My three year old still breastfeeds: Can I smoke ciggarettes?

Girrlll!!! Smoke that cig. Dont listen to anyone and definitely dont ask complete strangers for advice on subjects like this one. If you want to smoke a cig, go for it. Benefits from breast milk out-weigh the affects of 1 cig break. Just make sure you bundle yourself good so the smell dont stick on you (including hands and hair). Youre doing fine mama:raised_hands::raised_hands::clap:

I wouldn’t, anything you put into your body you’re then feeding your baby. If you really need to smoke, then I’d switch her to formula :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: you’re not a bad mom for smoking, everyone has their vices. I respect you for asking , especially a question like this were all the sanctimommys can jump you ! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Your child’s development (especially brain) and immune system still benefits from you, that is awesome! Keep on Mom’n :+1::+1::+1:

I’d hold off. You’ve come this far, may as well wait until your little one weans. Even so, not smoking will be better for you both in the long run. It will be on your clothes, hair, etc. And there will be second hand smoke exposure at some point. I used to be a smoker and quit about 7 years ago. If you can hold off, I encourage it but it’s your choice at the day. Don’t listen to the haters about nursing- how long you breastfeed is your business. Currently 26months strong myself and no end in sight. My LO is a tough one!

Sorry, why on earth would you want to start smoking again after 3 years! Stay away. My advice is yes. Any toxins that are different to your child won’t be any good. Stay away from tobacco, breastfeeding for 3 years, personally wouldn’t do it. But each to their own.

Your breastfeeding child ingests whatever you have. If you wouldn’t want your child to smoke a cigarette you should not feed it to them through nursing

So if you smoke while breast feeding, the chemicals in the cig will get to him. If you are going to smoke, I wouldn’t breast feed honestly. I don’t know how long one cig takes to get out of your blood stream and what not, I would look it up… and I would ween him off slowly, I tried cutting mine off immediately (someone else’s bad advice :joy::woman_facepalming:t3:) and it was horrible breast pain and swelling :joy: I smoke and it’s not easy to quit, but from what I understand, they can taste the cigarette in the breast milk :woman_shrugging:

Oh hon. I am trying to quit. Cigarettes went up over two dollars a pack. Plus my health. I hope you stay strong. It’s such a unhealthy expensive habit. plus not sure if it’s good for baby. As nicotine goes into your bloodstream.

I can understand why you may need an occasional ciggie. Lol.
I’m sure what’s good for your family is what ur already doing… and I’m sure you must have a maximum age limit with your breast feeding. Every woman is different. But hopefully before kindergarten is always a good goal. For development and what not. Hope you find your answer amongst all the opinions. :v:t3:

Smoking will harm the people you live with through second hand smoke , particularly if you smoke in close proximity to them. Best not to. Is there a way for you to work out why you want to smoke? Your whole body health can be put at risk. If you can work out why you feel the need then someone can advise and support you in not smoking. Use the professional health sites on the internet to show you all the many many reasons not to smoke. Save the money you would spend for a healthy treat now and then; a massage, trip to the hairdresser, day out etc. If boredom or something to chew on try gum or celery or a carrot. Glad you have asked for advice.

As an exclusive pumper for 2.5 years, I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with nursing your little at 3yo.

Follow the advice about smoking after feeds, ditch the bottle and switch to a cup because its better for his teeth- needing braces because of bottle and binkie use will SUCK for your little as he gets older

My sister had to breastfeed her son longer due to a health problem.

I breastfeed my son until he was three. He only nursed first thing in the morning and before bed. I Would have an occasional cigarette inbetween those times.

Smoking while breastfeeding is not good. Not good for baby.

Maybe you should think of quitting smoking…it’s not good for you or your baby. jist saying but you already know that. Good luck.

