I was just wondering if any mamas out there have any advice on how to deal with a baby’s acid reflux? My son is almost two months old and suffers from really severe acid reflux. No matter what I do, nothing seems to help him. Smaller, more frequent feedings, sitting him upright 30-40 minutes after feedings and burping him every half ounce. I’ve also tried plain formula by itself and 1/2 formula, and 1/2 breast milk. No matter what, he’s still spitting up at least half of what he eats. And it’s more of a projectile vomit than just spit-up. I brought him to the ER yesterday to make sure it wasn’t anything more severe like pyloric stenosis, which thankfully it’s not. They said it’s severe acid reflux. I feel terrible because his belly really hurts him, and nothing I do seems to help him. I’m really at a loss here.
Back when I was breastfeeding I had a similar issue with my son, I tried different diets no dairy etc. Finally I chewed tums after every single meal and it slowed it down to maybe when he burped, it also helped the gassy tummy. Eventually he grew out of the spit up stage all together, hope this helps!
Oh god im so sorry my first had this it was miserable i switched to nutramigen and it saved my life it all stopped
Go talk to his pediatrician.
I had to have my daughter on reflex meds for a little while. And we found a formula that worked too.
My son was this way and we had to find the right formula for him. Just see if they will switch the formula until you find one that he can use. Good luck mama.
My baby had this to the point where she threw up her formula and cried 24/7. Switching her to Similac for Spit Up is what saved us. Along with a prescription for Famotidine.
You need to speak with your pediatrician and ask about an anti acid medicine. My 3 month old takes 0.6 ml of famotidine 2 times a day. It has helped him tremendously. He’s a totally different baby now.
When my youngest grandson was born, he had severe acid reflux and a high ph. We spent a night at Children’s Hospital with a ph probe and all to get him diagnosed. Finally after several tries, Elecare to the rescue. Its expensive but it worked for him. Hes almost 2 now.
His pediatrician can guide you best. I’m sure they can make the proper recommendations.
But things you may want to ask about, and or look into, are bottles that help reduce air, and acid reflux, acid reflux drops/infant medication.
Talk to his doctor. They have medications and ways to help him. My little had it. Grew out around a year old.
Each baby is different. My daughter we added medicine to her formula and that helped a ton. It was the second tier of acid reflux medicine and I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called (my daughter is 14) we tried nutramigen and she wouldn’t do it. Whatever you do don’t let people tell you to start feeding them cereal before they are ready that didn’t help. I would honestly look into things you eat that could help the breast milk when breastfeeding. Also instead of plain formula to add I would look into gentle ease. That was amazing for my daughter but she also was super gassy.
Medicine and baby cereal but ask the dr first about the baby cereal. My son had it really bad. After u feed him lay him on his side 30 minutes
Small amount of crushed tums worked wonder for my daughter who had the same issues
I had to switch my daughters milk to Nutragen
My son had that too when he was a baby. Projectile vomit and all. Tried EVERYTHING! Would feed him 6oz, 4oz would come back up. I had to double feed him to make sure he was getting something into his belly. I switched him to formula; enfamil AR. Helped a lot. His doctor told me once he started crawling the muscle would tighten up and it would slow down a lot. He was right!
He could be lactose intolerant. Ask your dr.
Probiotics really helped both of my little ones. Couldn’t believe the difference it made
My daughter had severe reflux. I had to cut out all the dairy from my diet since I was breastfeeding. Eventually I lost my supply due to a surprise pregnancy and after trying several formulas Similac Alimentum was the best for her. She was also on omeprazole for 13 months long. The spitting continued but the omeprazole (prilosec) made sure she wasn’t hurting anymore. Please schedule an doctors visit asap and ask about omeprazole and a wedge for when sleeping❤.
My breastmilk was causing it in my daughter. My tonsils were severely infected and I passed my infection to her in my milk.
You need infant gaviscon… My grandson had it terrible and it helped enormously…
My oldest child had the worst reflux. Still does now at 18.
When he was a baby, I could only get him to sleep in his swing. Because it kept him partially upright.
My daughter had it too. I did 1/2oz every 1/2hr and kept her upright my second also had it we used prescription medication for him
My oldest nephew had it when he was a baby. He was put on the baby version of Zantac by his pediatrician (or some sort of baby version of antacid)
Talk w Dr. My Dr said to use oatmeal cereal make it soupy in her bottle w a bigger nipple on bottle. Tht seemed to help w the projectile . my daughter had it bad. She’s 18 n still having issues. Good luck.
