Do babies born at 37 weeks need the NICU?

My son was 37 weeks he came home less then 24 hours after he was born

My second was born at 36 1/2 weeks. She was only 6.1 lbs, but she was perfectly healthy. No nicu needed. We were home in 48 hours. I would ask your doctor if they have any concerns about your babyā€™s health if u deliver early.

Had my son at 37 weeks and he was a healthy 8 lb baby.

Iā€™m an insulin dependant diabetic and my daughter was born at 36 weeks she was absolutely fine so no nicu and weighed a health 8.9lbs x

Our little one was born a day or two shy of 38 weeks, and he was perfectly fine and healthy

My grandson was born at 35+4. 6 pounds 8 ounces. Thankfully, he needed no nicu time.

Im a type 1 diabetic. My girls were born at 34 weeks and 35 weeks respectively. Although they were bigā€¦diabetics have big babies, they had to spend a month each in Nicu.

Had my oldest at 32 wks. They gave me steroids to prepare her lungs. She is now 29 and doing very well. She was considered a well premie

With my first I was was induced at 37 weeks for medical reasons and my daughter only had issues with jaundice.
Obviously this is scary and new for you, but really your going to be in the best place you could be (a hospital) and babies are born all the time early. These are things the hospital deals with regularly. They are prepared for this. Try to stay calm, try to stay positive  good luck momma

Depends on the baby really. My baby was born 36 + 4 and he did not need the NICU.

Two of my babies were 35 weeks and came home with me.

My son was born at 37 weeks and didnā€™t go to the NICU. My daughter was born at 37 weeks and was in the NICU due to low birth weight.

I gave birth at 36wks,my second was 36wks 3 days n my 3rd was born at 35wks none of my kids had to go to the NICU but I also knew Iā€™d have premature babies w my 2nd n 3rd so they gave me the shot that strengthens their lungs around 32wks

No, not usually. Iā€™ve had 2 35 weekers one who did go to Nicu and one who didnā€™t. It just depends. During the first one they tried to induce me and I was so close so they waited until they couldnā€™t wait anymore and it was an emergency C-section. So she went to Nicu but my next one, my water broke early and no Nicu.

35 week IUGR babe with a congenital heart defect, no NICU, latched like a champ! My first two were 36 + 3 and 36 + 4. This isnā€™t stupid! Worthwhile questions. Good luck MaMa you got this!

My son was born at 36 weeks and didnt spend any time in the NICU I did do an extra hour of skin to skin because his breathing was a little rapid. But other than that he was great

I went into labour naturally at around 36 weeks. And was considered full term, we did end up in NICU do to some seperate non related issues. I had pneumonia at the time so he had some fluid in his lungs. But 24 hours later he was just fine and the fluid had cleared up for him without complication

Not as long as theyā€™re healthyā€¦
5/6 of mine were born at 37 weeks or earlier ā€¦ the only one who went to NICU was born at 35 weeks and had a bowel infection

My son didnā€™t get put in nicu. He was born at 37 weeks but he was in the hospital for an extra few days. My youngest was 37 weeks and nothing extra for her. My oldest was 40 weeks and had a whole in her lung so she went to nicu

Usually no a baby is considered term at 37 weeks unless the baby has complications during delivery or a health condition.

My son was born at 37 weeks exactly via c-section & we only stayed 1 extra day due to him failing the car seat test.

It really depends on the baby and you wont know anything until he/she is born. But just so you know, my twins were born at 34 wks one weighting 6lb the other 5lb and both healthy no NICU and got discharged with me from the hospital. Good luck mama!

Iā€™m telling you now, yes your baby will have to stay in the NICU. How long is gonna be the question. I had gestational diabetes, it wasnā€™t bad enough to where I needed insulin just diet control and she had to go to the NICU just for that reason. my daughter was born at 36 weeks. They have to stay in the NICU because they canā€™t maintain their glucose levels by themselves. They have been getting all this sugar from you and so their levels drop drastically once that cord is cut and they have to be monitored because their levels can just rollercoaster until they can maintain it themselves, so they watch their levels and step in when they need to if they get to high or low.
Also because of the gestational diabetes my daughter couldnā€™t work up the energy to eat, she would latched really well and then would fall asleep after 5 minutes of feeding and because of it she stayed in the NICU for 26 days even though nothing else was wrong with her. They have to eat everything by mouth for 48 hours straight before they will release them.
You never know though every baby and situation is different but just be prepared, if your gestational diabetes is bad enough to where you need insulin then I would count on more then likely having a NICU stay.
Btw My daughter is 4 months old now, so my experience was pretty recent.
I will keep you in my prayers! Good luck mama.

