore.

I had a severe allergy to dairy. My mom was able to continue breast feeding, she just had to cut dairy out of her diet. She did have to use formula for a few weeks untill it was all out of her system.

As a mom that has a baby with severe food allergies, colic and silent reflux. There is a few key components here. Babies that have a milk allergy are at higher risk of a soy allergy and other protein allergies (diary, soy, wheat, eggs, etc) unless you have had a baby with these issues you can’t fathom the helplessness you feel when your baby is screaming, riving in pain and there is visual blood in there stool/vomit. When your in the midst of this, you don’t always have time for your body to process the proteins out. It can take up to 4 weeks.

I highly recommend asking your pediatrician for an amino acid based formula (neocate or elecare) to heal your babies tummy first and if you want to go back to breastfeed you have time to adjust your diet without hurting your little one.

Anyone struggling with this can always message me to talk or I can point then to a few mom groups that deal with this same thing everyday

My daughter was born around 30 years ago. She couldn’t tolerate any formula with milk or soy in it. She had blood in her diaper. Her abdomen would get stiff, and she would scream in pain She was put on a very restrictive formula called Pregestimal. By the time she was a year old she was able to tolerate all dairy products and hadno dietary restrictions.

My son had the same thing happen. His gi doc started him on elecare jr… solved all his problems… best milk ever

My daughter needed goat milk from about a month old. It was amazing and she thrives on it

My son ended up being lactose intolerant x

Nutramagin milk is what they put my child on for that

Cows milk and breast milk are two different types of milk. Is probably something you eating

The only thing that took away my child from pooping blood because he had a dairy allergy was to get on the formula elecare It was expensive but it was the only thing that worked

I completely cut dairy out of my diet for my son (he’s 15 weeks), and so far it’s working

My daughter used nutramigen…expensive, but worked.

I would keep nursing and watch what I eat. Your milk is the best thing for sensitive stomaches.

We had to do a prescription formula. It’s the only thing that worked. Nothing over the counter worked

Cut dairy out of your and continue breastfeeding

You can use goats milk… Or take calcium pills instead of drinking milk!

Special formula is extra expensive

My son has a cows milk allergy and is on nutramigen formula. Super expensive but it works. And he can drink goats milk too.

Yep my girl has milk and soy protein allergy, so had to stop as well… She had severe infantile eczema as well. Plus many other allergies. I couldn’t just change my diet as it was too much of a severe and strict diet. She had to have neocate formula

Nutramigen worked for my 3.

My son used nutramigen for a bit then switched to elecare because the nutramigen was still messing with him, he loves the elecare (burps really stink though) and he has just been out on elecare jr. They have different flavors and wic covers it. (Insurance covered his formula)

Definitely sounds like a cows milk allergy. You can either keep breastfeeding and cut dairy completely out of your diet, or switch to a special formula. My second daughter was sensitive to cows milk and used Enfamil Nutramigen. It made a huge difference.

My daughter has the same issue and we used soy formula then when she turned 1 used soy milk

My son had the same issue and started having stools with blood and mucus before we even left the hospital. He changed to soy, which helped, but then he started having alot of reflux. We eventually ended up on alimentum and he did great. Never had to see GI. He is 4 now and has outgrown all of his issues and dairy intolerance.

There are soy options available on the market.

Cow’s milk is not the same as human.
My daughter had a very similar allergy. I didn’t have to stop breast feeding her tho, I just had to change my diet to help her out.

my daughter was same. she had a allergy to the whey element… we were under a dietician at hosp…we used lactose free sma… she grew out of it by 6 months and is fine now x

I used soy for my baby. Worked like a charm

You can cut the dairy from your diet all together or stop breast feeding and put her on nutramigen both my youngest has cows milk allergies I stopped breastfeeding with my daughter and she was put on nutramigen and with my son I bottle fed from the beginning was on enfamil a+ switched to nutramigen but it didn’t work for him and was put on puramino it’s super super expensive but I was able to get it covered by drug benefits it’s about 115.00 per powered can

My last son was allergic to soy & dairy… I had to exclusively BF and cut it all out of my diet

If you have to switch to formula…if the doctor writes a prescription for the “special formula” and you have insurance it should pay for most of the expense

My son has that and was put on elecare formula

My son has a milk protein allergy and whilst I’m breastfeeding I’m strictly dairy free, and under that bracket means I cannot also have soy: because it has milk protein.
A paediatrician or hospital can provide a Thorough list of formula that adheres to a milk protein allergy, or list of foods to avoid for mother, to adhere to child’s milk protein allergy

My son has a cows milk allergy/sensitivity and also had extreme acid reflux as well until about 3 to 4 months old that he was taking baby zantac for to help him from spitting up everything he took in.

