My baby struggles to poop but the doctor doesn't listen: Advice?

Sounds like colic. But I could be wrong I know it can be very uncomfortable.

They also have baby probiotics that might help with gut issues.
Make sure it for her age.
After while it might help make her have regular bowel movements, and help with the discomfort she having

There also gripe water for immediate relief

It doesnt sound like she is actually constipated the way you describe her bowel movements. Sounds more like a stomach issue, maybe the milk type, an allergy, gas trapped. I’d try gas drops and see if any relief from that, then move on from there
Not sure how old baby is but some newborns have to build muscles to get it out also, or so I’ve heard?? My son had constipation and I added kyro syrup to each bottle and it helped tremendously to soften and help him go…

Give her water. My pediatrician told me not yo give my baby water but if course old school grandmother (from another country) told me to give my baby water. After, i did that and massaged her lower back down she was going.

My son was having this same problem. WIC actually listened to me and changed his Milk. His Dr finally came out and told me to stop breastfeeding because he was lactose. Fast forward to now 8 yrs old and he’s in pull ups still because I didn’t get a second opinion in time. Now he sees a GI specialist. Heart breaking for me, but he’s getting better. One day at a time.

In then end trust your gut. My son would hold his poop because it hurt so bad which of course made it worse. We ended up just changing his diet which worked. You definitely need a new doctor they don’t know your child the way you do a good doctor would not dismiss your concerns so easily.

Your doctor is right. She’s not trying to poop more than likely. The digestive system is still not fully developed as newborns so they have a lot of gas and it’s painful. I’m currently on my fourth newborn and nursing him through a bout of gas as I type this. Mylicon drops, warm baths, tummy time, and comfort nursing all help. Also, breastfed babies can actually go up to two weeks without a bowel movement because breast milk is so efficiently used by the body.

If you breast feed you may need to think about what you are eating. It might be upsetting her tummy. Also, my cousin said her son didn’t poop well as a baby. They had to get help. Maybe like the other ladies said find a new doc. Something I read “doctors can only diagnose what they’ve come across or know.” It’s okay to seek second opinions.

My son did that. I thought he was constipated. It’s actually a lot of work for babies to coordinate their muscles.
It causes them to strain, grunt,
whine etc I
used the windi to help things a long when I could tell he was very uncomfortable. It works like a charm- just don’t over do it as they can get used to it and need to
develop those muscles themselves

My daughter used to have the same issues. She would go days and hold it because she was afraid it was gonna hurt. I started giving her a little dose of miralax every day and it eventually worked itself out,

My newborn has the same issue and I am just breastfeeding. We were told that breastfed babies don’t actually get constipated they just have a difficult time coordinating muscles, figuring out how to get the poop out. When she struggles we give her some gas drops and that helps to move things along like assisting her with the bowel movement and we also gently rub her belly too. If you are formula feeding maybe it’s a stomach issue and try a new formula.

Consider a lactose allergy. We had this issue with my son. His pediatrician told us it was probably a milk allergy and put him on soy formula. It worked but then made it worse. We soon realized soy still had lactose and had to switch him to lactose free and now he has no issues at all.

One, get a new doctor. Two, I’m not a doctor and this is very old school, but a dallop of Karo syrup in the bottle. My oldest was the same. They suspected a kink in her colon. Since surgery wasn’t something we wanted to do, we went old school and it worked. As she grew older and could eat more fruits and veggies and drink lots a water, this issue fixed itself. She can still struggle to go now at 9 but she also knows she needs to go every day so it doesn’t become a problem.

It depends on how old she is. If she is a newbord you want to avoid prune juice. It could be severe gas too… my son had it and mylocon was my best friend. Try rubbing her tummy. But definitely get a new doctor. You do not need a doctor that will not listen to you.

My son did the same thing!!! My doctor told me fruits and vegtables would help, and we tried so many natural helpers. We switched to regulate by enfamil and we have not had a problem since. I would suggest trying it. It killed me to watch my son straining to poop screaming and crying, I hope things get better for you soon.

This happened with my daughter I finally took her to wolfsons and they did a ultrasound and a contrast mri and found out her muscles don’t work correctly so she can’t digest food correctly which is why she was always backed up and in pain they put her on meds to help her go and did therepy to make her muscles get stronger and shes not in alot of pain like before! Good luck on finding out whats wrong with your little one I know it can be stressful!

I left my first pediatrician because of this same issue. Went to a new one who immediately knew I was worried. We were sent to GI to confirm and she had a milk protein allergy. Not just like lactose intolerance where soy would work. We were given sample cans of similac alimentum and within 24hrs I had a whole new baby. The sensitive and soy formula did not do anything because it still had the milk protein that she couldn’t break down. She would scream and cry in pain for days at a time. Maybe give that a shot and find another dr.

