How can my daughter enjoy vacation while on her period?

I would think tampons would be the best choice. I demonstrated
With my foot on the side of the tub…fully dressed of course…to help her understand how to angle it toward the small of her back. I remember the instructions confused me and my mom was old school.Let her practice as soon as she starts so she isn’t inserting them wrong. It’s painful if they’re not in right.

Girl give her a damn tampon before she bleeds in the pool and is embarrassed!

I was like you and was afraid of my daughter using tampons. But honestly i let her make her own decision because it is her body. Ask her what she wants. Trust and believe looking back at how i felt about it i laugh.

get organic non chlorinated tampons. fragrance free. make sure the ONLY ingredient is organic cotton.

Best advice I can give you is let her use tampon and just use pads when not in the water… like what’s the big problem with tampons…

Umm why can’t she try tampons??

I use a menstrual cup and it’s way more comfortable than a tampon. I wish I never started with tampons. You’re gonna wanna get her one now to get used to putting it in. Help. Her.

If she’s never used a tampon then a cup would be a HUGE jump for her. Let her try tampons-They make smaller ones for teenagers.

Have a look at Modibodi :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Have you tried period panties and swimwear?

with a menstrual cup you leave it in for 12 hours unless you find leakage. i started wearing one when i was 14. you only replace them when you start to see changes in the product thats not discoloration. takes a second to get used to but when used right you dont even feel it just like a tampon. a cup would be best in my opinion wake up 7am put it in and go about your day take it out at 7pm rinse it and reapply. have a bit of bleach and a sponge available for the sink. or have waterbottles in the bathroom so she can rinse it over the toilet

Why are embarrassing your daughter, if she finds out you posted this she’ll be so upset.
Did you ask her doctor or some of the other mom’s with daughters?
I wouldn’t do tampons because of her age and toxic shock. You plan activities near bathrooms.

What’s the difference between having a tampon in or shoving a diva cup up there? She’s still having to put it inside her. It’s what she is comfortable with.

If she hasn’t used a tampon before, trying to place a diva cup may be a bit of a learning curve. And you may not be able to guarantee a sanitary place for her to rinse it if need be. But a tampon should be a fairly easy adjustment. I recommend the ones with plastic applicators. U by Kotex seems to be the easiest. You may have to guide her through the first couple of tries though. And be mindful of the length of time she has it in- you may have to remind her to change it at first.

Check out the period swim suits. It’s made like the period panties but water proof

My niece is a swimmer & had to wear tampons at a young age. No other choice with swim competitions. :woman_shrugging:t3:

They have an all natural brand of tampons and pads now. You should just talk with your daughter and find out what she’s comfortable with

Yes it will ruin her vacation definitely let her have the choice if you are concern to you something for the water it happened to me and that is something I never forget and my mom did not budge on the tampons which I use now

I mean, it’s her body right? If she wants to wear tampons you should be supporting her and teaching her how to use one properly. That’s your job mama, to educate. Maybe try organic cotton tampons. She will feel a lot more secure and comfortable. But bottom line mama you need to teach her all of her options and how to use them all, no exceptions.

Give her ibuprofen. Gets rid of cramps and it usually completely stops my flow for 6-10 hours. I have very heavy periods(bleeding through super plus tampons every 45 minutes) and it stops my flow so I don’t have to worry about it at work. My obgyn recommended it after I told her how weird it was it stopped my flow but she said she usually recommends it for heavy flows!

She’s 13… let the girl wear a damn tampon and enjoy her vacation.

so let her wear a tampon!

I was on my period the whole week we went to disney. I use pads. Just take some with you make sure she packs extra. And I had my underwear and shorts on if I got wet I made sure I did all the water rides first then changed

Let her wear tampons? I’d like to know the reason why you’re so against it. It should be up to her what she wants to use so she can actually enjoy her vacation. If you teach her about them and let her know that she has to change them frequently I don’t see what the problem is…

Small tampons…she will be fine!

There’s not only cups, they make discs which are comfortable and good for 12 hrs at CVS

They have period swim wear and work great little expensive but does the job their from ruby love
Love their underwear to with reusable n washable pads for extra leaks

OB/gyn nurse practitioner here. I would let her use a tampon. She will be so much happier doing that. If you are afraid she will not be a virgin anymore that makes no sense. Only sex takes away virginity. There are very few true medical reasons not to use a tampon.

I’d say the tampons for your vacation, but menstrual cups are fantastic for future use! They do take a cycle or two to get the hang of tho.

They also have those period disc that are disposable at target, but I’d just use a tampon. They have all natural, cotton ones, just make sure she changes them out regularly and she should be good to go!

Let her use tampons…let her be comfortable and enjoy her vacation.