Try goats milk both of 3 of my grands had it and this is what helped, of course check with your pediatrician first
My grand daughter just got over that. We used a belly warmer bought from Amazon. Ended up having to sit her up in a bouncer to feed her. Also bought a probiotic gas relief. Make sure the bottles are warm. Room temp is still too cold for baby! I still boil her water and let it sit. Once the breast milk was gone, we mixed, bananas, cereal and formula together. Apples seemed to help also.
Talk to your dr about medicine for reflux. My son ended up with damage to his trachea because they waited so long to treat his reflux.
Her daughter suffered from severe acid reflux from the time she was 3 weeks old until about 8 months old. We did everything you have done at the request of the doctor and when none of that worked and she was losing weight they actually prescribed her a medicine for acid reflux. We give it to her nightly and it worked. She’s now six and has no problem with acid reflux anymore.
What kind of formula? My daughter had reflux and was on AR before it was resolved… my other daughter was “reflux” → “happy spitter” and found out she has a dairy allergy
Talk to your pediatrician and get a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. They can prescribe reflux meds and also prescribe special formula if need be. You can move to a formula like nutramigen or alimentum to see if that helps. My daughter had reflux and it turned out to be a milk soy protein intolerance. She was put on neocate which is very broken down and thin so we’d have to thicken it just slightly with some rice cereal (under her drs orders). It made a world of difference. Special formulas can be pricy but you can get your insurance to cover them with the help of the GI doctor.
Take him to the doctor. My daughter had to be put on acid reflux meds. It doesn’t always help because all that the meds do is reduce the amount of stomach acid but it could make it less severe and make him less miserable. Also my daughter has to sleep at an angle. It’s not safe sleep approved but she has special medical conditions that her doctor gave us the ok for.
My son had that as a baby but problem was more severe he actually needed adenoids removed and tubes put in his ears, seek a second, third opinion of an ENT.
My two children had really bad reflux and I put rice cereal in their formula to thicken it also switched then to the gentle ease formula and still mixed cereal in it
I fought with a gastroenterologist to get my girl medicated at 1 yr old. But prior to that she slept straight up on me in a recliner. A swing and car seat worked for the first few months. It was tough, I did a rotation with my husband. I was with her until 4 am and slept until 7 when he went to work. I also had a 2 yr old at the time
My child had to feed and be placed in a non bounsey chair for 12-15 minutes.
I used Gaviscon for infants in my daughters bottles
We had to move to Soy formula and reflux medication! Also switched to Dr Browns bottles and that helped some. My son had it so severe he would choke in his sleep occasionally and it would scare me to death. Many sleepless nights. Once he was able to set up by himself it gradually began to get better!
We had to switch to soy formula for my son when he was a baby. He would projectile vomit after being fed before we switched to soy.
my daughter upchucked 24/7
she was diagnosed with a immature esophagus. She was born a month early.
so long as she gained weight …
and yes i tried everything and she slept on a tilt till she was almost a year. Talk to your doctor
carring with belly on your arm… head up… cradle head higher towel under the bed to make mattress inclined. all known to help
feel for you…had it with my baby too and put on soy too
My son has GERD. He had to be put on a feeding tube as an infant. It’s gotten a lot better with time, and now he’s on the feeding tube because his oral aversion is so bad bc of how bad the reflux was, but we still use elecare and pediasure (if you switch to a specialty formula definitely see if your GI doctor can write a prescription for insurance to cover it, it’s definitely not cheap, and also omeprazole. He also is on erythramicin which is an antibiotic but it’s also used to help with gastric emptying, basically helping the food move through his stomach quicker to keep it down.
He’s 3 now and we have it managed for the most part but it took some work to find the right combo of meds and formula. DEFINITELY insist on a referral to a gastroenterologist because most pediatricians just really aren’t very helpful when it comes to gut issues, in my experience.
Enfamil A.R. is specifically made for babies with acid reflux. It helped so much with our baby and she eventually grew out of it. Our doctor told us not to mix cereal with any formula in any bottle. Every doctor is different but ours believes cereal should only be consumed from a spoon.
Switch to a sensitive formula I also used gripe water as needed along with my daughter’s meds… fortunately it’s something they outgrow as they are able to sit up more and able to eat food
Gripe water and mylicon drops…
Change your baby bottle. It’ll help. Try Dr. Brown’s.
My daughter had acid reflux at 3 weeks old and she’s allergic to my breast milk. I tried few formulas until I found the right one Soy formula.
My daughter had silent reflux and she was prescribed Zantac by the pediatrician. She used it for a few months and then grew out of it.
Get him into a gastroenterologist ASAP. They can give you SAFE thickeners, or meds if necessary. My little man was on Omeprazol from the time he was 4 months until little after 1, and he’s almost 4 and still has pretty bad reflux once in a while.