My doctor always told me that this was normal as they have to actually learn how to poop and learn how to use the muscles to do so & will be something that will stop eventually. It could also be that there is an allergy to whatever you’re feeding and it’s just causing stomach pain. My son did this for awhile after we brought him home and eventually we had to switch him to a sensitive formula and as he got older the grunting and belly flexing and all that stopped.

I too had this problem
With my daughter I tried every formula out there
I tried giving her extra water nothing worked
Doctors finally gave her reglian for her acid reflux it helped a little with her stomach issues
I switched her formula to gentle ease and she did so much better good luck

I did an ounce of water and my hospital showed me how to use a qtip to help dig it out honestly gross but when they start pushing put their knees to their stomach and help.

Ya id be getting another pediatrician…most important thing is they listen to you and help you look into or resolve your concerns…and also no its not normal for your baby to struggle to poop, constipation isn’t normal, and being up all night because of it after trying all you said isn’t normal either. Id want to look further into it with a scan/xray to make sure there’s nothing partially blocking or holding things up etc. It definitely needs attention and you most definitely shouod follow your gut and push the issue. Any good Dr. Worth their salt will say a parent knows their child best and will listen and work to resolve your concerns. If thats not happening time for a new DR.

Get a new Dr if yours won’t listen to you. You are the mama and you have a gut instinct that something is not right. I’m not sure how old your babe is but mine also was always constipated and once I started giving her water at 6 months it went away

Get a new doctor hun!!! This is the hardest thing to watch your daughter cry and strain just to be able to poop. Our doctor prescribed our daughter with Lactulose that we have to take daily because nothing else worked. We took the poop in to show her the rocks and she saw that she even tore at 12&6 because of force.I even have to help her sometimes by pressing above her anus to get the rocks out.

It sounds like there’s a “kink” in her colon. My son had a similar issue. However, no surgical way to fix it. It does resolve on its own as they grow.

Time for another opinion! Babies can go 5 days not pooping? I totally don’t think that’s true! Trust your instincts!
Another thing: could she just be colicky? Symptoms sound similar.

Press her knees to belly and do some pushes … it always helped my kids …

I don’t have any little ones now, but I would find a new doctor that will listen to your concerns…

Yikes. I’d get an opinion from another pediatrician. All 3 of my kids needed prune juice added ro their formula. I had a varitey of feeding- breast, bottle, both, etc. Once we were using mostly formula, our pediatrician had us put 1/2oz to 1 oz of prune juice in 2 bottles a day. I don’t remember how old they were when we first started though. We always joked that people thought we were giving our babies chocolate milk bc of the color. Once rhey were older we had them drink watered down pear juice and ate peach amd pear baby food. Apples are constipating but the p-fruits…prunes, peaches, and pears will help with constipation.

Formula? If so what kind. My daughter was on Similac Advance when she came home and after 3 weeks she was horrible. I switched her to Similac sensitive and within 24 hours she was a different baby

Miralax. I was told by our pediatrician that sometimes our intestines don’t have enough moisture. My son was on miralax from 3weeks old until about 3 yrs old. It was amazing!! He had the same symptoms you explained.

Miralax is what my kids pediatrician prescribed with no problem when they had the same issues.

Gripe water, easy thing to try :grinning:… Remember you know best and if it continue s keep calling the doctor x

My son had issues and they made me feel mad… Turns out he had a milk allergy.

When my kids were babies I would give them a WEAK chamomile tea warm. They loved it and it helped with tummy cramps and gas. It’s also caffeine free and helped them sleep. It’s an old time remedy. It’s also good for you.

My son’s pediatrician told us to put a tsp of karo syrup in every other bottle we fed him and it worked. He was a newborn at the time too.

Depends on babies age. I am a gma now, raised 4 children myself. I recommend kayro syrup in the milk bottle or apple juice, water down on age of child. Try a little then see what works best.

Change drs. Applesauce. Breast fed babies tiny amount prune juice diluted is sterile water. Formula babies a tsp corn syrup in the bottle.

I had to rub my son stomach in a clockwise way after feeding it helped with digestion and maybe try the chiropractor I know it sounds weird but it really help with my son tummy issues

A little massage from HER right hip to her ribcage along her ribcage and down to her left hip might help get things going. First make an “i” from right hip to rib cage, then an “L” from right hip to rib cage and along it to the left, then a full “U” from right hip to ribcage Down other side to left hip.

I learned this from a massage therapist.