You aren’t comfortable with her wearing tampons?

Since when was her period about you? She should be given all the information on all options and try what she would like to and make her own informed decision. Imagine how her period makes her comfort levels feel. Lordy!!

Seems like you didn’t plan ahead very well if she’s using an app to track her periods, that’s the first damn thing i woulda thought of

Ask her what she wants to try. Its her body, her period, her vacation. Also cups are WONDERFUL, once you find the right one and figure it out. You usually only have to empty it twice a day, and it usually shortens your period.

I was using tampons by age 13

There are swimsuits designed for teenagers to wear on their period. That would work perfect for the time in the water.

menstrual cups can be very difficult to use for some people, i could never get the hang of them.
please don’t push her to use something that maybe difficult and unsuccessful at first, you will ruin her holiday and may scar her mentally. If she has a bad experience so soon into getting her monthly’s it could really effect her view of it.
Let her use tampons! they are easy and very comfortable to wear.

I’d reccomend tampons as well. My daughter is also 13, got her period the day of a dance competition. We honestly had zero choice of what to do bc of the costume. She was scared at first, but then fell in love with them bc they aren’t bulky and she felt like everyone didn’t “know” she had her period.

If she’s not comfortable wearing tampons that’s one thing but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be comfortable with her wearing them.

Let her wear the f-ing tampons. G*d dammit. :expressionless::person_facepalming::roll_eyes:

If you don’t make a big deal about this she won’t either

The flex cups have disposable options as well

They sell leak proof period bathing suits now

A Diva cup is far worse size wise than a tampon if that is your concern. A cup is more painful also as it is just funky shaped. But tampons come in so many sizes especially for a teen that age. They have sport ones also that are more comfortable for lots of movement and they even have a heavy flow absorbency.

You don’t feel comfortable with her wearing tampons…but maybe she is? It’s her body, not yours.

And menstrual cups are NOT disgusting, what are you? 10?

Is your daughter also uncomfortable trying tampons, or is the concern purely your own? I would find someone who is knowledgeable about a range of menstrual products, and learn alongside her. She will get a feel for what works for her, and she may want to try out a number of options. Knowledge is empowerment, and your daughter deserves to feel comfortable and in charge of her own body and the products she uses.

Either tampons or just reschedule your vacation. Have her decide.

Also maybe get her some, their called period panties.I don’t think you can wear them in the water, but they are good for sleeping when it’s time for bed.I have the diva cup and once you’ve learned how to handle it it’s pretty good. You need to be in a private 1 bathroom 1 sink bathroom though.Your not going to want to rinse it in a multiple stall restroom.

The mini tampons that fit in your pockets that you click into place are literally the same as normal tampons. Just different applicators. Same sizes though. Which also means they come in super. For the heavy flow

Otherwise try those period panties under her bathing suit perhaps? xx good luck

What about trying period underwear? If inserting isn’t an option

When I was a teenager (hated pads, used then for few years), I was advised by female pharmacist that small tampons are safe for girls(O.B. was my go to) and that was the best thing ever, I was comfortable with it in a water, no leaks,no mess, just make sure on the heavy days to change them out every couple hours.

They make tampons specifically for teenagers. I’d just let her wear tampons if you’re that concerned about her period “ruining” your vacation

I never used anything but tampons and my mom was never against it because I didn’t like the feeling of pads or looking at blood. My two daughters will be allowed to use whatever they choose. Im pretty sure tampons were created for swimming :joy:

Oh my gosh. Is this a woman writing this or a man? If it’s a dad, I can understand being overwhelmed. But you will likely be carrying a bag of water and snacks. Just put a few supplies for the girl. If this is a woman writing this… have you really never gone anywhere on those days? Have you never carried anything in your purse or backpack or pocket or even your bra… like really. I really hope this is a clueless dad and not a mother who should know better.

They have period panties for swimming. I’ve used the desposable cups a little less comfy than the ones you wash. My mom had me try tampons around that age for swimming but they don’t work for me. Somehow I bleed around them.

I seen a post the other day about period swimsuits. Maybe check them out.

What’s wrong with tampons? I mean that’s truly her only option that will work for a 12 year old that will have her feel comfortable going in water

It is your preference if u personally dont like Tampons, but to be honest, don’t stop ur daughter from using them if she wants to. Even just for the trip! My mom was against me using them, but the idea, to me, of sitting In a pad covered in my own fluids made my stomach curl. So I used to steal boxes of Tampons from the drug store as I needed them. Until my grama caught me & made me tell her why. She made my mom let me use them . Been using them since & I’m 41. Only ever used a pad after I gave birth & hated it both times!! They make smaller one definitally!!I only use light ones as their smaller & I feel very uncomfortable inside with even regular flow ones. If I’m having a heavier flow day, I just change them more often.

