My son keeps getting sick at daycare: Advice?

My almost-three-year-old son goes to daycare on a Monday, just one day a week, just for the socialization side of it. Every week he is catching a cold/snotty nose. Then I have to keep him home the next week until his colds are resolved. The following Monday, I send him, and he wakes up on the Tuesday or Wednesday snotty again! It’s a draining cycle. I’m wondering what I can do to boost his immunity? He is a fussy eater and doesn’t eat many vegetables. He does eat fruit. I’ve started him on an immunity booster powder that the pharmacist recommended. Is there anything else you Mumma’s swear by to avoid your child getting sick every week at daycare?? Help

Sounds like he hasn’t had enough exposure to other kids and their germs. He could also be allergic to something that is at daycare that you don’t have in your home. Essential oils are amazing at helping this kind of stuff.

Id get him into vegetables now and maybe make dr visit have blood work done see what hes truly lacking.

You should not have to keep him home unless he has a fever. Best way to build up immunity is to allow him to be around those things. A runny nose for kids that age is pretty common. Just let it happen.

1 day a week isn’t enough exposure to germs etc! His body isn’t used to it! I used to work in a daycare for years and, my immune system couldn’t handle the germs etc! My advice is let him go full time or not at all! One day a week isn’t enough socializing with other kids either way. You have to pick your battles

Vitamins and smoothies

He’s not at daycare long enough to become accustomed to the bugs in that environment. If you send him 3 or 4 days a week, he will acclimate and we’ll stop getting sick so often.

Is it a cold or allergies? He might be allergic to something there

Could be allergy to something there.

Vitamins is all u can do right now and Vitamins will give him appetite ul see a change get him the chewable kind my 2 yr n 3yr old had same problem but they fine now

Change daycares. Some are worse than others

Vitamins!!

My son was the same - he’d go to nursery and within 2 days would start coughing. I took him to the doctor two or three times and just got told he was building his immune system. I asked how as he was so exhausted from coughing all night he had no energy to build an immune system.

He’s now six and has been having chewy vitamins for about a year. He goes to school daily and hasn’t had a cold or cough since starting them!

Elderberry & echinacea are good for the immune system

Some people send kids sick that he may be catching it at daycare

Are they using chemicals or essential oils in that daycare? You CAN be allergic to essential oils - certain oils can cause aggravation of allergies and trigger some illnesses

Sadly I see this Everytime with all of mine. It’s a melting pot and kids spread stuff quick

I have been told that if a child will not eat certain vegetables to give them a fruit of the same color, i.e. carrots/ orange or broccoli/kiwi. Still more sugar but its natural sugar anyway… :woman_shrugging:

Maybe its allergies try a daily allergy med

My little girl is the same, even the slightest sniffle and she caught it 10 fold. Doc said it’s worse this year because kids haven’t been around people as much.
Daily vitamins is all he recommended x

We give our kids a multivitamin with a probiotic and a black elderberry gummy every day.

Once he goes a while he will build up some immunity. But vitamins are good and his school should have hand wash as a part their routine

Good old Fashioned Scott’s emulsion

Honestly if he’s never been in daycare before then he will get sick a lot at first because his immune systems getting used to all these new germs. It will get better

If it happens every time it is more than likely an allergy to something.

Orange juice, vitamins

It could be allergies.
Try a daily allergy Med, daily multivitamin, and immune system booster vitamins.

The c+ and D3 of these

A chewable that has whole food base. Might have to try a couple of different ones. So many of the chewable vits are loaded with sugar, so read labels…viruses , bacteria, and fungus all love sugars…

A multi and elderberry

Try an immunity vitamin and probiotic. It will keep his system clearer and give him the boost he needs

Daycares are germ magnets :magnet: So are schools kids constantly bring things home . My friends son started daycare last year. Constantly sick now .

It’s just the nature of the beast. All kids get tons of colds when they are around other kids. Yes, he should eat right and take vitamins but that won’t prevent him from getting colds all the time.

Even if he won’t eat vegetables, try adding more and different kinds of fruits to his diet and a multivitamin. I had a nutritionist tell me it’s good to get both veggies and fruits, but don’t feel like I’m doing a disservice to myself if I only eat fruits in one day. They still count towards your nutrients and vitamins and a multivitamin helps fill in the gaps for the things that you are a little lacking on.
Also, maybe try a couple weeks of an allergy medication to see if that changes anything.

May have allergies it could be mold in the building I went through that same thing

He needs to go to the day care more then once a week to build up his immune system.

Probiotics and vitamins but its normal with daycare/school and they need to get sick to build their immune system up unfortunately

I live in a state that gets very little straight sunlight unfortunately (Ohio). I found out I was vitamin d almost a year ago and I’ve been taking vitamin d ever since. I’ve seen such a drastic change in my seasonal allergies alone plus, when I do get sick, i get over it quickly and knock on wood, I have barely been sick since 2019.
I’d have him take regular vitamins, elderberry, vitamin d and vitamin k…

I am wondering if he has an allergy to something at the school, just seems strange that he gets sick the next day every time he goes there.

On top of healthy eating and a variety of food in his diet. Give him more exposure to germs on a regular basis. Sounds silly but the more he goes to daycare, parks, playdates, social settings etc… the more he will build immunity against these illnesses and each time he gets sick a new immunity is built up.

