My husband and I just got a new puppy. I’ve had a cat for about 4 years now and wanted him to have a pet too. Well, it turns out my 2 month old is severely allergic. I don’t want to be a jerk about it, but from what her pediatrician says its not something that’s exactly fixable. We’ve literally been arguing all day about it. He says I’m too quick to get rid of the puppy, but I’m the one dealing with my daughter all day while she’s crying because she’s suffering. He works alot so I’m also with the puppy all day and it just makes my daughters allergies worse being around me. What do you mamas think?
I think the dad’s pretty stupid to not care that his child is allergic!
Do they have allergy med for 2 months old that will help?? If it the puppy then could be the cat as well
Maybe try putting it outside just to see if it helps. If not get rid of it.
It shouldn’t even be a question…get rid of the dog. And the man if hes gonna make his kid suffer.
I think he’s being selfish. Sorry he’s being like that. It sucks but it’s not like you just decided it is too big a hassle.
Try to find a solution first. Don’t punish the dog because you didn’t consider that your child could have allergies
Dad can take his puppy to doggy daycare or to work with him
Are you sure it’s not the cat? My son lived with cats till he was 3 years old he came out in hives his eyes swollen and watering, it was horrible, he gets this reaction around cats all the time
Leave the puppy in a room while your daughter plays without it around her?
Get rid of that dog! Its making your child sick, humans always come before animals
We have a friend who had the same problem they actually make an hypoallergenic shampoo that removes the dander from the dog so people who are allergic dont have symptoms nor are bothered by it
Should always have the kids around animals before deciding to get one.
Make an appointment with a paediatric allergist and seek their opinion
I’ll kick out the husband and the puppy together… are you kidding me?? Smh
Get rid is bit harsh.Just find a new home n of u can’t after real trying then take it back to shelter
Re-home the puppy now while it’s young and more adoptable. That would be the kindest solution to all parties.
Is daddy that stupid and insensitive…
If you.r husband is that bad get rid of him.
I have a child that is allergic to animals, but I refused to get rid of my dogs, I am allergic to both dogs and cats, I do a lot of sneezing, and my eyes itch. But I know how to manage it and I know how to his allergies as well…
Yes…try the hypoallergenic shampoo…and there is also a rub on allergy lotion for cat dander…I’m allergic to both…and have used both of these products…so can enjoy my furbabies…hope this works…
Well if you have to take care of both while he’s working what you say goes.
U should’ve checked it out before u brought pup home, talk to ur pediatrician, maybe he can help with allergies cause that’s going to be hard on growing up…
It’s no ones fault. It happens. No need to fight with your husband. Offer him a few alternative solutions…if those dont pan out after honest effort, start looking for a good home for the pup. It is ideally better to rehome the pup while its younger anyways.
Rehome the puppy and get a different one that your child isn’t allergic too… I’m allergic to long hair dogs but have a Collie Sheppard mix that doesn’t bother me and my mom has yorkies and lapso apso that don’t as well…

*Allergy test said it was just a dog allergy
Find a home for the Dog
I’m allergic to every animal and if you want your daughter to have a decent quality childhood you need to find a different place for that dog.
Only to dogs😞. Some dogs are hypo alergenic do your research. Bless someone else with this bundle of joy, and find another if it is truely alleries!
Get a chihuahua… they are not allergic…
My ex brought in a pit once knowing I didn’t like pits I made him get rid of it ( besides where we lived they are illegal in town) he in turn made me get rid of my cat I had for 13 years Thank goodness I’m no longer with him but pets are our babies too but if you are having to deal with the puppy your kid being miserable sometimes sacrifices have to be made your S/O needs to realize it’s what is best for the child
Keep it outside if you don’t want to get rid of it tell dad if he wants it to build a fence for it. My brother was very allergic to all animals my whole life and we still had them. Just outside and didn’t bother him unless he went up to them and rubbed them all over
It really depends on how allergic she is and if she can take anything or you can do anything to make her allergies not that bad. Some can deal with it or eventually become not as allergic and others it just doesn’t work for them. You can try taking her to an allergist and maybe using special shampoo on the dog. If it’s really that serious and nothing can be done find the puppy a good home.
Honestly your child’s health is most important and your husband needs to understand that. Its not that you dont like the dog but your child is suffering make sure you find a good home for the dog and tell your husband its for your child’s best interest.
My husband takes allergy meds cuz he refuses to give up the animals. My son too
That shouldn’t even be a question. Not being rude. And your husband doesn’t think about yalls daughter before a dog? I wouldn’t hesitate to get rid of the puppy so your daughter isn’t suffering
Can the puppy be moved to a pen outside or is it strictly indoor? If can move it outside, then do. If not, then rehome the dog and both of y’all research hypoallergetic breeds that won’t affect your kid’s health. Hopefully he will come around and understand that you cant have that dog around your child as your child stays sick.
If he is persistent maybe choose something you both agree on like build a outdoor hut for the pup that’s roofed and heated for the cold temps and at night bring it in summer time same thing but put opening doors on it for some air
Give the puppy to a friend.