My 11 year old started her period two weeks after her birthday I have used pads with her for now but we are big river family, and she has asked about that and I told when we get to that point she is on hers and we want to go to the river I will show her how to use them properly, there’s not thing that as reasonable as that yes if she doesn’t like them yea I plan to invest in the period swim wear. She has period underwear show her let her see how she feels

You let that girl wear a damn tampon and go to the water park. Have her change it every 2 hours if you’re concerned about tss. The cup is not really for someone just starting out on this journey and GOING TO A WATER PARK. You’re making such a big deal outta something most of us women deal with monthly, I can only imagine how your daughter feels.

She could try the pocket tampons. They are great for someone who isn’t used to them or doesn’t like regular sized ones. I tried them for the first time a few months ago (only my second tampon attempt ever), and they are great.

I bought my daughter some period swim bottoms.

Where I live you can call you’re doctor and ask for a medication called Norethisterone which you take 3/4 days before you’re period is about to start and it delays it for about a week for so I do it if I’m due to come in whilst being in holiday then you just get a period 2 weeks later than originally planned x

My entire first year of starting my period I only wore pads so I understand where your coming from. But If she is comfortable with tampons let her use them only for swimming purposes and when she’s not in the water only wear pads.

Talk to her GYN about the heavy flow. That’s miserable, vacation or not.

A mom that would go through all of this in order for her daughter to enjoy her vacation, realizes it’s her body, her choice. I think mom is asking for suggestions to help her teen, since she’s a newbie at this. It can be overwhelming. I bet she’ll be grateful, for your help.

To the mom and daughter, I hope you find something that works. You guys have a great vacation! :desert_island:

If you can let her use a menstrual cup you can let her use a tampon. Just explain her options to her and let her pick what she wants. Its her body. Don’t keep her options from her when she could prefer something that may work better for her. And then she’ll be happy and have fun.

Let the girl use tampons if she want to use tampons it’s her body it should be her choice on what she wants to use.

This may be wrong but I know when I was younger I got tables off the doctor to stop mine. And then when I came home I stopped  was the best thing…

Why not tampons? What does your daughter prefer? Its her body. She should be able to use what she wants.

I would talk to her about tampons honestly. This isnt something to be rude. Im saying it because my mom was the same way. I wore pads until i was about 14 or 15 then i started using tampons. They are uncomfortable at first but if you use them right and change them everytime you go to the bathroom or are done with being in the water or every two to three hour they are safe. I only say it because i wish i would have had someone there to help me look at all the options and figure things out. Shes a young adult and has a long road ahead of her. This might be small but being open and talking with her about things might leave more room for a better relationship for you two. So if you do talk to her and she says she wants to try tampons then support her even of it makes you feel uncomfortable. When my daughter is that age i rather her have my support and know she is doing things safety than her even up with a uti bladder infection or worse toxic shock just because i didnt want her to do something. Its just my view of things and i dont mean anything nasty by any or this. Its 1000% heart felt coming from someone that had to do things alone and was lost alot because my mom didnt talk about things or just said no but in the end its your child and youll do what you think is best for her. Because of luck i hope you find way that makes you both happy.

Okay but hear me out, it isn’t your body… it is not about what you are comfortable with. If she is cool with tampons then that’s cool.
I only ever used tampons, I think pads are gross. My sister uses a diva cup and loves it, just takes it out in the shower at night and in the morning, they last a lot longer than pads and tampons too. Also you could let her know about the period swimwear, they’re good.
Let your daughter make decisions and form her own opinion about her body and what she would like to do with it.

If she’s comfortable with using tampons, then I don’t see the problem with just letting her use those.

All the comments why not tampons??!!!
Well for one she is a child ( are ppl aware of the risk with tampons)
And this is her mother when she is completely comfortable that her daughter can use tampons safely I’m sure the 13 yr old will know about her options
My daughter will not be given the option of tampons until I know she can use the safely

I do like the cups. I have a little kit that I use in public bathrooms that has some flushable wipes in it to wipe the cup out after emptying it. It works pretty well.

Help a mama out and respond anonymously on our forum. How can my daughter enjoy vacation while on her period?

I started my period at the beach when I was 12. I was embarrassed, cramping, and even though I knew what was happening, I was still freaked out. Locked myself in my bathroom and my mom and grandmother went out, got tampons and pads for whichever I wanted to use. Being mortified and not in a headspace to learn anything new, I stuck to pads and didn’t swim. It was miserable and made others miserable. I learned the next week when I was home and now switch between pads, tampons, and the cup depending on the needs of that day. I’m saying all this because it would be much easier for her to learn about these products now instead of during. Let her practice a few times and then let her choose.