One trick that worked when my sisters kids were almost 3 she would rub garlic, jalapeño, stuff that the kids wouldn’t like on her nipple. It would be best not to smoke if you are still lactating

It’s just the occasional cigarette. I smoke, so I do understand. It should be ok. I personally just made sure that it wasn’t right after I smoked, just so I didn’t have it lingering on me. I can’t see where a couple a day is going to hurt. Like you say, you’re weening him, so it’s not going to be much longer.
And for you all with opinions on how long she’s breastfed, we all make decisions based on what’s right for our babies. Yes, 3 is older than average, but it’s not like the kid is in school or old enough to have a job. This is HER bonding time with HER child…no need for being hateful just because it doesn’t meet your standards of what you THINK is the “right way”.

Please ignore all the judgemental people on here. I’m so sorry. If you can, I would avoid cigarettes while you’re still breastfeeding. It’s just safer. As for the other, you breastfeed that baby for as long as you are comfortable with it! Ignore the haters.

No. Smoking is detrimental. I hope you can find another way to cope with stress. Maybe a new hobby or skill. You’ve been nicotine free for 3 years (assuming that u completely stop while breastfeeding), don’t waste that 3 years of an addiction-free life. Health is wealth momma. Not just for ur baby, but most especially for your own health.

Don’t do it! I quit smoking for eight years while having my babies then started again. Now here I am two years later still trying to quit.

Do what you feel is right. Just be careful and not let ashes fall in child. Your child, your life, your choice and no one elses.

Everything effects your milk. I was able to tell with all my kids what effected them. I don’t think it’s worth trying, and hoping it won’t effect baby. Maybe pump after your occasional smoke and don’t use it …throw it out, as your baby can still eat something else during that time, and then drink more water. Make sure you are clean of any second hand smoke in general.

Breastfeed if you want and slowing wean. Your the Mom. But don’t start smoking. I started and “ just a couple” well 35 years later and after many attempts I finally quits. My grown children were very happy.

3 years old isn’t exactly baby age, that’s a toddler. I suggest weaning soon because if you want to smoke that’s the best course here. Nicotine passes they the milk.

No judgement here. I’m not sure if baby will taste it in your milk so might put him off.

I know you can drink and it not effect your babies milk. (shot in a swimming pool is the term we use).

I think tobacco pouches is better than cigarettes as they have so many chemicals in them.

Don’t worry about all these judgmental people who all do things they could be judged for. The simple answer is yes. As long as kiddo isn’t latched on while you’re smoking, you can smoke cigarettes.

I never heard of a kid breast feeding at 3 years old! They have teeth and can eat solid foods! Do they get all the nutrition that their older body needs?

Congratulations on breastfeeding for three years! That’s amazing!!! A great start for your baby!!! First: no, it’s not good to smoke. Ever. Especially when you have kids. It’s not about it being in breastmilk. It’s about the environmental poison in the air and on clothing, toys, eating utensils, etc. Second: bottles should be stopped by this point. It is not good for developmental purposes. That should probably be stopped before the breastfeeding.

Wow never new there was a certain date to stop breastfeeding surly long as possible is healthy option if available

About time you let your three year old grow up

Hmm. What do you think are the consequences of smoking while breastfeeding?

What do you think will happen to the child if the ashes fall on him?

Do you think it’s more advisable till after he is finished?

My advice, wait until they are done and smoke outside so the chances of secondhand smoke will be lessened.

smoking is very bad to both of you momshie…please stop it early.it will cause cancer much better eat healthy food so that your baby will absorb it:blush::blush::blush:

Ouch all them teeth! - i don’t smoke anyway but I wouldn’t say smoking and breastfeeding is a good thing just like you can’t drink alcohol and breastfeed.

Don’t get surprised in the future if you see him or her holding cigarettes in the hand also because nicotine is addictive and it will pass to the baby through breastfeeding second smoking around children give them serious lung problems as their lungs are delicate one of our relatives baby died from it, I guess the baby better off with formula to have the choice not to take in nicotine and you not to smoke around the baby

I can’t imagine breastfeeding for three years ! Awesome job mama! I think you should give yourself a pat on the back. Wean your child get him ready for preschool. you relax have a cig and a glass a wine. You deserve it ! Don’t read the negative comments. You do you !

