When do I start feeding my baby food?

Listen to your doctor?

I started when she was interested and my doctor said that was fine if they are interested go for it

I started at 4 ish months with mine. Formula just wasn’t enough for her mind you this was 12 years ago…baby cereals, mashed potatoes and by 6 months she was on baby foods and ate just about anything I’d give her. She was not a picky eater and is healthy as can be with a great appitite still 12 years later…You know what you’re doing…go with your gut mama! Good luck!

A baby’s stomach is not developed fully for the transition from milk to food until about 6 months. She is probably just curious about what you’re doing and baby’s just make that sound. My son is 4 months and does it while watching closely to us eating, but he is just very curious. He will even smile when he sees us eating and looking at him. She doesn’t need the food until she’s 6 months and I’d especially follow the docs advice on that. A lot of people will say “I did it and they were fine” which is all cool. But in all reality, we don’t see what’s going on from the inside. Just wait the 2 more months.

Every baby is diff. 2 of mine didn’t start til 6 months. 1 started at 4. 1 started at 5

My sons pediatrician told me he was ready at 4 months and gave me the green light, her idea! And she was right he loves food

We started at like 3 months or so. He would literally launch himself onto our plates at dinner time :joy::joy:

I gave her food when mine was wanting my food.

My sons dr also said to wait until 6 months but I started putting baby cereal in his formula bottles at a month old because he had acid reflux so bad and he could barely ever keep the milk down and that helped so much he hardlt ever threw up anymore after that and then i started him on baby foods at 4 months started with like applesauce and then pears and every couple of weeks i would introduce something new along with different soft table foods like mashed potatoes and stuff like that

My youngest we started at 4 months because formula just wasn’t doing it for her. My oldest was 6 months

My son was 3 months when we started him on stage 1 veggies baby food

My doctor just told me 4 months for my 3rd baby she’s 2 1/2 months now. i will start her then. My others sams

My youngest is almost 1y. She has been eating what we eat since she was 6 months old. Before 6 months we gave her softer foods we would eat. We never did baby food.

I gave my ten month olds a piece of bread at a restaurant the other day. I started at 5 months with them

I started both my boys on cereal in their formula at 1 month mostly at night. They slept better because they were full longer. Actual table food was introduced when they showed interest. For my oldest (who is 30 now) it was about 4 months. For my youngest (who is 27 now) it was 6 months. Go with your gut mama.

My dr said 6 months, but my son was also drinking 4oz every 2-3 hours out of the womb. We started at 3 months with stage one fruits and veggies. Then switched to baby led weaning around 6 months

It’s really important not to introduce solids before 6 months plus signs of readiness (sitting unassisted, loss of gag reflex, interest in food). Their gut is not ready for food and their nutrients really need to be coming from breast milk/formula.

Baby will definitely be interested in your food before then but it’s really important to wait! We started baby led weaning with both of our kids around 6/8 months. Small finger shaped slices of whatever we were eating. It’s great because they eat what you eat, you don’t have to feed them who knows what out of a jar and they learn independence.

It varies for each baby is different some @ 3 mos or 4 mos…

“Why listen to my doctor when random Facebook moms say otherwise”

If they can sit and hold their head up then they can eat according to some drs. Doctors also will recommend cereal for young babies for acid reflux.

6 months is the recommended age.

6 months with my first
5 months with my second

old school momma here, breastfed each until 2. They ate table foods when they started reaching with their hands to the table to eat. I suppose that’s “baby led” these days
We did offer our garden pureed veggies such as squash sweet potatoes etc around 6- months. I think they had some smashed avocado around 5.
Trust your gut. you know your baby better than anyone else!
my youngest was literally running at 7 months. I wasn’t going to stop her from trying foods.

3 months is when I started

6 months with both my kids.

Both my kids had cereal in their formula around 3 months cause they were slow in gaining weight and it help them feel full longer

4-5 months. Start with veggies first.

3 months with baby cereal, 4 months with purees, and about 6 months with table food. No way could I have done only formula until 6 months. He would have either starved to death or needed a bottle every hour…

My ped encouraged to go ahead and start at 3 months at her 3 month check up. She wasn’t interested but she said it’s just to get her working on the motion to get the food to the back of her mouth. She is almost 5 months now and still isn’t interested :joy:

4 months with my daughter (now 6). Was recommended to start with yogurt, apple sauce, etc…in very very small bites (seriously, pea sized)

We started at 6 months with my 3 kids.

Just a quick reading that might answer some of your questions ( in my opinion always follow your Dr’s advice)

4 months… My pediatrician said as soon as he shows interest in food start solids…

4 months with rice cereal, 6 months pureed baby foods.

When readiness signs are met

As soon as they mimicked me eating.

I started teaspoons before breastfeeding at 4 months and full meals between breastmilk at 6 months

6 months when the dr recommended

With my oldest I was pushed to feed him food at just weeks old. “a little cereal helps him sleep.” Then at 2 mos or so “soft food like mashed potatoes won’t hurt him”. I went against the Dr out of pressure. I regret it. He’s an adult with GI issues. He will spontaneously throw up or be constipated for days. Cramps, nausea etc. That’s all because I fed him early. Drs say 6 mos because that’s when the stomach muscles usually develop enough to digest the food. Rule of thumb is when they can sit up on their own they’re ready for the spoon. With my younger 2 I waited. They don’t have the issues their brother has.

4 months with little things like rice cereal then at 6 months we did everything purĂŠe

Was there a reason he wanted you to wait? I thought 4 months or when they show interest is the standard?