35 weeks with twins. One of my boys died so they did a csection. My other son was 3ib and they sent us home the next day. No nicu, I think it just depends how the baby is doing. I think you should be good though

I had my son at 37 weeks and he spent 2 nights in the nicu due to not eating well (he lost too much weight between birth and 2 days old) and not maintaing his body temp on his own.

I had 2 children at 37.5 weeks due to health problems. Labour was induced at 37 wks because that is presumed a safe time. Due to other health problems both babies were in hospital for a week (blood transfusions/RH incompatibility) but otherwise were very healthy. Although I did receive a shot midway through pregnancy to develop their lungsā€¦knowing they would be born early. Sorry this is not really helpful because of other underlying factorsā€¦ But I presume, through my experience, that most times a baby is not extremely high risk if born at 37.5 weeks.

My daughter was induced at 37 weeks. She was a little jaundiceā€¦ but thatā€™s about it. It really depends on the baby.

Really depends I was born at 27 weeks exactly and was over 6 pounds breathing on my own and that was the 90sā€¦ 36 weeks is full term so hopeing for the best

I had my second baby at 38weeks and heā€™s done great. Great latch, and feeding and he was born at a healthy weight.

No my babies didnā€™t we were out in two days my last two

My high risk doc decided to do My csection at 36 weeks because I was all maxed out on Insulinā€¦baby was born at almost 10lbs and healthy. She did need the NICU later that evening because she was not urinating or having any bowel movements so she had some GI complications but otherwise, she would have not needed the NICU. All depends on the weight and health of the baby when bornā€¦they could sometimes keep them in.NICU the first 48hrs to make sure their sugar isnā€™t dropping since they are so use to all the sugar inside the Mommy. Best wishes!! All will be fine.

My little guy was born at 39 weeks 4 days and had to be in the nicu for 5 days due to a collapsed lung after birth. It really depends on the situation.

I had my son at 37w and was 5 lbs 5 oz and he wasnā€™t in the NICU. He had very little jaundice but that was it.

Both my kids were 36/37 weeks. 1 boy 1 girl. Both were fine, but girls lungs develop faster than boys and every child is different. I wish you and your LO the best.

Both my babies were born at 36 wks neither of them needed time in the NICU

My baby was born by c section at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia. She weighed a little over 6 lbs and was perfectly healthy, no need for the NICU or an extended stay. My doctor said 37 weeks is actually considered to be full term, but they would check her over just to make sure she would be fine. Breastfeeding was a little bit harder for her for the first couple weeks, but I kept in touch with a lactation consultant, and she is 4 weeks old now, and nursing like a champ!

My daughter was born at 35 weeks. She was tiny 4 lbs 5oz but healthy and did not need the nicu. While every baby is different, if your doctor feels itā€™s safe, I wouldnā€™t be too concerned. Good luck! And congrats on your soon to be new bundle of joy!

My son was born at 33 weeks and 3 days via emergency C. I was terrified because for my husband and I 35 weeks was the magic number. The doctors assured him it was ok. My son was in the NICU at Monmouth Medical. (I delivered there because if the situation presented itself I wanted to be in the same place as my baby). He stayed an extra week and a half. We celebrate his 4th Birthday in a few days. Hope my story puts you at ease. Congratulations and god bless.

They are considered full term at 37 weeks. Both of my babies were born at 37 weeks and neither had to go to the nicu. My daughter had a heart valve that had not closed all the way yet giving her a small heart murmur but it had closed on itā€™s on within 24 hours and she was fine

Gestational diabetics often give birth to big babies who are initially unable to regulate their blood sugar. That being true, it is often necessary for a stay in the NICU. Not due to prematurity, but necessary for continual monitoring of glucose levels. They often need IV fluids and frequent feedings. NICU nurse for 20 years.

I had my 2and child at 37 weeks, due to preeclampsia. They said technically 37 weeks is full term but it is also not guaranteed that they are ready. My son was not and his lungs were not developed he spent a week in the NICU a few of those days he was intubated. Luckily he got better quick. He is a happy and healthy 5 yo now

Even if you go into labor now being diabetic your baby is probably already close to a decent weight and might go to nicu for a couple of days just making sure baby isnt diabetic aswell , being informed and asking questions is always good just dont frett to much and relax as much as possible which will be best for you and baby. NICU is there for the best care for baby and your recovery. Your an experienced Mom and you will be fine. hugs and luv to you and your family.

It depends how healthy they are when they are born. Typically no they wouldnā€™t need nicu unless something was wrong. My daughter was born right at 38 weeks I had GD and she was small 6lbs but she was fine. Sometimes those ultrasounds saying how much they weigh are not accurate they could be bigger then it says.

Depends on how developed the lungs are, if eating well, maintaining body temp etc. My youngest was born at 35 1/2 wks and did not need to spend any time in NICU or any extra time in hospital.