Do you have a Childrens hospital near you? We had to see a pediatric gastroenterologist to get my son’s issues worked out. Tell your pediatrician you want a second opinion and ask for a referral. It took awhile for the appointment but was worth the wait!

When my children were babies I would “exercise” their legs a bit - and gentle move their feet to their chest back and forth - babies can’t move and so this seemed to help … and I agree if it is medical - second opinion … you have to advocate for your children’s health

Hade the same problem with my son. He was lactose intolerant. With the right milk it went away by itself in a year. If you are breastfeeding stop to eat dairy products for a while. Is shes fed by bottle change to a milk without dairy.

My daughter had the same issue and her pediatrician told me to give her a tablespoon of mineral oil and keep increasing until she started to go. Totally worked.

Maybe she is sucking too much air in . I would rock my kids lightly up n down n it always worked . Kind of like when u bounce them in ur knee. I had to hold my daughter on my chest rkr a good 35 min when she was s younger because gas . Did u try different bottle or slower flow nipple

My newborn was having the same issue. Her doctor suggested giving her half an ounce of warm prune juice during one feeding each day. It’s worked so far. We now give it to her once every other day. We do tummy time and push her knees up to assist. She enjoys a good belly rub. She poops once or twice a day . Everything is going to be just fine. Keep going, you got this.

First, I would find a new dr.

Second, are you giving her gas drops? Those will constipate her (it was horrible for my boys). Gripe water works well for gas and doesn’t cause constipation.

Third, is she BF or formula? And how old is she?

Definitely sounds like an allergy to the formula. Try switching to alimentum or nutramigen. Both my kids were on that because they both had an issue with the milk based formulas. They are both on the more expensive side but so worth it. The pediatrician recommended it and it definitely worked. Give it shot. Good luck!!!

When my son was a newborn I was told some times they just can’t figure out how to poop, they’re body is still learning those muscles and it takes some babies a longer time.
That being said TRUST YOUR GUT. Go see another doctor if you’re sure something isn’t right

When my daughter was a baby we’d take a small sliver of Ivory bar soap and inserted it and it worked. But I’ve also heard the GRIPE water is good.:poop:

My niece had issues pooping when she was a baby. We found out that her but whole was too small and her muscles and nerves were too high up. She had 3 or 4 different surgeries to fix it.

Get a new dr. We went through 5 before we found one we liked. She listens to us and talks to us as a mother not just a dr. It helps that her kids are about the same age as mine

My son had exactly the same symptoms…turned out he was lactose and gluten intolerant :pensive:
It’s a process of elimination when it comes to food…
Good luck :crossed_fingers::sparkling_heart: xox

My son had this issue… he ended up having reflux. He was placed in a special formula and given acid reflux meds. When he got older we would mix prune juice with milk everyday which helped.

Ok so here’s my take on it… my daughter, who is now 18 had similar problems as an infant… one time a nurse gave me a tip and it worked very well… she said that babies have underdeveloped muscles in that area… she suggested i put a couple of table spoons of baking soda in a warm bath and sit her in it, the baking soda actually relaxes the rectal muscles so the baby can poop… it worked very well… but also… please keep looking into it… there maybe be another condition underneath this symptom… unfortunately for my daughter she has Crohn’s Disease which is an inflammatory Bowel Disease

Always gave my son Kayroe (not sure on spelling) in his formula. My grandma told me to do it and I asked the pediatrician and she said go for it. Worked like a charm.

Tell that doctor to go days without pooping & see how they like it! But since she doesn’t want to help you or your baby prune juice!

Yeah I wud get a second opinion and keep pushing until someone listens to you im actually really frustrated at the lack of care from doctors these days they are so mechanical no compassion anymore :sleepy:

Prunes always did the job when my babies had trouble going potty . But it could also be something more serious and you wouldn’t know change doctors immediately and get advice from someone else. My daughter had Tracheomalacia and it took months of her suffering before we found out because her Dr didn’t listen to us we took her to the e.r at children’s hospital and she was diagnosed there we switched our health care plan and drs and she has been in good hands since sometimes you have to go with your gut.

My older child went three years constipated until we found a new doctor that referred us to a children’s hospital and they fixed the problem… it was a ton of laxatives and Powerade and misery! Don’t wait any longer some require surgery to fix!

Our oldest had this issue starting at about a week old. Her pediatrician had use mix 1 oz water with 1 oz apple juice and give that to her every few hours. Seemed to help her.