I started atound 4 or 5 months to give my son the baby cereal,

Baby cereal at 4 months and 6 months for baby food

Clicking of the tongue isnt a sign of readiness. & baby cereals are just empty calories and you shouldnt give them to your babies.
I suggest waiting til 6m and waiting for all signs of being ready for foods and do baby led weaning.

We did at 4 months with my 3rd. She was holding her head up good, watching us eat. She’s almost 8 months and eats like a champ

4 months is ok. Start with rice cereal for a month or so and introduce one new food a week.

Child feed that baby… especially if she’s showing interest. One month is not gonna make a difference if you wait but by starting now will most likely be better for her… I am an infant teacher and I see a lot of parents are skipping cereal and going straight to puréed fruits and veggies …just make sure to introduce one at a time allowing a couple days in between to make sure there are no allergies…

I have been reading up on BLW feeding and everything says once baby is interested in food like watching you eat, etc. And able to sit up on their own.

Definitely wait till 6 months thats best for them and if she is interested in eating (which they won’t be anymore once we start giving them food :woman_facepalming:t2: lol) then u can just let her lick lil bit and try not to eat in front of her.

Also look into BLW its amazing!

All the best!!

As soon as mine could sit up and support themselves completely. Of course I am old school we didn’t have Mommy groups and blogs. Baby was hungry we fed it.

4mo with both of them. One is now 5yo and the other 2yo.

I started at 4 months with ALL OF MINE ! And there doctors have all said that when a baby becomes interested in food it’s okay to give them the baby first starters at 4 months but no less ! If she’s interested and mimicking you eating then definitely feed that baby !!!:blue_heart:

Whenever the baby can handle little bits of soft foods all babies are different.

I don’t get where people think 4mo is okay. Why the rush? Wait until at least 6mo not sooner. At 4 months your babies digestive system isn’t mature yet.

Doctors say 4 months with rice cereal as it has less allergens as long as your baby can support its head shows interest in food and you use a spoon not a bottle so they don’t get too much at once start with puréed and slowly going more gritty as the months go on still doing formula or breast milk until one year of age. - your pediatrician may think your baby is not quite ready yet due to one of these reasons - but listen to doctors and medical studies and your pediatrician not a bunch of judgement moms on Facebook

I think we did mashed peas at 4 months, I mean try and as long as she doesn’t choke. You know how to lay her with her face down on your thighs and pat her back if she has trouble right?

I started at 5.5 months with all signs of readiness.

Everyone complaining about 4 months. Did you know they make baby food stage 1 for 4 months to 6 months?? It literally says supported sitter. Which means if they can hold their head up and sit with assistance without falling over all the time, than you can feed them. Just saying…stage 2 is 6 months and up…why make stage 1 for no reason?

Started at around 5-6 months. I did some purees but mostly soft finger foods. Avacado, banana, potatoes. Did some baby cereal but quickly stopped because it constipated baby.

3-4 months with both of mine

6 months with baby led weaning. My now 16 month old had pancakes, bacon and eggs for her first meal. My 4 year old had steak and potatoes.

With my first daughter I did it by the book. Nothing but formula for the 1st 6 month and feed baby food according to the peds charts. She had reactions to almost every veggie and rashes. Second child started on cereal at 4 months and baby food shortly after, she ate every thing and no problems at all. Go figure! Each child is different.

They say baby led weaning around 6 months!

And also food before one is just for fun!!

I started around 2/3 months but that’s because he had severe acid reflux that even meds wouldn’t help. Small amounts (like literally one or two bites) before his bottle stopped the vomiting though. But only did this as advice from his pediatrician.

I started at 4. I say when they show interest they are ready

I waited till around 6 months.

I started at 4 months with baby rice with a little banana in. But only only doctors advice, to help with filling him up as a very hungry baby who’s allergic to cows milk, his formula just wasnt enough. I would definitely consult your doc first as we dont know if your lil one was prem or has any issues, goodluck x

my dr told me 4 months!

All my kids I started at 4 months. On my recent child I had in 2020 the dr and wic was telling me it to give them baby food rolls 6 months. But I didn’t listen! I have 5 kids and all the others started at 4 months and did perfectly fine. If your baby can tolerate the baby food without choking then I say go for it

6 weeks with rice cereal and just progressed from there

I started mine on table foods when they had complete control of their heads and could roll from back to front and front to back completely on their own. They were both 4 months old. I had a baby food grinder that I used for both of them and would use that on whatever I was eating.

The day I brought them home from the hospital

At 2 months I started cereal and 4 months we started foods

Research baby led weaning. It’s what we did and made mealtime so much easier, we started at 6mo

They recommend waiting until 6 months, to add anything but formula or breast milk because, a babies digestive system is not developed all the way and it can also cause issues down the road with their digestive tract and other things. It’s also not recommended yo start any food, until your baby has full neck and head control.

I waited until my kids were 6 months old because according to a bunch of articles I’ve read kids who are exposed to food before 6 months are more likely to develop food allergies

Our doctor said said between 4 and 6 months when they start being interested in food this was 11+ years ago. But I think even now it’s when they start acting interested

6 months per GI doctor’s recommendations.

When’s my daughter started acting interested in what we were eating I let her have a little taste of something simple like mashed potatoes or applesauce and things like that stuff that she couldn’t choke on now she’s 10 months out and will eat anything you give her

I also used these for both of mine

The reason it’s recommended that solids (pureed foods) are started at 6 months is because children start sitting around that age which means they have better swallowing abilities, and stronger abdominal muscles to assist defecation…
I started my child at 5months because she was refusing milk and drank better after she has a few tastes of solid food…
The website momtastic was a great resource for me as to which foods to introduce first and how to introduce solids and so children enjoy eating