He was in a LOT of pain and was extremely colicky for the first months. Neither one of us slept more than an hour at a time for MONTHS.

We started on ready to use similac alimentum formula at about 6 to 7 weeks when he started getting bloody, mucousy stools (it’s EXPENSIVE to buy by the quart but the air introduced when shaking from powder would cause him really bad gas pains so we just dealt with the added cost.) and gave him simethicone gas drops with every feeding and in between if his tummy was feeling tight to help his digestion.

Lots of babies outgrow this sensitivity so we didn’t want to completely switch to an elemental formula like neocate. Alimentum is a hypoallergenic super hydrolyzed formula. It doesn’t remove the protein but it does partially break it down to make it easier to digest.

Lots of babies who have a dairy protein intolerance also struggle with digesting soy, so I would recommend asking your pediatrician what they think before making any changes to his diet (or yours if you’re going to continue to breastfeed).

My son is now two and still has some dairy issues- he can have small amounts of cheese or yogurt but doesn’t tolerate cows milk still. He drinks Ripple milk which is a pea based milk alternative that’s a very close substitute in terms of the fat and protein content he would be getting from cow’s milk.

My daughter had a milk protein allergy so I quit breastfeeding her and the GI specialist put her on Elecare formula. It worked great! I could’ve breastfed if I would’ve eliminated all dairy from my diet but it was better for me to put her on formula

Breast milk doesn’t have lactose in it naturally. Stop taking in dairy and you will be fine.

I cut all dairy out and breastfeed

My son had the exact same issue. We would feed him and he would literally spit up over and over until it was time to eat again. After they hospitalized him twice with no change to his diet, I didn’t know what to do to keep him from losing weight and the pediatrician happen to see him basically vomit and after I explained that I fed him two hours before hand, his formula was changed on the spot and that was the end of it

My sis in laws son had a milk allergy when he was a baby & he wasn’t able to drink cows milk, but was able to drink goat milk. It was the only dairy he could drink after she was done breast feeding him.

Keep breastfeeding just cut cows milk from your diet. An baby might have other problems going on other than the allergy

I cut dairy out from my diet, and breastfed my son until 3 he was years old.

Nutramigen worked great for my daughter. She was only a newborn and couldn’t keep anything down. Talked to her doctor and they suggested nutramigen and it worked great and she eventually grew out of it when she turned one and was able to start drinking regular milk.

My daughter had the same allergy when she was born and same symptoms. Within 24 hours of switching her to Neocate, all issues cleared up. She outgrew her milk allergy early on. Good luck!

My daughter had a milk protein allergy. We had to use nutramigen formula. It’s already broken down and easy digestion. They also had her on an antacid for a while. At a year old we tried goats milk but within a short time she threw that up too. We tried rice milk and just went to water. We made up the calcium in healthy foods. She eventually grew out of it and has no problems with milk and she’s 13

When my daughter was born she kept throwing everything up so we thought she had a milk allergy, so we hand made a formula for her out of coconut water and the meat from the coconut, plus powdered vitamins and minerals. She loved it! We would throw in a couple dates to sweeten it up.

We went through this. You can still breastfeed you just have to cut out dairy yourself as well. They may also do a scope. My daughter had developed a cyst from the milk. It goes away with antacids.

My daughter had a severe reaction. We changed to a gentle soy formula and she has done great. She drinks soy and lactose free milks as a teenager now

All 4 of my children had this. Including the blood in stool. 3 of my kids did great on similac alimentum ready to feed. My one son required neocate as his blood was severe.

