My toddler is very overweight, what could be the cause?

What is she drinking? And how much?

Yes tots are usually chunky but a 65 pound 2 year old is a bit concerning. I’d try to get to the bottom of it even if it means switching peds.

What’s your definition of healthy? And even healthy things can be over eaten… but I would look into thyroid issues for sure.

Have you had her thyroid checked?

Thyroid is my guess, My dog got over weight and now she is on thyroid medicine.

It isn’t always “ bad foods” do a food journal wasn’t until someone brought a food journal to their dr that more tests were ran and it was caught as to the illness the child has child was 19-20 months old

Get a new doctor. You’re 100% right. 65 lbs is way too much for a 2 year old to weigh… Thyroid can be an issue. Definitely talk to another doctor.

Definitely keep a food journal. Also be sure to note when or if your child seems to have a higher appetite or none at all. It will help determine the issues. Is your child always hungry? Or are they not hungry at all and storing all food in the body which may be a digestion issues vs thyroid etc. The more information you keep, the easier it will be to get help.

Also, absolutely no food but at the table and NO screen time or electronics while eating. This makes sure kids aren’t “bored eating”.

Have they checked your child’s thyroid. Or have they tested for either hypoglycemia or diabetes?

If you do a thyroid check you need more than just the tsh checked. Have the t3,t4 and even the antibodies checked.
I would do that and I agree with seeing the genetic dr.
You little one doesn’t have diabetes or a heart condition?

My son weighed 60 lbs at 2 years old but his height was off the charts. So, it depends on everything together. My son was over 10lbs when he was born at 22 inches long. He just turned 18 and is 6’8 at 240lbs. He was always bigger than average but healthy. He was always on the move. Sometimes babies are bigger or smaller than others. I have learned that you cannot compare babies as none are the same.

First step is being brutally honest with yourself about food consumption.A two year old only needs 1000-1200 calories a day and if you are not portioning that out they can take in way more.The other thing is what they eat.Even if your child eats healthy foods they will still take in too much if they are eating 4 apples or 6 low-fat string cheeses for snack in a day.You definitely don’t want your child to lose weight at such a young age but you want to prevent any gaining.

Does she happen to have asthma? My oldest is over weight and they believe it was all the steroids he was given at the age of 2 . He’s a tank im 6 ft tall and he’s to my boobs and he’s a Size 4 shoe . He’s just big. It could be genetics my husband is only 5 10" and very lean . But my dad was 6 4" linebacker huge . And he only like water same as me . The Dr’s tried to say I was over feeding him as well but that wouldn’t explain his hight and shoe size . And we were healthy. Yes snacks here and there but limited . I hate how the Dr’s assume it’s food not something medical at fault . I hope you get answers soon. As long as your daughter isn’t having major health issues . :pray:t2::pray:t2:

Too much food/snacks, even “healthy” ones can cause a caloric surplus that tour child is turning into excess fat. Start tracking how many calories she’s consuming, including those in liquid form.

Cut out sugary drinks. I hope no soda would be given to a 2 year old but even juices need to be cut down with 50% juice 50% water. Cut out excess snacks, offer fresh fruit in moderation like a half of an apple and maybe a low-fat yogurt and 10 gold fish crackers as a lunch. Half of a sandwich instead of a full sandwich with 2 pieces of bread, use on slice and cut it in half. Substitute the other half with half a banana or something. And take her to the park at least 30 mins a day 4-5 days a week. Walk there and back if it’s under a mile. My 2 year old walks 1 mile at a time and can play for 45 mins, but I bring the stroller and usually push him back. :rofl:

Keep a diet (as in daily food intake not “diet” like weightloss) diary and weigh portions on a food scale for a few weeks to show the doctor what your child is consuming. Log physical activity during this time as well. Having that documentation can help your child’s doctor get a better understanding of your child’s health and make recommendations or order additional testing. Request a CBC, thyroid panel (with free T3 & T4 measurements not just TSH), glucose test, and hormone screening. Your child may have a metabolic condition, thyroid condition, genetic condition, or may be perfectly healthy but you are underestimating intake. Tracking your child’s habits is the least invasive way to get a clear picture of what the next steps should be. :heartpulse:

My oldest son has a rare genetic chromosomal mutation. Most kids with this genetic disorder are morbidly obese. It’s one of the top diagnostic criteria that they look for before they start doing genetic testing to look for this mutation. I would suggest looking up a condition called Bardet-Biedl Syndrome and compare your child’s symptoms with the list of associated symptoms related to it. Actually average 35 calories per pound

Write down everything you all eat and activity you have everyday for a month. Could be a combination of things. Tells you AND doc exactly. Then insist on tests… including brain scan to rule out any tumors etc. My great nephew had opposite, severe weight loss and docs were dumbfounded. My neice his mom kept pushing docs until finally they did brain scans and found an inoperable brain tumor. Hes alive today because that led him to St Jude and lifesaving chemo trial. Nutritionists might help with a better diet. Dont give up but also be prepared to make signoficant changes depending on outcome.

Get a second opinion with a Pediatric nutritionist there is an underlining why she is overweight and it could be medical, As well as genetic genes. Our granddaughter was Diagnosed with Graves’ disease at two years old so anything is possible. She is 15 now and asked to watch her weight and What she eats .

I second the suggestion above for seeing an endocrinologist. I was born with hypothyroidism and my drs told my mom that it’d be really easy for me to lose control of my weight if I was not taken care of (i.e. medication and treatment)

As an adult I’ve noticed that if I go prolonged periods w out my meds my weight fluctuates even when I’m not eating unhealthy. Have them check her TSH levels, if they are high she may a thyroid condition.