Do not smoke and breatfeed! Breastfeed as long as your baby needs you! A Healthy Mom.

This is what I think: if you ask a question, be ready for all kinds of answers. The end.

I assume you have not smoked since you had the baby because you’ve been breast feeding this whole time…why start back up. You’ve kicked the habit so be done with smoking for good…do it for the baby

If you are breast feeding no matter what the child’s age NO it is not safe to smoke the nicotine will pass through breastmilk

I didn’t not smoke with either one of my boys. I was not not a smoker at the time. I had a very hard time having my first one as he was really to big for me to have but they didn’t do C sections like now days that often believe in let nature take it’s course. He weight ,9 lbs and 23 inches long coming from a woman weighted 110 lbs got PG and ended up 165 . My tail bone was broken. Lift lip is lower than right one and I still suffer to this day with those issues. And no I did not breast feed as that’s reason God invented the bottle and I knew I had to go back to work and that pumping your milk just not for me. And I can tell you that I had to very healthy boys. I do not believe babies are much more healthy on breast milk. I for was raised on it and I was sick all the time until I turn 5. And no never judge anyone how they raise their children. That’s not our job… God Bless

I’m a smoker, I breastfeed my 8 month old, he is a healthy baby. I don’t smoke around him.

If you’ve stopped smoking, stay stopped child might not light the smell.

Tons and tons of people breastfeed and let their child wean be it age 1 or age 4. Who cares? If you wanna smoke that is your thing just do it outside and wash hands and change shirt when you come in.

Time to put the boob back in your bra. That kid has teeth. Time to break him of the boob and the bottle. Give that kid a glass to drink from.

I wouldn’t advise you smoke at all it’s not healthy for you or the child. Get off that nasty habit.

I don’t suggest it at all. Nicotine can pass through your breast milk to the child. If you want to smoke the child has to not be breast fed anymore due to the nicotine passing through breast milk. Not good for the child’s health. Not good for yours either but I’m not here to preach. Just to inform of the knowledge I have on the matter.

I heard you can smoke, not while latched obviously. We all know cigs are bad regardless, but that’s not the question. This is a question I’d take up with your family doctor. Unless someone here has the credentials to advise on such a topic, but ultimately, ask your doctor.

Supposedly we can drink alchy, consume weed, take pharmaceutical prescriptions and still breast feed. :woman_shrugging:t4: who’s to say a stogie once in awhile is bad…

He isn’t a baby- he is a toddler - wean him anyway if you want a cig

Smoking is bad anyways so you are giving your son the best food keep it clean

I’ve always heard that whatever you eat/drink comes through breastmilk.
Smoking…who really knows???
I personally would not, especially after 3 years.
But…that’s up to you. Keep in mind, smoke clings to you, your clothes, your hair, when your child is close to you, nursing, he is bound to smell it. Secondhand smoke isn’t good for anyone.
God Bless! Breastfeed until he’s ready not to.

He isn’t a baby. At three he is a toddler. Your child you choice. Would I smoke and still breastfed no but again your choice.

I’d try to wean him of noth. I think three years old is too old. And she should not smoke when breastfeeding

If your child is old enough to ask you for your boob because he’s thirsty and wants some milk to go with his Oreos, he is to old to be breastfed. What in the world?:flushed:

Even if you’re not breastfeeding of course it’s not okay to smoke. Second hand smoke.

I smoke cigarettes but I did choose not to breastfeed because of it besides he’s 3…give him a sippy cup

Too old, why are you breastfeeding, and smoking I’m not saying about that.

Kids age and mature differently. And people have different reasons for their breastfeeding time frame. I stopped breastfeeding when my daughter was 3. I knew she would be my last. Fertility issues.