For us it turned out she v was lactose intolerant and baby’s bowels are a bit perforated at this stage so it was important to not add more problems. I had to go on a diet myself and add lactase enzyme drops with every feeding. Worked well, she outgrew the issue when she was 4 months  good luck

Do you think maybe your child may have a little bit of colic? My daughter couldn’t pass wind and or burp and behaved like yours. Up all night. Looked uncomfortable and cried a lot then settled when she passed the wind… Try gripe water if they still sell it. Mix it with water. It helps… otherwise, lay your child on their stomach often and that helps as well. Good luck hun. It doesn’t stay this way forever. It lasted 18 months for my daughter, then she was fine. Burps and farts like a trooper now lol.

My granddon was the same way for 6 months my daughter took him to another doctor he changed the formula and said it was colic. My grsndson is 100 percent better bowels are better

Depends how old your baby is my first thought would be find another pediatrician one that listens and can give you an answer you can give prune juice with sterilized water but keep in mind prune juice does cause gas so that is why I am encouraging you to go to another Dr let us know how it works out❤️

My daughter had this problem. When she is struggling take a cotton swab and put in bottom. The “o” ring is not opening for her! Same thing happened to my girl!! Hope it helps!!

Corn syrup in warm water helps too. Thats an old school trick…

I gave mine diluted apple or prune juice apple first always, prune is very rough on their guts. Probiotics for infants work well but not the first day. Formula change the formula she’s drinking may not work for her and she may need the one with probiotic already in it.

My daughter had this problem too. My doctor gave her meds for acid reflux. But before I did that I use to take a q-tip and put vasoline on it and put it in her butt a little wait a couple mins and out came all the poop. My mom taught me that trick.

Miralax, prune juice, apple juice, gripe water, gas drops, work but if she’s gassy it might be colic and you can try giving her some camomile tea and see if that helps

This was my son 100 percent. I used colic calm how old is your newborn? While everything the doctor said is true it’s hard to watch them. Pooping is very new and does take time to get used to. I would also make sure you are getting all your nutrients and not eating gassy greens look up brassica plant family.

We use to mix prune juice in the formula bottles. Our daughter had poop and constipation issues until she 4? She used to hold it because it would hurt so much. She had poop issues as a baby a then about 15 months old she started holding it. She was the only 2 yo I know that could say and know what suppository.

New doctor for sure, if he’s already not listening and your baby is still a newborn, he’s never going to make you feel secure.
I had a similar thing with one of my babies, and his awesome pediatrician recommended glycerin suppositories. Within ten minutes, pain free poop and the glycerin is a natural lubricant so minimal discomfort. Good luck hun!

Try warm wash cloths on her stomach and if that doesn’t help i would start looking for a new pediatrician bc you know your baby best and if he/she is not listening or taking you seriously time to find someone who will also try gentle ease formula its easier for babies to digest had this same issue with my son as a baby and a formula change helped so much. Hope this helps

See a new doctor. My son had popping problems since birth. He has a sensory disorder so to him the sensation of pooping “hurt”. He would scream bloody murder every time he had to go. His ped told me prune juice, apple juice ext. Thre years of struggling and a doctor switch, new doc gave him and adult laxative and a stool softener to take DAILY

Talk to another provider in office, or find another physician. You know something isn’t right, or you would not be writing this. Get someone who will listen to you.

My nephew suffered terrible trying to pass stool. Thankfully he did out grow it within a month. This is what the dr said it was…Because of immaturity, the anal sphincters will not relax at the same time that contractions of the colon muscles are trying to push its contents forward. Typically, the infant grunts and strains, turns red, and seems in pain. Eventually, a soft stool or gas is passed, and the discomfort resolves…

All 3 of my children had this problem and my dr didn’t really have any suggestions. I changed them to Enfamil Neutramigen (not sure on that spelling) and worked amazingly for them.

When my daughter has trouble i rub her belly and kinda squeeze lightly on her belly to help break up the poop. Her dr said she cant have juice or anything cuz shes too little and thats too much sugar but what i said has been helping me.

I struggle with it and guess what so does my daughter! I also was not heard by the doctor and brushed it off like it was nothing! But I know from experience it is something! I have to take laxatives a couple times a week so naturally she may need to as well! I bought the cereal with probiotics in it which helped ALOT! Also have tried the liquid probiotics which helped but it’s wayyyyy more expensive but works wonders!

I really hope you get the answers you need. My thoughts will be with you and your little one.

My son is 5 years old and still fights pooping. He still poops his pants. It’s extremely painful for him and the doctors think it’s all in my head. He will go 8+ days without pooping and will only smear when he does finally go. He has had these troubles since he was born.I’ve done suppositories enemas, laxatives MiraLAX, pear juice, prune juice, karo syrup, chiropractor, change of diet nothing works. The doctors keep telling me he will grow out of it.