They gave my baby pepcaid (spelling?) it works awesome!
Talk to your pediatrician about nutramigen
I’m dealing with this right now with my newborn
All my babies had to have this. Nothing else worked.
I’ve heard baby pro biotics help. My grandson had a similar situation and was told his digestive system was still adjusting. He’s 3 and 1/2 months now and is doing much better. They also put him on a specialized formula made by Abbott. Prayers for a speedy resolve to your little guys digestive problem. ((((HUGS❤))))
my daughter had acid reflux prior around 3-4 months and spoke with doctor. I explained her symptoms and insisted on some medication. the first was a nasty mint flavored acid reducer and I couldn’t stand the flavor myself. I did some research and found another acid reducer approved for infants that could be flavored with bubblegum, cost extra but what a difference it made for her especially at night, she quit puking and only stayed on it for a short time
Soy formula with Gerber rice ground into a powder…about 1 gormula scoop…ONLY thing that worked for my 3 kiddos
Bless All of you for sincerely sharing your same experiences to help this baby & Mama. Who knows how many others read & benefited from Y’All.
My son was a puke-er, we had him on similac alimentum. It helped
We had to switch to allimentum formula. Started out with soy because our 5 boys needed soy our daughter however couldn’t handle it it was extremely rough on her belly:sob: we switched her formula and with hours there was a different baby, she gets colicky from time to time but NOTHING like it was
My doctor had me add rice cereal to the formula but that was 13 years ago. Maybe ask your pediatrician to make sure it’s safe.
Probiotics and a chiropractor.
Before adding ANYTHING to a bottle other than formula or breastmilk PLEASE get a recommendation from your pediatrician. Cereal in bottles is so insanely unsafe and is only recommended in extreme circumstances anymore. It poses a huge choking hazard for little ones
Enfamil A.R. worked wonders
My son has it really bad. We put him on nutramigen formula paired with famotidine prescribed by the pediatrician. We also add one teaspoon of rice per bottle and it has helped tremendously. He still spits up some but nowhere near as bad as before and he’s no longer uncomfortable with the spitting up
Remember whatever you eating it goes thru your breast milk. Try rubbing peppermint essential oil in his belly button n between his rib cage. He could be lactose intolerant too so ask doctor for a recommendation on best soy formula. Try having him elevated while he sleeps too cause when flat on back acid reflux is horrible n the acid goes into the throat n burns it.
Most medicines don’t work. Both my sons had severe acid reflux. They HAVE to sleep upright. If you’ve ever had severe heartburn you know that. I would let my son nap on his tummy, literally the only way he could sleep. Its probably gonna flare up at around 4 months but should start to get better a little at a time after that. I did half and half Enfamil A.R. and regular Enfamil neuropro as full A.R. just made him constipated and didn’t necessarily help any more than half and half. Upright 24/7.
You can get anti reflux milk and you can also ask the doctor for gaviscon to put in babys milk also check out other symptoms if baby has any for cmpa (cows milk protine allergy) as most babys that have reflux are usually allergic to cows milk 2 out of 3 of my kids are cmpa my youngest is 9 months and since the doctor prescribed her aptimil pepti 1 (cmpa milk) at 2 weeks old she was much much more better she still has reflux now so she has gaviscon in her milk but you need to find the balance in with the gaviscon as it can make them constipated xx
Gave my son goat milk and problem solved
Try changing his formula sitting him up a little when he feeding try booking him into the doctor’s and get baby gaviscone but it’s only prescription there’s infocol which is also good
I also found rubbing the tummy and also massaging his lower back then patting up top of the back holding him over the knee and gently burping him that way too
My son was eventually prescribed Zantac for acid reflux and we had to change his formula before finding something that helped him. He was on Similac Almentium until he started drinking milk. He finally started to outgrow acid reflux around a year old. By the time we were switching him to milk, he stopped needing medicine. You can’t get Zantac anymore, but they still my Omperazole(Prilosec) or Famotidine(Pepcid) in liquid form for babies and children.
My daughter was prescribed medication as an infant. It was horrible for her. She just cried and cried and so did I.
My son and daughter both had it horrible. They both did prescription Zyrtec for maybe the first couple months and a wedge for incline in bassinet. All approved by their dr. See what yours reccomends. As soon as I could i got them
Off it though.
I had to change my youngest to soy formula and that solved the projectile vomiting issue for him
Lip/tongue tie evaluation. Chances are that the little one is swallowing too much air while eating due to ties causing inadequate sealing when drinking. If truly necessary, goat milk formula is suppose to be easier for babies to digest. Also get that baby to a chiropractor!