I go to bars that are smoke filled. Or around people who do. Its the same. But, hang tough and keep away. They are yuckky

A lot of ppl have made comments about what our mothers may have done when they had small kids, which makes no sense to me. We are supposed to be learning from their mistakes, not repeating them. Parents didn’t use car seats either. Should we consider doing that too since we survived it? We all know how unhealthy it is to smoke and how smoking is dangerous and harms children. Even after the child isn’t nursing it isn’t safe to smoke near the child nor even having clothing on that has the smoke etc in / on it. If the smoking is deemed to be more important than nursing your child, then ween the child off and take every possible precaution you can to keep the child safe. Keep in mind though that children nurse for reasons other than wanting the milk, they want / need the closeness, it’s comforting, it creates a bond, etc. Giving that up could be hard on both of you. Just some things to consider

Breast feeding at this age? Gotta be bad for his teeth I would consider stopping this.

Everything you ingest goes to the baby to some degree.
One cigarette every now and then won’t kill him…probably won’t even bother him (if it really is an occasional thing). But it’s not healthy. That nicotine and all the other chemicals and crap in cigarettes will go to your kid.
Not to mention the smoke on your clothes and hair and skin…which is more likely to do harm.

I have no clue BUT I agree if you have not smoked in 3 years then momma keep it up it is better for you in the long run. You are strong and can do it!

You should be asking your doctor these questions but honestly the answer is NO… If it’s bad for you it’s bad for your child. He/She is 3… maybe it’s time to take the kid off the tit and give them a cup, then you can smoke all the cigarettes you want!:woman_shrugging:

I hate to admit this but woman smoke their whole pregnancies. Babies are born fine, although I’d never agree or recommend it. I guess smoking once in a while while breastfeeding isn’t as bad. Second hand smoking is worst.

I’m not a doctor nor is my opinion the only one. I simply stated what has happened before. I do not advise it.

If you still breastfeeding, and you are planning to continue to breastfeed your son . Please, Don’t smoke. All those awful chemicals and nicotine stays in your body and it’s going to go to your toddler body. Smoking is not healthy for you, so it won’t be for your child. If you really want to smoke, then quit breastfeeding completely.

My great grandson is 9 months old. He drinks from a sippy cup or cup with a straw. Only at night for bed gets a bottle. He eats good. Loves veggies, fruit. just about anything. The sooner you wean him from the breast the better. Really a three year old is old enough to do a sippy cup of milk before bed.

Ugh… This has to be the most assinign question ever… Is this even real?.. Why are you still breastfeeding if you are also bottle feeding and btw, your kid shouldn’t have a bottle at 3 flipping years old… That’s just lazy on your part…

That was a very redundant question. However I really hope at almost 3 you are pumping that milk and giving it to that child in a cup

If you don’t smoke Please don’t start. IF you already smoke, please don’t do it around your child. I am a victim of COPD due to second hand smoke of both my parents when I was young, up to age 6 years and then they stopped for a few years only to start again. My mom stayed quit longer than my dad but she too had COPD. Both of my parents are dead now. At any rate, Please don’t do it around your child and do wash up and change clothing before you are around your child again. Speaking as someone with COPD from second hand smoke who NEVER Smoked in her life at all. You don’t want to give this to your child.

You can have the cig it won’t harm the baby!! You do you mom and don’t listen to all these “perfect” parents

Look it up. It takes 90 mins for half the amount of nicotine to leave your breast milk. So if you strategically smoke after you breastfeed him and wait at least 3 hrs after you smoke, he won’t get any nicotine from your milk.

Ask ur doctor about it. He/she should know if there’s any harm to the breast milk itself if u take nicotine

The la Leche league suggest that if you are going smoke then it is still better to breastfeed than bottle feed. However, know that you continue to exhale CO2 and nicotine will be in your milk for hours after. So toddler will get some. I’m not a medical professional but there are other ways to get chemicals in their body, like standing near a car exhaust or on the side of the road.

You made it three years without smoking though! That’s incredible!

