I would never punish a child regarding a bathroom issue, even if I thought they were exaggerating. Teachers should never deny a child bathroom privileges, ever. I most definitely would call the school and I would refuse the detention

I had this with my daughter i have always said if u can wait please do but if teacher refuses get up and go. Iv explained this to the school they removed her correction from the system and i have told them if she is refused but she feels she needs to she is to go. And the school are ok with this x
I have always told my kids walk out and I went through the same thing with my 11 year old son this year. He had a stomach ache after eating breakfast because they feed them crap and she told him no. He had to wait until lunch. I had a talk with her and that hasnt been a problem since. I told her if my child had medical issues because of it or had a accident in front of the class I’d be filing a lawsuit
I would go and talk to the principal . That’s what I did when my 5 year old was treated that way! She wound up wetting herself because she didn’t do what your son did! This is an unacceptable way to treat a child! Using the bathroom is a RIGHT…not a privilege .

Life is one challenge after another. I would discuss this with my son and encourage him to consider this teacher a challenge. See if he can change her attitude toward him. If not, the year is almost over, he can wait it out. We always want to protect our kids, but if we stand between them and ever little thing, they will never learn how to deal with real adversity when it comes.

A person, let alone a child, should NEVER be told they cannot go to the bathroom when they need to go.

Contact the teacher first and communicate your concerns and ask for her take on the situation. I’m pretty sure every school has “bathroom abusers,” those that go to the bathroom all the time. If students are given time between passing periods, they should try to use it then but, as a teacher, I know there are times when that doesn’t work out. I try to be pretty forgiving of bathroom requests but we also have a vaping crisis in this country with KIDS. Kids go to the bathroom to vape. They go to the bathroom to be on their phones that aren’t allowed in class. They go to the bathroom just to not have to do the lesson.
I know you asked him if he really needed to, but maybe the question should be, “do you do this often?” Even then, if it is his “regular time,” then it could be something that simply needs to be communicated about with the teacher.
Reach out to the TEACHER. don’t go above her. Utilize chain of command and have a synergetic relationship. It will get you much further.

Omg, wrong for the teacher. I’ve always told my kid, if you really have to go to the bathroom, then go even if the teacher tells you no. I will always support that one decision. Holding in pee is quite dangerous medically speaking. But, your kid is in the right making a decision for his health. No teacher has the right to scare him into making a dangerous decision on his health.
At the school I work at, students aren’t allowed to go to the toilet during lesson time. Some students have medical cards which means they can if required.
Our school has 2, 1 hour lessons and then a 40 min break and then the same again in the afternoon.
Students are expected to use the toilet during social times.
I was an elementary teacher for several years and it did become a major issue of my students going to the bathroom during art class. It was a little bit of a walk, and students were required to have two students go with them for safety purposes. The entire art class was a swinging door with bathroom trips. She couldn’t get anything done. We had a bathroom in our classroom, and students never had to ask, they would just go, so there was no reason why half my class had to go every time we had art. Art class was only 30 minutes! The students had told the art teacher I wouldn’t let them use the bathroom. I started reminding students about 15 min before art class to use the restroom and that they should not be asking during art. My students did not ever ask during p.e., technology, or stem. They were clearly taking advantage of the art teacher .

They shouldn’t even have to ask permission to go to the bathroom. I had a teacher that just had a couple pieces of wood with bathroom carved on them. If you needed to go you walked up and grabbed the bathroom pass and went. No permission needed nor should it be needed. Schools have boarder lined infringing on basic rights ever since they were founded. If you don’t agree with that teacher’s decision, I would say it is absolutely time to have a conference with the teacher the principal and your child. I wouldn’t stand for my child being bullied by another peer or an adult.
As a teacher, I have been through this many times. Sometimes saying no is not so much telling the one who’s asking but, letting the entire class that bathroom trips are not going to disrupt the class.
However, if I had a student walk out, I would have a private conversation with them. I would apologize and explain why I had said no. If the child really had to go, I would not give the consequence but maybe offer a special time together. They would be missing from recess so the rest of the class sees but they will be somewhere special.
I’d be pissed. My kids know how I feel about this. And if they have to go they go
For everyone saying “just go,” please consider thinking about whether students might be “repeat offenders.” This would require a simple, respectful conversation with the teacher. Call and ask. It won’t hurt. If the teacher then says, well, your student uses the restroom at the same time every day or your student is in the bathroom during every class period, this might mean you need to have him/her/them checked by a doctor (my own kid has diabetes and part of her diagnosis came from frequent bathroom visits). Or, it might simply be that the student is spending time in the bathroom to get away from the lesson.
Either way, the conversation, if done respectfully, can only benefit the learning, life, and health of your own student while also maybe limiting the interruption to the learning of other students.

My daughter is always going to the bathroom. She has over active bladder and has had stomach issues for 7 years now. So i tell the teachers when she has to go she has to go. Well some teachers wont let her go. And she ends up peeing herself i keep telling her when you got to go you go even if they refuse to let you. If you get introuble for going to the bathroom at school you are not introuble with mom.
Teacher is wrong. Period. It is a everyone bodily function that you cannot control. Making a child hold it and potentially cause them to have an accident …no matter the age, is just horrible . contact them. I would be raising hell. I told my kids ask first nicely and if told no and it’s an emergency go anyway and we’ll deal with the reproductions later. He did nothing wrong, as long as it is not a frequent event indont see why he should be in any trouble.

Yes. Take it to the school and tell them he will not be serving detention for being a human with basic bodily functions.

My daughter has an overactive bladder. Her teacher has been told. She still won’t let her go. I’ve told her to go anyway and I’ll deal with it later but she’s too scared. The day something happens or she gets in trouble for going I’m gonna lose my shit on the school.