My grandson had the same issue. Sometimes he’d go 4 days…it hurt so bad he was afraid to go. The pediatrician said to give him a fourth cap is Miramar everyday till he got more comfortable with going. It took him a while to get over the fear of the pain but is doing so much better now.

I used about a teaspoon of Caro syrup, mixed with about 2 oz of water, when one of my boys had that problem. It was suggested by my grandmother. It helped and then I found out he had an issue digesting the milk. We switched him to soy and didn’t have any more issues.

I had the same problem with my baby up all night etc and wouldn’t poo for days after 3 weeks someone told me go to a cranial osteopath and I did wel I never looked back, he found my babies liver and bowl were shifted and babies stomach was full of all gas and also his neck and spine were out of one from delivery he had 5 sessions from him and he now takes his last feed at 12.30am and sleeps right through 8-9 hrs best decision I ever made

When my daughter had this problem our doctor told us to get walmart fiber mix it in whatever she drank and the next day she didn’t have any issues kept it up for about 6 months and she has been fine we started it at 14 mo shes now 6

Possibly colic. If you’re bottle feeding try some formulas that help with colic. If breastfeeding try adding grapes prunes and other natural food that could help with it. But most importantly find another pediatrician that can better assist you.

Definitely get a second opinion some doctors just stay stuck on what they told you first… which may not even be right. They are not with your daughter and know your doctor the way you do.

My son did the same thing when he was born for the first three months, the doctors wouldn’t listen to me either, so I put him on low iron formula and within a week he was not struggling to poop. I also gave him, its like an enema but you hold it in their but hole and the poop will come out real quick, they are white and cone shape. I can’t remember the name of them, i did it every other day. You have to hang onto it then once the poop starts to come out you pull it out

So far everyone is saying the same thing change your doctor as she shouldn’t ignore what your worrying at all …then if you bottle feeding her maybe you need to change her formula…or put more water in than powder see if that helps . Go by your instincts …give her water before you give formula course it has to be cooled boiled water…

My baby had this issue when I was giving him organic formula. I just couldn’t take the struggle he was having with not being able to poop so I switched to regular and he seems perfectly fine. I’ve been giving him gripe water and probiotics and it works as well.

My son has a lactose allergy. He did the same thing as an infant. Everytime I ate ice cream then nursed him, he would be up screaming all night. When he was old enough to switch to milk it got worse. The minute I switched him to lactose free he was better.
I would definitely try changing the diet/formula before sticking things in places meant for exit only, at least until a dr recommends it. Also, find a new dr if you are getting the care you need. Theres nothing wrong with a second opinion.

You need a new pediatrician…fast. Nearly 45 years ago that happened to my child. After getting no help qt all. I switched doctors and my baby had an intestinal blockage, she could have died!!!

RN here. Get a new pediatrician! Our pediatrician gives out a little booklet at the first check up with all kinds of tips and tricks from constipation to getting gum out of their hair. My kids are 8 and 9 now so I know my books are long gone but, per the book and our pediatrician, my son got milk of magnesia in 1 bottle per day. I think it was a half of a teaspoon but definitely verify that with a doctor.

Sounds like a tummy ache… I would try gas drops and a little prune juice and depending on what is being fed maybe look Into trying a soy based formula - poor baby! Being a mom is hard, there isn’t a handbook! Remember, you’re doing great

See about a G.I. doctor. There could be an underlying issue, that you may not know about. My daughter has issues with that as well.
Good luck :blush::pray:

My daughter was only a couple weeks old and had the same problem. She was miserable. Pediatrician said to give her an ounce of prune juice a day either straight or mixed in with formula, after a week or 2 drop her to half an ounce a day to keep her regular. I did this back and forth for about 2 months and now she has no issues at all. Hopefully you figure something out that will work for your little, I totally feel your pain.

I agree with Gene. Go see another pediatrician FIRST… You shouldn’t be pushed aside. Also, give her some water to drink. If she’s old enough to eat baby food, give her puréed fruit. If not, give prune juice.

Is she formula fed? Change formula. I went through the same thing with my daughter. Her Pediatrician didn’t listen either, so I found a new one. She explained to me that some formulas have bigger proteins than others, which can be harder for your baby to breakdown. The protein in Good Start Formula are very small and a lot easier to digest. We switched and within 24 hours, she was a whole new kid!!

My daughter had such a hard time pooping. Come to find out she has a milk allergy. After forever, I figured it out and put her on Alimentum but she would only drink the liquid. It was expensive but she was no longer screaming in pain and her little booty bleeding. Hope this helps.