Could she be allergic to the cat? My son developed allergies to cats when he was 4 or so. And now he has np being around cats.
He’s 22years old. Not bashing just asking. Since she is so young. And around both.
My moms allergic to cats. She kept the cat to build up her tolerance. She can now pet and be near a cat with little to no problems it depends on the harshness of the allergy. Get her to an allergist to be tested to see the severity of the allergy.
Bye bye puppy
I’d be thinking of my baby first.
You said you had a cat , are you sure its not a cat allergy
Do some research on the area that you live in. Where I live, we have a place that does allergy shots and all and they will check for allergies as well. Turned out I was allergic to cats, oak and about 7 different types of grass. I was able to go get allergy shots once a week so I wouldn’t have to get rid of my cat or worry about the oak and grass around me.
Also, you may be able to find allergy Shampoo for dogs on Amazon. I was able to find some for my cat and for me, it works great.
Baby first
Plus training a puppy and a new baby at the same time not thanks
Hypoallergenic dog. Or strictly outside dog.
the issue with dog and cat allergies is the allergy can go one of two ways with exposure… they can get better or worse. my cat allergy only got better as I got older because my mom never remove the cats from the home they just simply were not allowed in my bedroom. now my son’s dog allergy seems to be doing the opposite.
Bathe real good n see if that helps? Sometime pet dander affects people seasonal allergy ?
I’m allergic to cats more so then dogs so could also be that cat as well allergies take a little to develop. Also depends what type of dog it is, you can get some breeds that are hypo allergenic so better for people with allergies same with cats. I would personally put both animals outside and try to avoid contact yourself and only feed and pat then wash your hands then see how she goes then introduce the cat back into the environment to be sure then the dog a week or 2 later. If need be they or the one who is making her this way needs to be outside from then on. But worse comes to worse rehome the dog to someone who can love and care for it.
The dog would have to go. Your kid should come first.
If your daughter was older I’d say consider allergy meds and testing but given the fact that she is only 2 months old I think her and her health are more important than the puppy and puppy needs a new home. I wouldn’t write off all dogs forever though. When she’s older she can have allergy testing done and many dogs are hypoallergenic.
Has the baby been allergy tested??? I mean at only 2 months of age how do you know it is not the cat the baby is allergic to ???
How do you know the baby is allergic, did you get a test done . I think you can not deal with the puppy . Puppy’s are hard work . A dog is for life not for Christmas
Get rid of husband and puppy
I’d try allergy meds and if they didnt work, no pupper
Sorry had to be sarcastic
Get rid of the puppy. That’s your baby that’s hurting.
Get rid of the puppy. A REAL man wouldn’t put his kid at risk like that. Should have never even been an argument.
I agree that kids come first however if you’re willing to play around with it for awhile you could try changing the dogs diet their diet effects their dander which is generally what people are allergic too or you could try taking them to a groomer and having them use a hypo allergenic shampoo I find it odd that your baby would be allergic to a dog but not a cat generally cats have much stronger allergy triggers which makes me believe that it’s something on the dog or the dogs diet
Schnauzers don’t shed so no allergic reactions
I was told by my sons doctor it’s almost impossible to tell until they’re much older if and what they are allergic to. Before getting rid of the dog based solely on allergies I would see a specialist for pediatric allergy issues. My son is 4 and has minor allergies to what they haven’t said. He takes Zyrtec every night before bed and he goes through phases where it’s much worse but with meds it’s manageable. We do have pets but they don’t sleep in his room or bed which they said could be an issue. A pet is a commitment just get a second opinion from a specialist before making such a big decision
Get rid of the puppy, your kids come first
How long have you had the puppy?
It could be pollen. It’s literally high right now. What makes you think it’s the dog?
My daughter was allergic to cats as a baby. Dogs didn’t bother her much unless they were long haired.
By the time she was a year old she had outgrown it. She was put on a daily allergy med because even going outside gave her a flare up. She’s now 3 and has no issues.
I think mama got in over her head and now is looking for a way out. You don’t throw animals away. Why blame a puppy for your inconsiderate decision making? Get baby Zyrtec.
Why does he need a puppy Now? He just had a new baby come into his life! I mean, s(e is much better than a puppy.mWhen she is old enough to want a puppy, around 3-4, then a Poodle does not shed. Other breeds, too. It is the shedding and dander she isnprobably allergic to. Give the puppy to a good home. People come first! …You have far bigger problems than your daughter being allergic to a puppy. 2 MONTHS OLD??? and the sdult FATHER needs something to care for and love, so you get him a dog? What are you thinking?
If you’ve done the allergy testing and it shows that your baby is allergic to the dog, then you’ll have to get rid of that Poppy I’m sorry. But if you haven’t done the test yet, then it may just be a coincidence.
Hi Karen, sorry that this has happened.
I understand the dilemma. There is nothing sweeter than a new puppy, except a new baby!
I am an RN, your baby is too young to be allergy tested, usually can be tested @ 6 mos. It
Get rid of the damn dog da
Allergic to puppy and not cat? What kind of puppy is it?
just an fyi kids build anti bodies the longer they are around pets and in most cases they will grow out of it.