Same thing happened to my son around the same age. Met with pediatric Gastro and it turned out he had a milk protein allergy. He needed to go on a prescription formula, Neocate. He grew out of it after a year. Good luck

My 5 year old was getting sick from formula, had to only breastfeed him. Found out he was lactose intolerant. And till this day he can’t have anything with lactose or he’ll throw up or get bad diarrhea.

My son had a similar issue - we used a goat milk formula and it worked great! You can find it on Amazon, in Kroger, etc. The brand name was Meyenberg. Good luck!

I cut dairy, eggs, and gluten from my diet because my daughter was allergic. I nursed her for 2.5 years. You got this mama. :muscle:

My daughter had to cut out all dairy for herself cuz it was causing same issues with my grand baby. No dairy for mom & she still breastfeeds. My grand daughters fine now.

My youngest now 4 had this. My husband is lactose intolerant so it didn’t surprise me. I went on a lactose free diet. It’s amazing how much food has it in it. Occasionally I did slip up and you could tell, immediately she would have blood in her stool. She did grow out of it once she was totally weaned. She eats all sort of dairy things now with no ill effects.

I was diagnosed at two months of having a lactose allergy. My mother had me on soy milk and was told to avoid anything with milk. As I grew still had issues with milk. So with this day and age try a soy based milk to feed your child. It might help.

I had the same issue with one of my sons when he was a baby. Found blood in his diaper (not constipated) and immediately switched him to soy formula. He’s 5 now and is allergic to the protein in dairy. He drinks almond milk and cooking is harder at times lol. He gets really bad cramps and diarrhea if he gets into milk products.

My daughter had a milk protein allergy and acid reflux. She was formula fed so we gave her Enfamil prosobee and Prevacid. It was a miracle! When it was time to switch from formula, we have her Silk. Luckily, she grew out of it when she was about 3 years old.

My daughter had a milk allergy. She was taken off of everything that had a milk ingredient in it. Trust me when I say just about everything has a milk ingredient in it. Made my own chicken broth for things like mashed potatoes. Used soy and coconut milk for a lot of things. The health food store was a God send. After two years we introduced her back to milk slowly. She is now 17 and hasn’t had any problems.

We did nutramigen. Its hypoallergenic. My son was a total different baby after the first feeding

My middle daughter had to be on nutramigen and my son had to be on alimentum. They both had milk and soy protein allergies, thankfully They eventually grew out of it. But watch baby foods also. I had to learn to read labels and know every reference to milk. Casein is a major one i found in lots of products. Milk allergies are horrible. And don’t let anyone say its just lactose intolerance. Its totally different.

My daughter was one months when I stared seeing blood and mucus in her poop. Doctor change her formula like 5 different time. Not one work for her. She went from having a cow milk allergy to being lactose intolerant. Now she 5 and after a colonoscopy GI said she have Crohn’s disease. She’s drinking neocate junior now mix with almond milk and doing a lot better.

Yes, my son when he was that age… ended up with food allergies, milk, nuts and seafood. Go see a allergist. In the mean time try goat milk or soy.
My son is 18 now and grew out of the milk allergy but still has the peanut and seafood.

My 7 month old is on Similac Alimentum due to lactose intolerance and other allergies. Has helped immensely. All three of my kids have the same issues because I’m lactose intolerant, have IBS and a few other medical issues

Both my sons had this problem. I switched to a dairy free diet and continued to breastfeed and they both did great.

I wouldn’t stop breastfeeding just cut out diary. Also nutrimagen formula has milk in it and my daughter was on it in the nicu and still having issues. If your baby has a true milk allergy I would not suggest any formula with diary at all.

At 4 months old my daughter was diagnosed with a milk allergy. I cut milk out - extremely hard on me - but I continued to breastfeed for another couple months before she was put on Alimentum. She did great after that and at a year old she grew out of it. She can drink milk now and has zero issues.

Switch to an amino acid based formula. Immediately. Breastfeeding is better then feeding her formula if you cant afford to purchase one. I used elecare and puramino. I liked the elecare. But they are all so incredibly expensive without insurance or WIC to cover.