Personal opinion: Once he will be able to remember nursing on Mom then he’s too old…BUT…your kid do what you want, doesn’t phase me

I would recommend weaning him off completely b4 you start smoking as nicotine is extremely addictive and yes so can the child become addicted as well!

Second hand smoke is just as bad. Dont be selfish!

If you only smoke a couple you would be better off not at all. You will feel better not doing it. The urge will go away and you won’t be able to stand the smell. Do it for yourself and your baby. Find another thing to take its place. They stink! And it gets in your walls and furniature. Cigarettes causes heart disease, cancer, asthma, and heartburn. You shouldn’t smoke around your baby. Second hand smoke is bad for your child. I am not being mean. My husband didn’t listen to me for years. I hated smelling like an ash tray because he smoked. I ended up having open heart surgery at 48. Now his heart has failed. He is on a LVAD machine implanted in his chest at 60 to help pump his heart. It has given him 5 more years but when the machine fails he fails. It alters your life, living and depending on electricity. Being mostly homebound, not able to do the things you love like fishing because you can’t get wet. No swimming or hot tubs, no walking in the rain. Be healthy and may God bless you So you can walk in the sunshine after the rain with your child. Life is too short.

Are you comfortable with your child smoking?

Wouldn’t recommend it. But I did do a bit of breastfeeding as a smoker. I would pump when I first woke up and then smoke. Then I would t breastfeed till looking after that cig. But as others have said… ur addiction has been knocked for years. DONT LIGHT UP!!

It won’t go into your milk, so it’s the 2nd hand smoke you would worry about and that’s a concern always.

Omg read your own dumb ass question and sleep on it

This made my brain hurt. If you make the excellent, healthy choice to breastfeed your baby, why would you want to much it up? Stay on the healthy track, lead your baby to healthy adulthood with your shining example. Be better, momma!

If you’re asking a bunch of strangers permission to toke on a cancer stick while still breastfeeding then you already know the answer.

Plain cig? Still nicotene haha but i would suggest not, still goes through your body. Most ppl have healthy babies anyway but to be safe, no. I stopped breastfeeding as soon as i had a cigarette.

I don’t think smoking at all is a good idea. I don’t like cigarettes. I call them cancer sticks. So no you shouldn’t smoke cigarettes especially if you have children

If you are nursing (no matter how old your child is) no nicotine, alcohol, drugs (legal or otherwise). It is what it is.

If he’s 3, it’s time to turn off the tap as it were. Way past time actually. And yes cigarettes harm your baby! Even after they’re born, secondhand smoke kills. Best for him and for you to make him stop breastfeeding cold Turkey and stop smoking

You can clearly see everyone that have a problem with breastfeeding past 1… it’s disgusting since majority of them are women.

No you cannot smoke cigarettes when you are breastfeeding . Jeez people .
There is right and wrong .
Smoking causes cancer. Therefore do not smoke if you’re breastfeeding .
It’s not that hard.

Breastfeed as long as you feel comfortable!!! However, your 3 year old should no longer be called a baby, he is a toddler, a child. I won’t judge you for having the occasional cigarette, however, you definitely need to and should throw away the bottles. He is too old for the bottle, ours went in the trash at 10 months… bottles should be tossed no later than 1 year old… it effects their teeth and the shape of their palate.

My mom smoked cigarettes while I was on her breast lol.

Although with saying that wait 2-3 hrs after the smoke to feed

I would say find something else to handle your stress besides smoking cigarettes. I’m assuming you already quit smoking so why start back again ? You have made it this long without cigarettes keep it up. You can do it :muscle:

Just wash your hands wear a smoking jacket or sweater and you’ll be fine. Good luck on weaning

They will get nicotine through your milk. Also smoking will dry up milk supply.

If you haven’t smoked in 3 years why would u want to start now?

  1. How long has it been since you smoked? If it’s been awhile, don’t start again. It isn’t healthy for anyone. If you must smoke , don’t smoke around your kid.

  2. He is too old for a bottle. Use a sippy cup or straw cup or regular cup.