I’m sorry your baby is too young if she is allergic to the puppy. I wouldn’t give her anything for allergies at 2 months that’s ridiculous. I’d keep him outside or to a new family. If he can’t agree. I’d move out.
You get rid of the dog
We thought my son an daughter had allergy to our dogs turned out it was mild ezema am seasonal allergies but never got worse had episodes when the season change but not to where it was unbearable an have to get rid of our dog there 8 an 3 now an we still have our dogs
Unless she cant breathe and has hives all the time. I say ur doctor is full of it.
If its just sniffles, its probably something else. Like dust, the hair time to vaccum, (i have dogs and vac every day because if i dont the hair makes me sneeze)
i know the allergies is not from the dog ,my daughter had be
I would get a 2nd opinion. It sounds like there’s several factors that baby could have sniffles from. Dog, cat, dust or Springtime. Is it worth fighting with hubby if it could be something else!?
its not the dog its the dander on the pet ,they have products for this ,try head and shoulders it may work 8it did for me
My kids are allergic to cats and dogs and we have two cats and a dog. They’re both on Claritin and Flonase and have no problems being around them. We keep the dog out of their rooms because they’re more allergic to him and sweep often.
Kids come 1st. Sorry to the puppy but things happen.
I think the child’s health is much more important and you can probably find a nice new home for the puppy cause the baby’s health will only get worst
My daughter was allergic to cats until she was one, thankfully we didn’t have cats. But my in laws did. Whenever we went over we made sure to give her Zyrtec and they made sure everything was swept really good. Babies are sensitive, and she will probably outgrow it. I wouldn’t just get rid of the dog. Clean often, get an air purifier, and some Zyrtec.
If your child is allergic to the puppy, then you should have your husband watch your child on his off day for several hours so he can see what you deal with on a daily basis
Puppy needs to go.
Puppy has to go & I will take him
Probably it’s the cat
Hey did of the dog or if his bone can’t agree get rid of both your kidcomez first
I would just get rid of the kid. Maybe you can make one without allergic tendencies. I can totally take her off your hands.
My son is allergic to cats and dogs to he can’t be around long haired dogs it’s the dander in them
I’m highly allergic to my dogs dander. 1 zyrtec a day and I have a touch of itchy eyes and some sneezes. I can barely function I’m so miserable without it. Medicate or the dog will have to go. Its miserable when you have bad allergies. Also sprays do help some I use an aloe and tea tree oil I put on my dog. It’s all about trial and error until you find what works best and how bad you want to keep the pet.
It really comes down to whats more important the dog or the child
Find the pup a new home. Your child is 2 months old, too young to be medicated for the sake of a pet that you just got. My kids are both allergic to cats and dogs. My son worse than my daughter. If he even gets a single hair on him, he gets covered in bad hives swell up all over, struggles to breathe, etc. Daughter just gets itchy and a few small hives. Son is medicated cause his so bad and even on medication, it only does so much. Everyone’s allergies are different and your child’s well being comes first.
Pack up the dog and the hubby lmfao
I had terrible allergies as a child (still do). Nothing helped but avoidance. I survived without pets. Your husband sounds like an ass. Maybe have the doctor talk to him or leave him alone with the baby for 3 days. He’ll change his tune.
He’s probably feeling emotional about it also and honestly he’s probably feeling blamed or guilty. Anger is a secondary emotion. The dog definitely needs to go but I would let him sleep on it and hopefully he realizes his baby’s wellbeing is far more important.
My pede told me our 11 month old was too young to show signs of a dog allergy. We had just gotten a puppy too. I’m now leaning towards dust allergy. I haven’t had her tested yet. Have u?
Pet professional and owner who’s also allergic to animals here✋🏻
With a child that young (really any age under 5) your pediatrician is right it’s not really that optional unfortunately, I know it sucks but your child’s health comes first. you can try a hypoallergenic breed (poodles of any size, some “doodles” are hypoallergenic but not all of them only the ones that inherited the poodle coats, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Yorkies, there are others if you’d like me to continue but they are mostly small breeds and they all need regular grooming, rescues have pure breds all the time especially if you look around or wait)
if she was older It would be more optional because she could communicate when allergy medicine or pet maintenance is needed (it’s really not safe otherwise) and she wouldn’t be upset and cry when symptoms hit and could manage with them by herself, there are many things you can do to keep the allergens on pets at bay but you have to be very diligent and it costs $, but like I said your child should definitely be old enough to communicate about her allergies and their severity. If you’d like me to elaborate or give more professional advice feel free to comment or message me privately I love to help and answer questions when it comes to pets:dog:
Find the pup a new home before it or anyone gets too attached. Allergies suck. I remember crying when i couldnt help my child. Pics on the right are before we knew what all he was allergic to. Cats and dogs were one of the highest.
I say if the pup is new. Hed be better off with another fam anyway.
What symptoms r u seeing ? Also how is she allergic to the dog but not the cat ?
Well you’re taking care of both I think it should be your say. Especially since your kid is allergic. Doesn’t he care about that? Wow!! It’s not like your giving up the puppy to be mean.
Puppy has to go and if dad don’t like them so can he