Yep exactly what happen to us with both kids. My girl was on Nutragminen and did great. My boy was a much harder process. The formula she had make the blood in the stool worse. Soy worked great but made him constipated. He was in the 1 percentile for weight at two months. After lots of doctors visits. Changes in my diet to try to continue breast feeding and other formula we finally tried pure animo (sp?) formula. We could only get it on Amazon and it was expensive. Eventually insurance paid for it. After a few bottles he was like a new kid. Good luck.

My son had gerd, he developed also bloody diahrea. We seen a GI specialist they put him on medication for the gerd and said it seemed the regular formula caused the bloody diahrea. He was put on nutramigen by Enfamil. It cleared up the bloody mucus stool and helped with acid reflux. Hope your lil one feels better

My nephew did. Said he had ulcers from the milk because he was so allergic. So like little ulcer near the recrum. He had to be out on Nutramagin fomular. That worked wonders. Of course GI first.

Actually she’s allergic to cow’s milk not breast milk. My daughter had lactose intolerance too(cow’s milk allergy) but I only stole giving it to her and she was fine.

It could be she’s still getting milk some how or has an additional allergy to corn or something that is in everything even the dairy free milk … you can talk to the hospital sometimes they have breast milk donors that are completely dairy free … sorry hang in there

I was on a strict no dairy no soy diet with my son for 18months because he was allergic to every formula we tried.

Milk protein can stay in their system for up to two weeks (yours too if you’re breastfeeding) I cut out all dairy from my diet and continue to breastfeed, after that we did nutramigen and now goats milk. There is dairy in everything, read labels closely. There is no quick fix for this. Good luck.

My daughter had this, I eliminated any dairy from my diet and was able to continue breastfeeding, I did also use formula and for that we used soy, once she turned 1 and we no longer used formula we did almond milk… shes 6 now and does fine. She can eat dairy just not cows milk

They did biopsies on my daughters stomach and found out she was allergic to milk and soy. She had to have prescription formula.

Our daughter was so allergic that it would burn her mouth all the way through her system. She was blistered all the way through from dairy Our daughter was on soybean formula. We used cool whip for ice cream as she grew older and non dairy coffee creamer for milk on cereal. She still does it until today 30 years old.

My daughter at 8 days old was put on similac alimentum (if the doctors say to try it just an FYI if they write a prescription insurance will cover it or at least a portion it’s expensive) she had a lot of dairy issues even once she was off of formula they told me after seeing an allegorist that she wasn’t allergic to dairy it must have been just hard on her belly but with time and slow introduction she now can have dairy I just limit her. But I wouldn’t do/try anything until the doctor gives you the go… good luck it’s hard

My granddaughter had go on almond milk it was a mess she outgrew hers at about 3 i went internet and got list of all things that have milk base in it make sure tell pharmacy because some meds have a milk base

Nutramigen or Alimentum. Both worked wonders for my girls. They were both intolerant but outgrew it thankfully!

Ask you pediatrician about nutramigin? Sp. my youngest son did well with it. Good luck and god bless

None of my kids could tolerate regular formula. They had to have soy. The youngest is almost 21 and still cant digest cow milk. He had to have goat milk because the fat is smaller. Makes it easier to digest! Hope you get answers soon!!!

Yes. Mine was discovered the night before we were being discharged from the NICU. I was pumping and nursing for about 2 1/2 weeks and he started having bloody poops. He was prescribed a purple can of Similac. (Forgot the name) Now he is about to be 2 and he drinks soy milk.

They make a medical formula called neocate and you can buy it at the pharmacy. It’s expensive but when my son had this problem it was the only thing that helped. But you can try any soy based formula and it should help the problem pretty quickly.

We had to switch formula alot with my son because he had the same issues we finally tried nutramigen and it was the only thing that worked. After he was 1 he was on goat milk but at about 3 he outgrew it all.

My daughter had a milk allergy doc just out her on a soya based feed she grew out of it about 5 year old she’s 35 now and now problems

My son had a cow’s me lk allergy and after we put him on Nutramigen formula he was fine. He switched to Almond Milk and by 4 years old he had outgrown it and he loves cow’s milk now (he’s 8 now)