My daughter didn’t have it really bad like some I’ve read but I put some rice cereal in her bottle and did gripe water and milk of magnesia which all seemed to help.
They put my son (years ago, he’s 26 now) on Metaclopromide for his severe reflux. He had the same projectile vomiting after eating. They have since said that medication is not good but it worked for him back then. I also used dark Karo syrup in his bottles. It helped his vomiting as well as his stomach problems.
Talk to your pediatrician. He or she will ask several questions and determine if you need to make a formula change or medicine. My youngest is 5 months old and he’s been on prescription pepcid since he was 2 months old per doctor twice a day…we didn’t have to change formula. When my son would spit up, it wasn’t curdled, his stools weren’t curdled so he didn’t have an intolerance to his formula, just acid reflux. It doesn’t necessarily mean your baby has an allergy, milk intolerance or needs soy. Your pediatrician will be the biggest help
My daughter was put on Prevacid. (11 years ago) it was a dissolvable tablet we popped right into her bottle. And also added cereal to the nutramigin brand formula
My daughter had it really bad as a baby. She has other health issues as well. She ended up being on reflux meds for the first couple years of her life that made a HUGE difference. She was able to stop them around 4 years old and now that she’s hitting puberty she’s had to start taking them again. Might try switching to soy or sensitive tummy formula and avoiding lactose in your diet for the beast milk. That’s what I did with my son and it helped ALOT without the needs for medication.
Take him to pediatric gastro dr. Also occupational therapy. My son saw both. They helped us find the best formula and bottles. He was also on prescription meds and had to sleep on a big wedge we strapped him too. It was called a Tucker Sling and Wedge.
They have a lot of different formulas. Go to his pediatrician they can give you samples of them so you’re not wasting tons of money
Get Nutramigen formual made by Enfamil. It was a life saver for my 2 youngest. They had horrible acid reflux and when the pediatrician recommended it bc it was for a cows milk allergy. The acid reflux and colic stop immediately! It worked wonders and my babies slept through night with no problems ever again.
Ranitidine, alimentum formula (which insurance eventually paid for), and I put that baby to sleep in a swing… I slept for 5 hours after 3 and a half months of screaming and puking and it was life changing…!! good luck
Does your baby have explosive diarrhea also? If so it’s an allergy to milk. If you’re on wic you’ll have to go to the pediatrician and explain it to them if they agree that’s the problem they’ll write you a prescription to give to wic and they will switch you to soy or sensitive formula
Meds or cereal in bottle.
Cereal helped mine alot. Still helps actually. He also takes acid meds now cuz he spits up/pukes with plain formula
My son used to spit up exactly like that. There’s a formula called for baby’s who spit up frequently. I think it’s buy enfamil It did wonders
i think we did plant based formula with a as bit of rice cereal, prescription for acid reflux, it helped slightly. i couldn’t have more excited for solid food
My sons formula was changed about 6 times and finally we settled with nutramigen but it still wasn’t helping 100%. He was then prescribed Zantac which helped a bit. I was also told to never have him sitting flat, always keep his head elevated. Hoping the best for you and your baby Mama acid reflux is the worst
My Daughter 30 Years ago had Grade 3 Reflux. She was put on Drops. I also had to follow a STRICT Feeding Schedule for Almost a Year. She was also Lactose Intolerant. With also a 1 year and 4 year Old, it was Sooo Stressful AND Exhausting. After I fed her , she had to Stay at an Angle for 2 hrs without lying down, so as to NOT get the Reflux. You Should talk to the Pediatrician about Something Similar to this and See what their Advice is. Good Luck.
His/her pediatrician should be able to prescribe something. Try adding a little bit of rice cereal to the bottle to thickin it up. I had to do this with my 4th
Have them evaluated for lip/tongue tie. My son had really bad reflux until 13 months old within 3 days of his procedure all the problems went away!
My baby had similar issues although not as severe. I switched to similac pro sensitive formula and gave him a probiotic (gerber soothe- this was life changing! ) in his bottle every morning. Burped him halfway through feedings and sat him up for at least 30 min after feedings. He improved tremendously! Hope you find a solution to your little ones issues!
My baby has a cows milk protein intolerance. No dairy for me. If i even have a slice of cheese on a cheeseburger, she breaks out in hives around her mouth and screams for 2 days until she has diarrhea for 2 days. No dairy, sleeping at an incline, holding upright 30 min after eating and reflux meds have greatly helped her.
Both of my kids were prescribed meds. I also put cereal in their bottles. It didn’t make it stop completely but it definitely helped!
The pediatrician can prescribe meds for your young baby that will help with the acid reflex… prayers