Both my babies were 36 weeks and some odd days. One in the NICU for three weeks one for 4 months. Its really going to depend on the babyā€¦boys develop a little slower in the lung department there could be some other development or feeding issues but know if your baby has to be in the NICU they will be getting the best care. NICY nurses are angels truly.

You are considered full term at 37 weeks, a baby can come at anytime and should be okay. Sometimes there are complications with labor and delivery that might require a NICU stay but not always.

My daughter was born naturally at 37 weeks and she was perfect. Didnā€™t need NICU and latched from the moment they gave her to me. She was 6 pounds 8 oz when she was born. I went to the doctor the day before and there were no signs of labor and the next day my water broke. 4 hours later she was born.

It really all depends on your babyā€¦I had a 8lb 2oz baby born at 39 weeks who had to be in the NICU for a week because his lungs werenā€™t fully developed, he had jaundice, 2 holes in his heart, and failure to eat ā€¦good luck even if your baby does have to be in the NICU Iā€™m sure it will be fine

My first one was induced at 37 week. He was healthy and we went home. The second one I went in labor at 32 weeks and we did go to the NICU. If your baby is healthy 37 week is not too early

My son was born at 37 weeks he was fine other than his bilirubin because of our blood types he was 6 lb 13 oz and perfectly healthy they induced me with my daughter at 39 weeks because I was showing signs of preeclampsia and she had the bilirubin also all my kids are a positive and Iā€™m o positive Iā€™m also currently pregnant 34 weeks with gestational diabetes and my dr said babies born at 37 weeks due just fine

Both my babies were born at 37 weeks, both came on their own and were about 9 lbs and were perfectly healthy. No NICU stay

My son was born 6 weeks early and was perfectly fine. Was also given the steroid injections for his lungs. No ICU
Good luck and God Bless

My daughter was born at 37 weeks and she was perfect. She weighed almost 6 pounds and didnt require any special treatment.

3 of my 7 kids were born at 37 weeks, 2 were born at 36 weeks, 1 at 38 and 1 at 39. Iā€™m a type one diabetic and have multiple other high risks. None have ever needed NICU time and 37 weeks is not considered pre mature. All of my babies got to go home with me.

I have a daughter born at 35 weeks and was perfectly healthy. My other one was born at 34 weeks and spent 2 weeks in the nicu. My niece was 40 weeks and spent 2 days in the nicu. It just depends on the child

I had my twins at exactly 37 weeks, and we went home together with no issues. Iā€™m sure it depends on other factors also.

I had my twins at 32.5 weeks no NICU and I had one at 37 weeks and no NICU. It depends on how you labour and how baby reacts. Donā€™t stress your self out if you have any other questions please ask your doctor. Please remember we are all different and birth differently so keep that in mind. Good luck and congratulations on your new little arrival :cupid:

It really depends on the baby. My youngest daughter was born at 33 weeks and was never in NICU. She was 6 lbs. As long as the weight and lungs are good and the baby is eating ok then it should not have to be there

I was induced at 37 weeks with my first and he was completely healthy, 6lbs 11oz 19 inches long never spent anytime in NICU we went home in 2 days. But everybodyā€™s experience is different.

I think it depends on the baby. My daughter was late and in the NICU for 10 days. I would think anything past 36 weeks your chances go down because by then they are developed enough for the most part.

Not necessarily. My son was born at 38 weeks, he was fine, was never in the NICU, my daughter was born at 33 weeks, was in the NICU, was never on oxygen. She was 3 lbs 15 oz. She was in the NICU for 2 weeks, mainly for observation and learning to suck and swallow and gain weight. Your little one should be fine.

My son was just born on the 18th of last month. It was a scheduled csection at 37 weeks. He did not need the NICU at all. He was just put on oxygen for a few hours in the nursery while I was in recovery. He has been thriving since the day he was born. He is now rolling over on his own and scooting.

I also had pregestational diabetes with my last baby and went into labor at 36 weeks and had a natural birth and had bo complications although i was never able to breastfeed cuz his mouth was too small and my nipple was too big. We stayed in the hospital the normal 2 days and he is now a healthy happy rambunctious 16 month old!

They should give you a shot to mature the babies lungs. My daughter was born 37 weeks 3 days and was just small, otherwise perfectly healthy.

36 weeks is full term. The baby should be fine being born at 36. Both my boys were 37 weeks gestation. They were healthy and a good weight. One of them tried to come at about 18 weeks. My doctor gave me a medicine to hold off labor that I took everyday for 19 weeks and when I was almost 37 weeks he said I could stop taking it. I had my biggest baby a few days later. He was 8ā€™13oz and 21inches long. He is 25 now and heā€™s healthy and happy. So yes itā€™s usually safe to give birth at 36week

My son was born at 38 and I had gestational diabetes as well. He did not need the NICU. Every baby is different.