Still send him mine go to school with a cold something you can’t prevent

Maybe sending him more often to get his immunity up.

Sounds like allergies. And give him a child probiotic and give him allergy meds before taking him next time n see if that makes a difference. But kids carry germs n kids will get sick

N the reason he gets the runny snotty nose is cause he isn’t around germs enough

It could be allergies too.

I bought enof, it’s pricey but it’s just powder made from real vegetables that are freeze dried you can mix into whatever they eat

expose him to more germs. body has to get used to it to be able to defend it. make sure he’s eating tons of fruit and vegetables

Elderberry syrup daily, a daily probiotic and local honey

Would he drink smoothies ?
Maybe make some veg and fruit ones if he will
If not I’d say vitamins X

Immune C or elderberry

I’d say allergies. Not likely to wake up the next day every week with a cold.

I’d have him checked for allergies. My son did that at his babysitters. Found out he was allergic to a cleaning product she used in her house

My kids started taking a vitamin c gummy every day with their daily vitamins and hardly ever get sick anymore!

This happened to my daughter when she started daycare. Seemed like one thing after an other for a good 6 months. After that she hasn’t been sick in about 3 years.

I had the same issue I sent my daughter 2 daycare 2x a week when I was working part time and she was always coughing and sick for three months until I switched her to another daycare now she can go full time with no issues.

It’s probably allergies, he’s allergic to something in the center.

 he builds immunity by being around the germs
If you keep trying to keep him in a bubble he’ll continue to keep getting sick (very easily)

I would say there’s something at the daycare bothering him. Dust, mold, whatever brand paint/glue they use, could be anything. I would see an allergist.

Possible allergies but probably his immune system building up yogurt, fruit’s, water that’ll help it stay tip top.
( I’d get strep every 3 weeks in 4th grade started doing this in 5th never again)

Allergies? If the snot is clear it’s not sick. Green means infection.

Could be the environment air change maybe just sinuses

Check their environment. He may have allergies. Different trees/plants outside. When I’m at home I’m fine but sleeping at my boyfriends and I wake up with my eyes stuck shut. His fan makes my eyes water all night. He also has a cat that I’m allergic to.

It sucks but it comes with the territory, especially since he’s not there that often…my son went to all day prek for 3 & 4 yr old, he was dick ALL the time…but by the time kindergarten rolled around he never got sick, and STILL rarely gets sick…kids together like that are walking talking petri dishes

Put some triple antibiotics oint on a q-tip and rub in his nose every time he goes.

Have him attend more often. Every week his body is “getting used” to the new germs. Not necessarily bad germs but new germs. He needs to go moe often. Also, he isn’t gaining much socialization skills by going just one day a week. It’s just more hard in him than anything. It’s like readjusting every week.

Sounds more like allergies. Maybe he’s allergic to something there or he’s around others who have cigarette smoke on them.

Vit c gummies . They are a life saver for fussy eaters .

It’s possibly a mold allergy in the daycare building

Are you sure its a cold and not allergies? Have you had him to an ENT?

That’s super common! It’s his immune system adapting to the other kids

His immune system sounds like it’s down!

Wait until they start school :woman_facepalming:t2:

Unfortunately kids share germs. Pick up some vitamin c gummies
Good luck

Honestly just sounds like allergies

If it is just a snotty nose it could be he’s allergic to something there or another child could have an animal he’s allergic too …

That’s normal he would probably benefit from going more kids pick up this sort of stuff all they time the just become used to it and their body gets better at dealing with it. Builds up the immune system. Why can’t you send him with a snotty nose?

No way child should be sick every week…could be allergies…
Check with daycare to find out how many times a day they wash there hands…
Child’s chewable vitamin… depends on what is in powder…do not give both without checking with a pharmacist…you can overdose your child on to many vitamins…
Try a smoothie with veggies…or V8

Fish oil on the regular

Sounds like allergies

My son got sick all the time when he was in kindergarten. The doctors said it was normal and just to send him sick as long as he doesn’t have a fever or throwing up which I thought was dumb. Cause your are going to give others your illness and probably pick up another one when you are sick. Then this past year he was in remote learning cause of covid. Not sure how this year will go, with the masks and extra precautions maybe he wont be sick as much but if he is I’m sure he will have to stay out for a week or two each time till he’s better which I’m sure will work great.

Sounds like my mans grandsons daycare. He’s been sick every week with a cold. His daycare been closed since Wednesday since staff members are now sick

How long has he been going? First year he will get sick alot, should build immunity by 2nd year, lots of vit c so oranges are great, lots of water too.

We as a family (kids included) take gummies everyday vit C and elderberry

I run a home daycare . I would suggest giving him probiotics daily it will help strengthen his immune system.

VitaminD drops!! Daily

I’d get some children’s Zyrtec or some type of allergy medicine that he can take daily and see if that helps! Both of my kids have horrible allergies and if they don’t take their medicine every day they’re allergies act up!

Im in ece. First year they get sick alot. Also he probably needs to go more than day a week so he can build and immunity

Maybe send him to a different daycare, and see if he gets sick.