Every single time we go to the doctor, the pediatrician says my oldest is overweight and I need to cut out all snacks and make her exercise more. But she’s not overweight. Her father is a 6"2 heavyweight champion and I’m a 5"1 & 95lbs small woman. She’s just a big child, takes after her father. She’s 4. Pic of her and her sister thats 3 same father, same mom. One takes after him and one takes after me. As long as your child is happy and comfortable with her appearance and she’s healthy otherwise, then screw what the doctor says.

Could be medical I’d take a journal of her food what kinds, times ECT then go to a specialist.

She needs to be seen by an Endocrinologist ASAP. No matter what kind of food she is eating, she cannot reach a weight of 65 pounds without there being a medical reason why.

Her Pediatrician is doing her an injustice by not referring you to a specialist.

Presumably the dr takes her height into account before telling you she’s overweight. Id keep a food diary for a month and go back for another visit to see what the dr suggests.
There really are no unhealthy foods…just the amount of them we eat and many healthy snacks…including fruit…are loaded with sugar or fat. Also look at her milk intake. Milk is a food . Offer water or diluting juice as an alternative if she drinks a lot

As others have said, definitely check out her thyroid if it hasn’t been done already. I have hypothyroidism and gained weight that I can’t get off since being diagnosed.

Nothing if she is healthy she’s just a big girl. My son weighed the same at 2 I managed to get him down 10lbs by only feeding him breakfast lunch and dinner and giving mini wheats cereal as a snack and lowered his whole milk to skim milk but he’s 3 now and he’s growing into his weight

Take her to a pediatric Endocrinologist , my daughter had the same issue and was diagnosed with Precocious puberty at 3 years old , it can cause more problems for her as she grows . Good luck :heart:

Check the labels of the things you’re feeding her. I guarantee there’s sugar in it.

Have they checked her endocrine system? She may be have adrenal issues. Have they ran tests? Done any CAT scans or MRI’s. A friend of my daughter had a tumor
On her Adrenal gland I do believe. And she grew like crazy and was overweight. Go and get another opinion.

I would start documenting everything she eats, and the amount of physical activity she’s doing everyday. After a couple months of data bring it to the attention of her pediatrician again.

If you feel there’s something going on with you’re baby it’s up to you to fight for answers. You know her better than any doctor ever could.

You need a genetic specialist if the routine thyroid & other tests have come back clear.
Don’t allow them to dismiss you, demand a specialist and if they won’t send you then switch pediatricians.

Trust your gut. Even if you were over feeding… 65 pounds for a 2 year old is AGGRESSIVE and dangerous. I second getting thyroid checked AND a second opinion.

My niece has a tumor in her pituitary gland that has caused her to gain weight and not be able to lose it. I would look into adrenal and pituitary gland issues as well as thyroid problems.

Your toddler is 2. We live in a world where everyone needs 2 fit in a box and that in my eyes is bullshit. My baby is now 5 and weighs more than her 7 year old brother, is almost as tall as him and has bigger feet then him but you know what she’s growing, she eats a lot but she is healthy…
Just enjoy being her mother because as parents once we get to this way of thinking we ourselves can influence body image issues.

Look into Cushings Disease. It could be what is happening.

Not just checking her thyroid. Make sure they run a complete panel. This is important and many Endos are ignorant to this. My suggestion is finding a functional doctor or functional Endocrinologist as they’re more receptive to accurate testing. Good luck!

Yes get her thyroid my grand daughter has it she’s 7 plus it may stop her growth plus there could be wrong it affects kidney so it can damage your body not know I know cause I have thyroid problems

Definitely not trying to judge you but wow. I would be extremely alarmed. Your toddler weighs the same amount as my almost 12-year-old… something is not right. Keep going to Dr. after doctor if necessary to figure out what’s going on. Her keeping on this much weight is going to cause health problems in the near future. Which you already fear by asking this. Be her advocate :white_heart:

My daughter was the opposite, incredibly malnourished, for four years of me insisting there was a problem, four years of doctors berating me for being a bad mom, only feeding her junk food, starving her, etc. finally I got adamant that they do bloodwork. She had celiac disease all along

My daughter is a “bigger” girl and has been since 2 she’s 5 now and slimming out fast! My son was the same way! He’s a beam pole now! They grow out of it mama. I was also a big kid. It’s nothing your doing wrong. We also had my kids tested for everything (blood work) they’re happy and healthy little assholes! Everyone is different. They are still the sweetest little things and beautiful :heart: the judgement is hard but I learned to keep telling people to mind their own Damn business unless they’re raising my kids there word means Absolutley shit. :heart: and besides chubby kids are cute as fuck!

Could be an Endocrinology medical issue, get a referral from Pediatrician, start there

Advocate for your child! If something doesn’t seem right, don’t stop until you find a doctor that will listen and dig for you! If nothing is “wrong” then that’s wonderful but on the off chance that this is some sort of hard to diagnose medical condition, the sooner you figure out what it is the better! May need to write down what she is eating. Is she getting a lot of hidden sugar? Does she eat a lot of carbs or fruit? I would jot down everything she eats and see exactly what it is including what others such as father and grandparents give her. This also includes drinks. Juice has a lot of sugar and is not as healthy as one might think. Once you see what she is actually eating you can determine if she needs a change in her diet.

Not everyone is meant to be skinny. Just love her and stay active. If she ain’t sick and not active then there is nothing “wrong”

My daughter was a thick girl at 2, can’t remember weight. They kept telling me no more milk bottles but I kept going and thought she was fine until I look back on pics and she was a big girl. Now she’s evened out. Idk if this will be helpful or not

You need to make sure it’s not fluid retention to begin with.