My daughter was born at 37 weeks and considered a late premieā€¦ she only weighed 4 lbs and 12 ounces. She had to be in nicu for a week, due to eating difficulties.

It depends on the babies lungs and how developed they are but likely they will give meds to speed up the development of the lungsā€¦ my youngest was born c section at 37 weeks and they kept saying his lungs would be too immature but he was screaming when he was born and they said nope! His lungs are fine and he was my healthiest baby!!!

I had my daughter at 37 weeks via c section. She was frank breech and I was on hospital bed rest from 32 weeks on for low fluid. 37 weekers are 50/50 with acting like a preemie. Unfortunately mine did end up in CHOPS nicu. But not all 37 week babies do!

My daughter was born a month early and she was fine. We stayed in the hospital a few extra days but she did not need the NICU

Had my daughter at 38 weeks, prediabetic. Her fsbs at birth was 19. They did check her sugar often, until they knew she was stable. She was with me the whole time.

My niece was born at 36 weeks and went home the next day. She was 5lbs 5oz. So it depends how big the baby is and if they need help breathing

I had my daughter at 35 weeks was fine she was only 5 lbs though but every baby is different because the last weeks are when their lungs and stuff and getting fully developed

All babies are different but my 37 week born baby went home with us the next day we just had to come in for some heel pokes to monitor jaundice levels.

Both my children were born in the 37th week. My oldest, 7# 9.9oz was 37+4 and my youngest was at 37. Theyā€™re both amazing. My youngest 5# 4oz had some unforeseen issues with his breathing but otherwise healthy. I birthed my second child too fast which interfered with the way labor can squeeze the fluids out of their lungs, and meconium was present. He was only in the nicu for 8 days and released. I struggled thru my second pregnancy with many things.
Iā€™d do it all over again if I could! I have pcos, so my babies are pure gifts to me!

38 wks is now considered early term but still term. Unless there are issues with baby they should be more than fine and not need a NICU stay. Iā€™m a Mom of 6 . 1 of which were born early at 33 wks 4 days and the last was at 38 wks and was 4lbs 15oz all mine were under 7lbs

My oldest was born at 37 weeks and she was fully developed and had no real problems she was just small due to other complications from the pregnancy

One thing you shoul be prepared for is them watching babies sugar levels and starting a glucose iv drip right away.

My son was 8lbs 2oz at 37 weeks and healthy. I hope all is well for you and your baby mama!

I had my first at 37 weeks ! No nicu perfectly fine

My eldest was born at 36.4 and she didnā€™t immediately go in NICU. Because her weight was ā€˜justā€™ right. She ended up in the NICU due to jaundice. She stayed there for 2 days in the sun.

My daughter was born at 38 weeks and was in NICU gestation doesnā€™t determine that the babyā€™s health does

Depends on the babe. Mine were born at 36, 35 and 37. None of them needed to spend any time in the NICU. And we spent no more than 2-3 days. I have a friend that was full term with all of her babes and all needed a NICU stay for underdeveloped lungs.

My daughter was born at 37 wks n was fine. :hugs::hugs:I was induced due to she wanted out n I lived 70 miles from the hospital

It all depends on the baby I had two of my babies born at 35 weeks one needed the NICU for a few hours.

Not usually. As long as they donā€™t have any pre-existing conditions they can go home. Term is considered 38-40 weeks.

My twins were born at 34 weeks, and neither went to nicu. They did give me 2 rounds of a steroid shot to help with their lung development in the weeks before they were born.

Both my sonā€™s were born at 38 weeks no ICU. my 1st born was 7lbs and 3 ounces and me second was the smallest because he was only 6lbs

I was induced with my daughter at 38 weeks she weighed 4lbs but was not in NICU sheā€™s 5 years old now and super healthy :slightly_smiling_face: oh and I had to take steroids every Friday for her to grow :face_with_head_bandage:

My daughters were born at 38 weeks and were both healthy little babes.

It will if there is any health issues, breathing problems, lung problems etcā€¦otherwise no.

Mine was 35 weeks and weighed 4lbs. Never went to NICU. Only needed the light 24hrs.

My friends daughter was born at 35 weeks and wasnā€™t in the NICU both stayed in the hospital I think 2 extra days and she was 4lbs

Not stupied it honstly depends on the baby my 4 year old was 35 weeks and had no iusses my 1 year old was 35 weeks and had to be in the nicu for 2 mouths

37 weeks is full term. Dependant also if the baby has lung issues, they develope the last.

Iā€™ve had 4 of my 6 kids at 34 weeks and they were perfect

I had mine at 38 weeks my second childā€¦ he was just fine

I had two baby both boys born at 37 one spent a week in the nicu and one spent 12 hours ask about the steroid shots to boost the lungs

I was 36 weeks she was 5 11oz no nicu but if ur babys suger levels are low they will put the baby there

I delivered at 37 weeks and brought my baby home
